London Stock Exchange (XTA.L)

£13.21It’s an exciting time for our Xstrata Zinc business. Further to an announcement in September 2009, we are in the final stages of a feasibility study into the Black Star Deeps Expansion Project. If approved, the proposed $133 million project would ensure the mine’s sustainability through to 2016 and maintain current employment levels. Read more about this on page two.

In March, Xstrata Copper’s North Queensland operations announced a restructure of its senior management team. Further to these changes, we have commenced a strategic review of the copper operations’ requirements in order to restructure and resource our business appropriately into the future. Read more about these important changes on page one.

It is pleasing to see our employees receiving State and industry-wide recognition for their professional achievements. Kerry Brisbane – Electrical Team Leader at the Xstrata Skills Centre, was named Tradesperson of the Year at the recent Queensland Resources Council’s Resources Awards for Women. We also congratulate Ernest Henry Mining’s Kylie Hughes – Production Engineering Officer who was also recognised at these awards and received a Highly Commended award in the Overall Category. Please refer to pages four and five for more details on Kerry and Kylie’s outstanding achievements.

We remain committed to sharing our Sustainable Development successes and challenges from 2009 with you. Three annual Sustainability Reports have been prepared covering our north Queensland operations; one site specific report - Xstrata Mount Isa Mines and two divisional reports - Xstrata Copper North Queensland and Xstrata Zinc Australia, which cover our health, safety, people, community and environmental activities for 2009. A full set of the Sustainability Reports can be found at: www.xstrata.com/sustainability.

Congratulations to all those employees who have helped to raise a total of over $24,000 in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. You will be pleased to hear that we are currently sitting in 10th place in Queensland. To read more about our fundraising activities please refer to pages six and seven.

The results of the 2008/2009 National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) online database were announced on 1 April. The report for Xstrata Mount Isa Mines shows substantial decreases in five of the six emissions compounds to the NPI database for which it was the top emitter the previous year. There was a slight increase in sulphur dioxide on-site emissions reported in the NPI year on year, largely due to shutdowns by Incitec Pivot’s acid plant. The NPI 2008/2009 results also showed that Xstrata Mount Isa Mines became the top emitter of copper and cobalt for this period. For more information please refer to page three.

STORY

Michael Holmes, formerly General Manager Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO), left in early April to prepare for taking up a Senior Management assignment with Xstrata Copper in South America.

Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer, Xstrata Copper North Queensland, said:

“I would like to thank Michael for his significant contribution to our north Queensland business, particularly in the Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) and the local community over the past six years.

“We wish Michael and his wife, Jennifer, and their family all the best as they embrace all the challenges and opportunities presented by a new chapter of their lives in South America.”

A number of other changes to the Division’s senior management team and to some of their roles and responsibilities have also been announced. These include: » Mike Westerman, formerly GM Ernest

Henry Mine (EHM) based in Cloncurry has taken up the position of General Manager Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) based in Mount Isa. Mike’s role will also include the added responsibilities of Bulk Products Logistics and Project Development, including the copper starter open pit, Halo and Copperbalt projects.

» Myles Johnston, formerly GM Strategic Planning based in Mount Isa has taken over from Mike at EHM based in Cloncurry. Myles will also retain the regional development and exploration facets of his former role, General Manager North Queensland Copper Strategic Planning.

» As a result of the Division’s commitment to ongoing improvements in sustainable development, the new position of General Manager Sustainable Development North Queensland Copper has been created. The current SD Management in Health and Safety, Environment and Community Relations will report to this position.

» Ken Draffen, General Manager Engineering Services and Projects, will retain his current responsibilities but with the added responsibility of all Mount Isa profit centre engineering services and projects groups. This will centralise and streamline the Division’s engineering and project service delivery.

» Sue Sara will retain her role as General Manager Corporate Affairs Queensland with a strengthened focus on strategic corporate affairs and government relations, given the demands and expectations on our business in this area. The North Queensland community relations and SD issues management responsibilities previously covered by Sue will be transferred to the General Manager Sustainable Development.

» Yves Brouillette, currently at Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Smelter in Canada, will join Xstrata Copper based in Brisbane as General Manager Asset Management for Xstrata Copper globally. In this role, Yves will provide leadership across the global Xstrata Copper Business Unit to reinforce leading asset management practices.

“These changes, effective 6 April, are designed to enable our Division to maintain its strategic position as an important contributor to our global Copper Business Unit.”

“Our priorities will be on further improving our sustainable development performance and improving our profitability as we develop the EHM underground and magnetite projects, transition to new environmental regulations in Mount Isa and develop additional copper mining resources in the Mount Isa and Cloncurry regions,” said Steve.

A farewell article to Michael Holmes will be included in the April edition of Mine to Market.

The project remains subject to internal and external approvals but, if approved, the BSOC ‘Deeps’ project would ensure the mine’s sustainability

and maintain current employment levels. A feasibility study into the expansion commenced in 2009 and technical studies are continuing.

The project is expected to be submitted for approval to the Xstrata plc Executive Committee in April 2010.

“The investment in Black Star is part of a value adding strategy to increase production from current assets. With the deepening of Black Star, we can maximise the significant resource potential it contains and maintain the mine’s current production profile. This would enable us to continue to fill the concentrator to its expanded 8 million tonnes per annum capacity,” said Brian Hearne – Chief Operating Officer, Xstrata Zinc Australia.

“The BSOC Deeps project would deepen the existing pit and target ore at a depth of 400 metres below ground surface level, 100 metres below the current design. This is expected to add approximately 14 million tonnes of ore to the production profile at a rate of up to 4.6 million tonnes per year.

“Importantly, if approved, the expanded BSOC operation would continue to operate in accordance with approved operating procedures.

“Detailed planning shows the BSOC Deeps project will cause minimal changes to current environmental conditions. The detailed feasibility study initiated in 2009 supports this expansion and included detailed geotechnical analysis and studies into air quality, noise, vibration, surface and ground water,” said Brian.

A Mining Plan Amendment detailing plans for the development was submitted to the Queensland Government in March for consideration.

The project would employ up to 100 contractors during the development phase and maintain the current 190-strong workforce at BSOC.

This initiative is an important part of our continuing commitment to invest in the sustainability of our north Queensland assets and the communities in which we operate.

Watch this space for further key developments of the project.

“If approved the project would employ up to 100 contractors during the development phase and maintain the current 190-strong workforce at BSOC.”

Black Star Open Cut

Deeps expansion feasibility projectFurther to an announcement we made in September’s edition of Mine to Market, Xstrata Zinc is proposing to expand its Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) mine in Mount Isa through a $133 million project which will potentially extend the life of the mine at current production rates by four years to 2016.

ENVIRONMENT

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines reports:

Significant emissions reductionsXstrata Mount Isa Mines has reported substantial emissions reductions to the 2008/09 National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) online database.

The 2008/09 report for Xstrata Mount Isa Mines shows substantial decreases in five of the six emissions compounds to the NPI database for which it was

the top emitter in the previous year. These results are due to the implementation

of a range of continuous, proactive environmental initiatives over the period, along with improvements to our emissions evaluations.

“As the largest mining and processing facility in Australia, Xstrata Mount Isa Mines is committed to sustainably managing our operations,” said Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer, Xstrata Copper North Queensland.

“Xstrata Mount Isa Mines has a significant operational footprint which is comparable to the sum of multiple individual mines and industrial facilities listed on the NPI,” said Steve.

“Our commitment to continuous environmental improvements has contributed to substantial reductions in operational emissions.

“We plan to continue building on the advances made to reduce emissions from our operations.

“It is important to note that NPI is an estimation of emissions on-site, it does not measure emissions in the Mount Isa community.

“Xstrata is proud of its record of never exceeding limits for lead levels at any air monitor in the Mount Isa community since acquiring Mount Isa Mines in 2003.

“Mount Isa has the most intensive air quality monitoring system of any city in Australia and our smelters are shut down when emissions approach regulated limits,” he said.

Kerry, an Electrical Team Leader at the Xstrata Skills Centre took out the prestigious Tradesperson of the Year Award while Kylie Hughes

– Production Engineering Officer at Ernest Henry Mining (EHM), received a Highly Commended in the overall category.

With a career spanning over 30 years, Kerry has paved the way for many female apprentices and has been a strong mentor and leader within the business over this time. In fact Kerry was one of the first female apprentices to work underground at Mount Isa Mines.

Kerry has been instrumental in the development of the Skills Centre which from its inception in 2006, has grown to house the largest apprenticeship program in north Queensland.

“I had the opportunity to have a great deal of input into how we set up the state-of-the-art workshop and developed much of the curriculum for the industry-leading training programs. I was the first female team leader at the Centre.

One thing that keeps her passion alive for her role is the rewards that come with working with young people.

“For me, the opportunity to work with young men and women (mostly local and Indigenous youth) to overcome the challenges they face in today’s fast paced society is extremely rewarding. It is incredible to see some of the situations our young people find themselves; yet they never seem to give up.

Having worked for Mount Isa Mines for 13 years where I made my way up to an instructor role at the old Trades Training Centre, ran my own local contracting electrical business for 10 years; taught at TAFE for three years; and has now back at Mount Isa Mines at the Xstrata Skills Centre for over five years.

As Electrical Team Leader Kerry has helped to design and implement a number of industry-leading work experience and apprenticeship programs aimed at promoting the mining industry and creating clear pathways for our youth. These include: Apprenticeship Program, School-based apprenticeship program, Certificate I in Engineering and Certificate II in Metalliferous Mining (Processing).

“I hope that being recognised through the Tradesperson of the Year Award for the leadership role I currently fill will help to promote and empower other females in the Resources Sector,” said Kerry.

Kylie has worked at EHM for six years in a variety of roles and has been an Equal Employment Officer for most of that time.

She has helped to provide training for team members on a number of occasions and has offered guidance to new women truck operators working on the site’s Permanent Part Time (PPT) crew, sharing personal experiences from her own time in that role.

Kylie’s husband also works at EHM and they fly in and out of Townsville, leaving their young son Michael in the care of Kylie’s parents while they are at work.

“It’s great to have this balance between work and home life and it gives me the ability to focus on the task at hand while I am at work, knowing Michael is in the loving hands of his grandparents,” Kylie said.

“It’s challenging, but it allows us to spend quality time with Michael on our days off.

“I’ve tried to demonstrate that having a family, furthering my career development and working are not mutually exclusive and that anyone can achieve their goals if they have the desire to do so.

“I always get a sense of satisfaction out of changing someone’s perception of what a woman’s role should be in the working world, especially in an industry like mining that was once so male-dominated,” said Kylie.

Kylie says she was surprised when her name was called out at the awards.

“It was an honour and quite humbling to receive an award, especially considering the number of high level candidates who applied,” Kylie said.

The awards breakfast was held at the Sofitel on 8 March with the keynote speaker being Geotech’s Alice Clarke. Both Kerry and Kylie said the breakfast was a real eye opener and it was great to meet so many other women from within the industry.

“Many of the women there hold key positions within some of Australia’s most successful mining companies, and to hear them tell of the tales of their success was truly inspiring,” they said.

Congratulations are extended to both Kerry and Kylie on their achievements.

During her three day trip Baroness Amos visited Xstrata Mount Isa Mines, meeting with the senior management team and touring the

underground copper mine.“I have been one mile underground which

was such a fascinating experience,” said Baroness Amos.

“I’ve learnt about the importance of the mine from an economic development perspective but I’ve also learnt about their support for the community and their focus on sustainable development,” she said.

Baroness Amos also attended a civic reception hosted by Mayor John Molony and

the St Patrick’s Day ball at the Irish Club. Other highlights of her trip included meeting with community and business leaders, learning about Indigenous art and culture and visiting the Outback at Isa tourist centre.

A key focus of her visit was to learn more about local Indigenous culture. On day two of her visit, Baroness Amos visited Jimaylya Topsy Harry Centre and the Riverbed Action Group’s Burke Street Intervention Centre, one of Xstrata’s community partners through the Xstrata Community Partnership Program North Queensland, where she enjoyed observing Indigenous paintings and received gifts from the Kalkadoon community.

“I’ve also been able to spend a day talking about Indigenous issues and some of the challenges being faced as well as learn a bit about their culture,” she said.

The centre runs intervention programs which expose participants to educational resources which assist them in developing important social, cultural and life skills.

During March six participants successfully graduated from the program. Graduates were acknowledged at a ceremony held at Centacare which was well attended by family members, NWQICSS staff and community partners.

Michael Borne – Interventions Manager NWQICSS said “the Intervention program is imperative towards making positive social changes to improving attitudes and maintaining relationships in our community for Indigenous people.”

Through the Xstrata Community Partnership Program North Queensland, Xstrata has partnered with the Burke Street Intervention Centre since 2005 to assist in delivering diversionary services.

In addition to the intervention program the Burke Street Intervention centre offers support and education to families of those suffering from alcohol and drug dependency and provides an aftercare and relapse prevention service.

NEWS

Cloncurry students are enjoying new interactive whiteboards in classrooms at both St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and Cloncurry State School.

The whiteboards were purchased with funding from the Xstrata Community Partnership Program North Queensland to enhance technology and multimedia education at the schools.

While Cloncurry State School purchased one whiteboard in 2009, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School has invested in four whiteboards, launching the new technology at an information session for students and teachers on 10 February.

Bob Grant – St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Principal, said the interactive whiteboards are providing countless benefits in the school’s classrooms.

“Students have commented that lessons are more interesting when they get to use an interactive whiteboard and teachers can use a variety of multimedia resources in order to help students grasp concepts,” he said.

“We value our partnership with Xstrata and look forward to working together in 2010 to further improve our school’s technological systems.”

School Bursary recipients announcedOn 25 February the successful recipients of Xstrata’s 2010 School Bursary Program were announced.

Of the 32 applicants, 16 Year 11 students from Spinifex State College and Good Shepherd Catholic College were awarded $1,000 to help fund their schooling and higher education.

The selection process consisted of a formal application, one week of work experience and a formal behavioural based interview.

The School Bursary Program specifically offers students the opportunity to undertake work experience in a variety of areas in Xstrata’s North Queensland operations, while receiving mentoring from Xstrata employees.

This allows students to form career pathways in the mining sector while experiencing first hand the working environment. Some of the students use this experience to gain further knowledge about possible university degrees and career pathways into the apprenticeship program.

Dick Kostowski – Senior Training and Development Advisor, said the Bursary Program is a work experience program designed to give students the opportunity to experience working life in the mining industry.

“This hands-on approach allows students to choose pathways that are suited to them,” he said.

“The four weeks of work experience offered to Year 10 and 11 students are invaluable and provide them with an opportunity to experience working life on a mine site.”

The innovation improves safety for personnel working to release air from large tyres.

The high tyre pressures involved with this task can potentially expose personnel to various hazards such as extreme noise and uncontrolled objects, such as rust or dirt, which can be dispersed at high speed causing injury. The tyre deflation station helps to reduce the risks associated with these hazards.

The mobile tyre deflation station consists of two large mufflers which are permanently fixed to a mobile trolley and which connect to the tyre’s valving using a large bore inflator-deflator connector.

Air passes from the tyre through the air lines and into the mufflers before being directed down towards an air-deflecting edge.

“This award-winning innovation also helps to control noise since the air is dispersed and potential flying particles or objects are directed away from personnel.”

Domestic cathode sales are an important part of the total marketing strategy for the Xstrata Copper North Queensland Division and it is

important to ensure the right volume of copper is delivered to the customer at the right time.

The previous arrangement involved a combination of transport services including road transport direct from Townsville to Port Kembla, as well as rail transport from Townsville to Brisbane and then road transport to Port Kembla, NSW.

“This system made it challenging to track where each individual bundle was in the supply chain at any one time,” said Greg O’Shea – Manager Port, Logistics and Support.

“The new arrangement sees the cathode loaded into a container at the copper refinery. The container is then sealed and transported to the Yennora rail depot in Sydney.

“These sealed containers are then transferred to road transport and delivered to the customer in Port Kembla where the containers are unsealed. This system has simplified the bundle tracking issue.

“In the first two months of the contract, QR National have transported in excess of the contract tonnage which is a excellent outcome considering the weather delays experienced on the Townsville to Brisbane line throughout January and February,” said Greg.

Adrian Ah One, Norman Hill, Frederick Body and Patrick Tyrrell all graduated in early December from the Myuma Training Program, an initiative supported through the Xstrata Community Partnership Program North Queensland, and they were keen to take up the opportunity for further training and work experience at EHM.

The group began the program with a week-long Budda Jitja course through Cloncurry TAFE where they gained skills in computer literacy, budgeting, health and wellbeing and work-readiness.

Gary Birch, who moved from his position as Fabrication Instructor at the Xstrata Skills Centre in Mount Isa to become EHM’s Indigenous Traineeship Coordinator, said the trainees are excited about being a part of the program.

“We’ll be based out of a shed at the EHM village and we’re in the process of setting it up as our workshop,” he said.

“The trainees are helping to renovate their workspace and once it’s finished they’ll be able to take on all sorts of projects and tasks to help different departments on site with work that needs to be done.

“We’ll also be involved with in-kind projects within the local Cloncurry community,” he said.

The program aims to prepare the trainees for full-time employment in the mining industry and will include training in machine and plant operations as well as metal fabrication and carpentry.

“The trainees are enjoying the program and they’re all really enthusiastic about the experience they’re gaining in the industry,” said Gary.

Hear and Say Centre delivers benefits to BowenEven though three year old Kayla McIntyre from Bowen was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at birth, she is learning to hear and speak through Hear and Say’s Outreach Program.

Xstrata’s partnership with the Hear and Say Outreach program, through the Xstrata Community Partnership Program Queensland, has given Hear and Say the opportunity to provide the best service to hearing impaired children in rural and remote areas of Queensland.

The Outreach program provides these children with regular therapy sessions in their own homes using web technology and home visits by Brisbane based therapists once a term.

“Without Xstrata’s support Kayla’s lessons and the wonderful support that we get through Hear and Say would not be possible,” said Kayla’s Grandmother Jackie Land.

“Kayla benefits so much from these lessons and looks forward to them and the new things she gets to do. We really appreciate their support and cannot thank them enough and one day hope that our darling little Kayla will be able to thank them as well,” she said.

Hear and Say is a Queensland-wide charity which teaches deaf children to hear, listen and speak to an age appropriate level by the time they reach school entry age. This gives children the opportunity to maximise their potential for education, employment, knowledge and understanding.

15 MARCH 2010 MINE TO MARKET

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines

Currently, Xstrata Mount Isa Mines has raised over $24,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation which includes some outstanding efforts from key individuals. So far, the money raised has helped to secure Xstrata Mount Isa Mines’ position as the 10th highest fundraiser in Queensland.

Employees from all over the mine converged on Isa Distribution Centre to see ‘Shippy’ George, cut off her lovely 80 centimetre locks. With her family in attendance, Shippy bid her long locks goodbye (which she had grown over the past four years) and raised over $9,000 alone.

Over at the zinc-lead concentrator, a barbeque lunch was organised for the employees with Clint Armstrong – General Manager Processing, offering the hair on his head (and chest!) for $400. With lots of laughter and some sympathy for their General Manager, the 150 strong employees dug deep to raise over $2,500.

More than 200 employees and contractors attended the copper smelter shave-off which included a sausage sizzle, hair colouring and free entertainment. A culmination of fundraising efforts by Justin Spillman, Rebecca Munday, Geoff Sparks, and Peter Jansen, all lead to them shaving (even Rebecca!). Rebecca was sad to see her long blonde hair go, while Andrew Glover took great pleasure in waxing Justin’s eyebrows. After receiving a very generous donation, Jim Bryne also sat down to lose his locks and sported a new look for the copper smelter with a copper anode and the Xstrata Copper logo engraved into his head.

Other top fundraising departments at Xstrata Mount Isa Mines were:

• Lead Smelter $1,800• Xstrata Skills Centre – over $1,300• Site Services – over $1,100• Black Star Open Cut mine – over $700

Top individual fundraisers were:• ‘Shippy’ George – over $9,000• Justin Spillman – over $2,300• Mark Campbell – over $1,000• Geoff Sparks – nearly $800• Kelly Barnese – nearly $700

With a few departments yet to finalise their fundraising activities, we will wrap up the fundraising successes of Xstrata North Queensland in April’s edition of Mine to Market.

Ernest Henry Mining

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) raised over $5,000 in this year’s Shave for a Cure. Two ‘shave and colour’ nights were held at the village on 4 and 11 March, with 14 people volunteering to shave, wax or colour their hair.

A cake auction was also held to raise further funds with a number of generous volunteers baking cakes, slices and biscuits. A total of $1,195 was raised through the auction. Sodexo’s donation (a large chocolate sponge cake layered with mixed berries and coulis) was the top priced cake, bought for $320.

Brisbane Corporate Office

The Brisbane office got creative and auctioned off the opportunity to shave a colleagues head. The auction raised more than $1,200 with Martin Fewings, John Turley, Rob Marshall and Shrotish Kumar all being brave and shaving.

Thanks to all who participated in and our fundraising efforts this year. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Xstrata has been getting into the charitable spirit with a host of fundraising activities across its north Queensland operations as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave held from 10 to 12 March. Barbeques and shave-offs were held at Xstrata Mount Isa Mines, Ernest Henry Mining and the Brisbane Corporate Office as part of this event. Here are some of the highlights from our north Queensland sites …

16 MINE TO MARKET MARCH 2010

Held from 5 to 7 March, the annual event has been supported by Xstrata over the past few years. The aim of the initiative is to encourage people

to correctly dispose of household wastes in an environmental friendly manner and by doing so, help to keep our communities clean and tidy.

In Mount Isa, Xstrata Mount Isa Mines’ environment and supply departments assisted the Mount Isa city Council to correctly dispose of the following: » 40 cubic metres of tyres » Approximately 2,500L of waste oil » 15 Batteries » 55 tins of paint » An assortment of pesticides and solvents » Several fire extinguishers

“We would like to thank the Mount Isa City Council, Cleanaway, and Environment and Supply personnel for ensuring the household hazardous waste amnesty was conducted,” said Daniel Thompson – Environmental Advisor.

Over in Cloncurry, close to 30 volunteers took part in Cloncurry’s Clean up Australia Day activities on Sunday 7 March, with 17 volunteers from Ernest Henry Mining.

“It was great to see so many people volunteer their time to make our local area a nicer place.”

With an increase in volunteer numbers from 2008, the group worked to tidy up the recreation area at Chinaman Creek Dam, collecting four ute-loads of rubbish in just a few hours.

Nina Sandral – Community Services Officer for the Cloncurry Shire Council, thanked all those involved and said the day was a great success.

“We collected all sorts of items such as bed mattresses, a car bumper, truck parts, plumbing equipment and other general rubbish that had built up over the years,” she said.

“It was great to see so many people volunteer their time to make our local area a nicer place.”

All volunteers in Cloncurry were treated to a barbeque lunch after the clean up had finished.

ENVIRONMENT

Pat Windsor – Environmental Advisor, Paul Vaughan – Mechanical Technician, Kev Cowie – Site Electrical Supervisor and Trent Kapernick – Mechanical Technician, were just some of the EHM employees who helped to collect rubbish at Chinaman Creek Dam on Clean Up Australia Day.

Antarctic Adventure

Few people can say they have ventured to earth’s southern most continent, like Xstrata Zinc Health and Safety Superintendent – Jennie Sutcliffe who recently embarked on a 10 day expedition to Antarctica.

During a five and a half week trip mainly oriented in South America, Jennie’s Antarctic adventure began in late December 2009 where she

boarded a small Russian Icebreaker (the ‘Polar Pioneer’) departing from Ushuaia, Argentina.

After two days of sailing and seeing nothing but birds, the odd Humpback whale and penguins, the boat crossed over into the Antarctic Converge and into Antarctica where Jennie saw her very first iceberg.

Jennie visited numerous places on the Antarctic Peninsular and the surrounding islands and she says there were many highlights to her trip.

“I spent New Year’s Eve at Gourdin Island. There were 55 of us all up and we had a barbeque on the back deck of the boat. It was twilight the entire night and there was not another boat in sight. It was amazing.

“We turned up the music and kept ourselves warm by dancing the night away, drinking a warm spiced wine and Russian Vodka. We were surrounded by snow capped mountains, iceberg’s, penguins, Minki whales and seals.

“Astrolabe Island was stunning. It was like an Iceberg gallery with all of these stunning icebergs and glaciers; I didn’t know where to point the camera ...”

“Deception Island is an active Volcano that erupted in the 1960s and again in the early 1990s totally destroying the Chilean and British bases that were there. Here we also did a thing called the polar plunge where people fearlessly leapt into the water.”

When asked why she chose to visit Antarctica, Jennie says because she wanted to go somewhere different.

“When I noticed that Aurora were running a New Year’s Eve cruise I decided there was no better place to see in 2010 than the Antarctic,” said Jennie.

“For the entire ten days we didn’t see another boat or another group of tourists. That really makes you think you were somewhere special,” she said.

Not only did Jennie get to visit some amazing places, she also got to meet some interesting people along the way.

Jennie was lucky enough to spend 10 days on a boat with David Koch (aka Kochie) from the Channel 7’s Sunrise program and Gary Miller – tour guide and Penguin Consultant for the movie Happy Feet.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

The simulator is intended to be made available for training purposes to the entire north Queensland operations. The simulator will provide valuable

training for heavy equipment operators with an extensive variety of scenarios available for both underground and surface operations.

The incorporation of underground modules in the simulator training system will place Xstrata Copper at the leading edge of equipment operation training in the underground environment.

A key benefit of the simulator training is that it provides a safe environment for training and limits the impact on production should equipment be damaged through training.

Gary Roberts – Health and Safety Advisor for Bulk Product Logistics, said the training provided through the simulator will help to increase operator safety, reduce downtime on equipment and increase production.

“Through visual and audio cues the simulator provides a hands-on learning environment which greatly improves learning transfer and the knowledge retention of new operators. The simulator captures operator responses to these scenarios which we can use to assess their competencies,” said Gary.

“Furthermore, it provides the operator with the ability to become highly proficient with the machine controls before entering the operations,” he said.

Xstrata Copper invests in cutting edge trainingA training simulator, providing many training benefits to the north Queensland copper operations recently made its way from Ernest Henry Mine to Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa operations on 17 March.

Keeping our suppliers informed

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines recently held a suppliers forum at the Mount Isa Civic Centre which was attended by close to 100 people.

The forum, held on 19 February was an opportunity for suppliers to learn more about the Xstrata Zinc and Xstrata Copper businesses, and their sustainable development practices and obligations.

Representatives of Xstrata’s management team presented on topics of interest including; supplier engagement and supplier opportunities, contractor engagement and contractor accreditation, and cost competitiveness.

Following the presentations a panel discussion and a questions and answer time was facilitated.

Bruce Watson – Manager Supply, said the suppliers forum was very successful and a great opportunity for our current and potential suppliers to learn more about our business and share our commitment to sustainable development.

“Allowing our suppliers to better understand Xstrata’s commitment to sustainable development and our need to remain competitive through the commodity cost cycles helps empower our suppliers and ensure they are better prepared in securing our business.”

In order to protect your health and minimise your exposure to such hazards in the workplace, there are stringent occupational health and safety policies. However, it is also

important to take matters into your own hands and take responsibility for your own health and wellbeing.

Although we all learn to wash our hands from a young age, we do not all apply an effective technique. The skin on our hands is colonised with both normal flora (germs always present on the skin) with low potential to cause harm, and transient pathogenic flora (organisms such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa or fungi) which have the capacity to cause significant illness. For example, poor hand washing practices following toilet stops may contaminate food with faeces causing a Hepatitis A infection.

Furthermore, research indicates that a large percentage of bacteria on the hands (including E.coli) may be found under the finger nails, particularly longer nails. Therefore establishing

a thorough and methodical hand washing routine is one of the best ways to reduce your exposure to, and further passage of, contaminants and germs in the workplace.

An efficient hand washing technique involves the following steps:1. Use soap and water – wet hands first and

apply adequate soap creating a lather2. Vigorously wash hands for at least 20 to 30

seconds. Friction caused by rubbing hands together removes the pathogens. Include the palms, between the fingers, the back of your hands, wrists, under any jewellery and fingernails.

3. Rinse hands with water and if possible use paper towel to turn off the tap to reduce recontamination

4. Dry hands thoroughly – preferably with a paper towel

Remember that the skin on your hands is the first line of defence against foreign invaders so keep your hands clean and well moisturised, maintain short fingernails and

avoid touching you face, smoking or handling food with dirty hands.
