PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

RESEARCH PROJECTSIt was my pleasure to listen to the Y7 enrichment class’ IRP presentations to their parents last week. The diversity of their projects was inspiring and motivating especially to the incoming Y7 group and their parents.

ACCELERATED BIOLOGYAcceleration has been offered in Biology and already begun. Thanks to Ms Pratten and Mrs Mullen for their ongoing role in this. Head Teachers will observe the process with a view to other options beyond 2018.

EARLY COMMENCEMENTWe are offering 2 courses for early commencement for 2018: Hospitality and IT. These are dependent on minimum numbers enrolling in these courses and an interview process to enable entry.

OUR NEW SCHOOL CAPTAINSCongratulations also to our new School Captains Rodney Cerezo and Abbie Stewart and Vice Captains Nicholas Watson and Kyah McBride. I am confident they will do an excellent job representing our school.

BEST WISHES TO YEAR 12I would like to wish our outgoing Y12s all the very best for their HSC and acknowledge the work of our current captains Taylor, Casey, Ella and Brad.

NEW BUSINESS MANAGERWelcome to Karen Feeney our new Business Manager. Karen is now responsible for casual staff and is part of the Finance and WHS teams with direct responsibility for specific areas in these portfolios. Karen comes with experience and qualifications in both industry and education.

The second half of Term 3 has been a busy time for Singleton High.

STAFF DEVELOPMENTOur staff have significantly benefited from a wide range of professional development opportunities, such as ALARM (A Learning And Response Model), improved communication and community strategies, details regarding the new HSC curriculum and innovative teaching strategies.

LMBR TRAININGLMBR (Learning Management and Business Reform) training continues and we’ve been fortunate in accessing experts to deliver training at Singleton High. Many of our executive have now completed this aspect of training.

SUBJECT SELECTIONSuccessful Subject selection evenings were held and both day and evening sessions were well attended.

Please ensure that subject selections have been completed so that students can have the best choices possible.

TOMMY’S DAYTommy’s Day was a resounding success once again. Staff, student and community commitment was outstanding, my sincere thanks goes to all those who participated. Special thanks to Hannah, Ethan and Bree who raised a significant amount of money through head shave and hair dyeing. See p14 for more photos.

OVERALL STUDENT NUMBERSOur student numbers have steadily increased since the start of the year.

Whilst this is pleasing as it affords us the resources to offer a wide variety of subjects it also means that we are now at capacity in many years and as such are limited in our capacity to take any out of zone enrolments (see our policy on p4 or on our website).

RATIONALEThis school’s local area is determined by the Department of Education and Training through a process involving consultation between Properties Directorate, the School Education Director and the Principal.

In accordance with the Education Reform Act 1990 this school will seek to ensure that every eligible child will have a place at Singleton High School if he or she chooses to enrol here. A child is defined by law as a person under 18.

VERIFICATION OF LOCAL RESIDENCYFor a student to be enrolled as a local placement, parents will be asked to provide 2 forms of proof that they live in the local area and that the child being enrolled also lives in the local area. Documentation could include a rental agreement, a rates notice, an electricity bill, a statement from Centrelink, a bank or building society statement etc.

NON LOCAL ENROLMENTSThe primary criteria for acceptance of non-local enrolments include the availability of appropriate staff and available accommodation within the school structure. The Department of Education and Training states that “No additional accommodation (permanent or demountable) will be provided to cater for increased enrolments resulting from non – local placements”

ACCOMMODATIONSingleton High has a ceiling based on the number of permanent classrooms.

ENROLMENT PANELThis school has an enrolment panel consisting of the Principal, Deputy Principal, staff member and a community member.

The Principal has the casting vote. The panel is responsible for developing and evaluating the criteria for non-local placement. The criteria will be consistent with DEC guidelines.

CRITERIA: NON LOCAL PLACEMENTIt is the decision of the enrolment panel that if accommodation and staff are available, significant criteria (not in priority order) for non-local enrolment will comprise the following:

• Commitment to learning• Academic performance and

achievements• Physical, emotional and medical needs

related to a student’s well being• Cultural achievements• Sporting achievements• Compassionate circumstances

• Proximity and access to school

WAITING LISTA waiting list for non-local applications seeking placement in year 7 and 11 will be established.

Expectations at Singleton High Schoolc l a s s r o u t i n e h o l i d a y s un i fo r m core va lues

• students stand in 2 lines outside of the classroom, taking hats off, preparing required equipment and placing electronic devices on silent and away before entering the room

• students will stop talking and listen when the teacher is addressing the class

• an out of class slip is given by the classroom teacher before a student leaves the classroom

• the lesson learning intention and success criteria are always displayed for students

• students stand behind desks, clear their work area, place rubbish in the bin and wait to be dismissed at the end of every lesson

As the holidays approach it is timely to remind students of our expectations this week

• there are meaningful and planned lessons on all week, including Friday

• students should be attending school as per usual

• students should be adhering to the class routine set out in the previous column

• students should be wearing the correct school uniform

• students should take some time in the holidays to consolidate and revise their notes to prepare for their end of year exams starting week 5

• every student is expected to wear the uniform with pride

• it helps teachers to distinguish between students and others

• it connects students to our learning environment and helps them to focus on learning

• it supports a sense of belonging to this school and its community

• students not in uniform are can’t go on non-essential curriculum activities, represent the school, feature at assemblies or practical subjects if safety is compromised

• if a student is unable to wear the uniform they must bring a note explaining the reason or see the Head Teacher Wellbeing

Our school’s core values for our students are:

• RESPECT

• RESPONSIBILITY

• PRIDE

• EXCELLENCE

DEVELOPING YOUNG LEADERS TOMMY’S DAYTommy’s Day evokes a lot of school pride and spirit every year. The SRC would like to congratulate the school on their enthusiasm in supporting Tommy’s Day. This year our school came together and raised a massive $7500. These funds are donated to the Singleton branch of the Cancer Council NSW.

This year we had the CAPA coordinated Talent Quest which raised a massive $1880 towards Tommy’s Day. The Talent Quest demonstrated our school’s positive encouragement towards their peers and the finale certainly got many of our students up and dancing.

Faculties also coordinated games, food stalls, and a silent disco. With a lot of courage, we had students Hannah (Y9) and Ethan (Y9) who raised funds by getting their hair shaved. Bree (Y7) also raised funds to dye her hair.

Overall, Tommy’s Day was very successful in bringing our school community together for a great cause, and one that is close to many of our hearts.

16/17 CAPTAINS’ FAREWELLWe want say a huge thank you to everyone! Thanks to all of the students and teachers for getting us to where we are today and for being great to work with. We have all had an amazing time working with our school community and are proud to say that we were part of Singleton High School. It was an absolute privilege to work alongside you all and to help to lead our wonderful school.

Thanks for all the great memories that we will be cherish forever, it has truly been a life changing experience. We’d also like to say a massive thank you to Ms Cowmeadow for being alongside us every step of the way and for being a massive support to us all.

We’d like to wish you all the best of luck into the future, not only our fellow Y12 students, but to the wider school, all students, teachers and administrative staff.

Thanks again for your continued support, goodbye and good luck! Love from the 16/17 school captains; Taylor, Kayse, Ella & Brad.

17/18 CAPTAINS ELECTEDThe school captains have been decided by our school for the coming year of 2017-2018.

Congratulations to Rodney Cerezo and Abbie Stewart who have been voted in as school captains.

Further congratulations to our incoming Vice Captains, Nick Watson and Kyah McBride.

The calibre of candidates for this year’s captains nominations was very high and the voting was close.

All the candidates conducted themselves with our core values of respect, pride, responsibility and excellence in learning.

EXCURSION TIMEStudents have been rewarded with an end of term excursion to The Wetlands Centre in Shortland. The excursion complimented lessons in Geography where students have been studying about natural environments.

Students were given the opportunity to engage in hands on fun activities that centred around native flora and fauna whilst also having the opportunity to engage in a Science based activity using microscopes.

All students had an amazing day and it was great to see them engaging in all activities that were presented. The day was a great success and we thank Mrs Gittoes for her organisation.

Students also had the opportunity to engage with another school’s support unit in Community Access activities. Mrs Parish, Miss Belton, Jayne and Jasmin supported students to travel to Maitland Grossmann High for a ‘Day in the Life’ of a student from a different high school.

All students displayed excellent manners, were polite and courteous, followed all expectations and listened attentively throughout the day.

Staff were impressed with their high levels of engagements and ability to show another school just how amazing students from Singleton High can be.

Students spent the day observing the Community Café, gardening, looking at classrooms and sharing a BBQ with students and staff from Maitland Grossmann. Another fabulous opportunity for students to shine!

COMMUNITY CAFÉThis term’s guest speaker was Michelle Burns, Adolescent and Family Counsellor Upper Hunter Youth Services. Café guests were treated to a delicious beef hamburger with fries and caramel/chocolate tarts for dessert.

Our faculty holds a Community Cafe toward the end of each term and we encourage the attendance of parents and carers of ALL students.

Whilst the guest speaker will usually be associated with providing information for our parents/carers of children with disability the café is an inclusive event. RSVP to Miss Coutts on 6571 1199 to reserve your place and bring along a gold coin donation.

Our guest speakers provide valuable information that has proved useful to many families and we encourage you to attend to build networking links and enjoy a lovely meal organised, prepared, cooked and served by students from all support classes.

AUTISM AWARENESSLast term our school supported ‘Autism Awareness’ with a ‘Light it up Blue’ day. On the day each class celebrated by watching autism related programs and completed a wide range of activities.

We also made cupcakes decorated with a blue theme. These cupcakes were sold to staff and students and the money raised supported our faculty to buy much needed autism specific resources.

We thank those staff that supported this day and look forward to celebrating it again with you in 2018.

CONGRATULATIONS HANNAHWe have had the pleasure of Miss Hannah Belton joining our team over the last couple of weeks. At the end of the term Hannah will finish her education teaching internship and we definitely look forward to her then being able to work casually at our school.

Our team would like to congratulate Hannah on this achievement. Hannah, it has been our absolute pleasure to have you in our faculty over the last 5 weeks, you have fitted in so easily and have made strong connections with staff and students. You are going to make one great teacher!!!

SMART ART INCLUDES YOUThe ‘Smart Art Includes You’ Challenge is an initiative of Ability Links NSW, a free, state government-funded program delivered across the Hunter Central Coast by the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW for schools to explore the concept of ‘inclusion’ and what inclusion means to us at Singleton High School.

Our school’s entry will be on display from the 4-30 of October. The official prize draw will be drawn on 6 October, keep your fingers crossed for our school as we would love to be able to spend the prize money on some inclusive large wooden games for the playground.

The artwork our school has produced demonstrates another wonderful achievement that our school can be extremely proud of – go check it out.

AYUMI & KANAEXCHANGE STUDENTS FROM TAKAHATA HIGH

“Hello I am Ayumi Watanabe and in Y11. I came from Takahata High School. I had never been abroad. When I came to Singleton, I got nervous. I thought this experience certainly would be good for me. I was happy because Singleton students have been kind to me. I want to stay in Singleton for a while longer. I want to make more memories with you all. I will come back here. I will never forget these 2 months. Thank you for telling me many things. I am looking forward to seeing you in Singleton again. Thank you so much.” “Hi guys! I am Kana Takahata and I am in Y11. I am a Japanese exchange student from Takahata. I came here in 2016 and stayed for 10 days. However, this year I was able to stay for the two-month exchange. It has been the best two months. Everyone has been very kind while teaching me English and about Australian culture. I want to come back to Singleton again. Actually, I WILL come back to Singleton again I promise! Thank you so much. I have been so happy for the past two months and I will never forget the lovely memories I have made.”

PEACEFUL GARDEN

Grieving is a natural reaction to a death or other significant loss.

Grief over the loss of a loved one is a process that is incorporated into the lives of survivors, forever changing their lives. The grief reaction typically includes expression of shock, disbelief, denial, anger and guilt.

The loss of a friend or classmate can cause a special form of grief for children and teens. Children and teens will need your help - provide them with information, understanding and comfort.

Follow normal household routines as much as is possible. This can provide a sense of comfort and safety to a grieving child.

Children express their reactions to a crisis in different ways. Children and teens may show anger, get upset easily, want to talk, or withdraw to make sense of it themselves. Younger children may be more open about their feelings than older children.

The following lists provide ideas for you as you support your child or teen.

A MEMORIAL FOR CODY HOWE

18

• learn about the grief process

• reassure them they’re not responsible

• be absolutely genuine and truthful

• show love and respect by being attentive

• encourage talking about feelings and about the deceased friend

• listen, no matter what!

• offer to attend the funeral

• allow crying - perhaps lots of crying

• expect laughter - happy memories

• offer opportunities for remembering

• expect that your presence may be important, while talking may be limited

• share some of your experience with loss, but keep the focus on the young person

• help to identify others to talk to

• encourage expression of feelings via poems, songs, letters, scrapbook.

• encourage thoughts and behaviours towards healing and growth

• don’t give too much advice

• don’t argue over trivial matters

• don’t minimize the loss

• don’t discourage the grieving process

• don’t assign new responsibilities too soon

SUPPORT GRIEVINGHOW TO SUPPORT GRIEVING YOUTH

A memorial garden for Cody Howe has been built by Miss Said’s Y12 Construction class as part of the major projects. The work ethic and commitment of the students was very inspiring. They have created an inviting space to sit under the trees that will be enjoyed by students for many years to come and will dedicate the garden to the memory of Cody Howe next term.
