XTREMEROLLERS

How can you ever expect a different result if you con-tinue to do the same thing? – John L.

So often people resist change in their professional and person-al lives. Change can evoke fear and uncertainty, thus allowing people to be in opposition of it. However, change is undoubtly necessary; examples of this are seen in the changing of the sea-sons, the development of our anatomy and the growth of our civi-lization. Without it, the ability to evolve and progress can get lost and the possibility of getting stuck in the same cycle is great.

Throughout the years, the rollerskating industry has made great advancements because of change: integrated rinks; various genres; commercialization of products; and even integration into mainstream media through movies, videos and commercials, have been just a few things that have progressed the sport of rollerskating.

Although, there have been prevalent changes in the structure of the sport, there is still much work to be done internally. Rollerskating— which was built on fellowship, community and fun, has somehow lost those basic qualities in exchange for animosity, isolation and confusion. This de-evolution has gener-ated setbacks, creating adverse and damaging perceptions within and surrounding the community.

But now, an opportunity for change has arisen, beginning with a new President in office who brings promises of change for a nation. I challenge you to use this energy and new found hope as motivation to induce change within yourself. Begin by making a promise to induct change within your community by talking and working with others, mend failing relationships and/or make an effort to give others a second or third chance to get it right.

XR News welcomes and encourages change— it is the foundation on which we have built our publica-tion. Without it, we would just be another piece of paper.

Enjoy this month’s issue!

HEALTH by Leah Bland

A Growing Anxiety Disorder Comes to the Forefront: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety dis-order that develops after a traumatic or terrifying event. Associated mostly with war veterans, PTSD has been around for many decades and has taken on numerous names. During the Civil War, it was referred to as a “sol-dier’s heart;” in WWI it was called “combat fatigue;” WWII labeled it as “gross stress reaction” and those who fought in Vietnam were assessed as having “post Vietnam syn-drome.” Today, it is not uncommon to hear people call it “battle fatigue syndrome” or “shell shock.” While PTSD is a disorder that for previous years may have been in the shadows or under the radar, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have brought it to the forefront. Although PTSD is mostly associated with individuals who have served in the military, anyone who has gone through a life-threatening event that has severely compro-mised their emotional well-being can develop this disor-der. These events include: combat or military exposure; child sexual/physical abuse; terrorist attacks; being a vic-tim of rape, mugging, robbery or assault; enduring abuse (physical, sexual or emotional); being the victim of a kid-napping or torture; or natural disasters. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, PTSD affects about 7.7 million American adults, but can occur at any age includ-ing childhood. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs, National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, states that women are 10 percent more likely to develop PTSD compared to five percent of men. Most people who have experienced a traumatic event have reactions such as shock, anger, nervousness, fear and even guilt. For someone who suffers from PTSD, these feelings continue and even increase, becoming so strong that it can keep a person from living a normal life. People with this disorder may startle easily, become emotionally numb, lose interest in things they used to enjoy, turn to alcohol or drugs, experience employment problems, have trouble feeling affectionate, and become more aggressive or even violent. They also tend to avoid situations that re-mind them of the original incident. Many people with PTSD have what has been labeled as “flashbacks” where they repeatedly relive the trauma in their thoughts during the day and in nightmares when they sleep. These flashbacks can consist of images, sounds, smells or feelings, and are often triggered by ordinary occurrences, such as door slamming or a car backfiring on the street. A person hav-

ing a flashback may lose touch with reality and believe that the traumatic incident is happening all over again. Many people who develop PTSD get better at some time. However, according to the National Center for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, 1 out of 3 people with PTSD may continue to have some symptoms. The symptoms usually start soon after the traumatic event, but may not happen until months or years later. These symptoms also may come and go over many years. The objective of treat-ment is to decrease the emotional and physical symptoms associated with PTSD, to improve daily functioning and to help the person better cope with the event that triggered the disorder. Treatment for PTSD can involve psychother-apy, medication or both. Psychotherapy involves helping the person learn skills to manage symptoms and develop ways of coping. The therapy also aims to teach the person and his or her family about the disorder, and help the per-son work through the fears associated with the traumatic event. There are various types of psychotherapy such as cognitive-behavior therapy, exposure therapy, psychody-namic therapy, family therapy or group therapy. Doctors may also decide to use antidepressant medications to treat PTSD and to control the feelings of anxiety and its associated symptoms. For more information on PTSD, please visit http://www.mentalhealth.va.gov/ptsd/.•

XTREMEROLLERS

XTREMEROLLER OF THE MONTH by Danica Williams

Each month, XR News selects an individual or group to be recognized as the “XtremeRoller of the Month.” Recipients are honored for one or more of the following: positiv-ity, unique or diverse skating style, and/or passion for the art of skating as well as the community at-large.

M. L. King, Sr., founder and president of the Caro-lina Cruisers Skaters As-sociation (CCSA), is a man of action. Charismatic and reflective, King’s reputa-tion as a leader has rapid-ly grown within the skating community. A native of Kinston, N.C., King was introduced to rollerskating approxi-mately 20 years ago. “I started [skating] back in the 80s when [it] was the hottest thing in town with good skate music,” he said. “My brother and

older sister, Christopher and Jeanetta, used to go skating all of the time. [It was] my brother’s passion for it that re-ally got me into it.” Along the way, King’s enthusiasm for the sport was intensified as he formed bonds with other skaters. “Willie Suggs, Ray, Theodore, Chris “CD” Gaddy (Carolina Cruisers) and Cee Cee (Augusta Jam Skaters) – these [skaters] are absolutely the best,” said King. It was his fond memories of the positive experienc-es that inspired King to create the CCSA. “I had several reasons [for founding the Carolina Cruisers], but my main reason was unity and to figure out how it was defined in the Raleigh area,” shares King. “People weren’t sociable at all…and at the time, there was maybe one other skate club in Raleigh. So, I spoke with CD, who was like my skate adviser, and to Tee (Detroit Rhythmic Rollers), and I got some sign-up sheets and started asking who would be interested in joining an association.” Founded in July 2006, the CCSA continues to attract members nationwide. “People just started coming and joining,” said King. “Even today, we are probably one of the few associations that have members from coast to coast! The original Cruisers are still together – more than 40, active members – and growing every single week.” In addition to his expand-ing association, King began to notice a transformation in the Raleigh area, almost immediately, that is still evident today. “Now, it’s like everybody knows each other and you can walk through the door and it’s a whole big, ball of wax,” he said. “There are so many skate groups now.

King skates regularly at his home rink, Skate Ranch, in Ra-

leigh, N.C. on Sunday nights; and on Thursdays at Galaxy of Sports in Kinston, N.C. The self-proclaimed “eastern seaboard man” has traveled to out of town skate parties in Baltimore, Virginia, Atlanta, Charlotte, Tampa, Fla., and Elsmere, Del. Whether skating on the inside or outside lanes, King likes to keep his skating technique innovative. “It’s all original," he said. “Personally I don’t like mimicking anybody. I’ll do line steps but as far as being like anybody [else], I just like to do my own thing. I just want to do me…that’s what makes [skating] good for me.” Nominated for the 2008 Adrenalin Award for Favorite Male Skater, King exudes his passion for the sport whenever he skates. “I’m all over the floor – I like the inside and outside – and I love real, good slow jams…I don’t have to have anybody to skate with…you know that,” he said with a chuckle. “I en-joy skating because it allows me to just be free – because when I’m skating, I don’t feel any pain at all. I’m in my skate mode when that breeze hits my face, – especially on the outside – and life is good.” King’s passion for skating is equal to his passion for his community. The father of one allocates time in his busy schedule to coach co-ed basketball and baseball in his area. “I have coached the girls basketball team, ages 12 and under, for seven years,” said King. “The team has been the undefeated state champions for five years.” King’s own passion for community outreach is a major component in his association’s activities including: estab-lishing two youth groups that are open to the public – the Carolina Cruiser Neos and the Kings and Queens; con-ducting a voter registration for the 2008 presidential elec-tion; volunteering with Meals on Wheels; supporting the American troops; and participating in the American Heart Association Walk in Durham, N.C. The public took notice of King and the Carolina Cruisers hard work in the com-munity by awarding them with the 2008 Adrenalin Award for Best Skate Organization. Despite his hectic schedule, King has penned sev-eral novels and children’s books, which he is currently in the process of having published. “[Writing is] something that I absolutely love to do,” King said. “I’m working on a skate memoir. Boy, that’s going to be interesting!” King is also getting ready to share his musical talents with the re-lease of his album entitled “Run to Jesus.” The first single is scheduled for release in January 2009; the album will be released shortly thereafter. “It’s unique because I have compiled different types of music for everyone – R&B, country, blues, big band, and gospel,” shares King. “I

write and sing my own music. I wanted to show versatility. I hope my audience will like it or love it.” King is a veteran of the music industry having sung with several groups in-cluding, Melodious Sounds of Joy. “The R&B music that I sing is good stuff…things that you could sing at a wed-ding or that couples could relate to, he said. “I try to do things that would make my Mom be proud.” In fact, it was the memory of his late mother that in-spired him to host “King’s Rock Skate” annually at the Skate Ranch. “My mom wouldalways come to my house for Christmas dinner,” he said. “After she left me in 2003, you know, it felt as though life was over for me, but I knew that she didn’t want me to go out like that. King’s Rock Skate is a skate party that is held between Christmas and New Year’s. I host the event during the holidays because my family doesn’t do anything together and it’s nothing like being with my skate family. Last year, there was more than 440 people. What better way to actually spend the

Christmas season than with your skate family. That’s why I try to do a lot of bus trips and parties because I know that my Mom would be so proud of me bringing people together.” This year, King’s Rock Skate will be held on December 27, and King has great plans in store for those who attend. “I’m going to pull out some more stuff…I have some surprises for everybody this year,” he reveals. Just as his desire for unity, respect and hospitality are ingrained within him; King’s passion for skating is eternal. “Wheels and wood go together…that’s an automatic thing, he said. “Skating is just like going to the sanctuary…I guess you have to be in tuned with it. That passion for [skating] makes you get to the rink at least 15 minutes before it opens, you know, to relieve stress so that you can leave everything on the wood and have a good week. I skate for the love of it.” •
