Dear YAAEYC Members,

Thank you for attending the 2010 Annual Early Childhood Confer-ence. We had a variety of new presenters with new training topicsat our conference this year. I hope you found the experience re-warding and enlightening, and are able to use the informationlearned in the workshops in your profession.

We look forward to the fantastic events to be held during thisyears Week of the Young Child to be held April 10-April 16, 2010.The plans will be put into action shortly! Look for updates on theYAAEYC website.

2010 YAAEYC Conference

Our annual YAAEYC Early Childhood Conference was held on Saturday, October 23rd. We hada great turn out. Over 350 early childhood professionals participated in this years conference. Wehave received very positive feedback from participants, presenters and vendors.

According to surveys turned in to the conference committee, participants were especially im-pressed with the sessions that were offered this year. We are excited to hear that this continues tobe a worthwhile experience. As always, the committee, Penn State staff and everyone involvedworked very hard to make this conference a great success. We want to thank everyone for all theirhard work!

As always, we welcome any feedback regarding how we can improve. The conference commit-tee is always looking for volunteers to serve on our committee to begin work on next years confer-ence. Putting this together is a big undertaking and we are always looking for enthusiastic volun-teers to work on planning, registering and, of course, helping out on the big day! Its an exciting time to be a PennAEYC member! During the weekend of November 13th and 14thPennAEYC held its annual retreat. This was the first time in PennAEYC history that all fourteen lo-cal affiliates were represented at the meeting. At the retreat, PennAEYC board members voted toadopt a strategic plan which aims to strengthen the organization by bringing legal, fund developmentand personnel expertise to the board, adding paid staff, and strengthening the synergy betweenPennAEYC and AEYC local affiliates such as YAAEYC.

The Public Policy Committee looks forward to working with a brand new administration. There is alevel of excitement and uncertainty that early childhood providers are feeling. One way to combatthat is to make connections with legislators early on. Please make sure you are congratulating yourelected legislators. A quick thank you note is always appreciated! Week of the Young Child

The Week of the Young Child Committee hasstarted up again! The Week of the Young Child isan annual celebration, which focuses public atten-tion on the needs of young children and their fami-

lies and to recognize the early childhood programsand services that meet those needs. After lastyears super successful week, we hope to expandour events, and get more community involve-ment. The highlight of the Week of the YoungChild is our WOYC Banquet honoring all providersof high quality ECE. We are currently recruiting formembers of the committee to help with everythingfrom prize gathering to promotion to helping withthe WOYC dinner (and much more!). Our meet-ings are at the United Way and will be from 1-3-ishon November 10, December 8, January 12, Feb-ruary 9, and (possibly) April 6.

One Book

Every Young Child

The 2011 selection for One Book EveryYoung Child is Stephen Swinburnes WhoseShoes. This photographic picture book

shares everyday people and what they dowith the shoes they wear. Children will enjoymatching people with their footwear.

The book will be officially unveiled in April dur-ing the Week of the Young Child at a recep-tion in Harrisburg. Copies will be coming toyour location in the Spring or join us at the Va-lencia on Thursday, April 15, 2011 for theproviders recognition banquet and receiveyour free copy.

Family Place Workshops for parents with children birth to 3 will begin again in January. Programsare Wednesday from 10 AM until 11:15 AM starting January 5 th. Thursday programs run from 6:15PM until 7:30 PM starting January 6th. These are 5 week programs designed to promote play be-tween parents and children and interaction with child specialists. Families will learn about the li-brary, receive library cards and may ask questions about issues unique to their child.

Library Update

Watch for information from your local library regarding Read Across America Day which will be heldon March 2nd. Libraries will celebrate Dr. Seusss birthday with a variety of programs and activitiesfor children.

Remember the library is open on Sundays from 1 PM until 5 PM. Stop in andvisit the family computing center.
