NEW PROGRAM MODEL: FAITH IN ACTION A new program model, titled Faith in Action, is now in effect as the umbrella for Knights of Columbus-related activities beginning this fraternal year. Faith in Action replaces Surge...with Service, which was introduced nearly 50 years ago. This model is an evolution of the Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish initiative that was introduced in November 2015, and embodies a simplified overall program structure, featuring four instead of six categories. The Faith in Action model carries the Orders unchanged mission into the challenges of a changing world. It includes a strong call to action and focuses on programs in four categories: Faith, Family, Community and Life. The model reduces the requirements to earn the Columbian Award, which recognizes excellence in programming and charitable outreach, to completing four programs in each of the four categories. To earn the award, there is one required program in each category, designed to enrich the spiritual life of the council, family and community. These are: a Spiritual Reflection Program; Consecration to the Holy Family; Helping Hands, and a Novena for Life. All Supreme Council priority programs will continue with the addition of nine new recommended programs. Faith - Spiritual Reflection Program, Holy Hour, Sacramental Gifts; Family - Family Prayer Night, Good Friday Family Promotion; Community - Helping Hands; Life - Mass for People with Special Needs, Pregnancy Center Support, Novena for Life. Featured Programs: The goal of your council should be to achieve the coveted Star Council award, and one of the requirements is to submit the Columbian Award application (#SP-7). Supreme has selected 8 programs, and if you complete all of the requirements, it will fulfill ALL of the four activities needed for completion of an area. On the back of this page is listing of the Featured Programs, and the requirements for their completion. Service Program Awards: All councils are encouraged to submit an application for a State Service Program Award. Every council has one or two programs which members take an extra measure of pride in conducting. It doesnt matter how large or small you may feel your project is because every charitable program is important to those you help. One winner will be selected in each of the following categories: Faith; Community; Council; Family; and Life. State winners are then submitted on for the Supreme Contest. What Do You Tell A Man Who Asks You Why He Should Join the Knights of Columbus? Becoming a Knight of Columbus can transform your life. As a Knight, you have the opportunity to support your parish, give back to your community, grow in your faith and gain exclusive access to our top-rated insurance programs to protect your family. Plus you are joining a band of brothers, a network of men in communities around the world dedicated to doing good in the service of God and our neighbor. We are the “strong right arm” of the Catholic Church.

Retention The task of member retention begins as soon as the Admissions (First Degree) Ceremonial is conferred upon him. From the start, new members should be encouraged to be active and to participate in the Formation (Second Degree) and Knighthood (Third Degree) Ceremonials. Have his proposer act as a mentor to him - make sure he comes to meetings and is active in programs, and to go with him as he takes his advanced degrees.

Make sure the proposer and/or your admissions committee talks to him to find out what interests he has. Maybe he would like to help with Special Olympics or Youth activities, or maybe he is busy with his own children now and would prefer to only help with a fish fry or by distributing Tootsie Rolls. Don’t just assign him to clean up after the pancake breakfast because no one else wants to do it! It is everyone’s job to make him feel welcome, and especially that he is needed, by your council.

You should also encourage him to make an appointment to see your Field Agent, to discuss his family’s financial future.

Should it become necessary to suspend a member, please make sure you follow the proper procedures.

College Councils

Knights of Columbus College Councils play an important role in the Order’s mission by bringing college students in the Order and allowing a vehicle for young men to minister to the needs of their campus community.

College councils require additional attention, as the membership changes dramatically every year, with an almost complete change of membership every 4-5 years. The purpose is to have the vast majority of members be college students, and that college students should hold all elected offices. One requirement is that the Financial Secretary NOT be a student, and that he will hopefully have some ties to the college itself, but that isn’t necessary. He provides the stability for the council to continue on from year to year.

Is there a college in your area? If so, do they have a college council yet? If not, don’t you think the young Catholic men there would benefit from the leadership and ministries performed by the Knights?

Bernie Panther, College Council Chairman 310 West Walnut, Winfield, MO 63389 Phone: D&N-636-358-4302 Email: [email protected]

New Council Development The dream of Father Michael J. McGivney was to have a council in every parish. To better incorporate the various Catholic populations, this dream was expanded to include colleges and universities, Spanish-speaking parishes, and Eastern Rite churches. A Knights of Columbus presence in every place possible. That is our goal; that is our commitment.

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson reaffirmed this vision for parish-based councils when he outlined the “Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish” initiative. This program is designed to help our members and their families reflect the holiness of the universal Church. In promoting each family as a domestic church, the Knights of Columbus primarily seeks to integrate our members and their families more fully into the sacramental and social life of the parish.

As men of faith, Knights strive to make a difference by being part of the difference. Knights of Columbus councils offer Catholic men of honor and conviction the opportunity to be part of a truly unique service organization.

Is There a Parish in Your Area Which Would Benefit by having A Knights of Columbus

Council in it? If so please contact our New Council Development Chairman.

Chuck Paquette, New Council Development Chair 1911 NE. Gatewood Dr., Lee’s Summit, MO 64086 Phone: D&N-816-918-0833 E-mail: [email protected]

Round Tables A good way to establish a Knights of Columbus presence in a parish is through a Round Table, whose goal is:

“To actively engage Knights of Columbus members in order to aid the parish and sustain visible Catholic action through works of charity in every parish and mission throughout the Order, and in sustainable parishes to form the Round Table into a fully functioning Council.”

For any council which covers multiple parishes, the members which attend a particular parish are by default members of that parish’s round table. There are no additional dues, nor are any regular meetings held. There is only one coordinator needed who manages the efforts through consultation with the parish priest.

This is especially nice for smaller parishes as it gives them the opportunity to have an active Knights presence to support their priest and their parish, and gives men there the opportunity to be Knights with all of the benefits which come with membership.

Ceremonials Admission Degree (1

st Degree)

A new member gets his first look at the Knights of Columbus when he joins during the Admission Degree. The main principle of our Order - Charity - should be a lesson imparted to him in such a way that it makes an impression on him, and causes him to take this lesson to heart.

The best way an Admission Degree can be done is by a council team in which all parts are fully memorized, and they communicate the lesson of Charity with sincerity. The second best way is for a council to have their own team, but members may not have fully memorized their entire part, and read from the book. Every council is encouraged to have their own Admission Degree team, and to schedule a Degree to occur each month. If for some reason no candidates can be lined up to attend the Degree, the team should run through it anyway for practice. The other option for bringing a new brother Knight in is through the video provided by Supreme. This should be conducted at a council meeting, or when a group is gathered. It is not meant to be done privately, nor in any circumstances should a DVD be given to a prospective member and he is encouraged to watch it when he can! The video can also be used if you are short a member of your team and the DVD can be run to present his portion.

Formation Degree (2nd

Degree) The lesson of Unity is imparted to members through this degree. Working as one, we can accomplish much more than each of working independently. We would like for there to be a Formation Degree team in every District. If you are interested in starting one, please contact Tom Nelson.

Knighthood Degree (3rd

Degree) The lesson of Fraternity is imparted to members at this degree with the highlight being them Knighted as full Knights in our Order. We are a fraternity because we are brothers who share a Heavenly Father and do His works here on earth. We need to schedule Formation and Knighthood Degrees in each District on a frequent basis.

Membership 365 We cannot “take the summer off” in terms of ANY membership programs. Admission, Formation, and Knighthood Degrees need to be scheduled YEAR ROUND. Start Quick and finish Strong!

Orderwide Membership Drives The Supreme Council asks EVERY council to do a Fall and Spring Weekend Membership Drive:

Fall - October 6-7 or 13-14, 2018; Spring - TBA

Your District Deputy will contact you regarding setting up your church drives. If you need assistance, you can contact your DD or your Regional Membership Chairman.

Officer Training The success of a council is dependent upon effective leadership, and all officers knowing the responsibilities of the office they hold. The Missouri State Council has a program in place to inform officers, and future officers, on what is expected of them. Once everyone is aware of the responsibilities of their office, the council operation runs much smoother. Plus, once everyone is aware of the duties of each office, people are more willing to move up into higher offices. Contact Leadership Chairman Beussink to see how he can help in providing training.

Tim Beussink, Leadership Academy 240 Otto Lane, Gordonville, MO 63701

Phone: D&N-573-450-6466 Email: [email protected]

Financial Secretary Training The proper execution of duties by the Financial Secretary is also of vital importance to the success of a council. The FS is responsible for keeping accurate financial and membership records of the council. If any FS has any questions, or if a new FS is appointed, please contact FS Trainer Caffrey for assistance. He can help you with many things via a telephone call, but there are also a series of Regional trainers across the state which he can assign to work with you on Member Management, or on any other issue you may have.

Why The Knights Offer Insurance

In 1873, while seminarian Michael McGivney was studying for the priesthood, his father Patrick passed away. As money was no longer available for his tuition, he packed his belongings and returned home. Fortunately he received a scholarship from the then Diocese of Hartford so he was able to continue his studies through to his ordination.

Less than a decade later, Fr. McGivney was faced with a similar situation with one of his parishioners, Edward Downes, Jr. His father passed away and he too was forced to quit the seminary as he returned home to support his mother and his 12 siblings.

Fr. McGivney was unable to help Edward, but did become the legal guardian of Edward’s brother Alfred.

For these reasons Fr. McGivney knew that support of the widow and children of members was something he wanted to accomplish. In his own words, he said he wanted his Knights of Columbus to “unite the men of our Faith throughout the Diocese of Hartford, that we may thereby gain strength to aid each other in time of sickness; to provide for decent burial, and to render pecuniary assistance to the families of deceased members.”

Even though we live in a different period of time, families are still in need of financial protection. “From its small but promising beginnings in 1882, our insurance program has become a pillar of financial strength.”

Utilize your Field Agent - have him help you in recruiting efforts - have him hold an insurance benefits night to show members (and prospective members) what financial services Knights of Columbus Insurance offers.

Degrees

For those who qualify, the Certificate of Recognition (#4293) and the “Shining Armor” lapel pin (#1700) are available for order through the Supreme Supply Department.

Why not offer the Shining Armor Award challenge to all current First Degree members? Give them from July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019 to get these requirements done and then recognize them with this award.

Very Important Proposer

Religious Information Bureau “Our Faith Evangelized to the World”

I. What is The Religious Information Bureau? The Religious Information Bureau (R.I.B.) was founded several decades ago in order to help non-Catholics learn about the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church. Today the R.I.B. continues to help others learn more about our Church and its teachings through our partnership with Catholic Home Study (C.H.S.). Non-Catholics and Catholics might take the Home Study Courses through the C.H.S. in order to learn about Catholicism prior to joining the Church or to expand their knowledge of Church teachings and the Bible. They can also obtain informational pamphlets on various topics related to our Faith. Councils order these pamphlets through the C.H.S. office for display in their local parish and at community social events. R.I.B. also provides funding for advertising of the Home Study Courses in publications throughout the country and via the Internet for the rest of the world. All of these things help our Order’s evangelization efforts on behalf of our Church. We want as many people as possible to take advantage of these materials and services, but with more success comes more expenses. Your donations to the Religious Information Bureau are the key to the continued success of this Program. II. Our Goal for 2018-2019 is $285,000, and Everyone Can Help Us Reach this Goal We ask that every Knight support the Religious Information Bureau by giving at least $7.50 through his Council, as each Council is assigned a quota based on $7.50 per member. Each member of the Ladies Auxiliary is asked to give $3.75. Fourth Degree Assemblies, Columbian Squires, Columbus Girls, and Clown Clubs are asked to donate what they can to this Program. With 100% participation from the roughly 43,000 Knights in Missouri, we would raise $322,500. Add $15,000 from the Ladies Auxiliaries and the total grows to $337,500! III. How Councils and Members can Help Achieve our Goal

• Include the R.I.B. donation with your Council or Auxiliary dues notice. This is the easiest way to meet your quota.

• Hold a parish/community fundraiser and donate the proceeds to the R.I.B.

• Promote making a gift to the R.I.B. as part of member’s personal estate planning.

• Earn an annual $50 credit for your Council by displaying a R.I.B. Board at a public event. The application for the credit is on the following page and on the State Council’s web site.

• Encourage your parish to use the Home Study Courses and materials for R.C.I.A. classes and their youth and adult education programs.

• Use the R.I.B. materials at Council meetings. Encourage fellow Knights and others to review the pamphlets and sign up for the courses.

Family Activities Our Faith, Your Family

Brother Knights,

As with all of our programming, family activities are changing along with the transition to Faith in Action. Moreover, the formerly-known-as youth activities and their chairmen are now also Family Programs.

Our goal is the same: ours is a Catholic, family, fraternal, service Order, and my team focuses on the family part of that slogan, providing activities and recognition for families to pray, serve, play and grow together, now including through programs that engage our youth and build and reward academic and athletic skills. Family activities are how we support families, how we strengthen and build better families, how we teach and engage our families, how we encourage families to be alive and live the Catholic faith with joy and love for one another. They are how we attract young men with new families to our Order. Men of all ages who work long hours and come home don’t want to leave their families again to be with the Knights, they want to bring their families and be with the Knights. Bring your family with you to Knights’ activities and see how we make you a better husband and a better father, then join us, and we provide even more —the example of the many, many other friendly, faithful Catholic families across our state I’ve met as a consequence of being a Knight.

Please contact me or any Family Chairman for more information on any of these activities:

Coats for Kids

The Knights of Columbus developed the Coats for Kids program, which allows councils in Missouri the opportunity to purchase new winter coats for children at a discount and to distribute them to children in need in their local communities. Since Coats for Kids began in 2009, nearly 400,000 coats have been distributed.

Every Knights of Columbus council is eligible to participate in Coats for Kids. Coats can be purchased at a cost of $220 per 12-coat case, including shipping. All Coats should be ordered on Knightsgear. Where $220 is too much for a single Council, or where a Council might want to purchase a fractional case, Councils are asked to pool resources within their District or Region.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, November 23, 2018, is a common day for coat distributions, and it is encouraged for Councils and Council groups to use that day for their events. Councils and groups may collaborate with a local community agency to identify and invite famili es with youth who might need to a new coat. Consult with church, school, and community officials as you prepare your drive and be sure to publicize everything.

As a featured program, a council’s drive will fulfill all four Community Activity requirements for the Columbian Award by ordering and distributing a minimum of eight cases of coats. More information can be obtained by contacting Chairman John Myers.

Essay Contest

This year the State Council will be overseeing its own essay competition following the plan to rotate topics year to year. This contest is separate from the Supreme Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest. The State Essay Contest is open to all Catholic students and those attending Catholic institutions in grades 8 – 12. Essays will be judged at each individual grade level.

The topic for the 2018 – 2019 school year asks students to consider the saint they selected at confirmation, or to select a saint if confirmation saints are not chosen at a parti cular school, and describe: “What did you learn about this saint and how did this saint inspire you?”

More information, including an essay entry form to be included with each submission, will be placed on the state website, which will also be the channel for essay submissions. Do not send Council, Assembly, or District winners to Supreme. Questions should be sent to Chairman Dave Govero.

Submissions must be received via the online portal by 11:59 pm on Thursday, February 28, 2019. Essays must be a student’s original work; reflect the assigned theme and topic; be typed on 8½” × 11” paper, one sided, double spaced, with one-inch margins; be 500 – 750 words; and be submitted by the February 28 deadline. Only one entry per grade, per District will be accepted for State -level judging. All entries become the property of the Missouri Knights of Columbus and will not be returned.

The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Orderwide Food for Families Program. In the last fraternal year, 49 Missouri Councils

collected 53.7 tons of food, donated $77,519, and volunteered 15,388 hours at food agencies. For councils or assemblies, the Supreme Council will refund $100 for every $500 donated, or for every 1,000 pounds of food that a council contributes to a parish food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen - up to a maximum of $500 per council/assembly per fraternal year. Reported contributions of food and/or monetary donations are cumulative for the fraternal year. Units must submit the Food for Families Reimbursement Program form #10057 to receive the refund, and will also receive an attractive plaque recognizing their participation. Councils received $14,200 from Supreme Council in 2016.

Food for Families is the Featured Program for Family Activities. A Council that donates a minimum of 1,000 pounds of food and volunteers a minimum of 100 man-hours to the food agency fulfills all four of the Family Activity requirements for the Columbian Award. In 2017, 13 Councils received credit for completing the Featured Program. Questions about Food for Families? Contact Chairman Clancey Duttlinger.

Faith in Action

Starting in 2014, the Supreme Council started a concentrated suite of family programs to strengthen the family. Transferred to the new Faith in Action program, these programs continue to assist Councils to build programming that attracts, supports, and builds families by creating a place where each member of the family has an important role.

The Family Fully Alive includes monthly themes, meditations, projects and Scripture verses that can help you place God and the Catholic faith at the center of your family's lives. These

are contained in The Family Fully Alive program book #10162, for which the first 300 copies are free from the Supply Department. Additional materials are available on the web.

Family Week Knights of Columbus Family Week is commemorated during the week that includes the birth (Aug. 12) and death (Aug. 14) of Father McGivney. In 2018, this is August 12 – August 18. Councils should plan a family Mass, a picnic, a dinner, a prayer service or other activities that will promote and highlight both family interaction and the family focus of the Order. Open your program to nonmembers, prospects, parishioners, friends, priests, religious and everyone else in your community.

La Posada or Journey to the Inn The Posada or Journey to the Inn is a traditional Christmas celebration that Franciscan missionaries developed in America with the goal of introducing the faith. It continues to be popular throughout the southwestern United States and all of Latin America and is a rich tradition for Knights and their families to share. If your Council is not familiar with the Christmas Posada, the Supreme Council invites you to join this ancient observance that will open for you the deeper meaning of a joyful season. The Posada: An Advent & Christmas Celebration #9898, or in digital format at kofc.org, is available to help Councils understand the tradition. This booklet provides all that is needed to conduct a Christmas Posada with Councils or your family.

Consecration to the Holy Family Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through the personal struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles — and partly as a result of conquering them — families have great capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in Christ. To help families live out this joy of Christ, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has composed a new prayer through which families may come together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy Family. Every Council should invite families of their parish to offer this prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family at all Masses on the first Sunday after Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Family.

The Consecration to the Holy Family prayer card #10371 is also available free of charge in reasonable quantities. This is also a perfect program to do in coordination with the Fifth Sunday Rosary.

Family Prayer Night It can be a challenge to raise children in the faith without the support and companionship of other Catholic families. Family Prayer Night provides an opportunity for council members, their spouses and children, as well as other Catholic families, to come together regul arly for prayer, dinner and fellowship.

Good Friday Family Promotion Our Christian faith centers on Christ’s passion, death and resurrection, but attendance at Good Friday and Easter is declining. Now, through this promotion, Knights and their families wil l work with their pastor to create a campaign promoting the importance of Good Friday services. Knights will also take this opportunity to educate parish families about the plight of Christians living in the Holy Land today.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Then the righteous will answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?” And the King will answer, “Truly, I say to you, as you did this to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me.” - Matthew 25:35-40

Drive for Persons with Developmental Disabilities The weekend of October 5-7, we ask your council to participate in our 47th annual Drive by distributing Tootsie Rolls with the proceeds going to agencies which work with persons with developmental disabilities. One-half of the money raised goes to the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, with your council receiving the other half to support programs for those with special needs in your community.

Chairmen: Dave Bramman (East) and Roland Cretel, Jr. (West)

Special Olympics Missouri We as Knights continue our ongoing relationship with Special Olympics Missouri through donations of time, talents and treasures. If your council or assembly has not supported SOMO in the past, please make it a priority to do so this year. Attend a SOMO event, and I guarantee you will come back again and again!

Chairman: Lou Holtmann

Life Services Blood Drives: Can you think of anything more precious than giving the gift of life? Through sponsoring a blood

drive, you are giving the gift of life to your neighbors.

Agape House: We cannot simply forget our brothers and sisters who have been sent to prison and pretend

that they do not exist. We need to love and support them and their families.

American Wheelchair Mission: Through our partnership with the AWM, for as little as $150 you can give the precious gift of mobility to a person in need. Please consider hosting a “Wheelchair Sunday” drive this year.

Chairman: Matt Gray

Legislative/Publicity/Newsletter/MCC Liaison We are fortunate to live in a democracy. As Knights, it is important that we take part in our political process. We do this through our involvement with the Missouri Catholic Conference. It is as equally important to let people know what we do as the Missouri Knights of Columbus. We cannot let the Knights of Columbus be the best kept secret in Missouri.

Drive for Persons with Developmental Disabilities

Drive Goal = $750,000.00 October 5, 6, & 7, 2018*

(*Councils are asked to conduct their drive October 5-7; however, if there are special circumstances that your council cannot conduct its drive that weekend, the insurance purchased by the state council to cover the drive is effective every weekend in October.)

Thanks to your hard work, generosity, and dedication to the Drive, the Knights of Columbus

Developmental Center moved out of the hospital and into the second floor of the Cardinal Glennon

Children’s Foundation building in May of 2013. This new facility more than doubles the size of the center

from 4,200 sq. ft. to 10,500 sq. ft. It also has its own parking lot which is located just steps away from the

door. When the Center opened in 1982, it was served by a staff of 3; now the Center can boast of a staff

of 20, many of which are pictured to the left in front of the entrance to the new facility. As members of the Knights of Columbus we are committed to supporting organizations who are dedicated to the health, education and welfare of persons with developmental disabilities. This is highlighted each year by our “Drive for Persons with Developmental Disabilities” (formerly known as the “Tootsie Roll Drive,” and more recently as the “MR Drive”).

Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center

One-half of all proceeds collected in this annual drive go to support the Developmental Center which was started by the Missouri Knights in 1982.

Services:

The Center specializes in diagnosing and treating thousands of children afflicted with: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Delays, Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Prader-Willie Syndrome, Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder. This is done by a staff of Child Psychologists, Educational Diagnosticians, Social Workers, Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, Special Family Therapists, and special consultant “Higgins” (a Goldendoodle) the therapy dog. Other programs in place include: Parent Education, Developmental Screening, Professional Training and Developmental Education.

Turn-Around Funds

The other half of the proceeds collected goes back to your council to use to support local programs for persons with developmental disabilities. Over 230 different agencies across the state received support through these funds last year.

Turn-around fund request forms should be completed no later than June 30, 2019.

Councils who do not have a specific agency in their area which works with the developmentally

disabled are encouraged to request that their turn-around funds be donated to the Knights of

Columbus Developmental Center or to Special Olympics Missouri. You can indicate your

preference on your Developmental Disabilities Drive Disbursement Request Form.

Special Olympics Missouri

Whose Mission is . . . to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

This is the 50th Anniversary for Special Olympics! Since 1968, they have grown to be recognized as the leader in supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities- creating Unified activities for family participation, hosting Young Athlete Programs to get athletes ages 2-7 introduced to sports, teaching public speaking and job skills training through its Athlete Leadership Program, and serving as the world’s largest public health organization for individuals with intellectual disabilities through its Healthy Athlete Program. The competition begins locally, and extends to Area, District, Regional and State every year. Every 4 years there are USA Games and World Games.

$1.2 MILLION CHALLENGE The Missouri State Knights of Columbus have been challenged by SOMO to raise $1,200,000.00 over a six-year period that will conclude on June 30, 2020. These funds will be used for SOMO’s Capital Campaign for the new “Training for Life Campus” which is being built in Jefferson City. Upon completion in the Fall of 2018, it will be the only facility of its kind in the country, providing critically needed services and care. We need every Council to participate in order to ensure that we meet our goal. Bronze, Silver, Gold, Double Gold, and Platinum Opportunities are available. Please contact SOMO Partnership Manager Mary Niswonger, [email protected] to ensure your Council’s recognition or to coordinate a SOMO presentation for your Council/Parish.

In addition to the $1.2 million goal for the Training for Life Campus, we continue to support SOMO’s statewide programming. We have a $75,000 annual commitment to serve as an Official Statewide Sponsor of SOMO. Councils are recognized for their donations by being designated a Gold, Silver or Bronze level supporter.

The goal is to raise enough money that athletes will not have to stay home, because their families cannot afford to send them to Special Olympics events. Many of the athletes who participate are totally reliant on the financial support that SOMO provides to them. The State Council has made a pledge to give $75,000 to SOMO on an annual basis to be used for their statewide games; however, many councils also support SOMO events which take place in their area through donations of time and money. Please remember, that your council can designate its turnaround funds from the 3D Drive to go directly to Special Olympics Missouri.

The Supreme Council is offering each state a chance to receive up to $8,000 in matching funds that will be given based on the money and volunteer time donated by that particular jurisdiction. It is measured by filling out Form 4584 Partnership Profile Report with Special Olympics. Please complete and return the Form 4584 even if your council did not

support SOMO this year! This form is given to every council and can also be filled out online at www.mokofc.org. This matching money will give us additional funds we can use to support SOMO.

Special Olympics Medal Awards The top three Councils who financially contribute the most to SOMO/TLC (per member) will be recognized at the State Convention through receipt of a Gold, Silver or Bronze Olympic Medal award, which will have an actual Special Olympics medal incorporated into it. Councils can donate to their local Special Olympics area or a SOMO agency/team by sending a check to Columbian Charities with a note. If you want to have a check presentation with SOMO Athletes in your area, please contact your Chairman Lou Holtmann, [email protected], and he can assist in coordinating having them at your meeting. This is an excellent opportunity to show your community where and how your Tootsie Roll funds are used.

Life Activity Programs “Our Mission, DEFENDing Life”

Michael Tesmer, Life Director ● 701 Fairlane St. ● Harrisonville, MO 64701

(Cell) 816.918.9134 - (Home) 816.380.6147 ● Email: [email protected]

Welcome Grand Knights, Ladies Auxiliary Presidents and District Deputies to the Life Activities State Programs! Please read through this guide as our hope is that our programs will assist your Councils in Respecting and Protecting all Life from conception to death. Our theme for this year is “Our Mission, DEFENDing Life”.

In keeping with the Supreme Office changes from the Surge with Service programs to the Faith in Action programs, our previously named Respect Life Activities has been changed to Life Activities. Some new programs will be added to Life Activities along with the ones we have currently had In the past. Our Meet Life Campaign will continue with new direction after achieving our 5 year goal of 2 million and reducing abortions in half in Missouri by the year 2016 which was a great accomplishment. The Silver Rose will continue across Missouri starting on September 9th to October 10th so hopefully you will get a chance to view it. Marian Hour for Life program will continue with the aid of a new traveling icon to pray to Mary for Life. Roses for Life Program will continue as we draw awareness to our Church’s and also to our State Legislators in Missouri to the dignity of life. Some added programs recognized by the Supreme Faith in Action program update are some that we are already doing but will add additional focus to. Those are: Pregnancy Center Support, Marches for Life Council Support and the Ultrasound Program. New programs added to the Life program by Supreme are: Novena for Life, which we intend to add with our Roses for Life program in October but can be held at anytime, Mass’s for People with Special Needs, and support to the Christian Refuge Relief.

The “Featured” programs for Life Activities is Marches for Life and the Ultrasound Program. In the past, if you did one event in this area, you would get four or full credit for this program on your Columbian Award. Now, only two credits are awarded. So you will have to participate in two more areas in Life Activities, which should be easy to do.

The urgency of the threat to a culture of life cannot be misunderstood. Respect for the dignity of life demands a commitment to human rights across a broad spectrum. Both as Knights of Columbus and as followers of Christ. Saint John Paul II in 1995 stated “Catholics must be committed to the defense of life in all its stages and in every condition”. This is a call for all of us to do our part in our Mission of Defending Life!

Meet Life Campaign - The History………..

On July 16, 2011, the Missouri State Council Knights of Columbus announced the establishment of their “Meet Life” campaign. The goal of the campaign is to reduce the number of abortions performed in the State of Missouri by 50% by the end of the year 2016. The campaign was coordinated by the Knights of Columbus and included Vitae Founda-tion and In His Image Ultrasound. The mission of the “Meet Life” campaign is to reduce abortion in Missouri through the placement of ultrasound tech-nology in local Pregnancy Centers along with mass media advertising to direct women to those centers. These efforts would provide opportunities for mothers experiencing unplanned pregnancies to bond with their unborn babies and encourage hem to carry their babies to term. The steps to accomplish the goal were: 1. Place an ultrasound machine in every pregnancy resource center in the state that meets the criteria. 2. Create a marketing plan that brings abortion minded women to the pregnancy resource center. 3. Utilize the resources available to assist the pregnancy resource centers in their staff development. 4. Determine areas in the state of Missouri that are under served or not served by a resource center. 5. Raise $2,000,000 and supplement that through local giving and matching funds. 6. Work with the Councils and Auxiliaries to create long lasting relationships with their local centers. 7. Create a 10-year/ongoing plan to further eliminate abortion in the state of Missouri.

The Results …………

By the end of 2016, the goal of $2,000,000 was reached by donations over the 5 year campaign. An endowment with a beginning amount of $500,000 was established with a private donor donation. Although abortion numbers are hard to quantify, the number of abortions from the beginning of the campaign, which was 9234 a year was decreased to 7275 a year. By the end of 2017-2018 fraternal year, we will have placed 45 ultrasounds in pregnancy resource centers. A forty-five year review from Vitae shows these results: In 1990, there were over 2,100 abortion clinics and now there are only 800 remaining. Today there is around 2,700 Pregnancy Resource Centers and forty five years ago, when abortion became legal, less than 800. We may be one U.S. Supreme Court justice away from reversing Roe v. Wade. Advances in modern medicine such as ultrasound and in utero surgery have changed the way people think about unborn children. Instead of a “blob of cells”, these babies in the womb have become “tiny patients” and “preemies”. 72% of the American people support abortion restrictions. And, according to their most recent annual report, Planned Parenthood is now performing fewer abortions.

Meet Life Campaign - The Future………..

With the results above, you can see that there is some very promising results in stopping the abortion industry and saving lives. But we can’t stop now and need to go further in collecting funds for the Meet Life campaign. Many councils have give way above their pledge they made in 2011, just 7 years ago. Those councils also continue to work hard and making fund raising a priority for this program. There is other councils though that have not donated. I encourage those that have not to prayerfully consider helping this great cause for life. We need everybody’s help now more than ever. We expect that 3 new abortion facilities will be in operation this year in Missouri! The goal that we need each year going forward is around $200,000. We are working on endowments now so that might decrease over the years to come. The funds that are collected today, assist with placing ultrasounds in any new pregnancy center that qualifies with our partnership with Alliance for Life. Some monies are used to replace older ultrasounds that are in need of being replaced or some that need repairs. Funds also assist Vitae in their pregnancy center digital marketing efforts and with the pregnancy center webpage updates. Vitae is also critical in helping us with research in getting the abortion-determined women into a pregnancy center instead of a Planned Parenthood center. The easiest way to gather funds is with a Baby Bottle campaign. Some tips to do this is on the following page. An-other way is to have a fundraising event like a dinner, mouse race etc. You can also do a second collection with the Pastor's permission. We have some envelopes available that will help you with this. There is much more to come on the Meet Life campaign in the future so hope that you can help make the future an age were life is respected and honored! Contact Chairman Greg Elsey at [email protected] if you have any questions!

Missouri Knights of Columbus “MEET LIFE” Baby Bottle Campaign

The Missouri State Council Knights of Columbus have always been leaders in respecting the lives of the unborn. The Baby Bottle Campaign is an easy and effective way to raise funds for the Meet Life Campaign. We need every Council and Auxiliary to join us on this “MEET LIFE Baby Bottle Campaign. Guidelines for a successful fundraiser: First, meet with your pastor to gain his approval and to set a tentative date for the cam-

paign and share with him everything the Knights have done in the campaign and how suc-cessful we have been.

Request Baby Bottles if you do not have any. Contact Greg Elsey, meet life chairman to see where bottles are located and who the diocesan coordinator is that has them.

Select a Knight who is comfortable with public speaking to make a pulpit presentation. Place a full page ad in the church bulletin the week before the presentation. Make sure

you have several Knights to hand out bottles after Mass.

Distribute bottles to your church organizations (the Parish school, PSR, scouts, etc. and don’t forget the Ladies Auxiliary to assist!).

Use your bulletin for reminders to bring their bottles back on a designated date (around four weeks and have Knights in the back of church to receive the bottles.)

When the Campaign is over please return the bottles to your diocesan coordinator. Keep

in mind bottles will continue to trickle in so make a plan to get remaining funds turned in. Make your check payable to “Columbian Charities” and mail to Columbian Charities treas-

urer Ralph Cupelli at 6 Circle Lane, Kirksville, MO 63501. Be sure to mention what Coun-cil, Assembly or Auxiliary the monies are coming from and designate funds go to the Meet Life Campaign. Be sure to email Greg Elsey at [email protected] that you are sending in funds and let him know your Council, Assembly or Auxiliary number and information.

If you have any questions or need help with your campaign please contact Meet Life Chairman Greg Elsey at 417-861-1444 or e-mail [email protected]. Statements from Meet Life Pregnancy Help Center Directors for motivation! “We have been incredibly blessed by the most recent Meet Life Campaign. This Campaign has been so effective in reaching the abortion-minded women and getting them in our clinic door” Sony Ride, Executive Director, Parkville Women’s Center “The research-based website you put together for us has really increased the number of abor-tion-minded calls. We’ve seen a great increase in the number of abortion-minded clients that are texting, calling and emailing” Gary Smith, Executive Director, Hand ‘N Hand in Barnhart

One Life, One Rose

Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run The Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose has been a Knights of Columbus tradition for 58 years. In 1960, groups of Columbian Squires in Mexico, Canada and the United States decided to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe by carry-ing a rose across North America from Canada to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. In 2001 Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, at the 119th Supreme Council Meeting in Toronto, addressed the effort in culture of life terms, referring to the Our Lady of Guadalupe - One Life, One Rose Program. He urged that it be expanded to every North American jurisdiction. In recent years the program has expanded to eight silver roses traveling the western, central, and eastern corri-dors of North America, with Knights of Columbus from Canada to Mexico carrying the roses from destination to destination, and finally to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. Every stop along the route of the Silver Rose Pilgrimage is an occasion for prayer and spiritual renewal centered on the rosary. English, French and Spanish booklets containing recommended prayers, scripture readings and a litany accompany the Silver Rose. The Silver Rose for our area will be following Route 3 and will enter Missouri on September 9th from Illinois and leave on October 10th through Arkansas. Silver Rose Chairman John Clarke has the schedule and will be alerting the District Deputies on the dates and times that they will be having the Silver Rose available for Council events. Contact John Clarke by email at [email protected].

Marian Hour Devotion for Life The Supreme Council would like every Council to hold a Marian Hour of Prayer Service for Life this year. Here are the suggested steps involved in setting one up. 1.) Contact your Council chaplain or pastor to schedule the prayer service. 2.) Pick a place to hold it (a church is preferred but you may use your Council hall or meeting area). 3.) Select a date and time that is convenient for the chaplain and for most members. 4.) Plan a companion event (a breakfast, picnic, banquet, membership drive etc.) to be held in conjunction with the service. 5.) Promote your event through your council newsletter, parish bulletin, diocesan newspaper, etc. 6.) After holding your prayer ser-

vice, please make a report on the event and send it to Chair-man John Clarke.

The Supreme office does provide an icon display, including Marian prayer books, that will help assist you and we hope to have the new one soon. Once the icon has arrived, a schedule will be developed for each District Deputy. Contact Chairman John Clarke or your District Deputy with ques-tions.

Novena for Life New Supreme Program

The Knights will come together through both public and private acts of prayer to lead their communities in the spiritual battle to establish a culture of life in our nations. The protection of life is a sustained prayer intention of the Church and, in particular, of the Knights of Columbus. At set times of the year, a council can promote a nove-na, which is nine days of sustained prayer, to build up a culture of life in our parishes, in our homes, and in the wider community via communal gatherings and promotional efforts. These novenas could precede or end major feast days or pro-life events. As a State Program, we are encouraging you to do your Novena for Life sometime in conjunction with your Ros-es for Life in October. Novena examples can be found on the Supreme or Catholic websites or as simple as recit-ing the Rosary.

Mass for People with Special Needs (New Supreme Program)

Culture of Life is not simply about the beginning stages of Life; it is a commitment to affirm and defend life in all its stages and in every condition. A Knights of Columbus sponsored Mass, conducted annually for people with special needs, is an opportunity to welcome individuals or families who might not normally feel comfortable attending regularly scheduled Mass. Those with special needs are living icons of the love of Christ in the world and must be welcomed fully into a parish community. Physical or social barriers may dissuade some people from attending Mass. Family member anxiety may keep them from bringing a loved one out of concerns of disrupting the Mass or, unfortunately, even because they may not feel welcome. A dedicated Mass may be the first of many steps toward integrating people with special needs into weekly or even daily Mass as well as sacraments and other aspects of parish life. Holding this Mass sends the message that all of God’s children are welcome under the parish roof and that every person is an integral part of the parish family.

Christian Refuge Relief (New Supreme Program)

“Whether at home or abroad, charity is our Order’s first principle and the basis for all we do as brother Knights. It is the tangible way that we live out that spirit of fraternity and “missionary discipleship” to which Pope Francis has called us.” - Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. The message from Supreme Knight Carl Anderson is clear and that we need to look at ways all over the world that are in need. Prayers and financial support is needed for many Christian relief programs that the Supreme Council is supporting. Please try to do your part as a Council, Auxiliary or Assembly. Details are available on the Supreme Council website at kofc.org.

Marches for Life (New Supreme Program)

This program is one of the Featured programs that will get you two credits on the Columbian Award. Many Councils throughout Missouri support the March for Life. Either by attending a March for Life, providing financial support for transportation or supervising a group for a March for Life. Your Diocesan Office will be able to give you lots of areas to help in if you are not already supporting a March.

Ultrasound Program (New Supreme Program)

This program is also one of the Featured programs that will get you two credits on the Columbian Award. The Supreme Ultrasound initiative, where Supreme pays half of a ultrasound is critical in our Meet Live program. If your Council is specifically gathering donations for a ultrasound for a pregnancy resource center, than you can count this double credit. All of our ultrasounds in Missouri are qualified by Alliance for Life and have to pass a strict criteria by them and the Diocese. Make sure you contact me at [email protected] to verify your preg-nancy resource center qualifies.

Pregnancy Center Support (New Supreme Program)

This program is also one that a lot of Councils in Missouri participate in already. If you need help finding a Pregnancy Center in your area, contact either myself at [email protected] or the Meet Life Chairman at [email protected] and we will find one in your area. There are many ways you can help support the center. Just ask and they will tell you! A lot of them need baby supplies and probably volunteer time. Some need help with updating equipment like computers and phones. Most have a Walk for Life as well and welcome the Knights participation and financial support.
