XOS Events NABC and WBCA Recap

NABC and WBCA RecapLast week XOS showcased its latest basketball technol-

ogies at the National Association of Basketball Coaches Convention and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Convention.

XOS demonstrated Thunder Bas-ketball HD, Thunder Courtside Coach HD, and HD Replay and Re-view at both shows. This was the first year that XOS exhibited a fully piloted HD solution – a system that provides more detailed analysis. In addition, the ability to stream live content from a remote camera to an iPad, as well as the debut of a revamped XOS Courtside Coach, atrracted a lot of attention because

be headed into the playoffs in the Western Conference. In the East-ern Conference, the Indiana Pacers and the Orlando Magic continue to pave their way into the playoffs.

The Indiana Pacers have become one of the biggest champions for XOS Thunder Basketball in the past year.

The team eagerly awaited the tran-sition from the legacy XOS Direc-tor platform to XOS Thunder, and even decided to sign the agreement prior to the NBA lockout ending.

In addition to XOS Thunder, the Pac-ers added XOS Lightning into the team’s daily preparation. XOS Light-ning enables video coaches to dis-tribute video to the rest of the coach-ing staff and players for review from their home computers and iPads.

of the great interest coaches have in technologies that enbable in-stantaneous corrective instruction. Lastly, HD Replay and Review had an extremely strong showing as they maintain status as the most intuitive instant replay solutions on the market.

At NABC, XOS contin-ued its sponsorship of Rising Coach-es Elite, an organization whose goal is to foster a close-knit commu-nity among college men’s basket-ball coaches, while helping them to grow, improve and advance in the profession. At WBCA, XOS partici-pated in two educational sessions

for video coordinators to network and share expert insight regarding film exchange and editing systems. For more information on XOS Bas-ketball products, click here.

Industry Insider

This has been an exciting time for many XOS partner teams as they have made

great strides to update and outfit their facilities with the latest digital video technologies. For XOS staff members, the opportunity to de-velop new technologies and solu-tions that meet the unique goals of the company’s partners brings great satisfaction along with it every day.

XOS recently completed a hand-ful of A/V integration projects in practice facilities that include Purdue, Temple, Virginia Como-nwealth, Southern Methodist University and the Golden State Warriors. Systems included new video rooms, team meeting rooms,

coaches’ offices and locker rooms, among other key team areas.

XOS and Purdue University teamed up to provide an extensive digital facelift to the Mackey Arena and its coaching facilities.

The arena’s entrance has been transformed from just a thorough-fare to an interactive digital Hall of Fame that features the history of Purdue basketball as well as a current look at each of Purdue’s athletic teams. Upon entering the arena, donors now receive and iPad on game days. With the new custom XOS Purdue replay app installed on the iPad, donors can watch slow-motion instant replays

Changes to DIRECTV Software

Recently, DIRECTV released a new menu system for all its re-ceivers. Unfortunately, this also

caused some issues when attempt-ing to record games through XOS Scheduler. Specifically, DIRECTV’s Guide shows the same channel num-

XOS Digital plans to upgrade all XOS Thunder users to the Eagle Eye Dashboard

monitoring system. Eagle Eye moni-tors different network aspects to allow XOS Support to proactively send alerts and prevent problems.

The software identifies three sta-tus levels: “All OK,” “Warning” and “Error.” In the cases of “Warning” or “Error” an e-mail is automatical-ly sent out to both the video staff and XOS support. Eagle Eye moni-tors hardware (temperature, drive space and 3 Ware alerts), systems (online/offline status, computer model, RAM, last reboot, client and hemi versions installed), sync (sync status and sync scheduler)

and surge (monitors and manages all surge sets).

The University of Arkansas used Ea-gle Eye in the past through its XOS Lightning subscription. One summer day, Andy Wagner, director of sports video, received an e-mail from Eagle Eye and a phone call from XOS Sup-port to inform him that his server’s temperature was high. Wagner sent his assistant to check on the situ-

ation. They discovered that the air conditioner went out in the entire building and, as a result of Eagle Eye monitoring, were aware of the situ-ation before anyone in the Mainte-nance department.

Eagle Eye is just one way XOS will expand its 24/7/365 support cov-erage. Customers will receive a call from XOS Support to upgrade shortly.

Customer SpotlightUniversity of Kentucky Basketball

University of Kentucky’s video coordinator, Tim Asher, re-members the day in 2005

when XOS acquired Pinnacle Team Sports (PTS). UK had been a PTS client at the time, but Asher recalls that XOS transitioned smoothly and established a strong founda-tion of communication and col-laborative partnership. Since then, UK has worked very closely with XOS to secure a wide variety of necessary digital media resources to keep its operations cutting edge.

Kentucky’s basketball program has traditionally earned great success due to its plethora of talent. How-ever, Asher also attributes a large portion of this success to the daily operations that take place behind the scenes. By combining top-notch talent with advanced train-ing and facility technologies, UK has experienced countless suc-cesses for years.

UK deploys a comprehensive ap-proach to its operational technolo-gies. For instance, XOS Digital re-designed the university’s practice facility with a new technology infrastructure which included new cameras, a control room and XOS Thunder integration.

Asher defines XOS Thunder as the “true backbone” to the operation. Both the men’s and women’s basket-ball teams use XOS Thunder to en-

hance the video editing process. The coaches rely on this technology for the most efficient use of highlights and cut ups during player meetings. Quality video is essential as they re-view plays and evaluate opponent teams’ strengths and weaknesses. XOS Thunder also helps to compile and categorize player highlights when composing scouting profiles.

XOS Digital also provides a wide variety of technology products for other Kentucky sports including its football program. Kentucky Football currently uses XOS Thunder Foot-ball, Hurricane Replay, and had a new control room and video boards in-stalled last year.

“We really consider XOS to be a trusted technology partner,” Asher said. He recalls a time when XOS came through for a lens purchase. Due to international shipping issues, the lenses did not arrive by their deadline. While the onus fell upon the shipping service, the XOS team wanted to ensure that UK had an

immediate solution, so it improvised and rented lenses for UK’s in-venue video boards. It was just one of sev-eral instances when XOS demon-strated its integrity and how much it valued the partnership with UK.

Asher and the rest of the athletic department have turned to XOS frequently during the past several years for everything from technical inquiries to exploration of innova-tive concepts to collaborating on new ways to reach out to its cur-rent and emerging fan base. Cur-rently UK is piloting XOS Thunder HD 2012.

“HD is a general reality now, and thanks to XOS it is right at our doorstep for basketball operations,” Asher said.

XOS appreciates the privilege of working with UK Athletics and looks forward to its continued rela-tionship in the upcoming years.
