Referendum

A referendum is when everyone has a vote on a single issue.

Page 9: Year 11

The 1975 Referendum

The question asked to the British people would be: "Do you think the UK should stay in the European Community?" The referendum, was the first vote of its kind although people often say we should have a referendum on a particular issue.

For example : People say that we should have had a referendum on whether we went to war in Iraq.

Referendums

• Referendums were held in Scotland and Wales in 1979 and again in 1997 on whether they should have their Parliaments .

• Northern Ireland had referendums in 1973 & 1998 on the Province's constitutional future;

• In Greater London in 1998 there was a referendum about whether London should have an elected Mayor and London Assembly
