Geography
This term while learning about the ‘wild things’
on their island, we will be learning about a
contrasting island location outside of Europe. We
will be identifying human and physical features
and use geographical language to describe these.
History Using artefacts, paintings and photographs we will
learn about the seaside long ago. We will ask
questions about what the seaside was like long
ago and consider why and how it has changed
compare to what we see at the seaside today.
YEAR 2
Terms 5 and 6
Where the Wild Things Are
ASPIRING – What jobs are linked
to inventing and geography?
What can we learn to help make the
world a better place?
QUESTIONING- How can we ask
and answer questions that deepen
our thinking?
English
Using a range of exciting and quality texts
as a starting point, Year Two children are
continuing to develop important writing
skills. This term we are trying to
independently include the four different
sentence types (commands, statements,
exclamations and questions) in our work
and use the full range of punctuation
correctly including apostrophes. We will
be writing stories, instructions,
explanations and reports and developing
these writing styles in our topic work this
term.
The children are aware that they need to
say each sentence before writing and check
that it makes full sense. Please encourage
your child to speak in complete
sentences. They know that they need to
say “you were” not “you was”. And “that
was” not “what was”
Throughout all of our writing we will be
focussing on using accurate spelling of the
common exception words in addition to
words containing the different Year 1 and
2 sounds. We will be securing our
understanding of spelling rules for adding
prefixes and suffixes to words correctly.
The children will continue to complete
daily phonics and guided reading sessions.
In handwriting they further develop their
joined handwriting in preparation for Year
3!
Maths
We are continuing to use the new 2014 Year 2
maths curriculum and make suitable links to our
topic, where relevant. Key skills include:
Partitioning 2-digit numbers in different
ways
Multiplication and division facts for x2
,x3, x5 and x10 tables
Adding and subtracting two 2-digit
numbers, estimating answers first
Developing an instant recall of number
bonds to 10, 20 and 100
Developing an instant recall of doubles
and halves to 10 + 10 then 2 digit
nmbers
Name and describe properties of 2D &
3D shapes
Measuring weight, capacity and length,
reading different scales
MUSIC
We continue to have a music specialist teaching
the children for a session every Wednesday.
The children will be learning to understand and
appreciate different styles of music. They will
learn about different music styles including
jazz, folk and pop and explain their likes and
dislikes.
Design and Technology
We will be learning about winding mechanisms.
After reading the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch we
will design our own winding mechanisms for a
lighthouse.
Art
In addition to developing our sketching skills, we
will be learning about sculpture. We will use
natural objects to create our own sculptures and
look at the work of famous sculptors.
Computing
We will be continuing to use scratch to learn to
program sprite. We will also learn to use the
painting and editing tools to create back ground
scenes and characters for our programmed sprite.
Science
Using our focus on living things as a
stimuli, we will be looking at habitats. We
will learn about different habitats and how
animals are suited to living in these
different habitats. The children will
continue to complete investigations in
science by exploring microhabitats in the
school grounds.
Following on from learning about seeds and
growing our runner bean seeds last term,
the children will learn more about growing
plants by planting and growing seeds in our
outdoor area!
Homework
The homework grid for this new topic contains
a range of activities for children to choose from
each week.
In the back of your child’s homework book is
the sets of common exception words for Year 1
and 2 which shows the words that your child is
working on. Children are encouraged to
practice these as much as possible at home as
we aim for children to be able to spell most of
them by the end of the year.
Reading journals (diaries) need to be in school
every day and handed in on a Friday signed to
show that your child has read at home at least
three times during the week. A short session
every day is even better! Please remember to
keep this journal filled in!
The handwriting sheets with spellings for the
following week will be handed out every
Friday. Children are expected to practice
fluently joining and spelling these words.
Children will be tested on these, or the common
exception words the following Friday.
PSHEe and RE
We will continue to reinforce our whole
school commitment to Rights and
Responsibilities. Year Two will have
“problem-solving circle time sessions”
In RE our theme will be ‘Nature and God’.
We will be learning about our relationships
with and responsibilities towards the
natural world.
PE
PE will take place on a Wednesday and will be
taught by a PE specialist. Athletics and striking
and fielding activities will be our focus this term.
Please make sure that your child has the
appropriate PE kit in school and that this is
clearly named!.
