Why is QCS important and what
impact does it have?
Example QCS Question
Q. Which of the following identified a similarity between the ways in which the woman and the landscape are represented?
A. Both focus on complex forms to reflect the woman’s feelings.
B. Both deliberately distort or exaggerate natural forms.
C. Both manipulate light and shade in similar ways.
D. Both use forms that have been simplified.
Figure 1 shows a painting by Doris (“Dod”) Procter. It portrays a young Indian
woman at the time she moved from India to England to marry Procter’s brother (in
1919). The background of the painting shows the coast of Cornwall in southern
England, the area to which she moved.
Example QCS Question

C. Both manipulate light and shade in
similar ways.
D. Both use forms that have been
simplified.
Background is not complex
Light is used differently on
woman/backgroundBoth appear real- have
not been distorted.
Example QCS Question
Q. Of the following, which best
describes the woman’s state of mind
as revealed by the way her hands are
positioned?
Right Hand Left Hand
A. distracted melancholy
B. tense resilient
C. hopeful hopeless
D. poised relaxed

Queensland Core Skills Test• The QCS Test contributes information for the calculation of
Overall Positions (OPs) which are used to select students for university entrance.
• 4 papers:
-Writing Task (600 words)
-Short Response
-2x Multiple Choice papers
• The results achieved for each of the 4 test papers are combined into one grade, ranging from A to E.
• Variety of stimulus materials, such as prose passages, poetry, graphs, tables, maps, mathematical and scientific data, cartoons and artistic works.
Why do we stress the
importance of the QCS test?
• How well students perform as a cohort on QCS will have a
huge impact on individual results.
– Scales each subject
– Scales the school’s performance
Difference QCS can make
• Slide about the difference QCS makes to
OPs.
QCS preparation program at BSHS
• Students are being asked to complete practice multiple
choice questions via survey monkey-once a fortnight.
• Whole group information sessions later in Term 3 and early
Term 4.
• Practice QCS test early in Term 4.
• QCS preparation in ARC from Term 4 and throughout Year
12.
What is an Overall Position (OP)?
What is an OP?
• OP = Overall Position
• student's position in a state wide rank order
based on their overall achievement in authority
subjects.
• OP1 (highest) to OP25 (lowest)
• Students seeking an OP:
– Authority Subjects contribute
– At least 3 of 6 subjects must remain unchanged
through Years 11 & 12
– Sit the Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS)
Achievement
and Position
are not the
same thing.
Changing a
subject does
not mean it
‘doesn’t
count’
The cohort

individual
achievement
400
200
• 5 Achievement bands:
– Very High Achievement (VHA)- Very Limited Achievement (VLA)
• Achievement bands separated into 10 rungs
• Each student assigned a SAI (subject achievement indicator).
• Score between 400 and 200.
• SAIs show individual achievement compared with the achievement of other students in each subject at BSHS.
How are students positioned?
OP Myth 1: To get an OP1, it's better to
study some subjects than others.MAB, MAC, Physics, Chemistry,
Biology
Philosophy, MAB, MAC, Art,
Chemistry (change to ENX)
Legal, Modern History, Maths A, French,
Biology (changed), Art
Philosophy, Japanese, Modern History,
ENX, MAB, BMN
There are a HUGE range of subject combinations in the
OP1 range from last year- these are just a snapshot.
**QCAA Data: OP Rank Ranges**
Min MaxAll VHA 1 8
All HA 2 17
All SA 7 24
All LA 15 25
All VLA 22 25
OP Myth 2: If you get certain results, you
will be guaranteed a certain OP.
Provisional OP meeting
• What happens in the Provisional OP meeting?
Provisional OP meetings
• 3 meetings across Year 11 and 12 (Semesters 1, 2 & 3)
• Experienced learning mentors (Principal, Dean of Students,
Dean & Deputy Deans of Teaching and Learning, Head of
Junior/Senior School, Head of Support Services, Heads of
Year, Heads of Department, Guidance Officers).
• 20 minute conversation
• Preparation=completed reflection Qs & learning goals
(students had time to work on this in ARC last week).
• Students will take home documentation & this will be also be
sent home to parents.
Reflection Sheet
Before the meeting:
• QTAC (course search)
How are provisional OP results
calculated?
• Uses student achievement at end of Semester 1.
• QCS subject means & school mean (5 year average).
• OP Cut-off parameters (5 year average).
• “Provisional OP range” not a “prediction”. Multiple
variables: cohort performance on QCS, how other students
perform in subjects & subject means.
Provisional OP timelines
• Begin this week and continue into Week 5.
• Students will receive an email regarding the provisional
OP meeting time. (It is expected that students set a
reminder and come with prepared resources to the
meeting).
• If students cannot attend the meeting, it is their
responsibility to let their learning mentor know.

.Not necessarily in order of your results- this is
where your position in relation to everyone else
and the subject QCS means come into play.
• LOA=Level of Achievement. VHA-VLA, 1-10
• Sems= Semesters that you have studied
these subjects- if you change a subject this
number will change.
Provisional OP Score Summary
Z Sub= This indicates
how far above or below
the cohort subject mean
the student is.
SAIs show one student’s achievement in relation to the
achievement of other students in that subject in that
school. SAIs range from 400 (highest performing
student in that subject in that school) to 200 (lowest
performing student in that subject in that school). This
is regardless of your level of achievement.

Scaled Subject Achievement Indicator.
This number determines the order that the
subjects contribute to the provisional OP-
the higher the number, the higher the
contribution.
Provisional OP Score Summary
OAI= Overall Achievement Indicator. The OAI indicates how well a
student has performed across the Years 11 and 12 subjects,
compared with all other students in the same school. The OAIs
indicate a rank order for all OP-eligible students within the school.
Scaled= Scaled OAIs provide a single rank order for the whole State. These
scaled OAIs compare each student with all other students in the State,
regardless of their combination of subjects and regardless of the school
attended.

Selection Rank Pathways
Pathway options
• For some students it will be better to complete a
certificate course and use the Selection Rank to get into
university rather than an OP.
• Our priority is to open up pathway options for students.
• Students will have very limited university course choices
when it comes to university courses with an OP15-25.
• Students can still go for an OP with 5 Authority subjects
and a certificate or Diploma course. We have a large
number of students on this pathway.
Real example
QTAC Selection Rank
• For OP students, your OP is converted to a selection rank
OR
• A rank score is calculated using weightings developed by QTAC
– Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre
Qualification Selection Rank OP ‘equivalent’
Certificate III 68 15/16
Certificate IV 72 12/13
Diploma 82 8/9
AMEB Grade 7/8 84 8/9
**Theory component required with AMEB Grade7/8**
What are Bonus Ranks?
• Languages, Maths C attract 2 bonus ranks
• Senior Engineering Technology attracts 2 bonus rank points at
QUT
• University Study attracts 1 bonus rank point
• Griffith University offers bonus rank points for a range of
subjects.
• Do not change OP but rather the QTAC Selection Rank (QLD
only).Overall Position QTAC Selection Rank
