Writing – Sizzling

Starts (using

Onomatopoeia)

This week we will be

looking at using

Sizzling Starts and

exploring 2 techniques

to quickly get our

reader’s attention.

* One way to do this is

by using sound effect

words to start the story.

Reading Eggs Work on reading eggs for 20

“Check In Task”

Writing – Sizzling

Starts (using

Onomatopoeia) * Revise what an

onomatopoeia is from

yesterday’s lesson (a

sound effect word).

* Using the attached

picture prompt, record 2

or 3 sounds the children

in the picture might be

able to hear. Choose one

of your recorded sounds

and use it to create a

Sizzling Start consisting

of 1 – 2 sentences.

Take a 10 minutes

Crunch and Sip break.

Writing- Sizzling Starts

(using action) *Yesterday we looked at

using a sound word to

create a Sizzling Start.

Today we will start our

story where the action is.

* Watch the following

short YouTube video.

https://www.youtube.com

/watch?v=Rr6FSWh9_z0

*Good writers often grab

the reader’s attention by

starting right where the

action is happening.

* If your story is about

the soccer grand final, we

don’t need to know what

you ate for breakfast or

who took you to the game.

Reading Eggs

Work on reading eggs for 20

minutes.

https://readingeggs.com.au/

Take a 10 minute Crunch

and Sip break.

Writing -Sizzling Starts

This week we looked at

Sizzling Starts using these

techniques:

• Start with a sound

“CRASH! The large silver and

red rocket came to a quick

stop as it fell from the sky

into the desert.”

• Start with action

The powerful wave crashed

on top of our heads as we

tried to swim into the water.

I tried to catch my breath

before another giant wave

arrived.

Page 4: Y2 Learning Support (Literacy & Numeracy) Week 6

Sound words are also

called “onomatopoeia”

Activity 1:

* Onomatopoeia means a

word that imitates the

sound it represents.

Example: Bang! Pop! Zip!

* Listen to the story

“Summer Beat”, paying

particular attention to

the use of

onomatopoeias (sound

words).

https://www.youtube.co

m/watch?v=FfWyQg143

nw

*After you have listened

to the story complete

the attached worksheet

by matching the

onomatopoeia (sound

The reader wants to get

straight into the action of

grand final to feel the

excitement and emotion.

* Read and discuss with

an adult how following

sentences get straight

into the action. Did they

grab your interest?

Eg:

1) The crowd cheered

loudly as the ball flew into

the back of soccer nets.

2) The stadium fell quiet,

and Max could feel

everyone’s eyes on him as

he took aim at goals with

the soccer ball.

3) The ref blew his

whistle. The 2021 soccer

grand final had begun!

Activity:

Use on of the following

sizzling action starters to

write the beginning of a

story (2-3 sentences).

1) I arrived home, but …

2) Jane walked up the

steps, at the front of the

haunted house…

3) Tim looked at the

treasure map….

Activity: “Check In Task”

Use the ‘Winter’ picture

prompt attached to write a

Sizzling Start on the

worksheet provided. Create 1

– 3 sentences.

You can start with start

either a sound effect word,

with an action,

word) with the object

that made the sound.

Activity 2:

*Choose one of the

following onomatopoeia

words and put it into a

sentence:

bang

splat

achoo,

boom

squeak

*Underline the

onomatopoeia in your

sentence:

Eg: Vroom, the police

car raced past the

front of the school!

sentence answer using

counting on from the

smaller number all the

way to the bigger

number.

Model to students:

8 – 2 =

8...7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. The

answer is 6.

Then model how it can

be changed into an

addition number

sentence by counting

We can sort shapes by

the number of vertices,

sides and curved/straight

lines.

Introduce quadrilaterals –

A shape with 4 sides.

Students have their own

shapes based on the

number of vertices and

Activity

We’re going on a shape

hunt...

Students are shape

detectives again. They are to

go on a shape hunt around

their house and backyard to

find different 2D shapes.

Shapes they can find include

square, circle, triangle,

rectangle, hexagon,

pentagon, octagon and
