Stewardship Campaign has kicked off!

The Stewardship Campaign for the 2015 budget has kicked off. The theme this year is “Treasure.” Focusing on Matthew 6:21, “Where you treasure is, there your heart will be also.” For 4 weeks, Pastor Zach will be preaching on different parts of stewardship from Jesus’ well-known Sermon on the Mount.

During the campaign, we will have some community gatherings. These gatherings serve multiple purposes. First, it’s a chance for us to gather as a community in fellowship, and maybe you’ll get to know a few people better than you do now. Also, we will share our financial status at this point in our year, and our goals for 2015. There will also be some time for you to get to know Pastor Zach better. The Stewardship and Finance Committee realized we didn’t have these types of gatherings when he first got here, so we are going to catch up! Refreshments will of course be a part of each gathering. You can sign up at church for one of these gatherings, or call the church office to let us know you are coming.

S T E W A R D S H I P & F I N A N C E

This week our Stewardship campaign kicks off and we begin to look forward to 2015. Recently our church has struggled to fully fund our budget. Our committee recognizes that we have many generous givers in our congregation. It is obvious that many members have discovered the joy of giving and are committed to the mission of our church. As we discussed our current financial position, the Stewardship team acknowledged our responsibility to help each member discover this joy. Our role is to help each member in their effort to become a tither. Tithing is the act of giving 10% of your income to support the church.

It is not necessary for a person to instantly become a tither. The best way to start is to make the decision to move toward tithing. That move may start with you increasing your pledge by 10% and continue with a commitment to give 5% of your income during the following year.

God asks that we give in response to the blessings that we have received. Now is the time for each of us to examine what God has done for us and help Him bring light into the world. What can you do to show your commitment to God’s work? Thank you for all that you do for our church.

Maurice Mashek | Chair, Stewardship and Finance

Can I have a show of hands? GOOD!

You are needed by the trustees on 11-8-14 from 8am to noon. Hopefully we will be done before noon. We have 2 projects to get accomplished. First one is removing the old carpet in the AA meeting room downstairs. To save money on the new carpet, we decided to remove the old carpet ourselves. Basically the trustees are looking for some muscle that can rip out the old. If you need to vent frustration, this is a good way to do it. May need to do some scrapping depending on how much glue was used originally. The second project is painting the narthex and hallway. I know more painting. Well you don’t have to be a painter to help out. I am looking for people that can clean the walls the week before on their own schedule. Also a person or two to work on the messed up drywall (sanding required). Then several people can get to the taping off the walls. Then on that Saturday morning, we lay the plastic and paint. I will also need someone to show up early for church the next day and put the hangers back. The more hands that are involved the less work each person does. Please contact me, Arnold Hamel cell 402-680-6999 for coordination and questions.

Thank you Trustees

Healthy BreathingBreathing is an essential function of life, but it is so much more than that. How you breath B@M @ƤDBS XNTQ RSQDMFSGenergy, sleep and even your stress level. Correct breathing improves the intake of oxygen and helps to clear your lungs of toxins and carbon dioxide. According to the University of Missouri’s Center of Aging Studies, controlled breathing is especially important for older adults because they can lose up to 20 percent of their blood oxygen levels through the natural course of aging.

Generally we shallow breath only using the upper lobes of the lungs. This is our normal breathing in which only our chest rises and falls. We need to take a few breaks throughout each day to do correct breathing which engages our lower lobes of our lungs. This is where we take the breath all the way to our stomach.

DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING

Practice this breathing exercise lying down on your back. Place one hand over your naval and your other hand above it on your stomach. Now concentrate breathing from your diaphragm. The hand over your naval should rise before the hand above it on the inhale. Again inhale and exhale slowly for 3-5 minutes.

YOUTH EVENTSHere we sit on the cusp of Thanksgiving. A time to say thank you for what God (and this congregation) has provided. How better to show our thanks, than to show HPUMC what blessings you have given to the youth. Here are this years events.

» An awesome over-nighter highlighted with laser tag. It was a great lesson, some wonderful food and a nice sleepover. All had a great time.

» Bags for Youth Emergency Services (YES). An afternoon was spent sorting and preparing the bags for delivery. All total, 200 bags were !lled for our friends at YES. The youth had a ball.

» Even though the United Methodist Ministries cancelled the Martin Luther King, Jr. “Day On, not Day O"” event, our youth gathered and served all day at the Open Door Mission where they were tasked with sorting though PALLETS of donations from Christmas to create organization from chaos. There were a bunch of tired and sweaty youth after that one.

» An overnighter at First United Methodist where 50+ kids gathered to help make #eece blankets for the homeless. They had a great lesson and actually got some sleep. Well, most of them.

» A Sunday afternoon at Claire Memorial UMC tie-dying shirts with the other youth groups. We were even blessed with NOT having dye all over the #oor.

» A soup luncheon fundraiser after church. Sorry the potato soup ran out so soon, we’ll make more.

» Segue classes every Wednesday night through the Spring. Youth followed Lecto Divna learning about how to become disciples in Jesus Christ by following !rst Mark in detail and then Hebrews.

» Spring Craft Fair kitchen. Good food, good times, great fundraiser.

» Helping with games at the Block Party. The youth not only play games, they help make them a success every year at the block party.

» An afternoon of yard clean-up for Eastern Nebraska O$ce on Aging (ENOA).

» There’s nothing like being a kid if you don’t go to Summer Camp at Camp Fontanelle. Many of the Individual youth went North for a week of camping. From Mud Frogs to singing on Sunday at Fremont’s First UMC summer camps were a huge kid favorite.

» Helping to make Hanscom Park’s VBS the best in the city, and the only one with an enchanted forest.

» A well deserved trip to Adventureland to celebrate another successful year. This also o$cially kicks o" the start of fundraising for next summer’s mission trip to Lake Traverse.

» Omaha’s Paint-a-thon o"ered the youth 2 hot Saturday’s to get dirty, painted and do some good. What more could they ask for?

» The fall craft fair kitchen duty added fried !sh to the menu and the youth opened a table selling items. All combined, it was very successful.

» An emergency harvest day at the Community Farm in Spring!eld the day after Fall’s !rst freeze.

» The Fall BBQ at the corn maze and an additional Saturday working gave the youth an opportunity to help Camp Fontanelle with another wonderful season of spreading the word of God.

» Fall Segue’s material was from the book “Scary, Gross & Weird Stories of the Bible.” The series pushed the Youth’s boundaries and so popular the group grew throughout the series.

These are just the highlights of the youth program we were able to o"er through your generous support. There are many more things coming up. Some fun fundraisers and more opportunities to learn about and grow in their faith. Watch in the coming weeks for these awesome events.

» A dinner with the youth from the Tri-Faith initiative. A interesting merger of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Should be an eye-opening evening.

» An interfaith worship service at 1st Christian Church.

» Hosting a fancy dinner before Thanksgiving to celebrate the pledging of our tithes.

» Babysitting after church before Christmas so parents can go shopping or relax for an afternoon.

» An elegant Tea Party in the HPUMC lounge.

» Another lock-in, but this time at St. Paul’s UMC in Papillion.

» A soup luncheon fundraiser after church.

» Here we are all the way back around to MLK’s “Day On, not Day O"” day of service.

Again, thank you to everyone in the church for making this possible. Only through our combined e"orts can we raise the youth to honor God. To become strong disciples in Jesus Christ. To be well rounded, God fearing, productive members of society. God bless you all!
