3. Writing your first paragraph

A hook opening is one which engages the reader immediately. You could start by using two rhetorical questions to get your audience to

think about the topic you intend to speak about. Then outline the topic and give an overall viewpoint. The best presentations outline a problem or issue,

before explaining why you think this issue can be solved.

You might start by quoting a statistic, using a question, using a definition of something that you are talking about.

You could then introduce what exactly you intend to explore in your

presentation*- Outline Problem, Explore Consequences, Suggest Solutions, Explain how solutions would benefit.

Your introduction needs to introduce your topic.

What are you talking about? Why this topic?

What will you discuss in each section*? Can you shock your reader in some way to make them want to listen? Can you include something emotional to make them feel sympathy?

5. Interesting techniques to use in speeches Fill in the table below using ideas for your own speech.

1. Repetition. Saying things more than once. ‘This needs to

change. It can change. It will change’

2. Imagery. Pictures created through words. ‘Picture this: a

nurse working a 15 hour day, saving lives, not having a

break’

3. Emotive Language: language to make the audience

feel emotion. Eg: ‘The struggle of innocent people means

they suffer pain every day’

4. Rhetorical Question: Using questions which don’t require

answers: ‘Are we really living in a country that allows this?’

5. Alliteration: using similar sounds at the start of words

‘War will wreck the world’

6. Metaphors Saying something is another thing. Eg: ‘Poverty is hell’

8. Personification. Giving human qualities to something

that is not. ‘In France, the sun sings daily’

9. Hyperbole. This is exaggeration. ‘It is truly the greatest

place in the world’ or ‘It is obviously a pure hell to live

through’.

11. Imperative. This is a command. ‘Change your ways’ or

‘Act on the information I give to you today, to make a

difference’

12. Simile. When two things are compared using ‘like’ or

‘as’. ‘As evil as the devil’, ‘as innocent as newly born

lambs’.

13. Short sentences. These are used for effect. ‘People are

suffering.’, ‘We all pay the price’. ‘This needs to change’,

14. Quotes/references from people.

‘People are experiencing this every day. In an interview,

footballer, Ronaldo, recently spoke out, ‘the country

needs to pay people fairly’, OR, ‘The Prime Ministster

admitted that ‘we need to increase police numbers’ OR

‘Ariana Grande preached ‘we need one love’.

15. Direct address. The use of ‘you’.

‘You need to pay attention to the words coming out of

my mouth’, ‘only you, the people, can make a difference’

OR ‘you might not believe it, but this statistic is true’.
