Editorial

The Harbury Parish Council has decided to redesign its website, employing a company that has developed a number of neighbouring parish websites. The Parish Clerk, in an article, is inviting local village groups to have links to their own websites. The information that we can supply will help to make a website that Harbury can be proud of, so do please think about including your organisation on this site. Ladbroke’s website will soon be up and running. It is disturbing to read in the Parish Council reports that there have been a number of thefts in the locality. We would urge villagers to be vigilant, particularly to keep car keys well away from the front door. Finally we have two letters from Harbury residents’ complaining about dog faeces. We would implore all dog owners to act responsibly when walking their dogs by clearing up after them, making good use of the newly installed waste bins.

In January’s Family Communion presentation that much loved character, Ronnie, was the star. Wishing to impress his teacher, Miss Pringle, he worked hard, ran errands, was quite extraordinarily good

he was drawn into company and escapades of which Miss Pringle would certainly not have approved. Engaged in a final dare, Ronnie was clipped by a car and who came to his aid? - Miss Pringle, closely followed by the Headmaster, who called her by her Christian name, Grace. “Well,” thought Ronnie, “Amazing Grace!”

5John Stringer reminded us that that is what Jesus gives us. Often we fail Him, sometimes we follow Him, but however hard we try, we can earn nothing: we are simply blessed by the gift of His amazing grace.Lent is almost upon us. Please watch out for the many services which will lead us through our preparation for Easter. There are also simple Lent Lunches at 12.30pm each Friday in the Tom Hauley Room, beginning on February 8th. Proceeds go to a charity yet to be decided, but in recent years they have been voted overseas. As you know, the parishes of Harbury and Ladbroke have a new priest and we now have a date for the Reverend Craig’s licensing. It will take place at Pentecost, Sunday 11th May at 3.00pm in All Saints’ Harbury. We look forward with great excitement to this day of celebration. Meanwhile, please keep him, his wife, Su, and their children, Jessica and Elliot, in our prayers as they prepare to come among us.

Mothers’ UnionW) Gillian Hare

As usual, for us January was party month! The afternoon meeting welcomed three visitors from Ladbroke, enjoyed a quiz about sweets, poems read by Liz Bunting and a mouth watering tea. The evening party was attended by thirty five members and friends, who enjoyed another quiz - with a RED theme, music by Michael Hare, and a lavish supper. We do know how to enjoy ourselves. Thank you to everyone who supported our coffee morning on the 26th.

Future dates.Friday March 7th - Women’s World Day of Prayer, 2.00pm in church, all welcomeSunday March 9th - Wedding Fair at Stoneythorpe Hotel, at which the Mother’s Union will have a stall.Next afternoon meeting:Wednesday February 6th - Service in church at 2.00pm will include the Imposition of Ashes to mark Ash Wednesday at 2.30pm. Please bring a hat to the meeting and be ready to say something about it and the memories it arouses - only if you wish to, of course!Evening meeting - Tuesday February 19th, communion at 7.30pm. At 8.00pm Helen Robertson will talk about ‘Handbags’. All are welcome.

kv Mothering Sunday BAlison Abbott

With Easter coming early this year, Mothering Sunday falls on March 2nd. To celebrate, there will be a service at 10.30am. This will be in church so there will be lots of room for any small people who aren’t too good at sitting still. Presented by the First Light team, the service will be short and informal and everyone is welcome. On Sunday 2nd February, First Light is titled ‘Flipping Pancakes’! This will be in he Tom Hauley room at 10.30am following coffee from 10.00am.

Toddler’s ServiceLorna Bedford

The theme for our January service was the story of the miracle when Jesus restored sight to the blind beggar Bartimaeus.Mrs Marion Dickerson led our presentation and asked the children to guess what was in a wrapped Christmas present. They were asked to handle the present and feel the weight to help with their guesses. A box of biscuits was then revealed. Then Mrs Dickerson produced a large Christmas stocking filled with toys and requested that each child in turn dip into the stocking and guess which toy they had selected from the stocking, again just using their hands to feel the toy.Mrs Dickerson explained to the children how important our hands are when we cannot use our eyes.We sang the song, ‘He gave me eyes so I could see’, accompanied by Mr Michael Hare on his accordion, and after a thank you prayer for our eyes and hands, we drew a line around our hands on a piece of paper. We then had our refreshments and played for a while until it was time to go home. Please note the date of our next Toddlers Service is Tuesday 19th February, at 2.00pm in the church. All toddlers and babies accompanied by an adult are welcome to join us.

Matters Arising - Ladbroke Village Website will soon be up and running. Organisations in the village have been contacted so that their details can be put on the website. Two organisations have already responded.

Buses are no longer turning into Harbury Road from Deppers Bridge en route to Bishops Itchington. The Highways department are aware of the concrete blocks alongside Deppers Bridge Farm.

Police Report - P.C Katrina Taylor reported that a trailer had been stolen in Ladbroke this week (14th January); also three dwellings have been raided in Long Itchington. The break-ins are mainly for car keys and Katrina was very concerned that householders were aware of this; anything else that was taken was just opportunist. The criminals are wearing High-Viz jackets so that they look as though they are about officially. Southam is talking about having alcohol free areas.P.C Taylor also stressed the organisation P.A.C.T (Police and Community Together) meetings are held quarterly in Southam and any member of the general public is welcome to attend if they have any concerns they wish to raise. The next meeting is in April (I will get the exact date for the next Harbury and Ladbroke News).Speed cameras have been checking the by-pass and it is intended they will be used again.Smartwater is a very good crime deterrent. The fact that it costs £15 to buy is putting people off. Ladbroke needs 20 people to use the Smartwater before we can put a sign up saying “Smartwater area”.Planning Applications - An extension to Newlands, Windmill Lane, has been granted, as has a three bay garage at Manor Farm. Permission has been granted to remove branches of a tree adjacent to power lines at the Sycamores, a Chestnut tree re pollarded at Rose Cottage and the thinning of Yew tree crowns at the Croft. Planning applications from Dovecote and Old Barn Farm have been withdrawn.Highways and Drainage - The drains along Banbury Road are silted up and need clearing. Flood Defence Officer, Dave Tilley, will be meeting with the contractors scheduled to carry out clearance of Lot Brook following letters sent to the reparian landowners.Parish Plan - This is nearing completion. The sticking point at the moment is the Flousing Survey. What are the needs for affordable housing? The Parish Council have to consider this too.Village Hall and Millennium Green - Both of these amenities have been granted £500 each from the Parish Funds. The Millennium Green has been awarded a grant of £10000 towards new playground equipment from Stratford District Council.

District Councillors Report - The Best Kept Village competition is to change. The villages will no longer be judged solely on how they look, but also on the community spirit and what organisations are active within the village.

10The Council Tax will rise by 3.5% - which the Councillor said was no rise at all and that “cuts would have to be made”.The Warwickshire County Councillor sent in his report. Ufton Landfill site has withdrawn its application for use as an incineration plant centre. There have been too many objections.Deppers Bridge weight restriction could be permanent. There is talk of building a footbridge over the railway, so withdrawing the need for traffic lights. The heavy traffic using the Ladbroke to Bishops Itchington Road (Ladbroke Road or Folly) is to be assessed. The precept for 2008/9 will be £4600 up £100, the first rise for three years. The discussion on the size and use of the noticeboard will be continued. The Annual Village meeting is on Wednesday April 16th at 7.30pm.The next Parish Council meeting is on Wednesday February 19th at 7.45pm in the Village Hall. Our Parish Clerk, Colette Bell has handed in her resignation. She was thanked for all her efforts over the last 3 years. This was very sad news for all of the Parish Councillors. The meeting closed at 9.27pm!

Official minutes can be viewed in the Library on the Parish Council website www.harbury-parish.co.uk or obtained from the Parish ClerkThe innovation of Public Participation at the start means that people can have their say and not sit through the whole proceedings. Mind you now that Chairman Tim Lockley makes meetings go with a swing, Councillors and audience could be in the pub by 9.30pm.Janet Thornley had the plans for the BMX track on display. The only comments by neighbours related to the boundary hedge which the PC intended to improve. Cllrs were pleased to see four lads attending to ask questions; like when will it be built? The answer is probably not until next year. Planning Permission, for which the PC will pay, has to be obtained; funding of at least £20,000 has to be raised. Only then, when ground conditions, are suitable can construction begin. Although the Parish Council supports the initiative, the cost will not fall on the parish. Funds must be raised and the lads suggested holding a sponsored bike race.Pc Hill reported that there had been a fracas at the Youth Club and that he had undertaken visits to the homes of those involved. Since the beginning of the year; a car had been stolen from Percival Drive; a person was arrested following a scuffle at the Crown and a window was broken at the Old Post Office. There had been a burglary in Neales Close before Christmas and four others in his area. Thefts from farms was a worrying trend but he was delighted with the success of the Community Support Officer dedicated to the Service Area and the PC agreed to send in a letter of appreciation for the appointment.Next our District and County Councillors had their say, Andrew Patrick (SDC) had taken up the complaint of Arthur Turner that the administration charge for grants to alter homes for disabled people had been increased. The ruling group however would not budge. He forced the Courier to print a correction to their piece about the Quarries Masterplan which suggested new planning applications had been agreed. Shop workers now park behind the Wight School to ease High St congestion.Bob Stevens (WCC) reassured Cllrs that there were many objections to the Ufton Tip proposals, and alerted them to the application for materials recycling at Island Farm. Leamington Polo Ground has to do

more work on its Masterplan. There would be an evaluation of the experimental HGV ban at Deppers Railway Bridge. He urged the PC to respond to the A & B road Speed Review which they duly did - supporting most suggested changes.A number of small grant schemes had been set up by the County with £30,000 for public realm improvements, £7,000 for Eco-awareness Days, £20,000 for Village Welcome Packs or local information projects. The One Stop Shop being installed at Southam Library would mean six day opening.PLANNINGStratford Granted Permission for alterations to the School Staffroom; a porch at 1 High St; pruning the Yew at 2 Mill St; extensions at 6 Dickens Rd and 6 Constance Drive, changes, with conditions at 36 Binswood End and the rebuilding of the stable block at 8 Chapel St. They granted permission for the rebuilding of Harbury Croft.Harbury made no representation on an extension at 19 Manor Rd; a double garage at the Bungalow, Mill St and a smoking shelter at the Great Western Pub. They asked that the new building proposed at Stapenhall Farm should be for domestic use only and commented that the Crown Inn application was retrospective. They objected to Extension to the Ufton Landfill Site on a number of grounds including lorry movements, visual impact, noise, highways considerations, poor consultation and unproven need.Cllrs Thompson and Thornley had visited waste disposal and composting sites similar to that planned for Ufton and found them well managed. On this and other potential developments in the area there was real concern that the cumulative effect of traffic generation would have a huge impact on Harbury and other villages in the area. The PC wants to work with its neighbours to highlight this and seek solutions.PROPERTIESThe regular Play Area inspection means more maintenance work has been set in train. The new Car Park Bollards are installed and ancient notices will be removed. One says “No Golf Allowed”. It’s prohibited in the By-laws but who would think they could play golf there? The Community Support Officer would be asked to stay on later at the Carnival this year to ensure no recurrence of the "Rave” disturbances. Councillors decided against the installation of CCTV and several Cllrs said they wanted to spend money on positive improvements. District Cllr Patrick recommended Ladbroke’s planned Adventure Trail for older children.

FINANCESAdditions to the budget - continuing care for parish trees; increased costs for lighting and grounds maintenance; support for the Village Hall; and money set aside for grants to village organisations resulted in a precept of £58,666, up 21/2%, or £1.30p a YEAR for Band D payers. The Council agreed the quote from Arrowscape Designs to improve their Website which will have links to SDC, WCC and village organisations, some of whom would be offered their own pages, making it much more of a community website than before. All your Councillors will be up for re-election in May and were informed that it is their own responsibility to ensure that their photos and profiles are handed into the Harbury News in time for the April issue. They agreed to challenge SDC’s estimate for the coming elections where we appear to be charged twice for the hire of the Hall, once for Harbury and again for Deppers Bridge!

Harbury Parish Council Quarterly ReportIn the past three months the Parish Council has:

• Installed bollards to prevent unauthorised vehicles driving on the playing fields

• Repaired the damaged tarmac under the swings

• Carefully monitored the impact of the weight restriction the station bridge at Deppers Bridge.

• Seen the final adoption of the masterplan for Bishops Bowl Lakes by SDC.

• Made representations about Biffa's plans to extend the Ufton landfill site.

Installed extra dog bins in the village

Has, with the help of County Cllr Bob Stevens, secured funding from WCC for a feasibility study on the need for traffic calming in the village.

By the time you read this we should have had our fill of Haggis, Tatties and Neaps at the Burns Night at the Dog and learned the difference between Tipsy Laird and Crachen as well as playing silly games and struggling with John Hancock’s more academic questions on Scotland and Robbie Burns. So the next event for the Harbury Society will be a talk on Monday 25lh February (7.30 for 8pm) in the Tom Hauley Room. Our speaker on Local Market Towns is Bob Bearman the recently retired archivist for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Please bring your own drink.Well what an enjoyable talk Mary Thompson and Lin Hayes gave on “Our Life in Teaching”. It was the only job Mary ever wanted to do. Lin, on the other hand wanted to be a ballet dancer but injury stopped that. They told us about the different schools they worked at and the good and bad experiences of teaching at different times. Mary worked at Primary schools and was at Napton, Harbury and finally Head Teacher at St James, Southam. Lin taught in Coventry and different parts of Warwickshire. St Pauls in Leamington was one and she was Head Teacher at Quinton.Over the past 25 years or so there have been great changes as people have noted. Mary and Lin had to go through all of these changes, lack of money, shortage of equipment, changes of teaching etc, but have survived. Pleased to note that things started to improve and they always found it rewarding to see scholars read and write.Their experiences were so interesting and thoroughly recommend the way they related them.February speaker: Dr John Hancock - General Practice in Harbury 1969.

Our annual Hangover Tour (on New Year's Day) of the sights of Harbury raised £75 this year. Thank you to all who contributed. The proceeds were donated to the International Red Cross. One or two of our newer members danced with us for the first time in public, so you may have been privileged to witness that.We have recently had an influx of new members, and if you are wondering about this method of getting some exercise in jovial company, then now is the time to join as you'll join a few other learners. We meet in the School Hall at 8.00 pm each Wednesday and usually retire to the Shakespeare at 10.00 pm.Some recent research was reported in the European Heart Journal. It concerned lifestyle and risk of heart disease. Significant among the findings was that people who don't take any exercise and who don't drink alcohol had the highest risk, 49% higher than people who exercised or drank or both. The lowest risk was for those who combined moderate alcohol consumption with regular exercise. Morris Dancers have been preaching the benefits of their lifestyle for decades, so it is good to hear it backed by research. You might catch us helping to entertain some German and Finnish visitors to the School on 26th January, or your next chance to see us perform locally will be at 5.00 am on May 1st at Chesterton Windmill for our traditional welcome to spring. But there's no need to wait till then... drop in one Wednesday.

With both teams evenly matched, there were few clear-cut chances with both defences playing well. However Cropedy managed to scramble a goal late on in the match, and whilst Harbury continued to press for an equaliser, they could not break down the Cropedy defence. With defences dominating, Thomas Conway and Ted Easton battled well but man of the match went to William Rea for outstanding game in goal.

18:. Under 11’s - Probably Harbury’s best performance of the season in a closely fought contest. Full back William Winchester ran onto the ball from Scrum Half Ted Easton and powered through 3 tackles to score. Playing down hill in the second half Harbury’s forwards won ball against larger opposition and set up a try for outside centre Bradley King. Second row and joint Men of the Match Sam Cave and Finn Toner were awesome in the mauls and kept Broad Street pinned back for much of the half.In an identical move to the first try William Winchester ran through for the third touch down. He also kicked two conversions in the 19-0 victory.Under 12’s - Once again Harbury were well beaten by the combination of big powerful forwards and fast backs as Broad Street ran out winners 56-0. Man of the Match for Harbury was Ben Darlison. The last week before Christmas break we had a fun coaching session and party with the children ending with sausage and chips and a selection box each. The Under 17’s played a ‘Tag’ rugby game against the coaches which ended in a 12 all draw. Try scorers for the ‘Old Boys’ were Mark Gladwin and Peter Rollason. Our first match in January against Alcester and Berkswell & Balsall had to be cancelled due to waterlogged pitches. Next match we are away at Daventry.

windy morning. In this match Kate Young and Louise Street made quick work of the opposition ladies and Geoff Prince and Colin Mercer also had a comfortable win in the men’s doubles. The pattern was repeated in the mixed doubles giving Harbury maximum points. This strengthened the team’s position at the top of the league with 5 matches left to play.

The “B” team are having a more difficult time in Division 4 and have lost both matches this year. The start of the first, at home against Warwick “C” was delayed while the Harbury 4 (Caroline Morland, Sue Mercer, Steve Stark and Colin Mercer) energetically brushed a thick frost off the courts. This was obviously too much as they then suffered a 2-6 defeat! Steve and Colin halved their rubber and Steve also halved his mixed doubles with Caroline but unfortunately Warwick were too strong in the others. This was followed by another defeat away, this time 3-5 against Deddington, with Cindy Sabin and Keith Thompson replacing Colin and Sue who were on Villa Park duty!! The team are now one place above the relegation zone with 4 matches left to play.In the floodlit league Harbury are maintaining a mid table position in Division 3. The only match this month was against a strong Kings Sutton team at home. The team got off to a slow start and Caroline Morland and partner Eira Owen and Paul Crowton with Jonathan Smith losing their first sets without disturbing the scorer! It improved in the second set but not enough to stop the visitors having a commanding 4-0 lead at the interval. In the mixed doubles Caroline and Paul were well beaten but Eira and Jonathan salved some pride with a good 6-4, 6-2 win.The men’s doubles team is having a good

in Division 5 of the Stratford andseasonDistrict league and are currently in second place despite losing 0-4 in the top of the table clash at Alcester. However, it was very encouraging that youngsters Jonathan Guy and Adam Crossling nearly pulled off a surprise win in one of their rubbers, just losing the third set decider 5-7.

The Junior programme has re-started and we welcome a new LTA licensed coach to the Club, Godwin Abah who is taking 3 sessions on Mondays. This is in addition to the 9 sessions Linda Casement and Eira Owen and we now offer a total of 121/2

Staff & Committee

The children returned to Pre-School ready for the new term and full of stories of Christmas and the New Year. We are very pleased to welcome to Martha and Charlie, who joined us in January and have already settled in with their new friends. Alice Best also joined us for a week on work experience and quickly became a firm friend of the children.

j

i lIn anticipation ofCold weathersome cold wintry weather, the book area became our winter wonderland,

-■

and the children were delighted to find ice in the water tray - Eleanor: “It’s slippy and making my hands cold".We have been looking at cold colours in our creative areas, with some lovely collages and paintings now on display. However, the mild wet and windy weather brought other delights in the form of paddling in puddles (and getting extremely wet in the process!), flying kites made from shopping bags and string, and making wonderful puddle pictures. We also talked about the weather, with some lovely descriptions of the walk to Pre-School one wet morning - Jennie: “It was puddly" and Harry: “It went pitter patter on my head". Games were played, sorting a variety of clothes into suitcases for winter or summer holidays as appropriate.

5IClothes Shop - The role play area has

been turned into a clothes shop with the children writing shopping lists and price tags and then taking turns at being customers and shop assistants.Much trying on took place, as well as using the telephones to check with friends that the right colours or sizes were being purchased.

23Tea Bag Splosh - The children had a great time experimenting with tea bags instead of paintbrushes, using very thin paint in a variety of "cold” colours. The result was a fabulous design on canvas, which is currently on display, but will probably be eventually sold to the highest bidder!Textures - After the ice in the water tray, first cellulose paste was used and then cornflour with water, to allow the children to investigate the different textures. The paste was described by Harry as: “It feels like soap”, while Hattie said: “It’s all squidgy and soft”. The children were fascinated when they found the very soft dry cornflour became quite hard when water was added, but then liquefied again when picked up - Ishbel: “It’s hard and soft at the same time”.

Planting Activityanticipation of Mothers’ Day, the children have been planting bulbs and learning how to care for them so they will have a wonderful plant to take home in March. Thanks to the Tawneys of Green Scheme for giving us the plant pots for this activity.

Another full room for our January speaker. Fiona Hopes gave us a most interesting talk accompanied by marvellous slides about working as a Garden Designer.

She first of all gave a brief resume of her career. She has been a designer for the last 23 years but prior to that she gained a degree in Science, then worked for 8 years in Local Government but then decided to have a radical career change. She began working in a 46 acre garden under the guidance of an ex National Trust Head Gardener, he then retired after she had only been there for 10 months so she was rather thrown in at the deep end. Eventually the gardens were sold to Simon Hornby who became chair of the RHS. Having gained an RHS diploma in garden design, at this juncture she decided to set up her own business. Her approach is, as she said herself, not just a quick fix but a long term project for her clients. She very much gardens with nature and the surroundings of the various sites. Her environmentally friendly approach offers her clients sustainable and low maintenance gardens. After measuring the garden to get a feel of the land and to take on board her client’s wishes, ensuring that sheds and greenhouses are not too far away for ease of access, she is then able to proceed with the design.

Her design principles are scale and proportion, then movement and flexibility, contrast with repetition of planting, and elements of surprise with maybe a focal point. Her plants replicate nature and she ensures that there is all year round interest too. Her motto of 'right plant right place’ makes perfect sense. Also there are complementary plants to tempt the bees and various beneficial insects, again a replication of nature. Her enthusiasm was obvious and this was reflected in her choice of slides, with ideas for planting. Her designs too were not too complicated with something in each of them that we could all take on board. In addition she has found time to write four books, two of which she brought along with her, one was about pruning, a subject close to her heart, and the other was about bonsai. The other two are being published this year. As she lives in Malvern she finished her slides with the most fantastic views of the Malvern Hills from her garden to demonstrate that nature is all around us. With views like these no wonder she is inspired.

The next meeting on February 5th when Michael Ecob will be talking about Rutland, one of England’s lesser known counties. I will be looking forward to this talk having visited Barnsdale Gardens and seeing what other delights there are to appreciate and visit.A brief mention about March meeting on 4th when the delightful Duncan Coombes from Pershore College will be talking about plant hunting with his students in South Western China. I am spoiling you all this season! The snowdrops will soon be putting in an appearance and one place to appreciate this spectacle is at Painswick Rococo Gardens which we visited about 3 years ago. It is a most amazing sight, do visit if you can. The gardens are open daily between 11.00am and 5.00pm. I’m hoping to book the services of Paul Moir who has been responsible for the transition of these very important gardens to give us a talk in 2008/9. Also for snowdrops I can recommend Dial Park at Chaddesley Corbett which is open from mid February. Judy Berrow showed us slides of this garden which is included in the Worcestershire open gardens in the famous Yellow Book. If you picked up a leaflet details are in that. If you haven't visited Whichford Pottery yet, another most interesting venue, you can see the pots being made and decorated. There is a chance to buy from the new Octagon shop and food is available at weekends. Well worth a trip out and not too far.

Day and evening trips will be announced at the February meeting so there is still so much yet to come. Look forward to seeing you all.

Today, (Tuesday 15th January) is wet and windy but the temperature at noon was 12°C which is not very seasonal. I took a circuitous route on my bike to Daventry in order to look at Kentle Wood (as mentioned in last month’s article). To outflank the hills of Shuckburgh and Staverton and avoid the A425, I travelled along the A426 (the old turnpike road from Southam to Dunchurch) before turning right for Broadwell and Grandborough. At Broadwell, the black sheep were in their usual field. Mr. Deeming at Home Farm, whose wife tends the breed, told me they were Dutch and known as Zwartblef. Soon (on 1st March to be exact) they will start lambing and I strongly recommend a visit. Broadwell’s small church is dedicated to The Good Shepherd’ which seems appropriate. Near the hamlet of Sawbndge, I crossed the

27infant Learn, though it was widening by the hour. St Nicholas Church at Willoughby was locked, a pity as it was raining and I’d been looking forward to some shelter. I met a man out walking who said most of the local churches were locked due to an increase in thefts.Turning right on the A45, Braunston, with its transport links old and new, came into view. The road crosses the Oxford Canal and then the Grand Union in quick succession. Braunston was also close to two railway lines, now closed. One, the Great Central was the last big railway route, of the Victorian era, to open in this country. The date was 1890. It ran from London to Sheffield. Its direct approach, with many tunnels, embankments and cuttings, rather than a meandering course, would make it an ideal route for high speed trains if the route from the Continent is extended beyond St Pancras.I find Daventry a confusing place with its multiplicity of roundabouts and bypasses. Later, I reached Kentle Wood (Grid ref.555625 - OS sheet 152) and had a soggy stroll. The wood lies at the end of Browns Road adjacent to Fords’ vast depot. The 30 acre site is a joint venture between the Woodland Trust and Daventry District Council. It is one of many such woods begun to mark the Millennium. Kentle was planted by local children and lies at 160 metres (530ft) with views west into Warwickshire at Flecknoe and south to the wooded heights of the appropriately named Big Hill (215 metres/690ft). This area is the watershed of central England. Within a few miles, streams commence their journeys to the North Sea (Nene), the Atlantic (Learn) and the Thames Estuary (Cherwell). Most Oaks were about 5ft in height and had kept a good number of their leaves which were now a crinkled brown. Ash, a quicker growing tree, were leafless and some 9ft in height. Field Maple, Hazel, Hawthorn, Silver Birch a few Beech and Willow will mature in time to bring a rich understory of plants and insects to the wood which will repay a visit in the spring. Already some Hazel catkins were open and the yellow pollen stood out amongst the greys and browns of winter. As I was leaving to begin the ride home, a pair of Green Woodpeckers flew across the scene with their typical roller-coaster flight and yaffle. The sun came out briefly and I saw one bird’s distinctive green, yellow and red plumage. The way home, again to avoid the rather bicycle unfriendly A425, was via Staverton with its impressive Jurassic Limestone church and narrow central street which was like entering a castle. Quiet, wet lanes took me through Catesby of Gunpowder Plot fame and Hellidon. I reentered Warwickshire on the Welsh Road and glimpsed Boddington

28Reservoir away to the south before plunging down into Priors Marston and on to Southam where surely the spire of St James’ Church must have been used as a marker by the old drovers.Geoff Thorpe came to tell me he had seen numbers of Golden Plovers mixed with a flock of Lapwings in a field towards Harewoods House. It’s said that 300,000 or 30% of the European population winter in Britain. Some visit coastal marshes but many move inland.Sharon and I had a lucky break recently. We had decided on a walk, and chose one of the best winter days so far. It was Saturday January 12th; cold, sunny and with no wind to speak of. We drove just over the county border into Gloucestershire and started our walk at Broad Campden. The hills were covered in snow whilst the field paths near home would have been heavy going after all the rain. A narrow valley took us up to the Cotswold plateau at 250metres/820ft. Pheasant and Partridge abounded (we were on the Northwick Park Estate). I found a fossil bivalve in a piece of Oolitic limestone. Later, we toasted ourselves before a fire in the Crown Inn, Blockley. There were some treacherous ice sheets in the village streets and hopeful children were out with sledges. Leaving the village up the path through the woods of the warren, we noticed Bluebell leaves some 2” high in sheltered spots and thought of the coming spring.More on the village Tawny Owls. Jim Chappie reports hearing them close to his house in Sutcliffe Drive.

Village Hall UpdateChris Finch

The start to the New Year has been and gone, but there will still be those who are making resolutions for the rest of the year. The Village Hall committee have pledged to continue making an effort to secure additional funding on behalf of the village, so that 2008 sees some improvements to some areas of the premises. The New Year’s dance raised some much needed funds to maintain the Hall, but far greater sums are required to modernise some of the facilities. The aim of the committee is to provide a building which serves all the community to the greatest advantage. In the past few months ‘Moving Pictures’ have been introduced into the calendar, as a means of offering film shows to those who may find it difficult to go to a cinema in a nearby town or who may find it too expensive to take several

29members of a family. So far, attendance at the shows has been quite impressive and hopefully the word will get round that there is a good afternoon’s (or night’s) entertainment to be found in the village. For those who haven’t yet ventured out, it is worth mentioning that a very large screen is erected in the main Hall; recent films are shown and the sound quality is good. If this isn’t enough to tempt people to join the increasing audiences maybe the thought of a licensed bar, tea/ coffee and cakes and a raffle will add to the attraction of a village show.A considerable number of people have been involved in setting up this initiative and thanks are particularly due to Rob Darlison who attends each showing with a wide selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, which can be bought before the film starts, at the interval or at the end of the film session. It is hoped that next month, comments/observations will be given by members of the audience about the type of films which would provide interest, as well as any other needs which might add to the enjoyment of the experience. Stratford District Council, which secured funding to set up the Rural Cinema in the south of the County, are very anxious to receive feedback about the venture and the Village Hall committee will be hoping to provide some answers from those attending the next show. There are a number of ideas which have been put forward, including the one referred to in the information shown below, but all comments will be gratefully received.

! General Sectioni14- Bishops Bowl Lakes - Courier article of 11th January

Residents may have been alarmed by the article in the Courier entitled "Watersports plans are approved on former cement works site". The article gave the impression that dramatic new permissions were granted on December 17th, which in fact was the date when Stratford District Council's Executive considered the Masterplan. To reassure residents, NO planning applications were considered on December 17th. On the other hand, the Council did agree to adopt the revised Masterplan document as planning guidance for the site. The Masterplan does not in itself grant any permission for future development. What it does is to establish the framework - in respect of such matters as Ecology, Sustainability, Road Infrastructure, Local Economy and Leisure and Recreation - against which any future planning applications will have to be considered.

-:

j

The article also mentioned “permission” for industrial activities. In fact, the Masterplan goes to some pains to explain that unless the railhead is brought back into significant regular use there can be no industrial development on the site other than small-scale projects for the specific employment needs of the immediate local community. The current planning permissions mentioned in the Courier article come from the 'Planning History' section of the Masterplan, detailing extant permissions that date back over many years. The Courier article might give the impression that the landowners' plans had suddenly been given a green light. The truth is that any future development will have to satisfy all aspects of the Local Plan, which now includes this excellent, robust Masterplan statement of planning guidance for the site.

Harbury Senior Citizens Committee UpdateThank you to all of those who helped at the Christmas Party. There was a full house (or should I say Village Hall) and from the comments and feedback we have had, all of the work was rewarded because everyone enjoyed themselves. We would also like to say a special thank you to Graham Shurvington for providing the entertainment despite him having his mind on far more important things at the time. His dedication and efforts were really appreciated. Now, to the events planned for this year. The summer outing will be to Weston Super Mare on Wednesday 18th June, an old favourite that we haven’t been to for a while. Other dates to be added to your diaries are the Summer Lunch on Saturday 9th August and the 2008 Christmas Party on Saturday 13th December. Further details will be provided nearer the dates.

Village Christmas LightsWe have been pleased to receive a number of expressions of appreciation for the Christmas lights. We would like to thank The Dog Inn, Kath and Roger Ellis, The Gamecock, The Shakespeare, the Supermarket and the Library for allowing us to us to plug into their electricity, and the many householders who are happy to have the lights attached to their property. The Parish Council again found us some funding so that this year we complied with current electrical standards when Joe Griffin arranged for the equipment to be tested and made us a proper outdoor extension lead.

Southam LionsYou very kindly covered our ‘Southam Lions Christmas Santa Float’ story over the Post Christmas period, and we are now able to advise you that we raised an amazing £3700! We are so grateful to the hundreds of people who so kindly and so generously donated money to our two causes this year. We also handed out getting on for 2000 bars of chocolate to the children of Southam and District and some of them, still believing in the magic of Christmas, were aged well over what you would normally expect to be the toddler-teenage years -80 years and one smashing lady from Southam was 91 years young and still wanted a Christmas kiss from Santa... Ken, Bill and especially Terry can’t wait for next year!!On Wednesday 6th February at one of our regular meeting nights at Galanos House, Southam, representatives from Warwick Hospital Children’s Unit and Acorns Children’s Hospice will each be presented with a cheque for £2000.

n LETTERS TO THE EDITORS

Dear EditorsThrough the Harbury and Ladbroke News, I would like to express my thanks for everyone who donated money to the Arthritis Research Campaign in memory of my wife Audrey, £120.94 was raised.

Ralph Lawson

Dear EditorsHarbury resident Mrs. Audrey West enjoyed a surprise 80th Birthday Party last month. Relatives travelled from Suffolk, Oxfordshire and London to join her local friends and family in the Tom Hauley Room. Everyone kept the secret completely, which was quite a feat in such a friendly village.

To Audrey's astonishment, her elder daughter Linda and husband Nigel had flown from Canada especially to be there. Linda presented her with a handmade double quilt which incorporates the photographs of many family members printed onto cotton and worked into the design. The quilt is in the 'log cabin' style; it took about six months of daily hand-stitching and was signed on the reverse by everyone present. One of the photographs used is of the Knitwits, of which Audrey is a member. This had been printed in the Leamington Courier and had been sent to Linda by their photo department. We all had a great time, so thanks to everyone who came and made it such a memorable event, including Mike Hare whose music helped it go with a swing. The Jones family

Dear EditorsI would like to say a huge thank you to all friends and family who helped to make my 80th birthday celebrations (over 4 days) so successful. I am slowly sending out thank you letters.

Sincerely

Audrey West

37Dear EditorsIsobel and Helen Clarke would like to thank all their Harbury friends and family for all the Christmas gifts they received. They were all very much appreciated.

Special thanks to Steve and Maureen Darby for their hospitality on New Years Day.

Isobel and Helen Clarke

Dear EditorsI feel that dog fouling in Harbury must be mentioned again as it is getting worse. Why dogs are exercised in the village and allowed to foul the pavements one cannot understand. The mess can be cleared up by carrying bags when one is out. Why can’t owners pull dogs into the curb? No they do not and children especially are caked up.

I will certainly report anyone I see in future and advise people to do the same. Somebody must see them at times. I am a dog lover but not their owners.

Sincerely

Jeanne Beaumont

Dear EditorsMay I through the Harbury News remind the person who walks their dog round Sutcliffe Pastures that it is an offence to allow your dog to foul the pavement & liable to a fine of £100. I spent a good hour or so cleaning & scrubbing a section of pavement that looked like a "dog’s public loo". Imagine my horror when I woke the following morning to discover the culprit had deposited a pile on the pavement at the bottom of my drive. Oh yes, same dog!!

Come on dog owners. Wake up. Be responsible. They can't clear up after themselves and rely on us to do it. BAG IT and BIN IT

Don't leave it for others to do.

A Responsible Dog Owner
