Self-assessment

5 part story consistent tense 3rd person describe character describe setting fronted adverbial phrases dialogue

Read the short story below:

The Canal.

“Now, I do not want you two playing down by the old canal. You know it’s dangerous,” said Mrs Mac, digging her hands deep into the washing up bowl. Tom and Tiree nodded as if they understood.

Ten minutes later, they reached the old canal. Cautiously, they peered in. The water was still, black and deep. Although it looked dangerous, Tom grinned at his brother. He took the rope swing that dangled from an overhanging branch and leaped out over the canal. He swung backwards and forwards whooping like a siren. Although Tiree was laughing, inside his heart was thudding. He knew that he would have to swing over the canal next.

“Are you scared, Tiree?” asked Tom, staring at him. Tiree did not want his friend to think that he was a coward so he ran back, leapt out and sailed across the canal, skimming the water with his heels. But half way over, the rope snapped. Tiree crashed down into the water. Tom gasped because he knew that Tiree could not swim!

Desperately, Tom leapt in. At first, he could see nothing – just darkness and weed tangling his feet. Then he saw red! It was Tiree’s hoodie. Frantically, Tom grabbed it and tugged Tiree to the side. Tiree lay on the bank gasping and wheezing like an old man.

Twenty minutes later, they were standing in Mrs Mac’s kitchen. They had to explain what had happened and Mrs Mac grounded them for a week! After all, she had warned them often enough. The canal was dangerous. They had been lucky.

2. Plan your short story using the planning grid below:

Planning ideas Beginning 2 characters decide to play a game…

Who are your characters? What are they playing? Have they been given a warning about the place they want to go to?

Resolution One character helps their friend. How does the character help his/her friend? What does he do?

Ending The characters return home relived that they are safe. What happened to them when they returned home? What did their parents say?

“Now please listen to me, I do not want you two playing down by that desolate woodland area. You know that it could be very dangerous,” said Mrs Johns cautiously as she paused from her book. Thomas and George nodded in agreement but there was a twinkle in their eyes as they knew they wanted to explore.

Twenty minutes later, they had reached the forbidden woodland. They peered through the towering trees towards a clearing in the distance…

You and your partner (an adult at home) should stand far apart from each other. Use your normal speaking voice to try to talk to each other. Make sure that you can't hear each other! Why can’t you hear each other?

The vibrations from the sound of your voice cannot continue moving as far as your partner's ear. The vibrations get smaller and stop before they reach your partner.

Your task is to make a string telephone to explore how sounds travel over a distance. You will need: two paper cups, a compass or a sewing needle to make holes in the cups and approximately 20m length of string.

What to do:

Ask an adult to help you to use the compass or sewing needle to carefully poke a hole in the bottom of each cup.

Thread the string through the holes and tie a knot at each end to stop it pulling through the cups.

You and your partner should each hold a cup and move apart so that the string is tight. Take turns talking into your cup while your partner listens in their cup.
