Understanding Target Grades

What is Target Grade?

• An aspirational but realistic level ofattainment each student should beaiming to achieve

• Intended to provide students, parents and teachers with a meansof measuring progress over time

How are Target Grades set for GCSE?

• In KS4, like other schools in England we use theDfE Attainment 8 Tables to gauge the progressthat students should be making based on theirPrior Attainment

• We look at how students nationally achieve atKS4 compared to their KS2 starting points anduse this information to set Target Grades for ourstudents

How are Target Grades used by students?

• Target grades are used as a basis fordiscussing each student’s progress withthem.

• Discussions with Form Tutor, SubjectTeacher and parents/carers

• Used in a motivational, aspirational way

• Ambitious but realistic

How do we assess students’ progress?

• Informal assessments throughout theacademic year in lessons.

• Classwork and homework.

• Formal assessment fortnights for Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs) during theacademic year:

• w/c 21st October 2019

• w/c 3rd February 2020

What information will the report contain?

• Predicted Grade – our professionaljudgement of how the student will performif they continue working as they are.

• Effort and Behaviour

• Areas of Strength and development foreach subject

• Intervention strategies

How do we report on students’ progress?

• Written reports sent to parents/carers to provide information to support the students’ progress.

• These will be made available to parents/carers on:

w/c 25 November 2019

w/c 9 March 2020

• Staff will help prepare students by teaching new ideas clearly and through regular testing and quizzing on previous knowledge.

• Staff will provide clear and precise feedback on how to improve.

Students must take responsibility for their learning throughout Years 10 and 11, in particular through attending regularly AND engage and focus in

lessons.

Preparation in school leads to success and supports positive well-being

• Start now and establish a routine

• Complete homework to embed learning

• Equipment

• Environment

• Offer encouragement and be the ‘enforcer’

• Continue to check whether revision is happening, whether it is sticking and whether they need a break
