Year 3 Curriculum Overview

Literacy.

TERM 1

Non-fiction Pre-Unit 1: Reports This unit is specifically designed for the start of Y3 and stimulates all chn to start writing reports & thinking about the features of this type of factual text. Chn create fact files about themselves & produce a basic report, preparing them for Unit 1. Non-fiction Unit 1B: Reports Children learn about these Big Cats using both written non-fiction texts and through watching video footage. Narrative Unit 1: Stories in familiar settings Children read I’ll Take You to Mrs Cole & explore its imaginative setting. They extend this work by looking at Harry Potter & Toy Story & comparing film & written texts. Narrative Unit 5A: Dialogues and This 3 wk unit uses The Twits by Roald Dahl to examine dialogue in stories, before using a playscript of The Twits to learn about the layout, preparation and performance of plays. Non-fiction Unit 2A: Instructions Use recipes in Beware of Boys to identify differences between fiction & non-fiction text & to stimulate recipe writing. Poetry Unit 2: Shape poetry and calligrams Stimulated by a great website children write calligrams using font size, colour & style to express the word’s meaning.

TERM 3

Narrative Unit 3: Adventure/ Mystery stories We use Gorilla , The Tunnel and The Wrong Trousers to identify the structure of adventure stories. Using drama and imaginative writing we look at characters and their dilemmas/actions.

Narrative Unit 4: Authors and Letters Children look at the author Quentin Blake. They find out about the author, read his books, study his drawing and create their own stories, drawings and letters.

Narrative Unit 5B: Dialogues and Plays Explore and write puppet shows and playscripts. Find out about Punch & Judy, traditional & alternative and invent new characters.

Poetry Unit 1B: Performance and favourite poets Children read, listen to, write, learn and perform simple ‘conversation’ poems. They study and discuss a wide range of poems and write a review. Recommended reading. These books are not compulsory but will support your child’s learning.

TERM 2 Narrative Unit 2A: Myths and Legends Children listen to, read & form opinions of a variety of the best Greek myths. They invent a mythical creature, make posters, write an ID profile, assume the role of a Greek hero and finally write their own amazing Greek quest! Poetry Unit 1A: Poems to perform The focus is on RHYTHM & RHYME in Performance Poetry. Includes poetry such as Gran Can You Rap? and Double, Double, Toil & Trouble (Macbeth). Narrative Unit 2B: Myths and Legends Using drama, reading & writing, this unit explores settings & themes in traditional folk tales such as Baba Yaga. Non-fiction Unit 2B: Instructions . The children write instructions to go with the ingredients from George’s Marvellous Medicine before writing an atmospheric instruction poem to round off the unit. Poetry Unit 3B: Language Play A unit which starts off teasing children’s brains with the riddle game from the Hobbit. Then children move on to learning favourite poems by heart, writing own riddles and creating wordplay jokes.

Maths Aims. The children’s work is based on the Abacus Evolve scheme. This course provides complete coverage of the National curriculum. The school aims for every student to make progress in the understanding and application of mathematical concepts and therefore improve their confidence in this subject. One should also refer to the separate document, How Maths is taught in our school from Nursery to Year 6. You can request a copy of this from the school´s reception.

TERM 1

Block A1 • Count on and back in 1s or 10s up to at least 1000 • Read and write numbers up to 1000 in figures and words • Partition digit numbers 3- into H, T and U • Say the number that is 1, 10 or 100 more or less than a given number

Block B1 • Know by heart addition and subtraction facts for pairs of numbers that total up to

20 • Rehearse pairs of multiples of 10 that total 100 • Classify and describe 2D shapes, including quadrilaterals • Identify and sketch lines of symmetry in simple shapes

Block C1 • Know the relationship between kilometres and metres, metres and centimetres • Solve a given problem by organising and interpreting numerical data in simple lists,

Creative Curriculum. Term 1 – First half - Mighty Mountains A truly amazing topic planned and partly written by a teacher who lived & taught in the Himalayas and an experienced mountain climber. The children will learn about mountains and mountaineering as well as cultures who live in the mountains. Through this topic they will develop their knowledge of different subjects through 4 different themes: Theme 1 : Mountain Ranges (focus on Geography and Science) Geography:

• Mountain ranges and volcanoes around the world • Geology origins and plate tectonics • Mountain climates around the world

Science: • Solutions – soluble and insoluble solids • Separating solutions by evaporation

Art / DT: • Japanese woodblock paintings • Hokusai Japanese paintings • Papier-mache models of mountain ranges

Theme 2 : Mountain Adventures (focus on ICT and Geography) Geography:

• Learn about mountaineering – dangers, equipment etc. • Investigate famous expeditions – successful and failed attempts

Science: • Weather and Meteorology • Properties of materials / good insulators

Art /DT: • Design effective sleeping bag

Theme 3 : Himalayan Study (focus on Geography, At and RE) Geography:

• Locate Himalyas and investigate climate • Indian cities and Kumaon – comparison. • Kumaon – a day in the life of a child there. • Rivers and water • Compass directions

Theme 4 : Mountain Protection (focus on Geography and Science) Geography:

Second half – The Incredible Egyptians. Through this exciting topic, the children will construct a timeline covering 3000BCE to present day, from pharos and pyramids, Egyptian gods and their temples, the burial of mummies (!) and the daily life for Ancient Egyptians. Term 2 First half – Modern Britain Celebrate the diversity of people who live in Britain & the foods they have introduced. Explore the country & investigate the Commonwealth. Study changes in books, TV characters, cinema & everyday technology before looking at dress & dance since WW2. Through this topic they will develop their knowledge of different subjects through 4 different themes: Multicultural Me (focus on Geography, History and Art) Geography:

• Maps of Britain • Communities and places in Britain • Commonwealth • Multicultural foods

Art: • Design logos and batons • Britain holiday posters

History:

• Changing foods in Britain • Commonwealth and Olympic Games

Play and Pastimes (focus on History, Art and Science) History:

Second Half – The Tudors In this history based topic, the children will discover the ´Golden Age´where children live like Tudors and try not to lose their heads as they discover Royalty and Religion. Crime and punishment are the order of the day in the theme goodies and baddies, before they get their act together for Shakespeare! We can not undertake a study of the Tudors without learning about the most famous Tudor of all, Henry V111. The children will learn about the life, times and family of Henry V111 and look at the legacy he has left behind in modern day Britain.

Term 3 - Minibeasts and More! A terrific topic for children (& adults) who enjoy Creepy Crawlies and Slimy & Squirmy creatures! Join us on an exciting safari studying bees & bats, slugs & snails, frogs & hedgehogs & lots more! Through this topic they will develop their knowledge of different subjects through 4 different themes: Theme 1 : Creepy Crawlies (focus on Science, Art, ICT and Music) Science:

• Exploring different habitats • Plan a fair test • Invertebrates and anatomy • Metamorphosis

Art and Music: • Web art • Music inspired by bugs!

Geography: • Mapping locations

Theme 2 : Pond life (focus on Science, DT and Art) Science:

• Investigating ponds and pond life • Classification – vertebrates / invertebrates • Life cycles • Food chains

Art and DT: • Drawing and sketching • Making junk creatures • Producing plan for real pond

Theme 3 : Mini Mammals (focus on Science and Art) Science:

Theme 4 : Slimy and Squirmy (focus on Science and ICT)
