Yahoo CES for Marketers
Survival Guide
David Pogue’s Tips for Tackling CES Like a Tech Expert
Yahoo Tech Editor-In-Chief offers marketers his tips for powering through the tech industry’s biggest event
CES is the biggest trade show in North America. Seven
football fields’ worth of booths. 3200 exhibitors. It’s
bright, it’s deafening, it’s thousands of giant flat panel
TVs stretching up to the ceiling. Your feet are basically
bloody stumps by the end of the week!
All of it is meant to show the press and the
industry what the coming year in consumer tech will
look like. Often, you slap your forehead at the silliness
of some of these attempts (you’ll see a lot of curved TV
sets this year). But you can’t deny that here, all under
one roof (well, five roofs), is the entire industry, opening
the kimono.
TIPS FOR SURVIVING CES
• Your phone battery will go quickly. Carry one of those
backup chargers, like the MyCharge Jolt2000M or the Anker
Second Generation Astro.
• WiFi is hard to come by. Consider a MiFi or a tethering
cellphone plan.
• Taxi lines are absurd. Make sure to leave a LOT of time
before each appointment that’s not on the Convention
Center grounds. Consider hotel shuttles or Uber, although
Uber can be spotty in some parts of the city.
• Drink a lot of water. Bring a reusable water bottle that you
can fill at the water fountains.

One time, at CES...“
I was hanging out with some other journalists late in
the day; we decided to go get dinner together. But
we didn’t have reservations anywhere, so we started
walking from restaurant to restaurant within the hotel
complexes. All of them had 2-hour waits, or worse.
We spent over an hour just trying to get into any
place for dinner—no luck.
Finally, we all went up to one writer’s hotel room and
made a massive room-service order. The eight of us
had dinner sitting on her bed. Desperate times, but
lesson learned, make your reservations early.
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THESE TRENDS
• Wearable computers, glasses, watches. Nobody’s made this
work yet.
• Fitness wearables. These are far more successful and
popular—and they’ll be doing a lot more than tracking
footsteps. Look for bands that measure your heart rate,
blood oxygen, skin temperature.
• Curved TVs. Again.
• Ultra 4K TVs. Four times the resolution of HDTV (Not
mentioned by the vendors: There’s nothing to WATCH in 4K.)
• Internet of Things, aka “household devices you can control
with your phone.”
• Self-driving cars.

Yahoo Travel Shows You How to Plan Like a Pro for CES
Upgrade your business travel smarts from bundle-wrapping to where to stay in Las Vegas
We all know that business trips can be stressful, especially
for big events like CES. Still deciding on where to stay or
how to get to the Strip from the airport? Not sure what to
do when you have some free time? Not to worry, we’ve got
you covered. Here are some tips to keep your travel
stress-free and under control.
PACKING TIP TO AVOID WRINKLY CLOTHES
WHERE TO STAY
6
This is Vegas. You expect your hotel to be a little city unto
itself. We are in love with the SLS Las Vegas Hotel & Casino
these days because it has absolutely everything we want. This
elite new spot caters to a variety of tastes without sacrificing
any of the cool. The rooms are spacious and have excellent
views of the strip and when it comes to dining there you can't
go wrong. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation at José
Andrés’ Bazaar Meat. Seriously. What are you waiting for?
On a budget? The El Cortez Cabana Suites are a great value
in a town that has a lot of pricey lodging.
Try bundle-wrapping to avoid wrinkles. It’s a technique that
involves wrapping clothes around a central object to avoid
the folds that cause wrinkles in the first place.

Think downtown Vegas is all pawn shops and motels? Think
again. You'll have to experience Fremont Street in downtown
Las Vegas to believe just how serious this neighborhood's
Renaissance really is. From its hip bars and bistros to light
shows and musical acts lining the streets on most nights of the
week, this is considered THE most happening place in Sin City
right now.
Take 30 minutes and ride the High Roller, the new 550-foot-tall
observation wheel at Caesars’ LINQ shopping and
entertainment district. It’s the world’s tallest observations
wheel and you are going to want to take a selfie at the top.
Trust me. Let me offer you a High-Roller pro-tip: Make sure to
get the car with the bar. 30 minutes never seemed so long
without a drink. And if you're going for the margarita, don't get
the double. It will run you more than $30 bucks.
If I can offer you one piece of Vegas advice that you actually
take, this is it— find respite from the crowds and noise an hour
away in the red-rock desert formations at Valley of Fire State
park or the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area. It is
worth it!
• Your hotel doesn’t offer an airport shuttle? Try taking the
Route 109, a regional transit bus that will pick you up at
McCarran International Airport and take you right to the Strip.
• Of course, you can always take a taxi. Most of the taxis take
credit cards these days, but check before you get in.
• Uber is always an option, but we've found that it can be
spotty in some parts of the city.
• Don’t be that annoying tourist. Here are some tips to not piss
off a Las Vegan. Here’s a hint: don’t shout “Vegas, baby!”

Yahoo Style Editor-in-Chief Has Your CES Outfits Covered From A to Zee
Joe Zee shares his minimalist approach to mastering CES style
There is never a dull moment in Las Vegas, especially if
you're attending a conference like CES. I always say that
if you look good, you feel good, so it's important to
come armed with the necessities. And there's no need
to compromise your style while attending the
conference. Here are some tips and tricks to help you
prepare for your trip.
HOW TO PACK LIKE A MINIMALIST
• To maximize the space in your luggage, choose clothes
that are fashionable and functional. Always bring an
arsenal of basics like two button-up shirts, one blazer and
a pair of trousers.
• Include pieces with similar color schemes that you can
mix and match, wear and re-wear.
• Pack one pair of pajamas, two pairs of shoes, and a bag
of toiletries for good measure. Voila! (For the ladies, we
recommend one pair of heels and one pair of flats.)

HOW TO DRESS TO IMPRESS
When you attend a conference like CES, you do so with a
purpose – to learn, create impressions, or establish new
connections. So wearing appropriate outfits is paramount and
confidence is key.
Whether you’re a lady or a gent, throw a structured blazer over
a crisp button-up with trousers for an outfit that can take you
from client meetings and the CES floor to a late dinner. It might
look something like this:
Las Vegas style is synonymous with sequins, feathers, and
jewels. While the aforementioned trimmings may not be ideal
for CES, there’s no harm in incorporating some glitz and glam
into your daily looks. Here are four accessories that can take
you from the conference to a night out on the town.
For the men, take a similar approach. Just make sure the fit is right.

Bobbi Brown’s CES Beauty Basics
Yahoo Beauty Editor-in-Chief provides the inside scoop on looking polished in a pinch
When I think of Las Vegas, I think of seeing Elvis with
my mother in the 70’s, and bringing his cigars home as
a souvenir. But you’re flying into town for CES—
a whirlwind event in a nonstop town that’s changed
quite a bit since The King shook his hips on stage. You
want to look your best, but you also want to have fun.
Armed with these on-the-go beauty tricks, you’ll know
what to pack, how to experiment, and exactly where to
go to refresh and recharge—and I don’t mean
your phone.
MUST-PACK BEAUTY ITEMS
10
Your beauty products have to last all day long at CES.
Make sure to bring:
• A long-wear formula brown eye pencil (it’s softer than
black, more conference than club)
• An easy-to-apply cream blush
• A BB cream to cover your bases: moisturizer, sunscreen,
and coverage in just one step.

TRY THESE BEAUTY LOOKS FOR DAY AND NIGHT
Regardless of the look, my motto is: be who you are. Beauty is about so much more than makeup, so be confident and comfortable in your skin.

For day:A classic, neutral face always looks
professional. We enlisted celebrity
makeup artist Fiona Stiles to create two
versions of this look. A subtle smoky eye
looks modern and confident, like you
made an effort without spending an hour
in the makeup chair.
For night:A jolt of red lipstick is the easiest way to
transition from day to night. Before
heading to dinner, swipe some on, then
define your eyes with a bit of black
eyeliner and sweep some silver sparkle
eye shadow on your eyelid—this is
Vegas, after all. (Not comfortable with a
bold red lip? Try a muted red lip instead.
And while we’re at it, here’s a tip to
make sure your eyeliner doesn’t budge.)
For a manicure
Not surprisingly, there’s nothing more pampering than the Four
Seasons Hotel Spa. Drop in for a manicure, stay for the soothing
atmosphere.
For a blow out
The Salon at the Bellagio is known for their blow-outs. Their
most famous? The "Bellagio Blow Out,” but they’ll happily style
your hair however you prefer.
For a relaxing spa treatment post-CES
Head to the Red Flower Hamaam at the Cosmopolitan Hotel &
Spa and experience a centuries-old practice of detoxification
and relaxation. Don’t blame us when you don’t want to leave.
