Yarrabah News V2 Issue 10 THURSDAY 31 May 2018 Volunteers clean up beach If you were just under a metre and a half (five feet) tall and of small to average build, you could quite possibly weigh as much as the rubbish collected from a 250 metre stretch of Yarrabah beach front last Saturday. A team of about 20 volunteers collected about 50 kilograms of rubbish at the first of a series of Yarrabah Social Reinvestment Project clean ups for 2018. Material collected included aluminium cans, broken glass, lolly wrappers, food wrappers, straws, shoes and clothing items that have been blown onto the beach, found trapped in the rock walls, or leſt behind. Gunggandji-Mandingalbay Yidinji Peoples Prescribed Body Corporate Aboriginal Corporation Executive Officer Helen Tait said the bags of rubbish were weighed and a cross section of rubbish was sorted and counted. “Many items have been recycled and the waste collected was transferred to the Cairns Regional Council Gordonvale Transfer Station,” she said. Free T-shirt A sausage sizzle for their efforts was well-received and those who took part have registered for their free Project T-Shirt. “The free project t-shirt, which will be available in November, is only offered to those who participate in at least two of the four clean up events,” Ms Tait said. “We’d like to acknowledge and thank everyone who volunteered their Saturday morning to assist us with this first event. “ More pics next page...!

Volunteers clean up beach

If you were just under a metre and a half (five feet) tall and of small to average build, you could quite possibly weigh as much as the rubbish collected from a 250 metre stretch of Yarrabah beach front last Saturday.

A team of about 20 volunteers collected about 50 kilograms of rubbish at the first of a series of Yarrabah Social Reinvestment Project clean ups for 2018.

Material collected included aluminium cans, broken glass, lolly wrappers, food wrappers, straws, shoes and clothing items that have been blown onto the beach, found trapped in the rock walls, or left behind.

Corporate Aboriginal Corporation Executive Officer Helen Tait said the bags of rubbish were weighed and a cross section of rubbish was sorted and counted.

“Many items have been recycled and the waste collected was transferred to the Cairns Regional Council Gordonvale Transfer Station,” she said.

From page 1...“We would also like to

acknowledge Faith Richards for assisting Matt Wheldon from Tangaroa with the data collection and learning how to input the data in the portable data collection device,” Ms Tait said.

Ms Tait said the device was to assist them with working out what types of waste they had collected.

“That helps us to figure out how we can work with the community to target and reduce those items into the future,” she said.

“We would love the community to join us at the next event which will be on Saturday 16 June from 9am to 11:30am on the beach below the Esplanade at Bishop Malcolm Park.

“More hands definitely lighten the load and will also mean we can collect even more waste, preventing it from ending up in the ocean and harming turtles, dugong and other marine and bird life.”

Families celebrate local ambo achievements“Congratulations to two of our finest: Yarrabah Officer in Charge Claine Underwood and Wynnum Advanced Care Paramedic Neil Hobbs,” the Queensland Ambulance Service has posted on their Facebook page.

The Governor of Queensland His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey presented Claine and Neil with the prestigious Ambulance Service Medal at a ceremony at Government House [earlier this month].

The ASM recognises distinguished service by the men and women of Australia’s Ambulance services.

Claine, who commenced his operational career with the QAS in 1995, was acknowledged for significant

service to the QAS, in supervisory and managerial roles within operations and education, including as an Area Manager, and for his leadership in the establishment and development of the QAS Indigenous Paramedic Program.

Neil, who has more than 40 years of service with the QAS as a frontline officer, was recognised for significant service to the QAS as a paramedic in regional

Queensland and in Brisbane, and as a mentor to new operational staff including graduates.

The QAS is very proud of both officers.

Thank you for going above and beyond to deliver outstanding service to the QAS and the Queensland community.Source: QAS on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/qldambulanceservice

NDIS roll-out priority for working groupDisability services, including those provided by PHAMS, the State Government and other agencies, are to be replaced with a ‘one stop’ funding shop for all supports and services under the new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), due to be rolled out from Sunday 1 July.

A recent Yarning Circle, hosted by Joanne Houghton and the Thrive team in Yarrabah, hoped to assist people with information about how they can access disability services after July 1, with presentations from National Disability Insurance Agency representative Minnie Saxena and Synapse’s Jodi Sampson (pictured right).

Jodi took a lead role facilitating the yarning circle with Minnie and Joanne adding to the discussion where needed.

Topics covered included what is and is not covered by NDIS, who can help, continuity of support for people with mental health concerns and training possibilities for potential providers.

The meeting was attended by more than 35 people and the Yarrabah NDIS Working Group, which was formed last year, will meet again soon to table community concerns and issues, and encourage local initiatives and solutions.

The Working Group wants to encourage local people to set up their own businesses and become registered providers.

The meeting asked that this type of information session be ongoing and wanted to encourage community members to find out what the NDIS means for them. For information and support about registering as an NDIS provider contact Connections Mentor Coordinator Isaac Mundraby.
