[Our Mission]

It is the mission of St. Joseph/Marquette Catholic School to build Community and educate the total child

(spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially) in values consistent with the teachings of Jesus.

pre-Kindergarten Celebrates thanksgiving

Alumni Opinion In my opinion, St. Joseph/Marquette is a good school because you get a great

education in a good Catholic environment. To me the catholic environment is important because being Catholic is more that just going to church on Sunday. It is about believing in someone or something greater than yourself. It is about treating people the way you want to be treated. It is about remembering there is a bigger and better world beyond this one that we all want to get to.

I have gone to St. Joseph/Marquette for four years now. Before I came to this school, I attended public school. Public school was very different than it is here at St. Joseph/Marquette. Not just the number of students and size of the school but also the feeling you get when you are here. In public school there were lots of kids in my class and it felt like the teachers and staff did not know me or care about me. I did not feel I got the personal help or attention I needed. At St. Joseph/Marquette I feel like the teachers know me and care about me. They want to teach me and care how well I do. They want me to learn and understand each subject the best I can. Every day at St. Joseph Marquette they reinforce the same values and responsibilities that are important to me and my family. The classes are smaller so the teachers can give me the personal attention I need to learn. The staff and kids are nice and everybody at this school knows who you are and they look out for you.

To me St. Joseph Marquette is not just a school or a church it is a home away from home and because of that I think you learn more and quicker because you feel safe and are comfortable. I just can’t imagine going to a different school.

This was a speech prepared by Jaykob Schilperoort, class of 2009. It was to be given at the Clergy luncheon during National Catholic Schools Week. Jaykob was unable to give his speech due to illness but we thought it was important to publish it in the annual report.

[SRB Foundation Report]Happy Anniversary to us, Happy Anniversary to us

Dear Friends,

Yes, it is really true; we are twenty years old this October! We were a small group that wanted to help St. Joseph/Marquette stay the excellent school we all grew to love. Now, some of our board members grandchildren are attending St. Joe’s and they are still volunteering, giving

financial support and attending board meetings.

Back when SRB was formed it was uncharted territory; a group of parents putting up $150,000 to start a Bingo Hall and a foundation for the future of the school? Who would have dreamed that up? But if the board members hadn’t believed in Sr. Rebecca’s continual reminder of Divine Providence before, they believed by the time the old Layman’s market was remolded and we opened the doors for our first Bingo session in just 6 weeks.

St. Joseph/Marquette is one of the few grade schools that had a foundation working solely for its continuance. Over the last twenty years this foundation and its supporter’s, have contributed over five million dollars to St. Joseph/Marquette Catholic School’s operating budget. In addition, it has purchased and erected two different modular buildings on campus, fenced the parking lot, remodeled the old convent into the Mother Joseph Building for pre-K, replaced the windows in the St. Joseph buildings and repaired the roof, support the school fundraisers, subsidize the Mother Joseph rent and fund a Public Relations department. With the extra funds generated above these projects, and endowment was established, which value is approximately three million dollars give or take the ups and downs of the market.

The board continues to look for ways to contribute, from Grandparents Day to the Alumni Breakfast, SRB Crab Feed- with half of the ticket price going to the Sister Rebecca Berghoff tuition assistance fund, and now a face book page for the alumni to check in and give us updates on their lives. We are very grateful and feel blest that we are able be a viable part of the future of SJMMS.

[Principal’s Report] As I look back on the 2008/2009 school year what stands out to me is the extraordinary commitment that our teachers and staff have for their students here at St. Joseph/Marquette. From the Pre-Kindergarten to eighth grade, each teacher works tirelessly with your student not just on academics, but more importantly to teach that God loves them and that they are unique and special in his eyes.

I am also continually amazed at how well our alumni students are doing at their respective high schools. They plan and work on community projects, hold leadership positions, repeatedly make the honor roll, are elected to National Honor Society and some participate in sports. What’s more, they are accepted at the colleges of their choice and go on to graduate and some have obtained post graduate degrees. In other words, they are succeeding!

The annual move-in –night was the first glimpse some of you had of the summer improvements that were completed in the St. Joe’s building. Sometimes, it is hard for me to remember just how it looked before the new rugs, lockers and bathrooms were updated. Can you remember what the halls looked like? I have to think pretty hard to remember those wooden lockers. More changes were implemented on our web pages. Go to www.sjmms.org and check it out.

Events moved along pretty quickly at school; the Halloween Festival was certainly a fun night for the students (and parents). Mrs. Beth Layton-Kecskes worked diligently on our annual Christmas program. Isn’t it wonderful that your children can learn about and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas? For us who work in a Catholic school, this gives us great joy!

Another incredible feat was during the Lenten season. The staff wanted a school wide project that would benefit the local community. It was decided to make brown bag lunches to give to the Union Gospel Mission, Vineyard Church and St. Vincent De-Paul. Classes put on small fundraisers to raise money for supplies; and with the generous support from our parents, the classes made over 650 brown bag lunches.

The school year came to a close with an all school picnic at Ahtanum Youth Park. Mrs. Balmer worked feverishly to make this a fun day by organizing numerous class activities and contests. Squire AG provided color coordinated T-Shirts for each class, as well as lunch for our school community. The weather cooperated and a great time was had by all.

These are just a few of the many highlights from last year. Thank you for making it such a great year for your students and St. Joseph/Marquette teachers and staff.

Peace in Christ,

Gregg PlegerPrincipal

Equipped with few tools, but ample vision and faith in Providence, a small group of women led by Mother Joseph left a legacy in our Yakima Valley by opening St. Joseph Academy in 1875. Building upon this the Jesuits opened Marquette in 1918 as a high school, later to be retooled as our present day middle school. It is under the auspices of this profound heritage that we, as the school board, have had the great honor to serve you, our school community.

For the last couple of years the board has been exploring ways to reach out to our community at large, sharing the story of our school. It’s a story of faith. It’s a story of respect and compassion for others. It’s a story of excellence in education, and an environment for growing children that is second to none. It’s in all of us telling our own story to friends and family that more are drawn to share in our community, thus adding to the vitality of our illustrious institution.

Working together with our principal, our pastor, and staff of the school, the board has worked on many projects and activities throughout the year, including:

Providing input to the redesign of our website and printed materials

Organizing a luncheon at school for priests of our diocese where they had an opportunity to take a tour with students from their own parish

Planning for Catholic Schools Week and recruiting families to speak on behalf of the school at parishes across our community

Hosting an open house in February

Advising on a multitude of matters, including updates to the school’s dress code

Promoting service projects and a chance to earn a service t-shirt to wear

Attempting to launch a half-day preschool program for three-year-olds, which will be reattempted next year as an all-day program

We would like to thank you for the opportunity to serve during the past year. God bless us all that we may serve as proper stewards of our most precious school, St. Joseph-Marquette.

A Note from Anissa

Another successful year of fundraising is done! The Parent Board was again committed to raising as much money as possible. We started off the year with the magazine sale and continued right into the raffle kick-off while at the same time planning for the Salmon Dinner, Dance and Auction. Fall was a very busy time for some very dedicated volunteers. Another very successful Crab Feed happened in February and we jogged our way to Spring Break at the end of March. At least this year there was no snow falling! We ended our year with the golf tourney at Mount Adams. The Mercy Golf Team was the eventual winning team after a grueling play-off in the POURING DOWN RAIN! Even with our successful year, Parent Board ended up barely making our budgeted amount of $160,000. It was a year of many ups and down for fundraising with the raffle down $20,000 from the previous year sales, the pressure was on to make budget right down to the last fundraiser! In the end, we did it and many thanks go out to our fundraising chairs. You rock! One of the greatest assets that St. Joseph Marquette has is the awesome volunteers that make things happen. We are truly a blessed school to have as many dedicated parents, friends and families. Without the commitment of these individuals, the school would not exist. I personally want to thank anyone who has ever volunteered for anything at St. Joseph Marquette Catholic School. It is because of these people that we continue on with our tradition of excellence. We look forward to another successful year of fundraising!

Thank you and God Bless.
