FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE
Harmony Day
We are looking forward to celebrating the diverse cultures and
backgrounds of the students in our school community on Friday through a
variety of great activities. Students have been busy working on plans /
proposed projects to make our school an even more enjoyable place.
Parents we look forward to joining us for afternoon tea and then at our assembly. Don’t forget to wear
something orange if you have it.
Working Bee
It would be great to see as many people as possible on Saturday at our working bee on
the school grounds. I know people have busy lives, but if you could spare ½ hour or
more it would be greatly appreciated. We have some plans to rejuvenate some of our
garden areas - the recent rain has been beneficial to both our plants and gardens, but also
the weeds. Bring along gloves, spades, shovels, wheelie carts, etc. Hope to see you from 8am
onwards.
Roll Check / Attendance
Recently, the Home School Liaison Officer visited our school and completed a roll
check. Just some feedback for all our families - if you are away from school, please
provide either a written or verbal notification. Reasons such as shopping or birthdays are
deemed unjustified, so please take this into consideration. I have also noted quite a few
students arriving regularly late at school – please try and be at school on time & in line by 9am.
If you are intending on travelling overseas for a holiday for an extended period of time please come to
the office to complete the necessary paperwork to apply for an exemption to school.

Surf Awareness Presentation
Next Monday, students K-6 will be participating in Surf Awareness lessons presented by Royal Life
Saving Society of NSW. This is a great opportunity for students to be made aware of vital skills and
aware of the dangers of the surf.
High School Expression of Interest Forms
Just a reminder to Year 6 parents that High School Expression of Interest forms are due to school by
Friday 21st March. These need to be returned even if your child will not be attending a NSW Public

Crunch ‘n’ Sip
In 2014, Yates Avenue Public School has continued the Crunch ‘n’ Sip Programme. This is
where the children bring a small portion of fresh fruit or vegetables to eat during the
morning session. Please encourage your child to participate in Crunch ‘n’ Sip each day.
Wholesome Wednesday
We are also continuing to promote “Wholesome Wednesdays”, where children bring in a healthy lunch
box and receive two tokens if they have healthy food in their lunchbox and limited packaged food to
eat on Wednesdays.

This Friday, 21st March, we will celebrate Harmony Day at Yates Avenue Public School.
It is a day to celebrate diversity and share the goal of living and working together in harmony,
peace, and understanding. We will embrace the Harmony Day message that “Everyone
Belongs”, be proud to be Australian and be proud to belong to our Yates Avenue School
community.
The day will commence for the students with “Story Telling on the Lawn” led by 6H who will be
reading stories in small groups that highlight this year’s theme - “Together we can”.
At 1:40pm, parents and families are invited to join us for a picnic afternoon tea on the lawn.
The Canteen will be open to purchase tea, coffee and cake.
This will be followed by our Harmony Day Assembly which will commence at 2:00pm under the
3-6 COLA. The students will be singing a selection of songs to celebrate the day and the
winner of the Harmony Day Class Project will be announced.
As orange is the official colour of Harmony Day, the students may wear mufti for the day and
come dressed in something orange.
We look forward to celebrating Harmony Day with you,
Harmony Day Co-ordinators~ Mrs. Lawson, Mrs. Dowell and Miss Luk

In the lead up to Harmony Day, the Preschool children
have been talking about the Harmony Day message and
what it means to us. The message that “Everyone
Belongs” fits beautifully with the Early Years Learning
Framework - Belonging, Being, Becoming. We are all
unique and proud to be Australian.
The Dolphins and Turtles have contributed their ideas to our
Harmony Day Project and have come up with some excellent
suggestions for our chosen space. We look forward to seeing all
the class projects on Friday.
We also look forward to celebrating Harmony Day this Friday and enjoying
“Storytelling on the Lawn” with Year 6, having a picnic lunch with our
families and joining the Harmony Day Assembly.
Together we can!

P. & C. NEWS
A huge thank you to all students who participated in the 5 cent fundraiser last week, and to all of the
parents who generously emptied their pockets of 5 cent coins.
We raised $760 towards the purchase of iPads which will be used in the new computer hub for
the kids.
The students had a great time seeing who could make the longest snail trail of coins.
The class 2L were outright winners with over 50m of coins. Each child was awarded a
prize and a basket of prizes was awarded to the second-placed class which was 3/4B.
A reminder that this Saturday is the working bee at the school. After the success of
last year, we are looking to once again spruce up the gardens a bit to make the school
look lovely. If you can spare just an hour or two, come to help out. We will provide
gardening equipment and gloves, as well as a free lunch for all those who help.
The kids can also help out! Our small school is only given someone to assist in the grounds
two days per week. With the size of our grounds, sometimes he just needs a hand to make our kids’
environment beautiful.
Did you know that the P&C subsidises the cost of providing Mathletics for your child?
Contributions can still be paid at the Office. It only costs $15 per child and is a great
tool to help kids learn at home.
