“I was leading trainer when I met Mr. Dreyfus, that’s why I was half cocky, I didn’t care about meeting him, that’s the trouble when you get like that, if things get bad, you can’t get back going again, you should never, ever do that. He knew me like a book, he was like my surrogate father. He knew how to handle me, he’d say, ‘Don’t let this horse affect your judgment on the next one,’ and he’d always say, ‘Don’t scream at this jock, he’s riding for us later.’

“He said that old saying, ‘You can’t go broke making a profit’ doesn’t apply to this game, when you finally get a nice horse, you have to do as well as you can with him. It’s not like other things, because you might never get another horse this good, or you could take that money and buy four bad ones. I always tell everybody, if you’ve got kids to educate and a mortgage to pay, you have to sell.

“It was a little bit different years ago, a guy would have a couple of sons with him, that would cut down the expenses, but now, you have so much in them, even if they give you the horse, you have so much in them when you get them to the races.”

Elizabeth Voss hosed off her horse’s chest, shoulders and face while stand-ing on the Saratoga Race Course dirt track early Thursday afternoon. She finished, shook the water from her hands with a flick, took three steps and let out a long breath.

“Fshwooh.” You could almost hear it over the commotion in the winner’s circle and the tone of track announc-er Tom Durkin reciting the facts after the A.P. Smithwick Memorial steeple-chase stakes. Then the trainer did it again. Somewhere, the skies rumbled with thunder – far away but close enough to know it was there.

Six months after her father, veter-an trainer Tom Voss, died at 63, six months after she decided to manage the stable, six months after she said

she was going to Saratoga’s Oklaho-ma Annex with a stable of horses the way her father did, she won a Grade 1 steeplechase at Saratoga. Merrie-belle Stable’s Makari, an English import who met the Voss string at Saratoga two weeks ago, out-bobbed Demonstrative on the line to win the $100,000 Smithwick by a nose at 9-2.

“It’s not sinking in, it won’t sink in for a while,” Voss said after the photos, the hugs, a few tears, the champagne toast in the trustees room. “What’s it been 11 years since we won this race? was always one my dad would talk about. It’s been elusive for years. To have my first graded stakes win at Saratoga, with this race, it is amazing.”

Tom Voss called Paddy Smithwick, a Hall of Fame jump jockey who died in 1973, a second fa-ther. Smithwick’s son Patrick and Tom Voss were lifelong friends. Tom Voss would aim for a sharp Smithwick runner every year at Saratoga and won the race four times – with Cookie (1980), Mickey Free (1987), Brigade Of Guards (1997) and Anof-ferucantrefuse (2003). As Elizabeth said, it had been 11 years since a Voss accepted the Smithwick trophy.

Makari made sure there would not be a 12th. The 7-year-old broke in the middle and found a

spot inside, relaxed, turned off as Pleasant Wood-man stole to an early lead and the field of 10 un-folded. Heavily favored Eclipse Award winner Divine Fortune set up in second. Normally settled early, Demonstrative tugged into third, followed by Wanganui, Spy In The Sky and All Together. Makari barely made the third fence, skimming the wing after being pushed way inside by All Together. From there, the trip played out like a script.

With 7 furlongs to run, Makari was sixth, to All Together’s outside with three horses across the track in front of him. As usual, the tempo ratcheted on the final run up the backside. Pleasant Woodman still led coming to the second-last, but the sorting

had just begun. Never looking comfortable, Divine Fortune backed up. Spy In The Sky and Wanganui began to tire.

Like a dark cloud coming over those new condos downtown, Demonstrative advanced to second.

Makari entered the final turn third, just outside De-monstrative, but eased to the inside behind Pleasant Woodman and waited. Demonstrative responded

to Robbie Walsh and uncoiled long strides off the bend to go after Pleasant Woodman with purpose. Jack Doyle stayed quiet on the winner, let the inside path open and produced his horse. Demonstrative soared the last. Makari just jumped it, but lost no time and went up by a neck in the final sixteenth. Demonstrative, running his A race for the first time in 14 months, responded and battled back. They hit the wire together, one head going up and one going down in the give-and-take of Thoroughbred strides. While getting 12 pounds from the run-ner-up, Makari got the nod after 16 1/2 furlongs and nine jumps. Pleasant Woodman stayed on for third, beaten 7 1/4 lengths after 2 1/16 miles in 3:48.33. In his fifth try at the Smithwick, Divine Fortune was pulled up.

English-based jump jockey Doyle, in his second American ride, won a Grade 1.

“It was very quiet in the summer in England, I thought if I don’t do it now, I’m 25, I’d probably never do it,” he said. “I said I’d give it a go and see how it goes. It couldn’t have gone better than that.”

A winner of 15 races last season in England, Doyle has been riding out for Voss at Saratoga, and – like everybody else in the barn – liked what he

saw from Makari.“I knew of him (in England),” he said. “I had

never sat on him. From the first day he came here, he felt like a proper machine and he proved that today, hopefully he’ll improve off that.”

Makari won four times over English hurdles and twice more over the bigger chase fences. Those last two wins came in May at Uttoxeter (by 11 lengths) and in June at Newton Abbott (by 9 lengths) for top English trainer Nicky Henderson. Voss’ hus-band Gary Murray, the racing manager for Mer-riefield, saw the horse run at Cheltenham in March, remembered him and made the buy. He arrived July 18, straight from quarantine.

Voss and Murray took the conservative route early.

“We just kept a close eye on him. If he wasn’t eating, if he wasn’t anything, we wouldn’t have run,” she said. “He looked good after a long trip. We just wanted to make sure. Every day looked bet-ter and better so we said we’d give it a shot. He’s a beautiful mover. Watching him gallop on the turf, he’s gorgeous.”

He was even prettier Thursday, delivering the trainer’s first graded stakes score in a race her father held dear at a track he prowled – in the mornings aboard classy ex-racehorses and in the afternoons with stars both flat and jump.

Thursday, Tom Voss’ daughter posed for a win photo with her mother, young daughter, husband,

the Smithwick family. It felt right, even if a little bit different. The moment was lost on no one.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of her,” said Elizabeth’s mother and Tom’s widow Mimi. “She is a great horsewoman and her father’s death is so hard on all of us. I’m so glad that she won this race because this race was so important to her father. It meant a lot to him, so it means a lot to the rest of us.”

Edward Shapoff has downsized his breeding program over the years with a goal of keeping more racehorses and the chance for a faster return on the track and not being forced to wait on pregnant mares and growing foals.

He’s certainly very familiar with both. Shapoff, who races in the name of Chevalier Stable, grew up in racing, the son of a trainer and grandson of trainers. He’s owned and bred horses since the early 1970s and some, Expensive Decision, Forever Sil-ver and Silver of Silver to name just three, competed on racing’s biggest stages.

a year for just the right spot to run Sinistra. The spot was the $100,000 Evan Shipman Stakes at 9 furlongs and even though Sinistra raced plenty in the last year, and even at that dis-tance downstate, the trip and track was what they sought. Sinistra made the most of the chance and sprang the upset of the young Saratoga meeting, winning Thursday’s Evan Shipman for New York-breds at 27-1.

“He’d previously beaten a couple horses in the race, but the real thing is he wanted to run a mile and an eighth,” Shapoff said of his homebred 4-year-old gelding by New York-based stallion Stonesider. “We’ve been waiting a year. A year. Every time we tried to enter him in a race at a mile and an eighth it wouldn’t fill.”

The Evan Shipman filled, not to the rim but certainly with a strong collection of state-breds that included last year’s Albany winner Escapefrom-reality, the consistent multiple stakes winner Awesome Vision and the im-proving Big Business. Sinistra was dis-missed as a rank outsider, the longest

price in the field despite a fairly consis-tent record in 10 starts this year.

Sinistra prepped in a 1-mile open-company allowance race three weeks ago at Belmont Park, finish-ing third, after winning against state-breds going 1 1/16 miles in late June.

“We’ve never had the chance to run him a mile and an eighth and this was his first opportunity,” said Grusmark, winning his first stakes race at Sara-toga in a training career that started in 1971. “He ran like we thought he would. His races [at a] mile and a six-teenth, fast fractions, slow fractions, he’s just kind of a plodder and if you get him in good position he wears horses down.”

Sinistra did just that. Ros-ie Napravnik got a leg up from Grusmark for the first time on the gelding and put Sinistra behind the speed of Escapefromreality and 8-5 favorite Big Business. They raced just to the outside of Fox Rules and gave up some ground while racing a bit wide on the turns, but the inside part of the wet track didn’t seem like the place to be the last two days.

each other as they made their way into the far turn. Awesome Vision, looking to redeem for his second in last year’s Shipman, revved up but was caught four wide. The other four were out of it by the time Escapefromreality and Big Business hit the furlong marker on even terms.

Napravnik threw a few crosses, gave him two cracks right handed and got just enough acceleration to inch closer as the wire closed in. She cracked him one more time right be-fore the wire as his momentum car-ried him past the two leaders. The margin was a head over Big Business, with Escapefromreality a neck back in third and Awesome Vision another 1 1/4 lengths back in fourth.

“He’s the type of horse where he doesn’t have a huge kick, but he’ll keep grinding away, and he was stick-ing his neck out,” Napravnik said. “Karl told me he was kind of one-paced. He just kept grinding away. He’s a horse with a lot of heart.”

Sinistra, beaten a head in the King’s Point earlier this season, won for the third time in 11 starts this year. He’s the first stakes winner for the Grusmark and Chevalier Stable combi-nation since Weathered won the Grade 3 Next Move at Aqueduct in 2009.

Shapoff bred Sinistra out of the late Dixie Brass mare Margin for Error, who was winless in 16 starts from 1998 to 2000 but is the dam of 10-time winner Reversible Error and eight-time winner Preminger.

Sinistra is not the first Shipman winner for the Shapoff family. Ed-ward’s late father, Stanley “Skippy” Shapoff, trained 1993 winner Liver Stand when the race was at Belmont. The late Shapoff trained Hudson Count, second in Cannonade’s Ken-tucky Derby in 1974, and other top runners for Chevalier.

“We’re a small operation, but we’ve had our share of luck,” Edward Shapoff said. “Unfortunately we had to put the mare down, she became infirm. But we have other mares that I think will have some promising offspring. We have four mares. We’ve downsized over the years. I’d like more racehorses. At least with a little income, or the possibility of some income.”

I’m Wide Awake’s monstrous upset at nearly 21-1 odds in the finale Thursday at Saratoga Race Course was thrilling on its own.

The Exchange Rate gelding came into the off-the-turf claiming race with just one win in 26 starts and capped a huge late double payoff of $1,223. Throw in jockey Andre Worrie never before riding a winner at Saratoga and Assaf Ronen not exactly being a mainstay on the trainer standings and it all seemed pretty unbelievable.

Bloodstock agent Justin Casse saw Bullheaded Boy at last year’s Fasig-Tip-ton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale and was immediately struck by the colt’s appearance.

Casse then wondered how potential buyers would view Bullheaded Boy’s pedigree when entered in a 2-year-old in training sale. He trusted his instincts and bought the colt for $40,000. Bullheaded Boy won the sixth race Thursday at Saratoga for owner Gary Barber and trainer Todd Pletcher, confirming Casse’s instincts that the colt had potential.

“When I bought him at the sale I knew that Bullsbay had won the Whitney, and he was a son of Tiznow, who is of course a tremendous sire,” Casse said. “I thought there was potential there. Bullsbay is kind of an obscure sire be-cause he hasn’t bred a lot of mares.

“On the dam side you have a Pulpit mare [Sister Dyer], who is out of a Grade 2 winner, Belterra, who was a very good race filly, very precocious, a daughter of Unbridled. There are plenty of quality classic runners in the pedigree but I’d say for commercial reasons the pedigree was very obscure. But I knew he would sell well if I could get him to work fast.”

Bullheaded Boy sold for $115,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales June sale of 2-year-olds in training. Barber received a strong recommendation from Casse to buy the colt, who won Thursday by a half-length over Persuasive Devil.

“He was my favorite horse in the New York-bred sale,” said Casse. “He was so pretty that it didn’t really matter who he was by. I said to Gary if you can live with the pedigree this is the runner. And that’s where he went.”

Ronen later said the meaning of the victory was on owner Yehuda Cohen’s white and blue silks, which displayed the Star of David as a tribute. The flag of Israel was proudly displayed as a tribute to back home, where ongoing violence is again threatening the re-gion.

“This win was to protect me and to protect Israel,” Ronen said. “In times like this I feel I’m representing my country with those silks, and God blessed me with a win.”

The win was special for the trainer, and unexpected.

“The last time he ran he got clipped in the heels,” said Ronen, referring to I’m Wide Awake’s fifth-place finish in a 6-furlong claiming race July 10 at Belmont Park. “That’s when I liked him. Today, to tell you the truth, I didn’t like him.”

Ronen certainly liked I’m Wide Awake after the race. So did Worrie after riding his first Saratoga winner.

“The horse felt completely differ-ent,” said Worrie, who last rode I’m Wide Awake three starts back “I’m just happy I won my first race here.”

• Another day, another bizarre de-lay.

A miscommunication led the han-dlers of Uncle Southern to believe that the filly was scratched and after partially making their way to the pad-dock from trainer Linda Rice’s barn, turned around and headed home. She wasn’t scratched and was brought back to the paddock while the other four tacked-up entrants waited.

“I was worried, I liked my horse and I knew she could win the race,” jockey Luis Saez said of the 19-min-ute delay.

Uncle Southern, tacked up when she arrived in the paddock and dis-patched quickly with the rest of the field, won the 5 1/2-furlong off-the-turf allowance/optional by 3 1/2 lengths.

“She was ready, I felt that she could win the race,” Saez said of the 4-year-old New York-bred daughter of Uncle Camie.

The race was named in honor of Richard Jude Walsh, who died July 31 last year. John Durkin helped or-ganize the memorial, remembering his friend as “my best best man ... he even introduced me to my wife.”

Durkin and Walsh first came to Saratoga on the invitation of Alan Zura, who races in the name Ochre House Stables.

me to bet number 10. He was always liked long-shots and 10 wasn’t the favorite so I figured I’d go with it.”

The delay in the third wasn’t nearly as long as the near hour-long delay Wednesday, caused when Levender Road collapsed near the path from the paddock to the racetrack. Lavender Road was tak-en to a nearby veterinary clinic for treatement but had to be euthanized Friday due to a neck fracture.

• The delay in the third came after a delay in the second. Post time for the 1 1/8-mile maiden race was delay 13 minutes while horsemen, officials and fans waited out a downpour complete with thunder and lightning.

“I feel like I’m spending a good portion of my life in the paddock these days,” Todd Pletcher said after Dogwood Stable’s None Like Nolan won in his fifth career start.

The rain let up just before the start, which was a good one for None Like Nolan. The son of Malibu Moon hadn’t broken well in some of his previous races.

“Some of it wasn’t his fault,” Pletcher said. “Sometimes he broke a little slow but other times he got sandwiched by other horses, so it’s just been one thing or another.”

by a nose over Rare Eagle on the sloppy surface.“[We] held our position and when we came

down the lane, I told my horse, ‘Let’s get away from the other horse,’ ” Velazquez said. “He kind of waited and then the other horse came back again and he waited and then he put up a little fight. He made me work hard, but we got it.”

• The fifth race carried a little more meaning than a simple maiden claiming race for fillies and mares rained off the turf.

The race was named for Olivia’s Herd, a pro-gram named in honor of the late Olivia Saylor that helps horses in the Thoroughbred Retirement Foun-dation that are in the most need of special care and feeding. Olivia Saylor was the daughter of owner and breeder Paul Saylor, a regular contributor to the TRF.

Jockey Rosie Napravnik, who won the Evan Shipman Thursday aboard Sinistra, helped raise awareness for Olivia’s Herd earlier in the day by signing autographs at the NYRA charity booth ear-lier on the card.

Ice Wine Stable’s Boca Babe turned the race into her showcase, winning by 21 ½ lengths under John Velazquez in her career debut. The 3-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy took command at the 3/8ths pole and never looked back.

“She trained pretty good last year, just had a little set back,” Ice Wine’s David Reid said, explaining the filly’s late start to the races. “Wesley [Ward] wanted to back off with her and bring her back this year.”

The original plan was to give her one start on the grass, but the heavy rain that fell before the second race changed those plans. It also left a field of four, down from an original group of 10 entered for the 5 1/2-furlong grass race.

“When it started raining, coming off the turf, we didn’t know if she was going to run or not,” Reid said. “He [Ward] said, ‘we’re here and she’s training so good, let’s just give it a shot.’ It worked out well.”

The winner was claimed by trainer David Jacob-son.

Your mom may have taught you not to assume because, well we all know what it makes you, or maybe don’t judge a book by its cover, but did she ever have to teach you to not judge a horse by its name?

The Polynesian word KuneKune is translated into the English language as “fat and round.”

Kune Kune, the 5-year-old mare by Sir Percy out of Katy O’Hara, will be running in the Smirnoff Sorbet Caress stakes Friday. The mare got her name because of the way she used to look as a yearling; today she’s a different horse. Approaching her stall a bay head sticks out, with a sweet look in her eye, she softly nibbles on a jacket zipper, there are a lot of qualities to the mare’s personality and appear-ance, fat and round are not some of them. Trainer and owner of Kune Kune, James Nicol, has come all the

way from Newmarket, the heart of British flat racing, to give the filly an opportunity to run in the States.

This is not Nicol’s or Kune Kune’s first time in the US. For more than six years, Nicol worked as an assistant trainer to James Fanshawe, Group 1 winning trainer in Newmarket, and Elliott Walden, current CEO of Win-Star Farm. He worked for Walden during the time of Victory Gallop, winner of the 1998 Belmont Stakes, denying Real Quiet his Triple Crown title.

Nicol currently rents a few stables in Newmarket where he does some pre-training and keeps a few horses of his own, Kune Kune being one.

Nicol bought the filly in 2010 at the Doncaster Bloodstock Premiere Yearling Sale for $16,200. She won twice as a 2-year-old for Nicol, a maiden at Pontefract and a handicap at Kempton Park. Kune Kune pulled some muscles behind while preparing for a classic trial the next year.

“We just had to give her time off,” said Nicol. “By the time she was back it was the end of the English season so we thought to bring her over here, sell her.”

Kune Kune won her American debut, sprinting down the hill at Santa Anita for Nicol and trainer Neil Drysdale in November 2012. She finished second in her next start and was purchased by Steve Ballou and and Harriet Waldron and trans-ferred trainer Joan Scott at Tampa Bay Downs. Kune Kune won a turf allowance at Tampa, finished 10th in the Grade 1 Madison at Keeneland before hitting the board in a stakes at Indiana Downs and Canterbury Park. She finished last against allow-

This year, Kune Kune finished fifth at Bath and eighth at Ayr before Nicol made a return engagement, circling Friday’s feature.

“It’s worked well for us in the past (coming to the U.S.) we’ve never run in a stake but I think she is up to that ability,” said Nicol. “I think she needs to go around the bend, she’s always run best around a bend. We brought her over a couple of years ago to San-ta Anita and she won first time out down the hill. In the ideal world she breaks and is on top, we will work it out as we go, Julien Leparoux knows what he’s doing.”

Leparoux will be looking right and left for early speed.

To his left, Believe in Charlie will certainly be involved early.

Tom Bush has aimed the 4-year-old daughter of Indian Charlie for the

Caress since finishing second in the Intercontinental at Belmont Park in June.

“We’ve been pointing for this race for a few weeks now, we knew we were going to have one at Saratoga,” said trainer Tom Bush. “It’s nice that we had a little break between races too since she raced all winter.”

Believe in Charlie won twice earli-er this year at Gulfstream Park going 5 furlongs. She finished behind Free as a Bird, who will also be running in the Caress.

Running 5 ½ furlongs on the grass will have a lot of the horses breaking and trying to hit the front.

According to Bush, breaking is the filly’s strong suit.

“She’s an extra special gate filly,” Bush said. “She’s just exceptional leaving there, a lot of the time she leaves on the lead and we aren’t even trying to be on the lead.”

Bush and owner, Westbury Stables feel good about the filly coming into Saratoga.

“We’re happy with the filly, she’s been very consistent in the sprint rac-es on the grass, hopefully she will give us a good one,” Bush said.

Free as a Bird, trained by Ian

Wilkes, is coming off of two wins at Belmont this year. Free As A Bird has been running since February in her 2014 campaign for owner and breeder Elizabeth Valando. The mare comes in with three wins out of five starts since taking a break his winter, one mentioned earlier with the victory over Believe In Charlie. Joel Rosario rides for the fourth consecutive time.

Trainer Giuseppe Iadisernia shipped Angel’s South from Florida to Belmont Park this summer to pre-pare for her first start since April. The 6-year-old mare won a mile turf race at Saratoga last summer. Javier Cas-tellano rides the daughter of Tale of the Cat.

Barclay Tagg entered seven-time winner Munnings Sister for owner/breeder Charles Fipke. The 5-year-old daughter of Speightstown has yet to try the turf in 19 career starts. Corne-lio Velasquez rides.

Jewel of a Cat scourged Sarato-ga last summer when shipping in to upset the Coronation Cup for train-er Ben Perkins Jr. Owned by J and J Stable and GSP Racing, the 4-year-old filly has been winless since win-ning here last summer but finished a strong second against the boys in the McSorley at Monmouth two starts ago. Heaven Knows What returns to the stakes division after posting a win and two seconds against allow-ance company this spring. For years, I said it.“Whenever you’re ready.” For years, he laughed. “Not yet.”Then one day, it was yet. Thor-

oughbred Times went bust and Tom Law was on the market. September 15, 2012, Derek Jeter wound up on the waiver wire. I called my brother Joe, it was a no brainer, if we could make it work. I called Law as soon as I hung up with Joe. Yes, I was ambu-lance chasing (how do you think I hus-tled all those winners over jumps?), I called Law before the car had stopped spinning, smoke billowing, sirens in the distance.

Thoroughbred Times must have owned his phone, it failed to ring. Not a good sign. I sent an email, called mutual friends, searched the Internet, yelled from my back porch. We final-ly talked. Shellshocked, he was. Law’s office was locked, his desk would be auctioned off, he was filing paper-

work, hoping to collect what was owed to him. He sounded like he had some other offers, some ideas of his own. We talked some more. Law was getting married (to the great Liz may I add). He was thinking about moving back to Saratoga, his hometown. His job was long gone. Fourteen years of time, effort, energy – poof. Not that he was alone, Thoroughbred Times’ closure shot a cannonball through the sport.

By December, Law joined ST Pub-lishing, parent company of The Sara-toga Special. What a leap of faith, Law went from corporate America to goril-la America. Thoroughbred Times had 27 employees when it crashed, nearly 50 at its zenith. ST? Tom would make three. But, damn, this was Derek Jeter. For 20 years, every Yankees’ third baseman has looked left and every Yankees second baseman has looked right and felt at ease. Now, just watch the ball because you know you’re cov-

ered there and of course he’ll get a hit when it’s needed.

Since December, 2012, Law has been that cog in the ST wheel.

“I can do it,” Law says, every day, always smiling.

It could be anything. Can you write the Evan Shipman? Can you walk while I take the golf cart? Can you pick up Jack? Can you order me a sandwich? Can you clean up this pre-view? Can you find us an office? Can you teach these interns? Can you post those stories on the website?

“I can do it,” Law says, every day, always smiling.

Early in the meet, I thought of Law and our ability to give him a job, our ability to keep him in the sport. We’re small – a mote in the world of racing – but that was big for us. Big for the game too.

Over the years we’ve said goodbye to hard-working, dedicated, energetic, talented allies of Thoroughbred rac-ing. They worked for other people, other entities, but they got out before it was too late, before they were lifers.

The sport loses when people like that leave. I think of Tim Molloy, Matt Groff, Graham Wolfram, Josh Cooper, Don Drew, Quint Kessenich and so many others. Every time the sport loses members, it slips another notch, the fabric has another hole. In this game, everybody is a recruiter, if you like the game, you can usual-ly convince someone else to like the game. They loved the game but need-ed to make a better living.

The sport’s better with Tom Law in it.

Every morning, he’s at the picnic ta-ble at the Morning Line Kitchen, past performances flipping like cards in a deck, an intern waiting for an assign-ment. Every afternoon, he rolls into the office, right pant leg tapered with a tie to avoid his bike chain, stories written, stories still to write, ads to sell, interns to cajole.

He doesn’t stay long, turning on his heel, “I’m going to write the hell out of the Evan Shipman,” he says.

Friday, he’ll say, “I’m going to write the hell out of the Smirnoff Sorbet Ca-ress.”

Saturday, he’ll say, “I’m going to write the hell out of the Lure, De La Rose and Test.”

Sunday, he’ll say, “I’m going to write the hell out of the Waya.”

By Monday, he’ll be onto the sales coverage, writing late into the night. It’s late as I type. Law sits in the office next door, keys clacking, he is indeed writing the hell out of the Evan Shipman.

He recites winners from the Skippy Shapoff stable, Forever Silver, Expen-sive Decision, Liver Stand…only Law would know winners of the Shapoff stable. A navy sport coat and a wrin-kled suit hang from his door, a tie around the door knob, an air pump sits in the middle of the floor, a thesau-rus and a dictionary within his reach, a cherry pie sits on a pile of newspa-pers, waiting for a candle.
