A FULFILLING LIFESTYLEMeet Caroline Moh, 59 years old, a shy, jovial and active lady who had chosen to work beyond 55 and still manage to balance her work, family and interests.

On a typical weekday, Caroline works as a Financial Controller during the day, and a homecook and gym enthusiast at night. Over weekends, she would look out for new experiences like volunteering and attending regular Zumba classes. Even during her leave, she would take up classes of her interest, or travel around with her husband and son.

LAUNCHING A SECOND CAREERWhile weighing up her options in 2012 after retiring, Caroline received

TIME TO MEET SOMEONE NEW…

Caroline Moh Remains Productive and Positive in Her Second Career

a welcome letter and fl yer from U Live and found herself participating in a series of activities like Smartphone Workshop, Zumba, and ambassador mentoring programme that led Caroline to become an active volunteer with U Live.

Through U Live, she also undertook a skills upgrading workshop on Microsoft Offi ce conducted by NTUC Learning Hub. Her trainer for this course saw her capabilities and encouraged her to return to the workforce. Eventually, she took up a one year contract job followed by a full time position as a Financial Controller to what she now calls her second career.

“Originally I really wanted to retire and just live my life without work stress. But halfway into it, as I got

more involved in U Live Programmes, I realised that there’s so much moreI can do and achieve.”

STAYING POSITIVE AND ACTIVEWhat is amazing about Caroline is not just her positive spirit but her passion in embracing an active lifestyle both at work and play!

“If you put it off, you’ll never get to do it!”, that is what Caroline said to encourage others to leave their comfort zones, and challenge themselves. She has successfully convinced her husband and friends to join her for Zumba class and other U Live activities.

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARNStaying active at this age is not easy. Caroline also fi nds learning new things a challenge.

“As a Financial Controller for many years, now I have to re-learn cost accounting at my present work. I would always remind myself to have a positive attitude, never ‘too old’ to learn and re-learn.”

I would always remind myself to have a positive attitude, never ‘too old’ to learn and re-learn.

If you are like Caroline and keen to learn and enhance your skill set, join our U Live Symposium. Details are on page 10 of our newsletter. You will fi nd a series of engaging workshops to help you become increasingly productive, and to enjoy life more as you grow older.

Many U Live Members have questions on how to stay in the workforce and continue to be productive. Francis Chiang, 63 years old, met up with Noel Choh, Senior Employability Coach from Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability to answer some of these queries.

Francis: Is it true that employers prefer to hire young employees?

Noel: I would say that age does not have to be the most important factor in hiring someone; what is more important to employers is a combination of attitude, skills and experience.

TIME TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES…

Employment for Seniors Your Questions Answered

Francis: How can I continue to stay in the workforce, beyond the retirement age?

Noel: Some employees continue to work due to fi nancial commitments. If so, I would recommend that they continue on in their current fi eld where they have built up a strong foundation.

Other employees are looking to work to stay active and may want to look beyond their current fi eld and consider other areas. In most cases, these employees simply need directions on how to fi nd these jobs, and what they need to do in order

to gain appropriate skills needed on those jobs.

Francis: How can I upgrade my skills and improve my career opportunities?

Noel: This generally involves 4 components:• Qualifi cation / Certifi cation relevant to the chosen job type• Experience in the chosen job type• Expertise in a specifi c job function• Soft skills

You would need to evaluate where you are lacking and look to improve in those areas.

Francis: How would attending the Employability Camp or Executive Workshop help me?

Noel: The Employability Camp and Executive Workshop give participants the basic skills necessary to improve their chances at securing employment. You will learn about the right type of mindset to adopt, resume writing and interview handling techniques.

“ “TIME TO PLAN...

6

Simply go through the following pointers to get yourself ready for the retirement lifestyle you look forward to.

STEP 1: FINANCIAL READINESSIt is important to determine if you have budgeted suffi ciently for your retirement’s fi nancial needs. You will need to estimate the annual expenses required during retirement. This includes setting money aside for

a. Transport, utilities and household expenses, maid, allowances for dependents, taxes, food and other necessities.

b. Children’s education, mortgage/rental repayments, insurances or other unexpected expenses.

Apart from the total savings that you have and other sources of income, you need to fi nd out if the amount

in your CPF accounts is suffi cient to last you during your retirement and the estimated amount of extra money required to cover your retirement needs.

You should set aside enough savings or be insured suffi ciently to pay for you and your dependents’ medical expenses. You can check the average medical costs on Ministry of Health’s website at www.moh.gov.sg

You may refer to the retirement savings calculator on CPF Board’s website www.cpf.gov.sg to estimate the amount of savings you will need for your retirement.

STEP 2: LIFESTYLE PLANNINGWhen you have determined your fi nancial status, you can start to plan the possible activities in the

fi rst 3 months, 3 to 6 months and 6 months after your retirement. Take into consideration the amount you have budgeted for it, and to have a backup plan if these initial plans are not sustainable.

Here are some options that you can consider:

a. Re-employment options i. Full time work ii. Flexible work arrangements e.g. part-time work, fl exi-time, job sharing, etc. b. Voluntary workc. Take care of your grandchildrend. Skills upgradinge. Pursue your hobbiesf. Join exercise classes to keep fi t

When you have fi nalised on your retirement plan, do not forget to share with your family, friends and close ones.

To visualise the lifestyle, you could always do up a schedule to follow through the plan.

REJOINING THE WORKFORCEIf you are pondering to stay in the workforce, you can try to discuss with your employer to take up re-employment to understand what

are the jobs that you can do.

Re-employment could mean that you need to undergo re-training for a same or different job with a variation to your wages.

You can also consider working part-time or on a fl exi work arrangement.

Remember, re-employment willnot only help you lead a Happy, Healthy, Productive and Purposeful life, but also give you more time to build up your fi nances.

If you have more queries on re-employment, email to us at [email protected]

7

How do you prepare for retirement? It is important to plan early for your golden years. Hope our 2-step guide can help you look at your retirement readiness and chart your plans for the lifestyle you dream of.

You should set aside enough savings or be insured suffi ciently to pay for you and your dependents’ medical expenses.
