Farhad Vladi was studying economics and RenéBoehm law in Hamburg, Germany, when theydecided to become partners,with a view to the

establishment of what, at the beginning of the 1970s,was a novel enterprise: the sale of private islands.And that’s how Boehm & Vladi was born.The successful partnership during which they establishedthe world’s first and only firm dedicated to the sale ofprivate islands lasted until 1985, when the two mendecided to go their separate ways, despite remainingfriends. Mr. Vladi set up offices in Halifax, Nova Sco-tia, while maintaining the firm’s headquarters in Ham-burg, his native city. Vladi Private Islands also hasoffices in Wellington (New Zealand).In the last four decades, Vladi Private Islands has soldmore than 2,000 islands and island castles and hasrented out thousands of others. At the heart of thecompany are files kept at the Hamburg office, whichcontain information on more than 12,000 properties.Each file contains detailed data on a particular island:topographical maps, marine charts, aerial photo-graphs of the property, its natural features and man-made installations, extracts from property filesrecorded at local deed offices, appraisal notes, corre-spondence carried on with the owner, and reports on
