• Bali is a small island with an ancientand deeply traditional culture, wherevillage law is predominant. The fishingvillage of Pemuteran set up its ownPecalang Laut, or Sea Guardians, toenforce village laws preserving coralreefs and fisheries resources fromdestructive over-exploitation. On theirown they set up a village-run marineprotected area. The fisheries were incollapse at the time the project started.

• A few weeks later the corals arestarting to grow around the CoralGoddess, and a big school ofsnappers swarm around her.Corals are grown using Biorock®Technology to greatly increasecoral settlement, growth, survival,and resistance to severeenvironmental stress, includinghigh temperature.

When we began the project this area wasnearly barren of corals and fishes, due to theimpacts of global warming and destructivefishing practices by outsiders and locals.
