YAMAHA F60C AND F70A

3

Yamaha’s range of mid sized four stroke outboard engines have created a big reputation in Australia for their exceptional quality and versatility. With big steps forward in this category over the last ten years, including the introduction of electronic fuel injection to the F60C and the launch of Yamaha’s flagship F70A, owning a modern four stroke outboard offers customers some real advantages in terms of performance, economy and reliability. This document has been created to highlight some of these advantages.

Both the F60C and F70A feature a four cylinder design providing extremely smooth and quiet operation. Matched with Yamaha electronic fuel injection system these engines are also highly fuel efficient.

With the weight of the four stroke F60C and F70A being similar to their carburettor fed two-stoke equivalents, more and more customers are making the change from their trusty old two stoke to the more advanced and refined four stroke option. Repowers of this type completely change the characteristics of older boats, reinvigorating an old hull into something that feels completely new.

In terms of new boat packages, the over all performance delivered by the F60C and F70A paired with a modern hull is second to none. The range of boats brands and models available through Yamaha’s nation wide network of authorised dealerships that can be matched with these mid size engines is too numerous to mention.

All testing published in this document has been completed accurately by trained Yamaha technicians and can be reconstructed with confidence on these boats under similar conditions.

We hope you find the information in this brochure informative and interesting.

4 YAMAHA F70A power report

Yamaha F70AYamaha’s F70A has raised the bar in the 70hp category. Its introduction to the Australian market was met with much excitement and anticipation. Some people incorrectly assume this motor is just a tuned up F60C. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Although the two motors share the same capacity that is where the similarities finish. The F70A incorporates a completely redesigned powerhead utlising a four valve per cylinder, four cylinder design. This increases the intake area by 17% compared to the F60C and results in greater volumetric efficiency for outstanding acceleration and impressive top speeds. The F70A uses a single overhead camshaft rather than the conventional dual camshaft design for 16 valve engines. This award winning innovation reduces the weight that would result from having an extra camshaft and the components that go with it. It’s this feature, as well as a range of other weight savings throughout the design that make the F70A the lightest engine in its class, in fact it’s 35Kg lighter than it’s nearest four-stroke competitor and 21Kg lighter than its nearest direct injected two stoke competitor.A higher gear ratio has been utilised on this motor allowing the F70A to spin a larger propeller, getting more power to the water for more grunt. The F70A uses Yamaha’s “K” series of propellers, giving customers a wide selection of pitch and diameter variants to ensure the right prop is available for every application.

“It’s been said that Yamaha’s new 70hp four-stroke F70A is the most significant new outboard so far this century, and after testing several boats powered by one, I’m inclined to agree.”

Warren Steptoe, Freelance Marine Journalist.

Horsepower Per LitreAn advanced powerhead design features a single overhead camshaft (SOHC), yet with four valves per cylinder, for maximum power and efficiency. Total intake valve area is increased 17%, while the pistons and valves are up to 10% lighter (when compared to our F60 model), giving it substantially more horsepower-per-litre of engine displacement than competitive outboards, both four-stroke and two-stroke direct-injected. *Of engine displacement, rounded to nearest litre and horsepower

Lightest Weight in ClassFrom the specially designed engine block to the two-piece upper case, every gram of weight-savings has been realised for maximum performance without sacrificing durability. Yamaha’s new F70A is not only the lightest four-stroke 70 horsepower outboard, it’s even lighter than competitive two-stroke direct-injected outboards. **Published weight

Precise Throttle ControlAll air entering the engine block of Yamaha’s new F70A four-stroke is routed through a single throttle valve, to ensure the precise amount of air necessary for optimum power and fuel efficiency. It then enters each cylinder through individual long intake tracks, which are ‘pulse tuned’ to provide air at the precise volume and timing for maximum density and power.

Hole shot accelerationF70A provides outstanding hole shot and acceleration thanks in part to an advanced sensor that allows maximum safe ignition timing matched with a high ratio 2.33:1 gearcase, with specially hardened pinion, forward, and reverse gears for increased durability.

8 YAMAHA F60C power report

Yamaha F60CThe introduction of Yamaha’s F60C was a major step forward for four-stroke design. It set a new benchmark in terms of light weight and fuel efficiency. The F60C remains one of most reliable, economical and popular engines on the market today.Yamaha’s F60C makes use of an advanced microprocessor ECM (Engine Control Module) to control Yamaha’s exclusive multi point fuel injection system. By utilising an array of sensors around the engine, the ECM ensures the delivery of the perfect fuel and air mixture for optimum power and performance in all conditions. Its light weight, four cylinder design really sets the F60C apart from the competition. The F60C’s inline four cylinder configuration gives the engine a feeling of incredible balance and provides silky smooth operation. And at just 113Kg, the F60C balances beautifully on new hulls as well as older boats where two-stroke outboards were once the power option of preference. With turn key starting hot or cold, whisper quiet operation and low emissions, the F60C is a joy to use out on the water. Match this with great performance and stunning fuel efficiency and it is easy to see why this engine so quickly became, and has remained a favourite in the Australian market.

“People who’ve not yet had the benefit of a four-stroke experience find it hard to believe you can get an outboard (or any engine, for that matter) as quiet as this Yamaha F60C.

But there’s a lot more to this engine than just its quietness on the transom – it’s virtually vibration free, it has no smoke at all, and being equipped with a traditional four-stroke ‘sump’ does not use outboard oil.”

Peter Webster, Editor of Australian Fisherman and Boatowner
