contributed a message of good will and Mark Twain made a characteristic speech at a dinner given ast night by the British Schools and Universities Club at Delmoincos in honor 9f the mate Queen Victorias birthday which since her death has been celebrated throughout Englands I vast dominions as Empire Day Dr Walter Eyre Lambert president of the club which is composed exclu- sively ¬ of English and American alumni ofBritish universities and col lcgfS such as Eton Harrow and Rugby presided with Samuel L Clemens the guest of honor and the possessor of the degree of doctor of literature conferred upon him last year by the University of Oxford at hip right Dr Lambert atfer proposing rthe health of King Edward and of Presi- dent ¬ Roosevelt which were received with the singing of the British Ra- tional ¬ anthem and the Star Spangled Banner read a cablegram from Lord Knollys conveying a message of good- will to the club on the part of the King Ali present were then called upon to drink at silent toast to the memory of Queen Victoria and Dr Ciemlens was asked by Dr Lambert to give expression to an American appre- ciation of the monarch who reigned- for more than three score years over v j fhe British empire I Drl Clemens Speech Dr Clemens spoke in part as fol IOAVS You do me high honor indeed- In selecting me to speak for my coun try in this commemoration the birthday of that noble lady whose life was consecrated fo the virtues and the humanities and to the promotion of lofty ideals and was the model upon which many a humbler life was form cc and made beautiful while she lived end upon which many such lives will still be formed in the generations that are to comea life which finds its just image in the star which falls out cf its place in the sky and out of ex-
