Clean up Day at Sunny Point a Great Success A big thank you goes out to all those wonderful volunteers who helped with the clean up at Sunny Point on a bright and sunny day in May. Thanks to Charlotte Wytias and Josephine Lynch for making the white house sparkle; they washed all the windows, dusted and mopped the floors; Byron Long, Dick Murphy, and Fred Brockway cleaned up the beach; Mark Warren and Tom Murrin cut the grass; Howard LeVant pulled weeds and took tons of photos of all of our hard work; Douglas and Arianne Tepper spruced up the gardens surrounding both the white house and red barn; and Sam Castner prepared Sunny Point for the arrival of our volunteers; installed the dock, cleaned out the scrubs along the side of the red barn and barn.....and on and on and on. To all the volunteers who donated their time and talent to clean up Sunny Point - thank you again. You are the best!

(Ellen Bradshaw continued) the everyday intensity of the simple passing of moments against that in-your-face real-ity that is New York City." Life in the Finger Lakes magazine, in a Winter 2008 feature about Ellen, said this: Her paintings, whether coun-try or city scenes, exploit the play of light and evoke a sense of solitude. “I think it’s funny that after living in the city for as long as I have, I still tend to show more of the

solitude…When I do include people, it’s often a lone figure.” Ellen's landscape paintings depict the beautiful Finger Lakes Region in upstate Western New York, which she visits annually. Her paintings in “Local Life” were exhibited in 2008 at The Pleiades Gallery of Contemporary Art in New York’s Chelsea art market district as "Heading Home, Keuka Lake" .

(Brett Steeves continued) In 2000, he revived the application of murals on fiberglass screen, first used in the more prominent front porches of old Baltimore in 1907. Using the newer technique of airbrushing, he was able to give the screen the look of etched glass. Currently Brett is experimenting with horizons new to him in his canvas work. Some of what will appear in his showing will be the result of that experimentation. Brett recently gave a presentation and airbrush demo to a gathering of the Penn Yan Art Guild. He also filled us in on some of the exciting things happening in Ham-mondsport, including open studio spaces and renovation of the opera house there. Brett has been the key organizer for Pallets of Keuka Lake, exhibited at businesses all around Keuka. A huge advocate for the arts, Brett Steeves is involved in help-ing to make the Keuka Lake area an Arts Destination.

Susan Webb Tregay recently won a prize in the prestigious Watercolor USA Exhibition at the Springfield Museum, Springfield, MO, for her painting "Risk Being Sorry." Her painting is a great metaphor for what we will be doing in her workshop. "Master Disaster, 5 New Strategies for Stupendous Paintings" will teach you techniques that will allow you to take risks. And it will help you carefully choose which risks you may want to take. Above all, learn to take risks without changing your personal style--just make it better. Much better. Don't have a personal style? We will address that very com-mon problem too. Don't risk missing this workshop. For Susan’s complete resume and paintings see her web sites www.tregay.com and www.susanwebbtregay.com.

Molly Pearce is our featured docent this month. Molly comes to YCAC with a cheerful attitude and a friendly smile. Molly was born in Penn Yan and yet after living here until 13 journeyed on to a multitude of places. She attended college at Miami University in Ohio and has lived in many places and worn many hats. She has re-sided in the Virgin Islands, Nashville and Philadelphia and worked as a dental hygentist, a realtor, a bartender and more! Molly has 3 daugh-ters who reside in Philadelphia, Santa Fe & Dallas. They have re-warded her with 4 granddaughters and 3 grandsons. After the death of her father about 15 years ago, Molly came back to the area and now lives in Branchport. She has multiple hobbies including cooking, gar-dening, biking, sailing, hiking, music and reading. Molly enjoys her time at the Art Center, especially comroderie with other volunteers and member associated with YCAC. She also love s conversing with the great diversity of guests who visit the gallery!

From the President: It is a pleasure to see Yates County actively pursu-ing the summer months of sunshine and opportuni-ties for fun especially in the Arts. How fortunate we are in this area to have so many supporters of art activities and as we strive to integrate the arts into the fabric of everyday life, summer becomes the per-fect venue for offering art classes for people of all ages, hosting community and cultural events both at the gallery and at Sunny Point, providing gallery space for artists to sell their work, helping emerging artists with professional opportunities; managing our strong volunteer program; assisting students launch art careers via internships, and providing exhibition opportunities. Art Auction The best architects open windows of potential, sig-naling how the future might look and so we are ex-cited about the final plans from Wolfe Architecture that are approved by the Board and ready to begin. YCAC believes Rob Wolfe has helped us to rethink how a cultural building can define and engage a community. This architect has grasped that the arts can play a dynamic role in a village like Penn Yan and the new building will be an integral part as the community carves out a newer identity. Dave Ness is lining up the contractors and soon as you take a summer stroll down Main Street you will see activity at the Maxwell building. Watch that roof and side wall; they are the hot spots this summer. Artists are deeply involved in their art, whether it is painting, sculpting, dancing, singing, writing and/or performing music, or the many variations on those themes, they too need a place to work, to create, to spend time with their art and we think this summer the new Artist in Residence program at Sunny Point will thrill Mary Arthur who lives in Annapolis, Mary-land. Mary has an impressive portfolio, a back-ground in Art History and she has received numer-ous awards and fellowships in the visual arts and education. We are pleased that during her stay at Sunny Point she will also be holding a workshop designed to help any artist interested in portrait drawing. If you have never been to a YCAC exhibit plan on attending “Local Life” featuring the art of Ellen Brad-shaw & Brett "Somers" Steeves as well as local art-ists and their interpretation of the Finger Lakes. Looking at the talent of local artists, sharing a glass of local wine and chatting with local neighbors at the July 22nd Opening Reception is a good choice for an early Friday night event.

During the YCAC Studio Tour, local artists open their studios to everyone in the area. Stop by and see painters, potters, jewelry makers and sculptors at work. You can visit the artists at your own pace, stopping at many of our eateries and enjoy a leisurely day basking in the beauty of the area while learning about the creative process of our many artistic neighbors. July 6, YCAC will serve refreshments at Music on the Court House Lawn. Sundays at Sunny Point offers an ideal family picnic spot with art, music, wine or beer tastings and a chance to enjoy the lake once a month. This is just a taste of all the Art Summer Pro-grams and events YCAC is doing so read on be-cause I think you will see summer just got more fun. Sandy Murrin, President YCACn

Docent Luncheon (Picture Page One)

YCAC’s annual docent appreciation luncheon was held on June 15th and well attended and enjoyed by about 20 of our volunteers. It was a great chance for us to socialize with each other as well as find answers to any concerns we had such as “what to do if?” We also discussed the fun part of being a docent at YCAC - spending time in an at-mosphere of beautiful artwork, talking to guests to our area as well and the many local patrons. Steve Owens, of the Classic Café in Dundee, fed us a tasty lunch and, needless to say, none left hungry! After lunch, Kris, our executive director, took those interested on a tour of our future home on Main Street. We are anxious for the move! Volunteering at YCAC can be rewarding and fun experience. We are always on the look out for new volunteers, not only for docenting but all kinds of help. Please contact Joan Belles if you are inter-ested. 607-2438841 or [email protected]

YCAC Board Approves Final Plans for New Gallery The Yates County Arts Center Board of Directors approved architectural plans for the new Main Street Gallery at their June meeting. The decision ends months of discussions and plan revisions aimed at creating attractive, workable and cost effective gallery, classroom and office space in YCAC’s future home. Now that plans are finalized, the Facilities Committee is soliciting bids from local contractors for the work and is beginning to work with local zoning and historic preservation officials on gaining the necessary permits. Much of the initial building rehabilitation, dealing with internal systems like heat-ing and plumbing, may not make a visible difference but once the major structural work gets underway there will be no question that YCAC is on the move! The first phase of construction will consist of the installation of key systems and making changes to the building’s shell to address structural issues and accessibility. Gallery space will be finished first, with upstairs classroom and meeting space phased in as funds become available. YCAC is waiting to hear if grant funds will be awarded allowing the installation of an elevator, providing additional access to the second floor, in the initial phase of construction. If the grant is not awarded this year, space dedicated to the elevator will be set aside until funds for that particular part of the plan become available. We are extremely grateful to those individuals and businesses who have already so generously provided sup-port for this exciting project. THANK YOU to donors as of 6/23/11:

YCAC Art Instructor at St. Michael’s

Once a week during the school year, YCAC instructor Robin Secrest has spent the day teaching art to the students at St. Michael's School, paid for by funding received through the Rochester Area Community Foundation's Spring Hill Grant.

These students had very limited exposure to the materials and creative approaches used in art class prior to the program initiated by YCAC. The handling of materials is a skill being lost in our current culture as children spend more time with electronic devices, representations rather than real experiences.

College professors have commented on incoming students lack of skills in manipulating materials, a skill necessary for an engineer to develop an idea based on the function of material, or the scientist to explore the interaction of materials in the laboratory.

Young people need to learn how to use tools and materials as a life preparation skill. Art class helps develop these skills.

Problem solving is an intellectual skill that is enriched by studying art. Students have options in developing their projects, making unique decisions within the framework of the project. And art is fun.

Mary Rickman Scholarship

Engle Heggie memorialized the late Mary Rickman, a beloved art teacher, in a ceremony awarding four $1000 scholarships in her name, supported mainly by her family.
