“In the absence ofall bacteria, these mice

Tablets to outsell netbooks in US by 2012SAN FRANCISCO, 19 June—Tablets including Apple’s iPad are expected to

outsell netbooks in the United States by 2012, research firm Forresterpredicted in a report released on Thursday.

By 2014, more US consumers will use tablets than use netbooks, or mini-notebooks, Forrester said in the report that outlined the trends in US consumerpersonal computer (PC) market in the next five years.

As consumers adopt multiple PCs such as tablet to fit their lifestyle, PCsales as a whole in the United States will grow by nearly 52 percent in the nextfive years, with nearly half a billion desktops, notebooks, tablets and netbooksexpected to be sold between now and 2015, the report projected.

Forrester believed that tablet will be an important factor to fuel the PC salesgrowth and shake up the PC market shares.

Tablet sales in the United States are expected to surge from a modest 3.5million units in 2010 to 20.4 million units in 2015, a 42-percent compoundannual growth rate.

By 2015, while full-size notebooks are projected to constitute the largestshare of 42 percent in the US consumer PC market, tablets are expected toemerge as the second largest category, making up 23 percent of PC unit sales, followed by desktops of 18 percent and netbooks of 17 percent.

NEW YORK, 19 June—RAF fighter pilot AndyGreen intends to get behind the wheel of a car thatis capable of reaching 1,000mph (1,610km/h).Powered by a rocket bolted to a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine, the Bloodhound car will mountan assault on the land speed record.

The highlight of the past month has been thedesign conference at the Bloodhound TechnicalCentre in Bristol. The rate of progress in the last fewweeks has been dizzying.

The wheel profiles have been chosen and we’recompleting the detailed wheel design. The wheelswill be solid aluminium and the profile of the treadis critical, as it determines how much sideways gripthe metal wheels can produce - too much grip andthe car could turn over, too little grip and it will beuncontrollable. After reviewing the wheel designsso far, we’re going for a simple V-shaped keel.

Security experts havefound that many of thekits used by cybercriminals are riddled withbugs and vulnerabilities.

Exploiting the bugsmight mean that theattack tools can be turnedagainst those using them.

The bugs found bythe researchers could beused to identify who isusing the tools and evenlaunch a counter-attack.

While some cyber

‘Watchful waiting’ often best strategy forslow-moving prostate cancer

STOCKHOLM, 19June— For patients with prostatecancer that has a low risk of progression, activesurveillance, also known as “watchful waiting,”may be a suitable treatment option, according to alarge-scale study from Sweden.

The issue of how (or whether) to treat localizedprostate cancer is controversial because, especiallyfor older men, the tumour may not progress farenough to cause real trouble during their remainingexpected lifespan. In those cases, deferring treatmentuntil there are signs of disease progression may bethe better option.

The researchers looked at almost 6,900 patientsfrom the National Prostate Cancer Registry Sweden, age 70 or younger, who had localized prostatecancer and a low or intermediate risk that the cancerwould progress. From 1997 through December2002, over 2,000 patients were assigned to activesurveillance, close to 3,400 underwent radicalprostatectomy (removal of the prostate and somesurrounding tissue), and more than 1,400 receivedradiation therapy.

After a median follow-up of just over 8 years, the surveillance group had a much higher deathrate from causes other than prostate cancer — 19.2percent, compared with 6.8 percent in theprostatectomy group and 10.9 percent in the radiationtherapy group.

This is despite the fact

that Malaysia’s economicdestiny may not be as tiedto the US and the EU asbefore with moreintraregional trade andrising domesticconsumption playing

more important rolestoday.

In fact, in the past twoweeks, analysts and newscommentators are nowsaying that 2010 may notbe as smooth-sailing forthe global economy afterall with some even sayingthat a double-diprecession may be aroundthe corner.

The overall messagein recent months has beenthat the concerns overpossible sovereign-debtdefaults in the euro-zonewill drag growth lower asEU governments rush toembrace austeritymeasures and privateconsumption falls.

Deflation—not Inflation—may be bigger threat toeconomy

New York, 19June—Economists andpolicymakers generallydon’t take the D-wordlightly, but when enougheconomic indicatorsshow falling prices, it’stime to ask if deflation, not inflation, is the moreimmediate threat to theUS economy.

WASHINGTON, 19 June—Regulators on Fridayshut down a Nevada bank, raising to 83 the numberof US bank failures this year.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. took overNevada Security Bank, based in Reno, with $480.3million in assets and $479.8 million in deposits.Umpqua Bank, based in Roseburg, Ore., agreed toassume the assets and deposits of the failed bank.

The failure of Nevada Security Bank is expectedto cost the deposit insurance fund $80.9 million.

In addition, the FDIC and Umpqua Bank agreedto share losses on $368.2 million of Nevada SecurityBank’s loans and other assets.

With 83 closures nationwide so far this year, the pace of bank failures is more than double thatof 2009, which was already a brisk year forshutdowns. By this time last year, regulators hadclosed 40 banks. The pace has accelerated asbanks’ losses amount on loans made for commercialproperty and development.

The number of bank failures is expected topeak this year and be slightly higher than the 140that fell in 2009. That was the highest annual tallysince 1992, at the height of the savings and loancrisis. The 2009 failures cost the insurance fundmore than $30 billion. Twenty-five banks failed in2008, the year the financial crisis struck with force, and only three succumbed in 2007.

As losses have mounted on loans made forcommercial property and development, the growingbank failures have sapped billions of dollars out ofthe deposit insurance fund. It fell into the red lastyear, and its deficit stood at $20.7 billion as of 31March.—Internet

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Sunday, 20 June, 2010 7

Brighter tomorrow for allMi Pyi Chit

Inseparable are the past, the present and thefuture, and interrelated to one another areyesterday, today and tomorrow. In like manner, itis unwise to ignore the relations in a family ofgreat grandparents, grandparents, parents, children, grand children and great grandchildren.

From the prehistory to date, human beingshave been well organized and civilized little bylittle, making efforts and improving lives ofindividuals. Therefore, instead of arguing aboutwhich is the primary between two things — eggor hen, we should turn to ensuring a good start.

In a short lifetime of a person, he has to facea variety of stresses and strains as well as to enjoypleasure, happiness, success and satisfaction. Inthat regard, physical and mental strengths areessential needs. Obtaining nutrition from food hehas had since birth, he grows up gradually. Andhe has to apply the knowledge and experiences hehas gained in his life in combination with hisphysical strength.

Wisdom protects life. So we have to exertcaution, wisdom, farsightedness and reasoningpower for our longevity. We should be capableenough of distinguishing between strong andweak points of material progress in order togenerate a prosperous future. There is greatdifference between conditions about 50 years agoand things at present. We have to accept the factthat the world sees advancements as well asnegative aspects of advancements simultaneously.

Positive attitude can reduce hustle and bustleof environs, being in a daze, depression andweariness. Similarly, every citizen has to equiphimself with optimistic views in work in order toimprove the conditions for each household, familyand the motherland. That is bounden duty ofevery citizen.

Due to endeavours of individuals, the worldhas developed from common ownership systemand feudal system to industrialization. There willbe more and more advancements in future.

If we do things best today, we can hopegood things tomorrow. If so, today was yesterday, tomorrow has become today, and the next daywill be tomorrow. I happened to look back to mychildhood. I attended the classes regularly inschool, I did my exercises regularly. In my sparetime, I played games with my friends. I studiedregularly. So, I always passed monthly tests andfinal examinations regularly. In schooldays, Inever failed to do daily routines in school such asmaking the cleaning and filling pots with drinkingwater for others.

I also did the cleaning in university with asense of responsibility. As a result of doing so forthe comfort and convenience of others, I havenever faced hard times in life.

In dealing with others, I made self sacrificesas far as I could. I am by nature keen to makeothers satisfied in dealing with me. Thus, in my

opinion, all should review their concepts and actsin order to shape a brighter future.

By doing wholesome acts with a spirit ofduty for a quarter or half an hour, we can hope goodthings in future. It is because we can gain greatbenefits by performing good deeds on a smallscale.

We can get well with neighbours and get onwith our business by living simply but doingambitiously.

In my married life, I contributed towards thesocial, religious, economic, education and healthaffairs and welfare services of my society as muchas I could, while trying my best to improve theliving conditions for my family.

Everyone has the rights to lead a peaceful, happy life in their society by mending their wrongways rather than putting blame on others. If wemake good use of our opportunities through ourknowledge, experience, caution and perseverance,we can pass many fruitful tomorrows.

The people have to work in the interest ofthemselves at first, then that of their families, andthen that of their home towns and mother country.I wish every citizen would adore and value theirmotherland Myanmar blessed with natural beauty, fine traditions and customs. And the people shouldbe content with what they are blessed with in thecountry. Hence, all who were born and havegrown up in the country should not place too muchreliance on any other country.

It is therefore mandatory for all the people, irrespective of race, region and religious faith, to dotheir bit in the nation-building tasks. However, they should not speak and act irresponsibly withthe intention of harming their own country andpeople.

The most fundamental need for a nation is toensure all school-age children have access to schooleducation. Only when younger generations areliterate will their societies be highly educated withpersonal hygiene. And they are capable ofimproving the economic, social and religious sectorsthrough their physical and mental calibres. Onlywhen all have completed basic education will it bepossible for the society to have self-discipline and

sense of duty, and their living standard will gethigher.

With economic growth due to harmoniousefforts of youths with high education standard, the nation can be transformed gradually into adiscipline-flourishing democratic one.

So, the people have to keep a good balancebetween personal interest and that of others, while carrying out both mundane andsupramundane affairs. They have not only tobroaden their horizons but to help improve theirsocieties.

There are many couples at the age of 50 to60 years who are leading uneasy lives, strivingfor bringing up their children and ensuring lifesecurity of their children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Overall, younger generations aremore hardworking than their forefathers. Today, the nation has enjoyed development at theunprecedented level owing to the collaborativeefforts of the people and the fervour of sharingduties. If we go over performances of yesterdaywith positive attitude, we can enjoy goodconditions today, and we can hope a prosperousfuture tomorrow. Then, Myanmar will become alovely land with prosperity, peace and stability.

Only when all do their bit in nation-buildingtasks, can our posterity lead a peaceful life withhigh health standard. Therefore, it is required ofevery citizen to work in harness for ensuringprosperous tomorrow. All have to keep marchingtowards the goal by exerting reviews, unity,duty-consciousness, diligence, morality, self-discipline, patriotism, helpful mind, politeness, ability to differentiate between good and bad, team spirit, and spirit of adoring own literatureand culture.

In conclusion, I wish all Myanmar citizens asuccess in pursuing common goal by sharingresponsibility for brighter tomorrow and prosperousfuture of our posterity, and putting Myanmar onthe map of the world. May the Union perpetuatewith consolidated national unity!

And may all be capable of participating inthe tasks for prosperous tomorrow for all.

Japan pledges to beat deflation andcut corporation tax

LONDON, 19 June—Japan’s new government has pledged to slashcorporation tax and beat deflation to achieve stable economicgrowth of 2% a year.

It said it aims to defeat deflation by April 2011, but revealed fewdetails on how it would achieve this.

The government also said it would cut corporate tax from 40%to nearer 25%.

Earlier this week, Japan’s central bank announced plans for upto 3 trillion yen (£22bn; $33bn) in loans to spur economic growth.

The plans mark the first time Japan has set a time frame fortackling deflation, which has plagued the economy for much ofthe last two decades. Persistent deflation has hampered economicgrowth, with consumers opting to hold off on making major pur-chases, expecting prices to fall even further.

However, the ambition of the new government was met withscepticism by some analysts.—Internet
