Exploring differences, having fun and preparing for Year 2
Here are some ideas you can explore at home ready for Year 2 and will take you up to the Summer holidays! Have fun!
Week 1
Watch (or read if you have it) ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’ by Julia Donaldson
The Smeds and the Smoos story
Retell the story to a parent, sibling or even a teddy
bear!
Talk about this picture from the story ‘The Smeds
and the Smoos’ by Julia Donaldson.
Talking Prompts:
What can you tell me about this picture? How many red Smeds can you see? How many blue Smoos can you see?
Why is there a line of stones down the middle of the picture?
If you could be a Smed or Smoo which would you be? Why?
If you mixed red and blue what colour would you make?

There are lots of rhyming words in this story.
Can you think of a word that rhymes with ‘red’? Write a sentence about this picture. Send us a photo of your wonderful writing.
Don't forget to use your phonics knowledge, capital letters, finger spaces and full stops!
Choose one of the aliens: smed or smoo.
Can you write the words in the story that rhyme with smed or smoo?
In The Smeds and the Smoos, we meet lots of aliens - like the Klabs who walk on stilts
and the Scloopies who wear kilts. What might your alien look like?

The Smeds and the Smoos go on the Smoo rocket to some different planets.
Can you draw a new planet for the Smeds and the Smoos to visit? Write some
adjectives to describe it.

Week 2
Our Wonderful World
Geography
Can you make a mini model of a feature? It could be of a physical feature such as a tree or lake. Or it could be a human feature such as a house or a
supermarket.
Active Bodies and Minds: keeping healthy
Can you number some pots or containers and then try to throw a ball into each one, count up your total at the end. Maybe you
could turn it into a competition?
Time to Think
Can you think of a girl or boy's name, remember the friends in your class for
every letter of the alphabet?
Get creative
Can you find different materials to be able to make a phonics monster?
With lots of eyes, arms and legs?
Super Science
Can you go on a bug hunt? Which ones can you find? Remember to put them back in
their habitat!
Week 3
Get creative
Can you make a minion from a toilet roll?
Fun at Home
Can you find your house on google maps or google earth? Ask an adult to help you.
Music and play
Can you create your own dance routine and perform it to an audience?
The World Outside
Become a flower detective. How many different types of flower can you find? List
them.
Time to Think
List 5 ways that you can be a really helpful person in your home?
Week 4
Draw a picture of your Year 2 teacher and have a go at writing their name.
Write about what you are most looking forward to and what you would like to learn about in Year 2. Draw a picture of yourself
completing these activities.
Make a fortune teller and talk to an adult about the answers to your questions. Fortune Teller
Make a poster which tells your new teacher all about you!
You could include things you enjoy, like or dislike, favourite foods, games, tv shows,
colour, who is in your family, your friends...anything you think is important so
your new teacher knows all about you!
Write a letter to your new teacher and teaching assistant. Post it to the school to
make them smile! :-)
