Year 10 Transition
GCSE English
Chosen course at Soar Valley; Eduqas GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature.
Like in maths, the guidance we have been given is that the new “grade 4” will be roughly equivalent to the previous “grade C”.
The new “grade 9” is supposed to be higher than the current “grade A*”.
Year 10 Transition
GCSE English: what’s new?
Both courses are 100% terminal exam and, unlike maths, there are no different tiers of entry.
There will be two exams for English language and two exams for English literature.
There is no controlled assessment or coursework element to the qualification.
Students will need their own copies of literature texts to allow them to make their own notes and have constant access throughout the course.
Year 10 Transition
GCSE Maths Chosen course at Soar Valley; AQA GCSE
Mathematics, specification 8300 The guidance we have been given is
that the new grade 4 will be roughly equivalent to the previous grade C

Year 10 Transition
At some point in year 10 or year 11 your child may be mentored as a means of additional support to help them progress further. For example - Guidance – 1:1, small groups Support in lessons from other staff Levels of progress are low Evidence of lacking in effort Underachieving – controlled assessments, classwork,
homework, etc Study Support Negativity towards learning – reasons?
Outcome – to be as successful as possible!
5 WAYS PARENTS CAN HELP
1. Make sure they leave the house on time, in correct uniform and with all items required for the day.
2. Discuss the school day and check planners for homework/deadlines.
3. Remove all distractions when homework is being completed and sign planners.
4. Praise/reward when good work is done both in and out of school.
5. Encourage healthy eating (including breakfast), exercise and plenty of sleep – good routines.

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY
Soar Valley prides itself on having one of the best attendance records across the city.
Excellent attendance is crucial in supporting your child with their learning goals and achieving their highest grades.
Equally important is PUNCTUALITY – to registrations and to all lessons.
What should you expect if your child is not in school?
What does the school need if your child is absent?
Lets look a little closer…..
1 school year at 90% attendance =
4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED!!!
Sept July
?
38 school weeks
Absent for 4 weeks
What impact might this have on your life……?
Research suggests that
17 missed school days a year =
1 GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (DfES)
The greater the attendance the greater the attainment.
What could your average earnings look like?
