HSC 2018 The HSC is now upon us, and we are actually more than halfway through. I would like to thank Mr Denni Fourfouris for his liaison with NESA, and Ms Toula Demertze, the Presiding Officer, managing all supervision and administration of the HSC. The exams finish on Friday, 9 November, which is earlier this year, than last year. Year 12 Final Responsibilities We finished the End of Term 3 with a beautiful graduation assembly. It was very well coordinated by Ms Maria Dracopoulos and Mr Jim Nicolls. They were supported by a huge team of staff and students. Special mention needs to be made of all the behind the scenes work done by Ms Debbie Wileman, one of the school’s Administrative Staff. The two wonderful Music teachers, Mr Nabil Cassis and Ms Jennifer Fernandez did a wonderful job preparing the band, the choir and the Year 12 Music class to celebrate Year 12’s final day. As is Kingsgrove practice, the two outgoing Captains induct the new incoming Captains, who then chair the Year 12 Farewell Assembly. I took great pleasure in watching Ms Angela Ferguson, the new Prefects Coordinator, and Elbert and Jennifer induct the 2019 Captains, Angela Basevska and Lukas Giakoumis.

The next day, Year 12 and staff celebrated the end of Year 12 students’ formal education at the annual Year 12 Picnic. I would like to thank Ms Belinda Jang and Ms Lisa Harvey for their work in organising this memorable day! Completion of Year 12 responsibilities After the HSC Year 12 will formally ‘sign out’ of school. Students whose family names are from A – L will sign out on Tuesday 13 November, and from M-Z on Thursday 15 November. The Year 12 Formal will then be held on Monday 19 November, 2018. I know we are all looking forward to this wonderful celebration. Induction of 2018 Captains and Prefects I was very pleased that the school inducted the two new school captains Angela and Lukas into their leadership roles at the recent Year 12 Farewell Assembly. I look forward to our Prefect Induction Ceremony next Tuesday, 6 November, 2018 where parents and staff will attend as we induct our new Prefect Body. Captains: Angela Basevska and Lukas Giakoumas Vice Captains: Emmanuela Savva and Leilani Fong Sport Captains: Ashley Ingall and Mark Fokas Student Liaison Reps: Sam Hodgson and George Ioakimidis Prefects: Ben Bayas, Coco Chen, Christopher Gazilas, Zamie Hamze, Jason Ma, Kerry Nguyen, Christopher Sambur and Samantha Wong. HSC 2019 The new HSC cohort, 2019 started their HSC Courses on Monday, 29 October. New timetables have been issued to those students who met the subject selection deadline. Other students will commence their new timetables on Monday, 12 November.

I am pleased to announce that we will be introducing a new Extension Course this year, Extension Science. This is the first year it has been taught in NSW. We offer a wide range of Extension courses, with Kingsgrove offering Mathematics Extension 2, English Extension 2, History Extension, and Modern Greek Extension. This enables our most capable students to push themselves in the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) most challenging HSC Courses. At Kingsgrove, we encourage all HSC students in Term 4 of Year 11 to maintain 12 units of study, and make a balanced decision at the start of Year 12 in 2019.

New Basketball Courts The school has finally had a sign off and we opened the new basketball courts to students at the end of week 2. We are very pleased with the courts (as are the students!) and look forward to many years of use. We have imposed a few rules to maintain the courts, and for basic safety.

No food or drink on the courts.

It is an ‘active’ area, so students

cannot sit around the edges and

watch games.

Bags need to be stored safely

around the edges of the courts.

Welcome to Term 4, a very busy term for all our students and staff with on-going assessments, academic reports being written for students and, of course, the HSC examinations for our Year 12 students. These exams are very important for our students and will have an influence on their futures beyond Kingsgrove High School, as a school we wish them every success in their endeavours. For the record, there are 117 HSC written exams totalling around 300 hours between the first exam on 18 October and the final exam on 9 November, and around 80 000 students attending 750 HSC exam centres staffed by over 7,500 supervisors and presiding officers. While we still have exams to go, some of the 5,500 markers have started marking. All students attended Year meetings in the first week of term and again our ‘common language’ of ‘WEAR IT PROUD’, ‘RIGHT PLACE; RIGHT TIME’ and ‘OFF AND OUT OF SIGHT’ was explained in detail. We also discussed a number of other issues including banned items, students were reminded that chewing gum is a banned item at school and we would ask that our school

community supports us in maintaining a cleaner and more hygienic environment at school. We would also like to remind families of the need for siblings who are meeting their younger siblings at either of the two Kingsgrove Primary campus sites that they are to wait off the primary school site. For Caroline Street pick-ups, we request students to wait at the gate until the primary school bell rings. For the Kingsgrove Road campus, we request students wait under the Cola in the Kingsgrove High School site. During Week 7 we will hold our second Year Four GaT Taster Day. This is an important opportunity for Year Four students from our local primary schools to visit Kingsgrove High School for a day and participate in a range of curriculum based learning activities designed for Gifted and Talented students. Information regarding this initiative has been sent to local primary schools and we look forward to hosting them on the day. Our feature faculty this issue…. Junior Languages DID YOU KNOW? The following changes have occurred for Languages Learning. The Languages K–10 Key Learning Area (KLA) includes new Chinese, French,

German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish K–10 syllabuses. In each new syllabus there are support materials and advice on supporting students with special education needs.

When will the new French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Korean and Spanish syllabus

be taught in NSW?

Years 7–10 Language Learning Requirements and Expectations: • Students are required to study 100

hours of one language in one continuous 12 month period.

• Students develop their language skills by participating in a range of activities that involve: interacting with the teacher and peers in the classroom, and with known adults in a range of situations; accessing and responding to a range of texts, including authentic materials; and composing a range of spoken, written, digital and multimodal texts.

• Students build knowledge and understanding of sound and writing systems, and vocabulary, and analyse and develop understanding of grammatical structures and features.

• They reflect on the interrelationship between language, culture and identity.

• For the first time, content is provided and presented in three ways for students: students who are learning a second or additional language, students who have prior learning and or experience, and students with a background in the language.

In addition to subject-based content, Languages syllabuses address important contemporary themes and general capabilities as students prepare to live and work successfully in the 21st century. These include Australian Curriculum cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities and other learning across the curriculum areas identified by NESA. Where can I find more information? YEAR 11 AT SYDNEY KINGS BASKETBALL GAME Some lucky Year 11 students were given the opportunity to attend the opening NBL game of the 2018/19 season at Qudos Bank Arena. The game also saw the return of Andrew Bogut ex NBA champion who has returned to Australia.

The Kings played the Adelaide 36ers who lost 94-83. The students had fun and enjoyed this unique experience. Penny Karanasos Year 11 Year Adviser

KOKODA TRAIL Tara Samuels successfully participated in the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge sponsored by Kingsgrove RSL. She is the second KHS student (and the first female) from Kingsgrove High School to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Read all about her experiences below. On 1 October until the 12 October, I was in Papua New Guinea completing the Kokoda trail. There was a group of sixteen of us, two leaders and fourteen trekkers. There were eight guys and six girls and we were trekking for 10 days. I was originally very nervous and wasn’t sure what I had gotten myself into. I just didn’t know what to expect. The first day we started very late heading off at about 1pm and we only walked about 5.6km that day. It was our shortest day but it was the worst day for me. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to endure this for another nine days. It really got to me! I was just so overwhelmed that I was actually in a different country for the first. However, I am so glad that I was able to complete this journey because it was such an incredible and amazing experience. Throughout the ten days there were times where it was really easy and other times where you felt like you just wanted to give up but you just copped it on the chin and soldiered on. The weather over there was crazy, the heat and humidity was nothing compared to back home. This is where a lot of people struggled as you would just be constantly sweating and needing to keep drinking lots of water so you don’t dehydrate. I was drinking between three to four litres a day. There were no proper toilets or showers, which meant you would have to bathe in a freezing cold creek with others around watching you and you would have to do your business in a small little hut with bugs all around. We stopped at several villages along the way where they sold cans of soft drink and

fruit. The fruit over there was nothing compared to what I had ever tried before, it was just so sweet and succulent. Everyone is just so nice and friendly in PNG they have nothing but you always see a smile upon their faces. They just embrace what they have and are just happy to have the little things they have. The kids don’t have much clothing, some don’t go to school and others have no toys to play with but they just make their own fun. I was very fortunate to have witnessed a class full of preps, first years and second singing three songs. It was just so beautiful as they were just generally happy and it brought some tears to my eyes. The carriers played a big part in helping us get across the extreme challenging uphills and the slippery dangerous downhills and the scary river crossings. They would come out of nowhere and help you out at challenging parts of the trail. If you had fallen over they would be there in a couple of seconds to help you up. Everyone was just so supportive and we all got along as one big group. Completing this trail has actually made me see things differently and realise how grateful I am to be given so many opportunities in Australia and what we take for granted. I am thankful that I get to come home to a warm home cooked dinner and get to take long hot showers. I get to sleep in a warm and cosy bed with a roof over my head. I am also just full of gratitude towards what our soldiers endured. They had barely any medical supplies, and were undergoing a battle in such ridiculous terrain. I wanted to walk in their footsteps and get a sense of what they encountered. It was nothing compared to what they saw and or heard and it was a breeze for me compared to what they had to do. I respect their bravery and courage and we wouldn’t have what we have today if it wasn’t for them, as they gave their today for our tomorrow.

I am so thankful to have been given this opportunity as it made me see that if I can successfully complete the Kokoda Trail that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to and I’m not going to let anyone stand in the way of that. Tara Samuels ~ Year 11

YEAR 11 CROSSROADS PROGRAM Crossroads is a mandatory program for students in Year 11 and/or Year 12 in NSW government schools. It is designed to help senior students address issues of health, safety and wellbeing at a time when they face significant changes and challenges in their lives.

Crossroads aims to prepare and support these students as they encounter situations related to identity, independence and their changing responsibilities. Crossroads aims to build students’ sense of empowerment and respect for themselves and others.

The three day program consisted of six tutorials based on study skills, drug education, sexual health, safe travel, mental health and independence. The final day was an amazing day camp of

fun filled activities and team building skills.

A big thank you to Ms. Moors, Mr Orsaris, Mrs Ferguson, Ms Vojkovic, Mr Williams and Ms King for running the sessions and giving up their valuable time for this wonderful program. I know the students really appreciated it, and I believe it has given our students the best start for their final year of high school.

Also, a big thank you to St George Youth Services for providing their services to our school on their drug education presentation.

Congratulations to all the students. Your behaviour and attitude towards this program were excellent.

YEAR 11 AT THE COLOUR RUN Year 11 students participated in the Colour Run at Sydney Olympic Park. There was lots of fun and colour involved. The largest running series in the world, “The Happiest 5K on the Planet” has been experienced by over 6 million runners worldwide in 35+ countries, so Kingsgrove High students were in for a treat.

By participating in the Colour Run students have contributed towards the Starlight Children’s Foundation. A big congratulations to all our students and teachers who participated. Penny Karanasos Year 11 Year Adviser

Kingsgrove High School Careers Year 10 second chance for Work

Experience

During Weeks 8 (December 3 – 7, 2018) and 9 (December 10 – 14, 2018) of this

term, Year 10 will have another opportunity to participate in Work Experience. This

is non-compulsory for those who completed their Work Experience back in Term 2,

but is compulsory for those who have yet to complete Work Experience. Previously

many students explored working at various retail stores in the hope of gaining a

casual job. For many this eventuated in a casual job. This time, however, students

are encouraged to explore work that is more career orientated. So if your child is

interested, for example, in entering into the construction industry, then it is

recommended that they ‘try out’ this area, to see if this is the field they would like to

work in, in the future.

Kingsgrove High School Careers News Reminders

Edmodo: Don’t forget that Edmodo (Years 10 – 12) and Google Classroom (Year 12) is

a vital tool for students gaining access to many resources including sample Resumes, Cover letters as well as casual jobs, Uni open day info, apprenticeships and traineeships available, and any upcoming courses/excursions being held through the school. If any parents would like access to Edmodo, please contact me in the Careers Office for further information.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships: Currently I have been receiving a lot of

information about apprenticeships and traineeships available with many employers across Sydney. From childcare, to auto mechanics, to electricians, to business services, to landscaping and the list just keeps going on and on. If students would like to get started on their career or they are planning on starting up in 2019, then come and see me to get information so you can get your applications in before the end of the HSC rush.

USI – Unique Student Identification Number: If students are planning on doing

any kind of training at some stage in their life, whether it is now at school, or even after you finish school, then you will need a USI. A USI is a reference number made up of numbers and letters, unique to each student. A USI Number will stay with the student for life, and must be recorded with any nationally recognised VET course they undertake. So if students want to study at TAFE (or any other VET provider), to gain a White Card, complete a first aid or CPR course, an RSA or RCG course, etc. then they will need a USI. Go to this link to acquire one. It takes about 5 minutes to do. You need one form of identification (such as a Medicard card) and it is free. https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-your-usi

Job Jump: As a school we subscribe to this incredibly useful website (and tool) to give

students very important information regarding careers, courses, tertiary institutions, ATAR results needed for various courses, as well as job and pay information. To register, choose Kingsgrove High School in the drop down menu, then use ‘kingsgrove’ as the password. This is available to all students and families from Year 7 onwards.
