Hello Year 1’s! This is the last workbook we will be sending. Well done to those of you who have worked through bits of them. I am

super proud of how resilient you have been!

The boys were a bit chilly this week so spent lots of time cuddled under

blankets.

As you will know now, I am leaving Benjamin Adlard this summer to go and live with Mr. Aslett near Manchester.

It is a sad ending to my nearly 6 years as part of the Benjies’ team. I have taught lots of your brothers and sisters and

you’ve all been amazing. Getting to know you all and spending time with you all and your families has been a real

privilege.

Enjoy your hard-earned Summer and look after yourselves.

I reread one of my own childhood favourites this week. It is full of fun rhyming words with lovely pictures to explore. You can find it on the Libby library app.

Brian Bear’s Picnic!

In the middle of Friary Wood, there lived a large, stripy bear called Brian. He was a happy and generous bear who loved seeing his friends and playing games with them.

One warm, summer morning, Brian decided to invite his bear friends to a picnic. So, he sent an invitation to Curtis, Bertha and Gertie which he wrote in his very best handwriting:

Curtis, Bertha and Gertie were excited and quickly prepared their favourite food to take to the picnic. Curtis baked a scrumptious banana cake, Bertha made some delicious, honey sandwiches and Gertie picked succulent strawberries from her garden. Dressed in their best ‘going-on-a-picnic’ clothes, they set off to Friary Wood.

First, they had to cross a narrow bridge over the river. Just as they reached the other side, a swarm of bees flew towards them. “Duck down!” shouted Bertha but the bees stopped in front of them.

“We need some honey. Can you help us?” asked the largest bee.

Bertha looked at Curtis and Gertie and thought a very long thought. Slowly, very slowly, she unwrapped the honey sandwiches and the bees devoured the honey gratefully. Next, they came to a narrow lane with tall trees on both sides. Swinging through the trees, a troop of monkeys rushed towards them. “Keep out of their way!” yelled Curtis but the monkeys stopped in front of them. “We’ve lost all our bananas, all our banana cakes and banana milkshakes. Can you help us?” asked the leader of the troop. Curtis looked at Bertha and Gertie and thought a very long thought. Slowly, very slowly, he unwrapped the banana cake and the monkeys gobbled it all up gratefully. After that, they reached an old barn which was tumbling down. Standing right in front of them was a family of very skinny, frightened mice. “Stop!” whispered Gertie but the mice didn’t run away, they stood right in front of the bears. “We’re starving, there’s no food left in the barn. Can you help us?” squeaked the biggest mouse.

Gertie looked at Bertha and Curtis and thought a very long thought. Slowly, very slowly, she took out the strawberries and the mice nibbled them all up gratefully. Finally, they reached Friary Wood. “Hello, my friends. Welcome!” boomed Brian. “Spread out your food and we can tuck in.” Curtis, Bertha and Gertie looked at each other. “Um, um, we gave it all away,” said Bertha quietly and the bears told Brian what had happened. “Never mind, I have plenty for everyone,” Brian said cheerfully. So, the four bears sat down to a scrumptious picnic and chatted and laughed as friendly bears do.

Read the story to yourself or read it with a grown up.

Reading for Pleasure time Normally on a Friday in Y5 we have our book talk session (which I am really missing) Choose to do one or more of these activities:

• Use GetEpic, the internet or books you have at home to research plants and life cycles. The challenge is to find 5 facts that you would have added to the ‘Did You Know’ book

• Sit and enjoy reading a book. Any book. Fiction, non-fiction , poetry, comic. This could even be a book you are reading on a kindle or on GetEpic.

• Write a book review to send to me by email or on Google Classroom to recommend a book you have enjoyed.

• Listen to the next chapter of Varjak Paw

Read each of our tricky words out loud.

Try writing each one into a sentence.

I called my cat for his breakfast.

Looking after your mind is just as important as looking after your body. When think about keeping our mind happy and healthy we call it our ‘mental health’

Looking after your mental health is not always easy. Especially when things are happening in the world that might be worrying you! Here are some suggestions to keep your mind happy and

healthy. You can watch this video for more information https://youtu.be/0k_R7R1gIdA

Try some hand breathing.

Stretch your fingers on one hand out. Trace your pointer finger up and down the fingers on this hand as you breathe slowly in and out.

https://youtu.be/DSgOW879jjA

This is a good technique if you are feeling anxious.

Give yourself a butterfly hug

• Cross both arms over your chest and place each hand on your shoulder.

• Gently begin tapping each hand one at a time on your arms. Tap for 10 counts

• Pause and take a deep breath.

• Keep going until you feel more relaxed.

5-4-3-2-1

Write down or think about:

5 things you can see

4 things you can touch

3 things you can hear

2 things you can smell

1 thing you can taste

Ocean breathing.

Transport yourself to the beach. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Slowly breathe in through your nose, and then out through your pursed lips (as if you are blowing through a straw). The slow breathing sounds like ocean waves, gently crashing on shore.

Peace Out

Try some guided relaxation with the Cosmic Kids Peace Out

videos.

This is one of Mrs. Aslett’s favourites.

Have a brain break

Sing a song, go for a walk, do a silly dance. Get moving!

Here are some good ideas:

https://youtu.be/9nKq4jm4LD8

https://youtu.be/dNL6RwymoNg

Give it a squeeze!

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Hold each squeeze for about 5 seconds.

• Curl your toes tight like you are picking up a pencil with your feet.

• Tense your legs by pretending like you are standing on your tippy-toes, trying to look over a fence.

• Suck in your stomach as if you are trying to slide through a narrow opening.

• Make fists with your hands and pretend like you are trying to squeeze all of the juice out of an orange.

• Pretend like a bug landed on your nose, and you’re trying to get it off without using your hands. Try to scrunch your face and move your jaw to make it fly away!

Concentrate on how different it feels to tense and then relax your muscles.

Make a pizza

Sorry Mrs. Noble not a real one!

Kids’ Youtube channel.

Talk, talk talk!

If you are worried, sad, angry or anxious then speaking to an

adult is important and will help. They can work through some of

these activities with you.

These activities can help adults too!
