Topic: Your Empowerment To Design Speaker: Aleksandra Rotar Rose, dean, NICC International College of Design Takeaways from the talk: Design is a field where you are supposed to carve out your own path. It is highly individualistic. You have to empower your own selves in this field. Design students have the opportunity to start earning very early and faculties must help them. Put up your designs and art work on forums like Postergully. Think out of the box. 13 CAMPUS THE TELEGRAPH THURSDAY 19 MAY 2016 XXCE Topic: Beyond Fear Speaker: Pratish Nair, co- founder of The Prahlad Kakar School of Branding & Entrepreneurship Takeaways from the talk: We are all dead scared and that’s the main problem. We are scared of taking risks. We are scared of embarrassment and what people will say. We need to let go of this. You are used to doing whatever people ask you to do. Don’t let others influence your choices and decisions. Try new things. Never give the answer “let’s see” when you’re asked to try something new. Topic: Kolkata Youth: Social Media to Business Speakers: (L-R) Soumya Mukherji, co-founder, Mad About Drama; Rimbik Das, founder, The Indian Artist; Abhishek Bajaj, co- founder, ZeroInfy.com; Tanmay Mukherjee, blogger Bongpen; Anirban Saha, founder, Kolkata Bloggers. Takeaways from the talk: It is important for the youth to use social media well for marketing. The confidence to market something should come from the quality of work. Social media should be used to not only reach out to a wider audience but also to get clients on board. Build your company’s brand before your own brand. If the brand becomes famous, you will automatically become famous. Create content that is unique and different from everyone else. Content is king while the design is queen. Topic: Education Leadership Panel Speakers: (L-R) Pradip Chopra, chairman, iLead; Imran Zaki, president of Faces and mentor of Edutainment; Debasish Biswas, chairman, Lincoln Education Pvt. Ltd (India); Cecil Antony, chief mentor and managing trustee, NSHM Knowledge Campus; Amitabha Datta, director, Calcutta Media Institute; Ujjwal K. Chowdhury, content director, Edutainment Summit, and director, Unitedworld Institute of Media & Communication. That was the first panel at The Edutainment Show, organised by Event Capital, a division of Laqshya Media Group, and partnered by The Telegraph at The Park. Takeaways from the talk: You cannot move forward in your field of work without strong content. You should find out about various career options to expand your horizons and so should your parents. Convert your passion into profession. India is the second largest market after the US in online education. Custom learning, community inclusive engagements and library with e-books are some of the ways in which students will learn in future. Topic: Shamiana Short Film Session: Oscar Winning Short Films Show and Art, Craft & Business of Short Films. Speakers: (L-R) Moderator Ghazala Yasmin, head of the department of media, Aliah University; Cyrus Dastur, founder, Shamiana Arts. Takeaways from the talk: The Oscars are not only for feature films. There is a sudden increase in the popularity of short films not because it is easy to make and light on the budget, but because everyone has a story to tell. Most short films are self-funded. Putting up your short film on YouTube is not the best way to gain popularity. You must send it to numerous film festivals to get credibility. In case you have a low budget, you can get your films funded through the Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) or Films Division (FD). Pitch your ideas to these organisations and you can get the money and recover your losses too (if there are any). Topic: The Role of Digital Communication in Building Brand Speakers: (L-R) Mrityunjoy Chatterjee, director, Amity School of Communication, Amity University; Kanchan Datta, president, Advertising Club Calcutta; Surojit Sen, associate vice-president and client services director — digital, J. We live in a VUCA world: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous. “Moment Marketing” is the key phrase these days. Capture a moment in your campaign that touches many people and feel the emotions yourself. A contrarian states that traditional media actually allows you to go mass in a way most social media posts will not. You’ll reach more people via an ad in the newspaper. The questions you have to ask yourself are: What to communicate, how to communicate, is it relevant content, is it impactful and does it have that “hatke factor”? Topic: Media Education 2.0 Speaker: Jayanta Mukherjee, dean, Thadomal Shahani Centre For Media And Communications, Mumbai Takeaways from the talk: Students nowadays trust virtual mediums like WhatsApp and Facebook. These are the future classrooms. Teachers should take to interacting with students more on these platforms. A topic discussed in a class should be taught differently. It can go on to become a “trending topic” on Twitter. YouTube sessions should be used as textbooks and for lectures. In media studies, students should be taught more about trendmakers and trendsetters. Current topics should be given as assignments so that the students enjoy working on it. Topic: Role of Communication Today in Science and Scientific Temper Speaker: Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, vice- chancellor, Amity University Kolkata Takeaways from the talk: Scientific temper is a way of life — an individual and social process of thinking and acting — that uses a scientific method, which may include questioning, observing physical reality, testing, hypothesising, analysing, and communicating.
