simply known as the Oilfield Bible.
T he book derives its name from its original founders: Burl Self and John Massey. It
dates back to 1947. The history and background of the Burmass has become part of the legend and lore of the Permian Basin itself. There was the hotelier in the
panhandle who would not extend credit to any oil companies unless he could find them listed in the Burmass. It was his equivalent of Dun & Bradstreet. There was the clothier in Hong Kong who sought out the Burmass’ incomparable database because he aimed to market his wares to successful Texas and New Mexico oilmen. The book that was once produced in the back room of a gas station on Wall Street in Midland, Texas, is now a multimedia franchise, a digital-and-print compendium of all things Permian.
It’s a regional best-seller, now gone to a color format and a cleaner, easier-to-read presentation. Listings are still free, though any listee can upgrade to a paid listing that will mean added marketing clout.
The Burmass Directory is the sister publication of another industry-leading product:
Permian Basin Oil and Gas magazine, also known as PBOG.
