19 SEPTEMBER 2021 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

Remember the past with gra tude …

8 September 2021 was a day to remember for 8:00 A.M. Mass-goers at Saint Catherine of Sienna in Franklin Square. United with Mass-goers around the world, the Church in Franklin Square solemnly remembered the Na vity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Na vity of Mary is one of only three “birthdays” recognized in the Liturgical Calendar (ARCOLEO – Advent, Redeemer, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, Easter, Ordinary Time). The other two being: Saint John the Bap st (24 June) and of course the Lord (25 December). And while “crowning ceremonies” are more commonly associated with the Month of May (dedicated as it is to the Blessed Virgin Mary), it was decided that this year, as a sign of the new birth being experienced by the Church in Franklin Square, a crowning ceremony would take place on the Rectory front lawn.

Look forward to the future with confidence …

The joyful celebra on of this year’s Na vity of the Blessed Virgin Mary will not only help provide the Church in Franklin Square with the confidence we need to joyfully celebrate the upcoming remembrance of the Lord’s Na vity/Christmas (25 December), but even as we speak it is giving “red light stoppers” on New Hyde Park Road something to talk about! Yes joyfully, no ma er what comes our way in Sienna Square, Franklin Square, or anywhere else because of Who came forth from the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Immanuel/God with us/Jesus!

Live the present with enthusiasm …

Because the Word became flesh, was crucified, died, was buried, rose from the dead, and is with us always, the present circumstances of sickness, suffering, dying, and death that have given birth to a universal pandemic of fear will not have the final say. Just as sickness, suffering, dying, and death was not the end for Jesus, it will not be the end for those who live through Him, with Him, and in Him.

OUR SPECIAL FEASTS OF THE WEEK (WITH HELP FROM THE ROMAN MISSAL)

SAINT ANDREW KIM TAEGON AND COMPANIONS

(MEMORIAL: 20 SEPTEMBER)

O God, who have been pleased to increase Your adopted children in all the world,

and who made the blood of the Martyrs St. Andrews Kim Taegon and his companions

a most frui ul seed of Chris ans, grant that we may be defended by their help

and profit always from their example. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever. Amen.

SAINT MATTHEW (FEAST: 15 SEPTEMBER)

O God, who with untold mercy were pleased to chose as an Apostle

Saint Ma hew, the tax collector, grant that, sustained by his example and interces-sion, we may merit to hold firm in following you.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever. Amen.

SAINT PIUS OF PEITRELCINA (MEMORIAL: 23 SEPTEMBER)

Almighty ever-living God, who by a singular grace, gave the Priest Saint Pius a share in the Cross of Your

Son and, by means of his ministry, renewed the wonders of Your mercy, grant that

through his intercession we may be united constantly to the sufferings of Christ, and

so brought happily to the glory of the resurrec on. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever. Amen.

According to Pope Francis, “Saints are not supermen and neither are they perfect. They lived normal lives marked by sadness and joy, hardships and hopes, before reaching the glory of Heaven….; they dedicated their life to serving others, ..., spreading joy and peace.” Celebrate the lives of Saints this week, consider a ending Holy Mass on their Feast Days, and/or offering the following prayers taken from the Roman Missal:

9-11 A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions, who gather today at this site, . . .

Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all. AMEN.

Above prayer of Pope Benedict XVI at Ground Zero New York, 20 April 2008, expresses the thoughts and feelings in the hearts of many over the past week. Last Sunday, September 12th, hundreds gath-ered at Franklin Square 9-11 Memorial. Families of those lost, friends and neighbors; many are parishioners of Saint Catherine of Sienna Parish.

The flag unfurled high above as members of the FS&M Fire Department, dignitaries including Rev. Douglas Arcoleo, our pastor, local elected officials and visi ng members of other fire departments in Nassau County were present. On the grounds by the Gazebo were 13 flags placed around the base of a tree honoring those lost in Afghanistan just recently.

The FS&M FD Master of Ceremonies, John Novella, (SCS parishioner) welcomed everyone; the Chief of FS&M FD, Dominic Labianca (also a SCS parishioner) shared warm words on the special day. Our Pastor was keynote speaker and closing prayer was led by Deacon Doug Ferriero, Chaplain of FS&M Fire Department (family SCS parishioners).

Roses (26) were placed on the 9-11 steel monument honoring each lost by a family member, member of FS&M FD, local fire departments, NYPD, NCPD, EMS, PAPD and more. The granite stone at the site with the towers was previously blessed and placed years prior to the steel by SCS Pastor Rev. Thomas Groenewold.

Fr. Arcoleo, in his closing, shared the words of Pope St. John Paul II: "Remember the past with gratitude, live the present with enthusiasm, look forward to the future with confidence". He asked all to reflect and pray daily.

Let us never forget!

What is a Mass Intention? When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions: 1) to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church; 2) to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church; 3) to offer the Mass for a particular intention of an individual for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. The tradition of offering Masses for others, originates in the very early Church. (Canon 946)

The Christian faithful who give an offering to apply the Mass for their intention contribute to the good of the Church and by that offering share its concern to support its ministers and works (Canon 946). By offering the celebration of the Eucharist—the Mass for a particular person or intention the priest applies special graces from God upon the person or intention. The effects of the Mass bring certain fruits upon the whole Church — to the living faithful as well as the poor souls in purgatory. For this reason, in the Eucharistic Prayer a special mention is made for both the living and the dead.

Mass Intentions may be obtained 3 different ways. All accompanied with a Mass Card (simple or ornate) based on stipend. We accept cash, check or credit card.

Visit Welcome Desk during its reg-ular hours, Wednesdays 1:00PM to 5:00PM or Saturdays 9:00AM to 12 Noon. Your choice of date and Mass based on availability.

Call Parish Office (516) 352-0146 Ext. 109 and use a Credit Card to secure your Mass Intention for an available Mass.

By Mail send request and include Date, Time and Intention; enclose a check payable to Saint Catherine of Sienna R.C. Church for an offering of $20 per intention.

Give a gift of prayer for a loved one, deceased or living. Have Mass celebrated “in memory of” a relative or friend; or “in honor of” a birthday, anniversary or special occasion. Our Parish Family praying together for your loved one or your intention is part of the celebration of the Eucharist—the Mass.

For your convenience we list those Masses

still available through November

as of 9/10/2021

Mass is the central act of worship in the life of a Catholic. Going to Mass is about spending time with God, but also receiving His graces. The role of the participants is of great importance; not as though there would be no Mass without a congregation but because the people's "full, active and conscious participation will involve them in both body and soul and will inspire them with faith, hope and charity." The more active this participation, the more glory is given to God and the more grace is bestowed not only on the Church (Church is the People) but on all the members of the human race.

Mass in our parish is celebrated in three sacred spaces — Saint Catherine of Sienna R.C. Church and Saint Catherine of Sienna Chapel, Sienna Center in Franklin Square and at Saint Vincent DePaul in Elmont. Mass is celebrated on weekdays and weekends; visit our website for Mass Schedule at www.stcatherineofsienna.org.

Page 10: XXV S ®Ä O T

On Wednesday, September 8th, parishioners gathered for Mass to celebrate of the Na vity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. All raised their voices in song with entrance hymn Immaculate Mary and at recessional Hail Holy Queen. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Vincent Ribino, OFM.

Following Mass the faithful proceeded outside for a Prayer Service led by Fr. Vincent. A parishioner donated a crown of flowers to be placed on our statue of Mary in the gro o in front of the rectory; a young parishioner in a endance placed the crown of flowers with some assistance from our pastor Fr. Arcoleo.

Last year due to CoVid19 we were not together. For decades parishioners and friends gathered for Mass to celebrate the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Raising voices in song, par cipa ng in processions, a ending breakfast recep ons, and with recita on of the Rosary. It was a joyful day to be able to be together again.

The Bible doesn’t say anything about Mary’s birth, but we know that she was born. Like all parents, Mary’s parents—we call them Joachim and Ann—probably took one look at their daughter and knew she was special. Next to the birth of Jesus, Mary’s birth offers the greatest possible happiness to the world. Each

me we celebrate her birth, we can confidently hope for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world at large. Mary was a disciple of Jesus Christ and we too are His disciples. Let us do what Mary did and bring Jesus into the world through out words and ac ons. God has created each of us with love and a call to something special in life. Let us show respect and concern for one another; pray for peace and unity daily.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY 2021 Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each baptized person plays in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Often catechists are commissioned for ministry. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. This year the theme is “Say the Word and My Soul Shall Be Healed.” When our souls heal, all heals, despite our suffering.

Page 11: XXV S ®Ä O T

Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) supports programs that assist in the formation of our faith, care for those who are hungry and in need, and build the Kingdom of God in our community and across Long Island. It is our annual giving as a Parish Family in helping our parish meet its needs directly, helping others in both Franklin Square and Elmont, and many neighbors throughout the island.

CMA and your support allows us to be instruments of Dramatic Missionary Growth, disciples of Christ, reaching out to our young people, seniors, strangers, homeless, veterans, and those in need. It also supports the continued formation of our children, adults, seminarians, deacons, priests and volunteers.

Our parish reaps direct benefit through the DRVC Parish Rebate Program and enables us to continue our ministry in Franklin Square and Elmont to find the best ways to guide and pass on our faith to our parishioners, families, neighbors and friends.
