What do you think How does
that make you feel
We will be working hard this year to develop the childrenrsquos independence skills Simple ways you could help are Waving your child a calm and cheery goodbye in the line each morning and not following them to the classroom door Giving your child the responsibility to hand in any letters Showing your child where their clothes are named so they know where to look for the labels Encouraging your child to open their book bag every day after school show you any letters and reply slips and replace communication diaries and reading books in their book bags themselves Encourage your child to take responsibility to let you know if any PE kit is beginning to get too small
Please continue to listen to your child read as often as possible encouraging them not only to read the school books but also to choose a range of books from home or the library Help them to sound out each phoneme (sound) and not each letter eg b oo t We focus strongly on teaching the children to understand what they have read so do ask them questions about their books Each week we will put a sticker in communication diaries which let you know what your childrsquos particular focus is for reading Please support this focus in any way you can Please donrsquot forget to practise the spellings that will come home later this half term and will support both reading and writing Remember that spelling like handwriting is important but not as important as WHAT your child writes Practical Maths through board games is a good way of practising counting on and back as well as learning the valuable skill of turn taking Weighing measuring and handling money can also help to show the children the real-life applications of what we learn in Maths
Autumn 1st half Term lsquoTell us a Storyrsquo
Welcome to our information page We hope you find it
interesting and informative Our main aim for this half term will
be settling the children introducing the routines of Year One
and having lots of fun Our first topic will be lsquoTell us a Storyrsquo
and our lessons will be based around the theme of traditional
tales In English we will use the features of captions to add
detail to illustrations from the Gingerbread Man We will read
stories by Shirley Hughes as well as the traditional tale lsquoLittle
Red Riding Hoodrsquo helping us compare characters settings and
events as well as making story maps and writing the stories
using our own words In Maths we will learn to read and write
numbers to 20 and beyond putting them in order and we will
start to use the vocabulary related to addition and subtraction
We will also use symbols to record simple sums We will name
and describe 2d and 3d shapes and will measure weigh and
compare objects using non-standard measures Linking to
English we will record information in lists and tables and
answer questions about the results
In Science we will develop our understanding of the seasons
particularly focusing on the change from summer into autumn
making detailed observations of the changes in our
environment In geography we will consider the location and
features of our school making our own maps thinking about
the concept of a birdrsquos eye view
We will link our art closely with RE when we will learn about
the Hindu celebration of Diwali We will design our own rangoli
patterns and make diva lamps We will also make sketches of
nature and leaf prints In Games Gym and Dance we will learn
basic ball skills and explore different ways of travelling and
moving both on the fieldplayground and in the hall The focus
of PHSCE will be ourselves our families and what makes us
special including how we grow and change In ICT we will be
learning to log on save and print and will develop basic
keyboard skills through different software packages
A fun packed half term and brilliant start to the year
As we go through the year please could you check that name labels havent fallen off or
faded in the wash We love the children to bring in things from
home related to our topic but please remember to name everything
Diary Dates Please look on the school website for all
of the diary dates for the year
