POLICE UPDATE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE FIVE ACTON SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAMS VOL2 NO1 AUG 2018 _______________________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome to the first issue of the revamped monthly Acton Police Update.

As you can see this new publication will still cover the five wards of Acton, and will still, of course, cover the general Neighbourhood Police issues which are relevant to everyone.

We will continue to report on some of the daily interaction between officers and residents, plus

offer detailed crime prevention advice and the dates and venues where you can meet the officers face to face to discuss local issues.

After the recent reorganization of Borough Policing, there has been a few positive changes to

SNT Ward personnel, although each ward still has two dedicated constables and one dedicated PCSO.

If you have any comments or suggestions please contact the editor, whose details appear at the end of this newsletter.

near restaurants and pubs. It’s important to remember that criminals will steal absolutely anything that’s visible in your car or van, even the empty carrier bag on your front seat or the pile of coins you have kept especially for parking meters. The team have put up warning signs in the most susceptible areas but ask you to be especially vigilant. Most people who call at your home will be genuine. However, occasionally people may turn up unannounced with the intention of trying to trick their way into your home. Known as distraction burglars, doorstep thieves or bogus callers, these dishonest people try to get into homes by distraction to steal money or valuables. They may also have an accomplice who will seek to gain entry to your home from the back while the other keeps you occupied at the front door. For this reason you should always be alert and cautious when someone you do not know calls at your door. # Do not open your door to unexpected callers. # Check through a spy hole or window to see who it is. . # Speak to them through the door, an intercom or a window. # Install an outside light. # Never be pressured into opening the door…if in doubt keep them out.

# If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first and keep it on while you talk to the person on the doorstep. If you have not already got a door bar or chain fitted, consider getting one. # Do not accept packages for neighbours unless they have asked you to. # Do not let strangers in on behalf of your neighbours . # Do not keep large amounts of money in your home.. # If someone you do not know asks you to help them outside the house, only go if you have someone else with you. ESTABLISHING THE IDENTITY OF CALLERS If someone who looks official calls at your door, always ask to see their identity card. All genuine callers will carry one and you should not invite them in or converse with them if they cannot produce one. Checking Identity Cards # Close the door and lock it while you check the card inside. # Look to see if they look like the photograph on the card. If the card does not have a photograph, then it is not a genuine ID card. # Carefully check the details on the card, even if they have a pre-arranged appointment. # Check if the name on the Identity Card is the same as that on your letter or the one you were given over the phone. # If you are still unsure, phone the company to check the identity of the caller. # Remember that people may have correct information about you which they have obtained illegally. It is therefore extremely important to establish your callers identity beyond any doubt. Passwords All major gas, electricity and water suppliers now have a password system for older and vulnerable customers. You can give your supplier a word which is confidential to you and the company. When the representative calls they can tell the customer the password to prove that they are genuine. Contact the companies involved for more details.

Bogus Workmen Sometimes people will call at your door and say they are builders or gardeners working in your area. They may try to carry out unnecessary repairs on your home and can be extremely persistent and convincing. Never open the door to a workman that you are not expecting. If a workman says you need repairs, tell them that you will get some quotes from other companies before deciding. Always use a reputable company before deciding. Always use a reputable company to carry out repairs or work on your property and never, ever pay upfront. If you think you have had details with a bogus trader, contact Consumer direct on 08454 040506 for information about your legal rights and advice on how to resolve your complaint. You should also contact Action Fraud, the Police National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Centre by telephoning 0300 123 2040, or contacting tem on line at www.actionfraud.police.uk/contact-us XXACTON CENTRAL WARD XXXXXXXX Telephone: 0208 721 2921 E-mail [email protected] Twitter @MPSActonCentral See the Acton Central Team on Facebook The Acton Central Team have been busy dealing with issues which have been worrying their residents. These issues include drug dealing in a couple of locations and graffiti in the Churchfield Road area. Officers did a leaflet drop to try and gain intelligence regarding the drug dealing, which proved very successful. The Team are currently working with the West Area Gangs Unit and Ealing Council, and are planning Warrants to enter and search specific residences. They are also working with Park Guard personnel, ably supported by the ASB Team, to patrol areas affected by said dealing As far as the graffiti goes, over 40 instances of criminal damage have been reported to Ealing Council. Officers have investigated and found the person they think is responsible. We will report on the outcome in future issues of this publication.

The Team also dealt with an illegal travellers site. The picture below shows some of the rubbish they left behind. This fly tipping gave the officers the grounds to evict the travellers.

Over the last month officers have issued numerous traffic tickets including a learner driving using a mobile AND the instructor. If an instructor is teaching someone, it is also illegal for them to use a mobile. Officers also visited the West Acton Primary School Fete In a police response car, much to the delight of young children…

On another occasion officers drove to Essex on behalf of Acton CID to execute a Warrant in order to recover a Pug dog that had been stolen in Acton as part of a residential burglary.

Snuggles was finally recovered after a very long day and reunited with its understandably grateful (and emotional) owner. The story and video were posted on the West Area Facebook page and was viewed over 20,000 times in under three hours!

OWL COMES TO ACTON! By Suzanne Tanswell Suzanne is the volunteer driving force behind OWL and Neighbourhood Watch for all Ealing. OWL is the latest way to interact with your local police and Neighbourhood Watch. OWL.

Working in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch and with an emphasis on positive interaction between yourselves and your local police, it acts as a serious deterrent to burglars, car thieves and dishonest door to door callers. OWL is being used by the Police in the BCU West Area which includes Ealing, Hillingdon and Hounslow, and by all the Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators across the three boroughs. OWL enables the Police and Neighbourhood Watch to interact with individual users, streets, groups of streets, individual wards or across whole boroughs, allowing targeted relevant information to be shared. It can be accurately targeted to very specific locations, enabling relevant messages to reach exactly the right people. How useful it has become can be demonstrated by a case when a child went missing last week.

The police hub for the BCU selected the target area and circulated it on the OWL map, with the Chiswick High Road, where the child was last seen, at the centre and choosing a radius of approximately three miles. Everyone registered on OWL within this area received an e mail and helped the police search. After 11 minutes little Donel Malumba was found safe and well

Following a recent burglary in Hillingdon, a message was circulated using OWL giving details of a vehicle stolen during the burglary. As a direct result of the message, a local resident was able to provide useful CCTV images, which helped police understand the time of the burglary and the direction of travel of the stolen car. This crucial information focused police action, leading to the recovery of the stolen vehicle and the arrest of three individuals. A stolen vehicle (a brand new Tesla) was spotted by OWL member on his way to work, 8 hours after being stolen and 5 hours after posting on OWL. The vehicle has now been recovered and the very happy owner would like to thank everyone involved. These incidents underpin the benefit of OWL by getting information out promptly to residents. Residents who have been made aware of Crime Updates have also been given the chance to protect themselves and their vulnerable neighbours, to become more vigilant, and share the required intelligence with the Police Since its launch on June 13th, there has been over 4000 registrations in the BCU as a whole including 2000 from Ealing Borough. Signing up is free to www.owl.co.uk OWL is GDPR compliant and is the only system of its kind approved by Secured By Design. OWL is also CESG-approved. CESG is part of the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) Help us spread the word and encourage everyone you know to sign in. XXHANGER HILL WARDXXXXXXXXXXX Telephone: 0208 721 2947 E Mail: [email protected] Twitter MPSHangerHill See the Hanger Hill Team on Facebook The Hanger Hill Team have been busy organizing more Community Road Watch Events in conjunction with the Safer Transport Team. These events help promote Community Cohesion as well as encouraging motorists to slow down on minor congested roads where more often than not the speed limit is 20mph.

Officers attended a Travellers encampment in Fox Wood. The Travellers have since been evicted leaving behind a huge amount of rubbish plus significant damaged fencing. The team also executed a drugs warrant after local residents had provided information regarding drug dealing from a specific address. Information like this is always welcome so if you have noticed anything suspicious please let the team know. They will investigate all the information given to them and act if appropriate. Officers have kept in close contact with the local primary school and they continue to monitor parking issues. It is very dangerous to park outside a primary school at the

beginning or the end of the school day and yet people still continue to do it. “ I’ll only be a couple of minutes..” is often said… Unfortunately, and within that

small space of time, a parents estate car could obstruct the vision of a 4ft eight year old trying to cross the road in a hurry… The team have organized a meeting between Councillor Morrisey to discuss preventative measures. The Team also attended the Council Ward Forum where they gave took part in a question and answer session and gave a report about recent police activity.. They also attended the Safer Neighbourhood Annual General Meeting. FORTHCOMING EVENTS Contact point. XXEAST ACTON WARDXXXXXXXXXXX Telephone : 0208 721 2708 E Mail: [email protected] Twitter @MPSEastActon See the East Acton Team on Facebook The East Acton Team have been busy on many fronts in the last few weeks. They have been patrolling the Grand Union Canal cycle path to try and stop some of the dangerous cycling that has been taking place thereabouts. This is actually one of their Ward Promises. Ward Promises, you might remember, are a set of objectives agreed between the police and the SNT Ward Panel to address specific ongoing problems in the area. They also were very visible at the Acton Carnival on July 14th and regularly meet up with residents at their Cuppa with a Copper sessions at the Café in Acton Park. They also attended the Acton Park Run on July 15th. In the last month they have been coming down hard on the aggressive beggars and the vagrancy in Old Oak Common Lane. They have also had meetings with Fred Williams from Ealing Council to discuss the next moves to deal with the misuse of Disabled Blue Badges. Consequently they have held an enforcement operation on Coronation Road on Thursday 27th July. They have also been talking to businesses on Mansfield Road with regard to nuisance bikers and also making contact with all the various businesses in Park Royal. Working with the Safer Schools Officer, the Team have been able to identify the local youths causing anti social behaviour in McDonalds in the High Street. These youths have been severely reprimanded. Officers have distributed Crime Prevention posters in the Atlas Road area and the instances of Theft from Motor Vehicles in the area seem to have been eliminated. XXSOUTH ACTON WARDXXXXXXXXXX Telephone: 0208 649 3574 E Mail: [email protected] Twitter @MPSSouthActon See the South Acton Team on Facebook The South Acton Team have had some impressive results from their concerted efforts against Anti Social Behaviour on their ward. Working with Ealing Council they have obtained an emergency civil injunction on a senior gang member (Officers spent two days actually trying to locate the gentleman !) The Team also worked hard to achieve a six month custodial sentence against another regular offender. They have also had a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) approved against him, and are currently pursuing another one against another youth. Ward Officers have attended a great many meetings with the A2 Dominion Housing Association and Ealing Council with regards to a problem tenant. This has resulted in an injunction being taken out against them. They have also conducted Weapons Sweeps in numerous locations throughout the ward. Weapons Sweeps are a vital tool in the fight against ASB. Criminals occasionally hide weapons so they do not have to carry them and to make them accessible if and when needed. Officers pick a particular area and thoroughly search it, including bins and the undergrowth. These Sweeps occasionally come up trumps and in the last two months two dangerous knives have been found and disposed of. The Team are currently tackling Anti Social Behaviour in Benjamin House and Crown Street while working on four neighbour disputes South Acton Ward Officers Sergeant Ramone Marcelle PC Rachel Sullivan PC Nick Bones XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
