It’s really prestigious and honourable to be the editor of our award-winning magazine “Xpressions”, which has turned out to be a strong mouthpiece of the company. I have perceived that our Magazine has

consistently stirred ways to collaborate and capture various activities and events taking place in the company. Chetan Bhagat has well said “Silence is no longer golden”. Yes, a unique company should start speaking, and “Xpressions” speaks of the unique features of a worldwide company.

“Your dream is your signature” - a simple theme from a recently released movie, talks well about our daily life with new experience full of challenges. The joy of sharing and shouldering innovative challenges fulfil our dream, which definitely turns out to be an outstanding signature. We can dream and express through this unique tome which is always ready to broadcast our simplest thoughts and dreams in the most vivid manner.

I, as the Chief of this writing scheme, would like to invite yet more ideas and dreams for this book to be used as the inspiration for the workforces of the company. I seek to bring in the unique features of our company to be a signature for fulfilling our aspirations and for being an instrument of rejuvenation for all.

Joining UAE Exchange, India, as the first Branch Head in 1999 and growing with the company in different capacities for the past 15 years, I feel happy and proud to trigger off as the Editor in Chief of “Xpressions”.

MD’s Message

V. George Antony MD & Country Head

Dear Colleagues,

Within 100 days in office of the new government, positive vibrations have started reflecting in the economy. Decision making has started falling in track, and the economy has started moving upwards gradually. I personally feel we will be able to see a growing economy in the days to come.

With the changes coming in the Finance and Banking Sector, and with more emphasis on technology integration and 4G, a reasonably cashless vibrant e-economy could be visualized in the horizon.

These changes will make a cultural impact in the way people live, take decisions, work, pay for expenses and utility bills, remit money, credit rating of people, avail credit from banks, do EMI payment process, etc.

We need to be alert and should start

thinking of these things seriously in order to make changes in the way we make convenience for our customers in each of our processes, keeping the next generation customers in mind.

Some of the changes that can happen in our day to day lives are:1. There will be a system to track the basic

details of every citizen through Aadhar card, which will be connected to all government and financial systems.

2. Staff will work on hand-held devises instead of computer or laptop so that many of them can work from home.

3. People will start using mobile video conversation rather than voice conversation.

4. Future systems will be able to scrawl the internet for many types of history data and get all the relevant and related information about a customer we are dealing with, and come out with solutions and options based on the tastes, desires and budgets of the customer.

These are the days, not of a dream, but of reality, we will see in the near future. So be aware and awake to be alive, or else to vanish from the coming disruptive e-economy.

Thank you.

The Festival of JoyOnam

17Xpressions - September 2014

Onam is the most significant festival of Kerala, celebrated irrespective

of caste, creed or religion. It falls in the months of August-September, which corresponds with a period known as Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam Calendar. Onam is regarded as a festival in remembrance of a bygone era of the reign of the mighty asura (demon) king, Mahabali. The story goes that during the reign of king Mahabali, one and all were happy and content. His people loved him so much, that the gods in the heavens became jealous of him. The people had all that they did not really need the gods anymore. They did not have anything to pray for. The Gods identified that unless Mahabali was eradicated, they would be obliterated. Lord Vishnu came to earth in the form of an ascetic, Vamanan, and headed straight to Mahabali’s court in the guise of a distressed monk. The monk only needed as much land as could be covered by his three steps which the king granted. As King Mahabali and all his courtiers watched in amazement and wonder, the ascetic grew in size, so big that with one foot he measured the earth and with the other all of heavens, until there was no more space left. So the King knelt down and bent his head offering up all he had for the monk. Measuring the last foot of space, Lord Vishnu put his feet on the King’s head ready to stamp him down into Hades. As he was being stamped down into hell, the King requested that once a year, for a day, he may be allowed to return to his land and people. He was granted this wish and then was quickly pushed down into hell. With the King went all that he had brought truth, justice, peace and joy. So now the people needed the gods again.Onam is regarded as the time when the King comes to see his land and his people, and is celebrated with pomp and vigour. The festival lasts ten full days with the celebrations getting grander by the day.

Folk performances including feasts, songs, dances, games, floral carpets, decorations, and processions are held all over the State. The ninth day or the day before Thiruvonam, also known as Uthradam, is a traditionally significant day. The day is important mostly for the agrarian society as the harvest and the rich produces add to the joy of the season. The Thiruvonam day sees the most elaborate preparations for celebrations beginning with early morning prayers, visit to the deity in the temple, cleaning and cleansing of the house and household. Everyone is dressed in their new and best clothes, called Onakodi.Thalapandukali, Kayyankali, Attakalam, Ambeyyal, Kutukudu, Kummattikali, Vallamkali, Puliikkali, and Pulikali are just a few of the many games played during the festival, signifying the tradition and culture of the people of Kerala. A lot of cheer and banter is the bottom line of the celebrations with every person in the household. Cultural programmes are, such as Athachamayam, Thiruvathira, and Theyyam also take place during the festival. The events are attended by a large group of folk artistes and performers, accompanied by traditional music and an entourage of elephants decorated from head to toe. The myth around Onam was woven by the imagination of the mind that was desperately seeking a time and season of joy, peace, prosperity and justice, a society that is ideal and selfless. It in fact, reminisces the days of distant past when compared to today’s woes, yesterdays’ were much smaller. Onam also sets forth a benchmark, which if we were wiser we would aspire to attain at all costs. It is the dream of the ordinary man, the desire of an average citizen wishing welfare of all, that any land and its people must strive towards. Today, Onam is no longer a religious festival but is celebrated by each Malayalee as a cultural festival.

HR Head’s NoteDear ColleaguesNegativity is a very familiar word used in various contexts. One such context I would like to focus here is “workplace negativity”. Negativity occurs in the attitude, outlook, talk of one department /branch member, or in a crescendo of voices responding to a workplace decision or event. The office should be a calm and productive place where employees can concentrate on their works. Negativity can derail the productivity train, causing employees to shift the focus to petty issues that have nothing to do with their jobs. Negative thinking has an immediate, destructive impact on your personal life too, because the moment you have a negative thought, it’s already hindering you from achieving something that you want, making you feel worse, adding negative value to your life in some way. If that’s the case, who will be benefitted from that?

Let’s talk positive!!Switching to positive thoughts is just a matter of making a conscious effort. To get rid of negative thoughts, you need not fight them, but rather replace them with positive ones, just like you can replace the beliefs that don’t serve you with those that do serve you.

Great minds rise above them.”Johnee Praveen R

the interpretation of an event. Two people might find that a given event results in quite different responses. For example, an after dinner speech might strike fear into the heart of an inexperienced speaker while a strong orator views it as a wonderful opportunity to share his thoughts. Understanding that the perceived negative effects of an event or task may be mentally manipulated and conditioned towards the positive, will allow you to be a peak performer in all instances.

Freeing Women from Themselves

Women’s Column

We celebrated the sixty seventh year of independence and freedom from the clutches of British rule. In the wake

of this, what can be said about the freedom and independence enjoyed by women in India today? How many women have come out from the outdated social restrictions? It is not that they haven’t, but the question is how many, when compared to men. Freeing women from this patriarchal society and placing them in equal levels with men in all aspects of their lives has been a favourite subject of writers, social activists, media, and social forums. It has to be appreciated that a lot of laws and amendments have been implemented to ensure protection of women from social discrimination and exploitation. More women are entering into higher positions in the society. Many are becoming bosses. But much of these developments are happening among urban women. Just as the poor is becoming poorer, and the rich is becoming richer, the free and independent women are becoming more independent (which is good), and the exploited women in the underdeveloped areas are getting more exploited (which is not good).Even while flipping through the pages of women’s success stories, we know there is a force pulling them down. And this is their subconscious minds. Years of subjugation has embedded in them an idea that women belong at home

and should be protected by men – an interpretation so misunderstood, often intentionally, that it takes away the basic rights of women. But more often, women are more submerged in the pool of restrictions laid on themselves by their own subconscious minds than they are in the pool of restrictions laid down by the patriarchal society. “If a girl grows up, marries and becomes a wife, her life in inside the house”. How many would have noticed this dialogue by Georgekutty in the recently hit Malayalam movie “Drishyam”? I was offended. But thanks to Geetha Prabhakar for counterbalancing the socially held belief that women belong at home. Georgekutty is not the only person who is of this view. There are thousands of Georgekuttys in India, and tens of thousands of female Georgekuttys, which is the saddest part of the story.

Women, especially in the rural areas, should collectively take decisions to learn and grow, contribute to the economy, and lead a respectful life without waiting for the approval of the society. Women need to come out of the shell, stand bold about their decisions, and take the challenge to prove them right. Women should free themselves from their own minds.Ann Susan PaulBusiness Communication

Special Days

World Ozone Day16th September

The International Day for the Prevention of Ozone Layer was designed by the United Nations General

Assembly in 1994, to commemorate the day in 1987 when the nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The ozone layer protects the planet from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of sun rays. The controlled use of ozone-depleting substances has contributed significantly to the global efforts to address climate change, and the ozone layer is expected to recover around the middle of this century. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Ozone Layer Protection: The Mission Goes On”.

World Tourism Day27th September

The World Tourism Day was designed by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 1980. The

Day is created to spread awareness on the role of tourism and its effects on social, cultural, political, and economic values worldwide. The timing of the Day comes at the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere when tourism is on the minds of millions of people worldwide. Each year, a host country is designated as the UNWTO’s partner in the celebration of World Tourism Day. In 2014, Mexico is the partner of UNWTO.

Teachers’ Day5th September

India has been celebrating Teacher’s Day on 5th September since 1962, commemorating the birthday of former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakhrishnan. He was a philosopher

and a teacher, who believed that “teachers should be the best minds in the country”.This day is celebrated to show our acknowledgement and recognition of the hard work put in by our teachers for our development. On this day, students take the roles of teachers. They also give gifts to their most admired teachers. It is an equally special day for teachers, as they get to know how much they are liked and appreciated by their students.
