Not Just Great MusicPerformances, but On-Location Sound Back in 1986, Yamaha engineersdeveloped a way to make preciseacoustic “maps” of some of theworld’s most famous performancevenues. The use of Dolby Surround enablesaudio decoding in a home theateraccording to the same principle as ina movie theater. But a home mediaroom is, of course, far smaller than a

High-Power, High-Quality Power Amplifier Most of the massive interior of theDSP-A1 is given over to the poweramplifier components, allowing it todeliver movie sound fields and musicreproduction with a never-before-heardfeeling of presence.

The DSP-A1 features an all-discreteconfiguration for the entire sevenpower amp channels that are used forCINEMA DSP playback. The surroundchannels handle Dolby Digital andDTS Digital Surround recorded withthe same quality and range as the mainchannels, while the five left, center andright, rear-effect left and rear-effectright channels have exactly the samepower and quality.

The amplifier’s power capability isformidable: rated output of 110 wattsfor the left, center, right, and two reareffect channels, and 35 watts for the

two front effect channels.

Auto Priority Input TerminalSelection and Auto DecoderSelectionDigital input terminals are provided tohandle any kind of digital input.Functions are programmed to selectpriority in order of AC-3RF, opticaldigital, coaxial digital and analog whendifferent digital formats are input fromthe same source. Macro-Command Remote Control Unit The macro-command remote control unit has a learning function and controls forother Yamaha A/V system components, so additional functions can be operated with atouch of the finger. Data for up to seven macro-commands can be stored in memoryfor everyday use at the touch of a single button. One example would be turning thepower on, selecting DVD/VCR 3 input, turning the power on to the DVD player,and starting play.v Basic functions can be selected with thedoor closed; opening it gives you access to awide range of additional controls.v You can use the learning function tohave the remote learn a total of 50commands for various other components.v There are 13 user-programmable macrokeys. Each one can remember up to sevensequential commands. To program a key,you press the Macro button, select themacro key to be programmed, select the functions you want memorized, and pressthe Macro button again. Thereafter, thefunctions you have selected will be engaged,in order, each time you press that macrokey.v The DSP-A1 and the RX-V2095 haveLED lighting. The RX-V995 hasluminescentlighting that staysbright for hoursafter 10–20minutes exposureto light.

If MOVIE THEATER 70mm, forexample, is selected and the input is aDTS signal, the DTS decoder is auto-matically engaged and a switch ismade to Movie Theater DTS Sci-Fi.If the signal is Dolby Digital, then aswitch is made to Movie TheaterDGTL Sci-Fi, whereas if the input isPCM or analog, Movie Theater70mm Sci-Fi is displayed. If aLaserDisc is played on Dolby Digital,the demodulator starts up and inputautomatically switches to AC-3RF.

The processing state and type offormat that is input and selected isshown on the right side of the frontpanel display. When a digital source isbeing input and the effect is turnedoff, sampling frequency and numberand type of channels are displayed.

Digital Input and Output for DVDThe DSP-A1 offers a Dolby Digital(AC-3RF) input terminal for LD play-ers that can handle Dolby Digital, fiveoptical and three digital input termi-nals, and one digital Rec Out terminalfor DVD players, MD recorders andCD players. Compatibility with eachinput means there is no need to botherwith initial settings.

Rec Out Selector with BGV Function The audio or video source can berecorded on VCR 1, 2 or 3 or Tape 1or 2. You can also record a differentsource on Tape 1 or VCR 1. The BGVfunction allows you to record an audiosource with a different video source.

Preout Terminals for All ChannelsAllow Use as a Processor with Effect Amp. All channels are provided with preoutterminals so you can add an externalpower amplifier to take even greateradvantage of the DSP-A1’s CINEMADSP functions. The left, right and center channels have pre-main couplers,allowing operation as an independentthree-channel power amplifier.

Advanced tuning of closed user parametersParameter configuration differs accordingto the sound field program, but there area total of 51 parameters for movies. Theselectable range of the parameters, determined after auditioning a large number of movie sources, is from severaltens to several hundreds of steps.

There are 11 parameters for the presence sound field, including the selection of the sound field pattern itself,room size, liveness and initial delay.There are 10 surround channel parame-ters for stereo and Dolby surround. The15 parameters for Dolby Digital includesurround sound field pattern, delay types,liveness and mixing rate types. The 15parameters for DTS Digital Surroundinclude independent surround soundfield patterns, delay types, liveness andmixing rate types.

HiFi DSP sound field programs HiFi DSP creates sound fields that havethe realistic feel of specific places. Theoriginal input signal is output without anyfurther processing, to which HiFi DSPadds a sound field. The decoded signalfrom a Dolby Digital or DTS source isoutput as is; only the reflected soundcomponent is added. This allows you tohear a sound field so lifelike that you willfeel as if you are actually in one of theworld’s great churches or concert halls.

The subwoofer is a vitally important component in hometheater systems. Low-frequency sounds, such as explosions,rumblings and scary music, add a lot to movie atmosphere, sofull audio enjoyment requires deep, clear bass response.
