Introduction

At Heartlands High School, we believe in enabling and encouraging all students to develop their talents, while at the same time teaching the core subjects and securing excellent literacy and numeracy skills. We provide challenge to those students who arrive already on Level 5 and above, and support for students who need extra help to develop their potential. This is reflected in our curriculum plan, in which students are encouraged to choose pathways suited to them as they move up through the school. Allied with our tutoring system and academic mentoring, this serves to ensure that students are motivated and try their hardest. Assessments and reporting take place four times a year.

In Years 10 and 11, students follow the subjects they have chosen and been guided into for pathways.

This includes:

- eight hours of English; - eight hours of Maths; - ten hours of Science; - four hours of PE.

All students then spend five hours a fortnight studying five options. These subjects include a wide range.

This booklet now consists of a map of what is to be covered in each of the subjects available. To follow this, please use your child’s timetable to ensure that you can follow the subjects and qualifications followed by your child.

Home Learning is an important part of our curriculum at Heartlands High School, and we ask students in KS4 to spend 1.5-2.5 hours trying to complete tasks each day. When you see the Extended Schools timetable, you will see that there are a lot of activities to assist with study. However, KS4 students do also need to become independent learners. You can support them by monitoring timing given to tasks, providing or encouraging them to find a quiet working environment or club, and going through their planners to check the tasks that have been given.

YEAR 10: Music

The AQA GCSE in Music divides the subject into its constituent parts: Composing, Performing, Listening and Analysing.

Students are assessed through:

(Unit 1) A one-hour Listening and Analysing Exam (20%).

(Units 2 and 4)Two fully realised pieces of composed music, fully notated, annotated and evaluated (40%).

(Unit 3) Two recorded performances – one solo and one as part of a group (40%).

Over the course, we will study the elements of music such as rhythm, melody, tonality, harmony, timbre, texture and structure.

We will teach these elements through three strands – Popular Music of the 20th and 21st Century, Western Classical Music and World Music. It is well suited to students who enjoy practical music-making, and playing an instrument to competent level is recommended. However, Music Technology does play a large part, so some interest in Music ICT is preferred. Performance pieces may be submitted using Music Technology, so Year 9 Producers may take the course, although there is an expectation that an instrument will be studied in order to reinforce musical skills and knowledge.

As it is a modular course, we have developed a method of teaching the different disciplines concurrently.
