Principal’s Report

Exciting Times

If you have driven past the school just recently, you will have noticed that there is something missing. B Block has almost been totally demolished and cleared away. This is just the beginning of the major capital works that will be visually changing the school over the next two years.

B Block has made way for a new technology building which will improve the way in which subjects such as food technology, hospitality, textiles and design, wood and metal work, construction and engineering science will be delivered.

Not only is the view to the future exciting for students and staff alike; bricks and mortar coming down really is something to witness. In an historical year for Wauchope High School (it turns 50 this year), the story continues as history continues to be made.

Subject Selections

Each year, at this time of the year, we go through the process of selecting subjects and coming up with a timetable that best reflects student choices. This is a complex task which has to take into account the resources we have available.

The fantastic feature about the way it is done at Wauchope High School is that all students get a say in which subjects appear on the timetable and which do not. As was explained at our Subject Selection Nights, this does not mean that every subject will run. However, it does mean that the timetable meets the needs of the majority of our students.

The Subject Selections Nights were well attended and it is always terrific to chat with the families of our students.

School Uniform

Over the past few weeks it has been very noticeable, when our students assemble, that so many of our students are in school uniform.

When wearing uniform students recognise themselves as an integral part of the school community and, amongst other things, it assists in developing pride in representing their school.

I would like to thank our school community in supporting the school in this manner. I would also like to acknowledge the staff of Wauchope High School and Ms Joanne Jones for their contributions.

Author Tristan Bancks, who wrote the teen book series

Mac Slater and Coolhunter, came to WHS to share his

talents with our students. The 36 year old, a former Home

and Away (TV series) star loves to travel. His novels and

film work now make up more of his life than his acting

career.

Bancks has recently become an ambassador for camp

Quality. He has recently worked with SBS and Film

Australia to create a short film intended to inspire primary

school classes to spend five minutes each day changing

the world in some way.

AN END OF AN ERA!!!

Our familiar B Block

building (TAS) looks

even less than this

now. It has been

crushed and

recycled to form the

gravel of our new car

park. Keep up with

the reconstruction of

Wauchope High

projects on our web

page.

2010 Nominations for school leaders.. Congratulations for standing up and

being counted!!!

TOCAL Visit

Stephen Crick a lecturer at Tocal College of Agriculture at

Paterson came and talked to Year 10 and Year 11 about the

rural opportunities and careers in this field. The college

may support a career camp for our seniors later in the year.

Marine Studies Sushi and Major Projects AGQUIP GUNNEDAH!!

Year 11 students who have nominated to

become 2011 captains and vice captains

reflected the quality of self confidence and

initiative that Wauchope High helps

develop in its seniors. As always, it is a

tough call to stand up and nominate for a

leadership position, as Australia has

recently seen in the election, so all of

these students are to be congratulated,

irrespective of whether they make the final

captain selection.

Who knew that sushi started as a way of preserving fish

2400 years ago, when fermenting rice was packed around

the fish and the fermented rice juices preserved the fish?

Year 9 Marine studies now know as they also learn to

prepare a healthy and fun new type of food.

Thanks to Mrs

Koch for her

excellent sushi

making instruc-

tion to the

classes.

Year 9 and 10 Marine

Studies students are

completing and presenting

their major projects. Marine

Studies teachers are now

looking at the options of a

trip to Coffs Harbour early

term 4 to go whale watching

on a boat and visit the cute

seals and porpoises at the

Coffs Porpoise Pool.

Mr Dave Starr and Mr

Adrian Palmer with

staff support took a

bus load of students to

Ag Quip last week. It

was an early start and

the weather was not

promising, raining all

the way to Gunnedah.

However, the students

had a great day in the

wet and the mud.

4

The bus trip was a

highlight in itself as

students bonded

amongst the movies

and sleep and

games.

Looking forward to it

again!

Thanks to all the

staff and parents

involved.
