President’s Message
Although it has been 2 weeks since our last Bulletin, Rotary activities are still happening.
On the 10 September, rather than having a normal Club meeting, we enjoyed a very
pleasant fellowship evening at the Amici restaurant in Camberwell. Although service
activities are fundamental to Rotary, having fun and enjoying our friendships formed
within the Rotary family is an important aspect of any Rotary Club.
Rotary has a series of monthly Rotary themes. The theme for September is Youth Service.
Yarra Bend Rotary supports a number of youth service activities, including the National
Youth Science Forum (NYSF) to be held in Canberra in January 2015. The Forum provides
an opportunity for students entering Year 12 to explore prospective vocation, study and
employment options within science, engineering and technology disciplines. We are
pleased that one of our nominated candidates, Koyla Haisken-Denew from Kew High
School was successful. Congratulations Koyla!
The Club has been developing a mentoring capability to assist / guide older youth in
establishing their careers. At next week’s Club meeting we will be commencing a
mentoring program with the Swinburne Rotaract Club whereby Rotaract mentees are
matched with Rotarians from Yarra Bend Rotary. We look forward to supporting our
fellow Rotaractors through this program.
I am somewhat disappointed that the mighty Bombers have not been able to make it
through to the AFL Grand Final. However, as a second best alternative, it would be good if
a local team from our cluster could win the Grand Final……… (continued)

With that in mind, I say “Go Hawks!”, but in the spirit of Rotary, may the best team win.
Remember spread the word to Light Up Rotary. Regards Tony.
On This Day
Monday September 17 2001: (13 years ago).
Australian Citizenship Day First Celebrated
Australian Citizenship Day was first celebrated in Australia on 17 September 2001. The date was chosen as 17 September was the day that
the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 was renamed, in 1973, to the Australian Citizenship Act 1948.
Australian Citizenship Day is an opportunity for Australians to take pride in their citizenship and consider what it means to be Australian.
Australians are encouraged to reflect on the history and changes that have shaped the nation, and on the individuals' roles in shaping the
country's future. This is a time to uphold Australia's values of democracy and the concept of equality and a fair go, as well as equality and
respect for each other.
Amici Trattoria – Fellowship Evening
Thanks to Anne and Ed Brown who arranged our fellowship evening on 10 September at Amici Trattoria in Burke Road Camberwell. We
had 25 attendees and a great night was had by all. The food was up to Amici’s usual high standard and their support waiving corkage and
agreeing a fixed price menu was appreciated by all.

Club Forum – 17 September 2014
Isabel Armer outlined her idea that the Club purchases coffee beans from “Wild Timor” a group of ex-serviceman who are facilitating “fair
trade” export of Timorese coffee picked by locals from the abundant wild coffee plant in Timor Leste. The concept was originally to sell
the beans through the Rotary network in much the same way that Christmas Cakes and Puddings are sold. There is also the opportunity to
supply to local cafes or look at a broader commercial operation. The concept is being examined by a small committee led by Bob Lambert
who will prepare a business case or similar for consideration by the board.
Points raised by members in discussion of this idea included:
The need to understand what each part of the value chain delivers to Timorese communities. i.e. what money per kilogram of
product is paid to local pickers, sorters, hullers etc, the quantum of shipping and related costs, what margin is taken by Wild
Coffee etc.
Can the proceeds arising from such a venture be channeled into a worthwhile project on the ground in Timor Leste?
The commercial arrangements need to be tied down i.e. what price is paid by YBR, how it is marketed and distributed,
recommended retail price etc.
How to avoid competing with other Rotary Clubs already selling coffee.
Is the eventual sum of money raised for Timorese communities commensurate with the effort involved?
Can we act as broker rather than just selling to Rotary and therefore leverage Rotarians business skills?
Should all members purchase five packets and on-sell as an exercise in establishing the existence of a market?
Does our charter allow us to participate in something that delivers commercial gain to others who are not registered as “not for
profit” organisations?
What audit or due diligence is required to understand the beneficiaries across the value chain?
Thought of the week (Matt Pollard) “True wisdom comes to each of us when we realise how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us.” Socrates
It is time to get our accommodation sorted. Already Wrest Point accommodation is fully booked. Members are asked to
advise Matt Pollard of their intention to attend District Conference in Hobart next year.

Directors Reports
President Tony mentioned that a Cluster meeting was due to be held on 18 September and that District Grants Seminar will be
attended on 22 September
Bob advised that work at Kew High School was targeting two projects to build paths and protect gardens from compaction. The
smaller of these would be tackled at a working bee starting at 9am on Tuesday 30 September. Advise Bob (0425 748 008) if you
can assist please.
Victoria Police are running a security seminar in Boroondara on 15 October. Agreed that this would not be a “meeting” as was
the case last year. President Tony to consider the question of representative attendance at the seminar.
Our exchange student Dorianne visited Harrietville last weekend.
Justin stressed the importance of all members attending the mentoring kick-off meeting with Swinburne Rotaract, even those
who are not directly involved as mentors.
Anne reported that two RYLA positions would be offered to Swinburne Rotaract.
