Year 13 Support from Student Guidance
Summer 2020
Throughout the summer we have encouraged students to;
• Attend Personal Statement & UCAS workshops
• Explore university/job/apprenticeship options
• Attend virtual university visits
• Take part in virtual Work experience & Summer Schools
• The Student Guidance Pearltrees page has lot of careers
information – students need to log in and explore the resources
Start of Year 13
From the first week of Tutorial*, Year 13 students have been emailed directly and asked to;
Continue with UCAS application & Personal Statement… (using the UCAS Planning Document** )
If you haven’t already registered for UCAS then please follow the ‘UCAS 21 Registration’ document** to make an account
If you don’t already know them ask your teachers/tutor for your predicted grades
*Please refer to additional Parent Letter for an explanation about how Tutorial will run
whilst we are on a blended learning timetable

Year 13 Early Applicants
All Year 13 have received an email regarding early applications
Anyone who is planning to apply for Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science as well as all courses at Oxford and Cambridge
should be known to Mrs Sellars

PREDICTED GRADES
•UCAS Predicted grades are based on performance in year 12, which includes internal assessments, non-examined assessments, bookwork, classwork, homework, attitude to learning, practical performance and may include performance in the forthcoming IE2 •UCAS predicted grades are made on what the student is likely to achieve if they sit their exam next summer
•If students make a request to subject teachers to increase their predicted grades, an opportunity will be given to demonstrate a higher level of performance in the upcoming IE2 exam. Thereafter, if the IE2 performance meets the required level of performance, then the subject teacher may change the predicted grade. • If the student is an Early Applicant they must keep Mrs Sellars notified as these students are working to an internal deadline of the 25 September for the actual UCAS deadline of the 15 October
Admissions Tests – Additional Entry Req’s
Some students will sit an admissions test as part of their university application…
• UCAT – for Medicine and Dentistry taken at a Pearson Vue Centre or at home
• LNAT – for some Law courses taken at a Pearson Vue Centre
• Maths tests for some University Mathematics degrees

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW? TUITION FEES
With tuition fees of up to £9,250, how can you afford to go to uni?
• Eligible students won’t have to pay any tuition fees up front.
• A Tuition Fee Loan is available to cover the fee charged by your university
or college.*
• A Tuition Fee Loan doesn’t depend on household income.
• SFE pay the Tuition Fee Loan directly to your university or college.
• Tuition Fee Loans have to be repaid but only when you’ve finished or left
your course and your income is over the repayment threshold.

• Maintenance Loans have to be repaid but not until you’ve finished or left
your course and your income is over the repayment threshold.

MAINTENANCE LOAN MAXIMUM LEVELS FOR 2019/20
If studying overseas as part of a UK course, Maintenance
Loan support is still available, up to £9,963 for 2018/19. i
• You won’t make repayments until your income is over the repayment
threshold.
• If you study a full-time course, you will be due to start repaying in the
April after graduating or leaving your course.
• You’ll repay 9% of your income over the threshold and if you’re employed
deductions will be made from your pay through the HMRC tax system*.
• If your income falls below the threshold, your repayments will stop.
• Any outstanding loan balance will be cancelled 30 years after entering
repayment.

Scholarships & Bursaries – for some students
Many universities and colleges offer financial support to their students through bursaries and scholarships
Bursaries:
• Linked to personal circumstances and often household income
• Awards can include fee waivers or cash
Scholarships:
• Can be linked to academic results or outstanding ability in an area such as sport, music or art
• Can be subject specific and are limited in numbers
Additional funding – for some students
Disabled Students Allowance • Non-repayable, non-income assessed • Can help with the cost of additional study related support www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas/overview
University Support Fund • Provides help for students through a range of schemes including Day to Day Support and
Accommodation Fee Support. • The fund is discretionary so whether or not you get an award depends on your individual

Learning Support Fund (NHS students) offers support for:
• Practice placement travel and/or temporary accommodation costs • students experiencing financial hardship • www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/LSF.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
• Ask questions & discuss options with your son/daughter • Use the Student Guidance Pearltrees page, ask them to log in and
show it to you
• Make sure that they are accessing the Tutorial Presentation weekly and acting on any opportunities we send out – often these are first come first served
• Encourage your son/daughter to book a Student Guidance interview to explore their options
• Plan open day virtual visits and prepare questions/undertake
research beforehand
