Objectives:

The overall aims and objectives of this qualification are to enable students to:

• actively engage in the process of music study • further develop performing skills • further develop composing skills to demonstrate the manipulation of musical ideas and the use of

musical devices and conventions • broaden musical experience and interests, develop imagination and foster creativity • appraise contrasting genres, styles and traditions of music, and develop understanding of musical

contexts and a coherent awareness of musical chronology

Summer Tasks :

• Aim to listen to all of the 12 Set Works to familiarise yourself with the different genres. You can find the Set Work Titles in the A2 Overview at the end of the accompanying booklet: Assessment Objective 3

• All of the Set Works should be accessible via Youtube or itunes. Spend at least 15 minutes listening to each work to familiarise yourself with the Set Works Assessment Objective 3

• Two of the Set Works will form part of your summer work and the tasks are included in this booklet.

• One of the essays is a comparative essay (18 marks) from the Instrumental Set List and the second essay includes writing about specific musical features from the Applied Set list (13 marks) Assessment Objective 3

• Aim to practice your instrument on a regular basis during the summer, as you will be working towards preparing for a 12 -15 minute recital programme. You should aim to practice for at least half an hour every day. Your first performance will be marked using the Edexcel marking criteria. Your pieces should at the very minimum be equivalent to a Grade 6 level Assessment Objective 1

• Wider listening: to broaden your listening you should keep a listening log and aim to listen in depth to at leas 2 pieces each week during the summer. The pieces should be chosen from each of the main musical periods, for example: 2 pieces from the Renaissance period, two from Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century Assessment Objectives 2 and 3

The Hazeley Academy A2 MUSIC EDEXCEL 2016- 2017 Course Content

UNIT 4 Extended Performance Unit 4: Extended Performance:: Students

have opportunities to extend their performance skills as soloists and/or as part of an ensemble. Teachers and students can choose music in any style. Any instrument(s) and/or voice(s) are acceptable as part of a 12-15 minute assessed performance of a balanced programme of music. This unit is assessed internally and is worth 30%.

Unit 5 Composition and Technical Study Students complete composition(s) and/or a

technical study. The composition section further develops students’ composition skills in creation of a final three minute piece in response to a chosen brief. The technical study section builds on the knowledge and awareness of harmony gained in Unit 3 section C through the medium of pastiche studies. This is completed as controlled conditions coursework and is worth 30%.

Unit 6 Further Musical Understanding Students focus on listening to music, familiar and

unfamiliar, and understanding how it works. Set works from the anthology provide the focus for much of the unit. They should learn how to compare and contrast pairs of excerpts, contextualise music and identify harmonic and tonal features.

Section A: Aural analysis, Section B: Music in context and Section C: Continuity and change in instrumental music.

Assessment is through a 2-hour examination paper set and marked by Edexcel worth 40%.

Listening Diary

Name:

Unit 6 of your A2 Music exam requires you to listen to recordings of a variety of musical extracts. In addition to the practice you will do in class it would be very beneficial for you to do some music listening outside of class time.

This booklet is to be used every time you sit down to deliberately listen to a piece of music and think about its musical features, not just listening to the radio whilst reading a magazine!

Try to listen to a wide of styles, think about:

• Is it major or minor? • What is the shape of the melody? • What is the texture? • What instruments are being used? • What is the metre? • What is the general structure? • What cadences can you hear?
