PRESENTATION

The XVII RAS and VIII CLS Meeting is aimed at presenting scientific advances in the fields of sedimentology and applied stratigraphy to the analysis of sedimentary basins. For the first time, these events will take place in Argentina’s northeast region (Argentine Mesopotamia, Chaco and Northern Pampa). The privileged geographical location of Paraná city on the left bank of the Paraná River, one of the largest anabranching fluvial systems in the world, is the perfect setting to access the river and the geological expositions. This fluvial system is a true laboratory for the study of current sedimentary processes, as well as for the analysis of the river sedimentary record.

This event is co-organized by the Argentine Association of Sedimentology (AAS) and the Entre Ríos Autonomous University (UADER), and it is sponsored by academic institutions and research centers from both the Entre Rios and Santa Fe Provinces. As well as from CONICET and ANP I+D+i. Under the motto “Sedimentology, energy and environment: exploring new scenarios”, scientific, technical, technological and economic discussions will be encouraged throughout the event, especially focusing on sedimentology and its applications as strategic tools for social and economic development.

We face the challenge of finding ways to use the knowledge from new research lines in sedimentology, to provide solutions to the needs of both private and public institutions and agencies in our communities. We expect the RAS and CLS Meeting to be an opportunity to strengthen the cooperation among interdisciplinary working groups, in order to boost the production of new and more complex scientific, technologic and productive knowledge. In Argentina, plains are the areas where the main social and productive activities are carried out. In them we can find important geological resources and vast amounts of data. Therefore, exploring their sedimentological aspects is extremely relevant and highly appreciated. Moreover, environmental hazards in plain regions along with the exploration for geological resources linked to conventional and non-conventional energy sources, are increasingly frequent issues on our country’s agenda. In this context, the RAS and CLS Meeting becomes the ideal environment for both professional and social exchange, enrichment and empowerment.

We hope that this initiative will captivate the interest of scientists and professionals who are engaging in different fields of the sedimentological community. We invite you all to continue in your commitment to be an active member of this event, in order to ensure its absolute success.

NEW MODALITYConsidering the complex situation that our country and the world are going through, the Meeting will have a flexible format. It will be a hybrid meeting with in-person and virtual presentations, both simultaneous and asynchronous. The implementation of this new format (development of the event online platform, sessions and online conferences program, e-posters, workshops and virtual courses) represents a new challenge and an extra effort from the Organizing Committee. We aim to achieve the maximum participation of colleagues from Argentina and Latin American countries, through the modality of their choice, and in accordance with the safety and health conditions required for events in October 2021. Besides, the virtual modality will also allow the participation of leading sedimentologists from the Northern Hemisphere.

The decision to hold a hybrid meeting was the result of extensive surveys among the participants, who opted for in-person participation with the adequate safety and health measures (47.6%) as well as for an active virtual participation (52.4%).This flexible format will allow us to switch to a completely virtual modality, if new public health regulations by October 2021 demand so.

DATES AND DEADLINES• Registration re-opens: May 10, 2021• Abstract submission re-opens: May 10, 2021• Meeting starts: October 27, 2021• Post-meeting courses start (virtual modality): November 1, 2021

IMPORTANT DATES• Abstract submission deadline: July 30, 2021 (hard deadline)

• Early registration deadline (early bird fee): September 15, 2021

• Abstract acceptance notification deadline: September 30, 2021

SUBMISSIONParticipants may choose to present their work either in-person or virtually, in the form of invited plenary conferences and synchronous oral presentations, or virtual asynchronous contributions (short presentations or e-posters). Depending on the number of oral presentations accepted for in-person and synchronous virtual mode, each presentation will last 12-15 minutes, including the time for questions and discussion.

Due to the restrictions and protocols currently in place at the Convention Center, the event program will consist of a single central schedule, which will be diversified with simultaneous virtual sessions and asynchronous contributions outside of the schedule. Participants who choose the in-person modality may attend the Convention Center, with a maximum capacity of 70 people. The virtual auditorium and the in-person auditorium will be connected synchronously through a TV circuit and a streaming platform, allowing the emission and reception of presentations and questions in both directions, following a common program.

Moreover, there will be a platform for the registration of participants, as well as to access the content asynchronously.

Instructions about the formatting and characteristics of virtual oral presentations, both synchronous and asynchronous, will be published in the 5th circular.

Guidelines for the submission of abstractsAbstracts should correspond to an original and unpublished research. Authors must select the Thematic Session (or General Session) corresponding to their work, and the type of presentation that they prefer (oral or asynchronous presentation - poster or short contribution-). The Scientific Committee has the authority to accept or modify that selection, in which case the authors will be informed about the decision. Up to two presentations (oral or poster) per author will be accepted, as author or co-author. At least one of the authors of each abstract accepted by the Scientific Committee should be registered to the Meeting before September 15, 2021.

Abstracts should be limited to 1 page in A4 format; 2 cm indentation on both sides; Word format (.doc o .docx). The title should be full capital letters (Times New Roman 12), in bold and centred in the page. Author’s names should be lower-case letters (Times New Roman 12) centred in the next line, in bold and separated by commas. Filiations should be centred in the next line, in italics, without line spacing (Times New Roman 9). The text must be written at 1 line spacing, one column, without indentation (tab key or spaces) and Times New Roman 11 style. The authors may include a selection of the most relevant bibliography (Times New Roman 9). The references must follow the LAJSBA journal format: . www.sedimentologia.org.ar/spa/revistaFigures and Tables are not allowed in the abstracts. Abstracts must include the results and conclusions of the research. They can be written in Spanish, Portuguese or English. The contributions will be included in the event’s digital book of abstracts once they have been accepted by the Scientific Committee. The contributions that do not follow these guidelines will not be revised.

Abstracts must be submitted in electronic format to: [email protected]

Please, label the file with the first author’s last name followed by “et al”, when applicable. Add correlative numbering to the file name in case of submitting more than one abstract. E.g., “Rodriguez et al_1”.

The abstract submission deadline is July 30, 2021 (hard deadline). Authors will be required to confirm the presentation modality (virtual or in-person) closer to the event date.

The Meeting Programme will be available to all registered participants on October 20, 2021. The digital version of the Programme, the book of abstracts and the presentations videos will be available to all registered participants on the platform of the event.
