To Students and Parents

This guide is intended to support parents and students to work collaboratively to have a shared understanding of the curriculum.

We have put together the topics students are studying in each subject along with a recommended reading list.

We would like to encourage families to purchase the recommended texts, if possible, in order to work with students to gain a deeper understanding of the curriculum.

We hope that through this approach our students will excel in their academic journey and continue to succeed in their studies.

Ibrahim Syed,Director of Learning - Investigation

Jubair Ahmed, !Director of Learning - Participation

EnglishIn year 8 we focus on consolidating and developing the skills students have developed in Year 7. !

Students get the opportunity to study a wide range of texts and genres covering non-fiction reading and writing, poetry, Shakespeare and the opportunity to study a whole novel. !

We put particular emphasis on Independent Learning in year 8 so students make a strong start to their academic career with us. The work they do independently at home is highly valued and an integral part of their development as learners.

MathematicsStudents study the new KS3 Mathematics curriculum throughout year 7-9, covering content from the following curriculum areas: Number; Algebra; Geometry & Measures; Statistics & Probability. !Students will use their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical contexts. They will also apply the functional elements of Mathematics in everyday and real life situations. The course is 100% assessed with 2 examination papers at the end of Year 7-9. Students will sit a test at the end of each half-term to indicate what level they are working at. It is important that students revise their work regularly and practice skills learnt in lessons at home.

St Paul’s Way

All topics include a range of practical and theoretical study of the fundamental principles of science. The topics are key chapters in the science textbooks supplied to all students at the beginning of the year. Students will be assessed on practical skills, report writing and theoretical knowledge which are supported through two key set of assessments for each topic. At the end of the year there will be a final exam covering all materials taught. !

Assessments: Formative assessment - A mid-point examination to provide next steps to for each student.!

Summative assessment – An end of topic assessment to provide working at level for that topic. !

End of year assessment – An assessment incorporating all topics taught during the year.

Computing

Trust School

St Paul’s Way

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Geography

Trust School

St Paul’s Way

Year 8 sees students complete Geography as a discreet subject for the first time at SPWT. Students will consolidate their Geographical skills of enquiry with a field trip exploring and investigating Crime and how it changes as we travel through a transect of London. !

Students then complete a topic on Development which will underpin all of their Geographical studies at KS3 and apply this understanding to Wild Africa and Water Works. !In Spring 2 students explore how physical and human geography is interconnected through the study of Rivers and Flooding. Students finally develop their Geographical knowledge and speaking skills through the study of Cybergeographies and are challenged to see whether Geography is still relevant in the 21st Century.

Religious EducationYear 8 sees students complete RE as a stand-alone subject for the first time at SPWT. The Year 8 RE programme is designed to bridge the gap between Year 7 and the GCSE in Religious Education which students complete as an early entry GCSE studied in Year 9-10. The course is designed to increase students’ critical skills and religious literacy by introducing a challenging and skills-based programme which includes a large component of Philosophy for Children. This is a programme which has proved successful in increasing students’ higher level thinking and analysis with proven benefits across the curriculum. It is also an opportunity to introduce students to di$erent worldviews and to critically assess their own beliefs and those of others.
