Y4 Learning pack – Week 13 (13/7/2020) Summer term Hello lovely Year 4s! Can you believe we are nearly at the summer holidays! This has been such a strange year, but we think you have all coped so well and you should be proud! What have you been getting up to? Have you had a BBQ, read a new book you loved, met up with some friends (socially distanced, of course!) or learnt a new skill? We’d love to know! We all really hope you’re well and safe and we miss you very much. This is the last installment in the year 4 learning packs for you to work on at home. All of these have been designed for you to be able to have a go at them on your own, but if you have an adult or sibling that can work with you, it’d be great if you could talk through your answers and explain why you think what you do. There are some Reading, Writing and Maths activities (and a few extra challenges and activities thrown in for you). We have designed these to keep your mind active during these strange times. There are lots of ideas for useful websites and challenges on the school website and twitter. We’d love to see the work that you complete! Please make sure you ask your grown-ups to share it with us on twitter or email it to us at [email protected] or [email protected]. We really hope to see you soon. Keep us posted with what you’ve been up to (and with the books you’ve been reading, so you can share your recommended reads with your friends). Stay safe and happy. Love from Miss Saunders, Miss Kirkpatrick and Miss Hudson

Writing task 1 – Plastic pollution poster
Plastic pollution in the sea is a big issue that affects the marine environment. Your task is to create a
poster to spread the awareness of plastic pollution and how we can reduce our plastic use. To complete
your poster, you may want to do some research into what plastic pollution is and how the problem can be
stopped.
Here are some websites on plastic pollution that will help with your research:
https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/kids-club/cool-kids/general-kids-club/plastic-pollution/
https://www.sas.org.uk/our-work/plastic-pollution/plastic-pollution-facts-figures/
Your poster must include:
5 facts/figures (decide before you create your poster)
Superlatives (Superlative adjectives are used to compare three or more nouns e.g. best, fastest, biggest)
Comparatives (Comparative adjectives are used to compare one noun to another noun e.g. better, faster,
bigger)
Remember to make your poster bright and colourful so that it is eye-catching!
Writing task 2 – SPaG
Writing task 3 – Balanced argument - Animals in captivity
Your task is to research both for and against arguments to answer the question ‘Are zoos cruel and should
animals be released into the wild?’. Consider different points of view as well as your own. Consider why
some people would want to keep zoos open while others would want them to close permanently. Write
your answers on the table below, or if you do not have a printer you can draw your own for and against
table on a sheet of paper neatly using a ruler.
Once you have collected enough evidence for each side, write a balanced argument to answer the question
‘Are zoos cruel and should animals be released into the wild?’. Use the poster below to remind you which
key features you should include in your balanced argument.
Here are some videos that look at both points of view. You might want to use these videos to help you:

Maths tasks
Work can be printed off for you to work on, or you can watch and listen to the video on the screen and
then work on the questions on a piece of paper. Do whatever works best for you. The documents for each
task are also linked below for you to download if this makes it easier. The answers are linked on the
website. As we haven’t covered everything in school this year, we are moving away from videos on White
Rose as these cover areas we have not yet taught in school this year. You can still watch them if you want
to! The activities are still from White Rose that we use in school.

One of the most important areas of Maths to keep working on (when you can) is mental arithmetic, so ask
someone at home to quiz you on some questions that you might be able to do in your head (these might
be adding two digit numbers, times table facts, subtracting two digit numbers from 100).
Please also keep using Times Table Rocks Stars; this will help you to keep improving your times table
knowledge and to get even quicker as answering multiplication questions. If you’re using social media to
keep in touch with your friends, maybe you could set each other times table quizzes to answer!
Maths task 5: Friday Challenge
Creative Task – Koi Fish art
A few weeks ago, you looked at and created your own version of ‘The Great Wave’ by Hokusai. Your task this week is to create your own Koi Fish artwork like Hokusai. You can create your fish in any way you wish. You might want to use pencil, paint or make a collage. There is no right or wrong way to complete this artwork, just be as creative as you like! Have a look at the website below to for step-by-step instructions to create your very Koi fish if you wish to draw it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_scKTVnreU
Don’t forget to share your lovely art work with us on twitter or email it to [email protected]. We really look forward to seeing your wonderful creations!
