LICENSE DESCRIPTIONAcupuncturists promote, maintain or restore health based on traditional oriental medical concepts of treating specific areas of the human body, known as acupuncture points or meridians, by performing practices such as: 1) inserting acupuncture needles; 2) moxibustion; or 3) applying manual, conductive thermal or electrical stimulation through the use of acupuncture needles. State law requires that a medical evaluator evaluate a patient's condition and make a written referral to the registered acupuncturist prior to treatment. The acupuncture treatment must then take place within 90 days of the initial referral for the evaluation to remain current.

Adoption investigators conduct background reports on birth parents, adoption pre-placement investigations, post-placement supervision and report to the court within the State of Iowa.

Advanced registered nurse practitioners practice advanced nursing in one of four specialized areas: 1) certified registered nurse anesthetists, 2) certified nurse midwives, 3) certified nurse practitioners, and 4) clinical nurse specialists. Any licensed registered nurse who would like to have prescriptive authority needs to apply for an ARNP license.

Architects plan and design residences, office buildings, factories, and various other structures according to the client's preferences; consult with the clients on style, specifications, materials, building time and cost limitations; ensure that building plans conform with local and state building codes, zoning laws, fire regulations and other ordinances; develop final design documentation for building contractors that includes structural plumbing, heating, and electrical requirements; assist the client in selecting a building contractor; and, visit the construction site to assure the design is being followed and designated materials are being used. They may specialize in certain types of structures or projects.

An asbestos abatement contractor/supervisor must have complete knowledge of the job duties performed by the abatement worker; be able to function as a working supervisor on the job site; read blueprints; keep job site records; ensure compliance with regulations (i.e., air-monitoring and air-sampling, abatement encapsulation techniques, and proper disposal of materials); and, complete necessary paperwork required by the Iowa Division of Labor Services, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He or she must ensure that only state-of-the-art work practices are used in the construction and maintenance of barriers and decontamination enclosure systems, positioning of warning signs, minimizing fiber release (i.e., use of wet methods, negative pressure ventilation equipment, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuums).

Asbestos abatement workers use hand-operated or power-operated tools to remove or encapsulate asbestos-containing materials; wear protective clothing and use a respirator to prevent exposure to airborne asbestos fibers; follow all safety regulations regarding work practices, such as work site preparation, decontamination, and waste disposal; and, use encapsulating materials in an appropriate manner. They need to understand the nature of asbestos-related diseases, routes of exposure, and synergism between cigarette smoking and asbestos exposure. Workers construct and maintain proper barriers and decontamination enclosure systems; position warning signs. They must follow proper working techniques for minimizing fiber release through the use of wet methods, negative pressure ventilation equipment, high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuums, and proper clean-up and disposal procedures.

Asbestos inspectors must be able to identify asbestos; know the locations and uses of asbestos in buildings; and recognize the physical appearance of asbestos. They must understand the health effects related to asbestos exposure, the synergistic effect between cigarette smoke and asbestos exposure, the latency period, legal liabilities and defenses, comprehensive general liability policies, and how claims are made. Inspectors work with an accredited asbestos management planner; conduct inspections; inventory asbestos-containing material (ACM), make physical assessment of its condition; understand the safe inspection of electrical, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) systems; read blueprints and as-built drawings; conduct bulk sampling; and, maintain records of both buildings and inspections.

Asbestos management planners evaluate and interpret survey results; review the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) and TITLE II requirements for asbestos inspectors and management planners in Subsection 203(8)(1); summarize field data and laboratory results; compare field inspector's data sheet, laboratory results and site survey; conduct hazard assessments; and explain potential significant damage to building owners. They evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of encapsulation, enclosure, maintenance or removal and select the best option; develop an operations and maintenance plan; keep and control records of inspectors` and contractors` reports, as well as the operations and maintenance program; perform economic analysis and cost estimates; develop cost estimates and reports for building owners; and, may apply for Asbestos School Hazard Abatement Act grants or loans.

Asbestos project designers plan and organize asbestos abatement projects; arrange for air sampling and waste removal; ensure that materials, workers, and procedures meet required standards; conduct aggressive air monitoring following abatement; and, prepare job site plans and estimates of present costs of abatement versus future operations and maintenance costs. They write abatement specifications, means, and methods of abatement in occupied buildings as well as safety system design specifications; and prepare drawings and on-site reports. They are skilled in contract writing and working with consultants; understand relevant federal, state, and local regulatory requirements which include Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA); TITLE II; OSHA Standards 1926.1101, 1910.1001, 1910.134; 40 C.F.R. Part 61 "National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants" Subpart A (General Provisions) and Subpart M (National Emission Standard for Asbestos); 40 C.F.R. Part 763, Subpart G (EPA "Worker Protection Rule").

Under the supervision of a physician or physician assistant, athletic trainers provide to athletes therapy designed for prevention, physical evaluation, emergency care and physical reconditioning relating to injuries and illnesses incurred through sports-induced trauma. The trauma occurs while preparing for or participating in a sports competition or during a physical training program, either of which is sponsored by an educational institution, amateur or professional athletic group or other recognized organization.

Audiologists provide services related to disorders of hearing and associated communication disorders by the measuring, testing, evaluating, identifying, preventing, ameliorating, modifying, or remediating hearing disorders. After diagnosis, the licensee may provide consultation, counseling and instruction for the non-medical rehabilitation of individuals and groups, including the determination and use of appropriate amplification. Speech and hearing are so closely related that a person must have some knowledge of both to be a success as an audiologist or speech pathologist.

A bail enforcement agent takes or attempts to take into custody the principal on a bail bond issued on a deposit filed in relation to a criminal proceeding to assure the presence of the defendant at trial. Bail enforcement agents are commonly known as bounty hunters who search for persons that have jumped their bail bond.

Barber instructors teach the responsibilities of barbering (cutting, chemically treating and styling hair, shaving, trimming beards and mustaches, etc.) to students. They ensure that barber students meet the minimum educational requirements and also teach the proper sanitation techniques for care of the equipment and individuals.

A barber provides customers with barbering services: shampooing, cutting, blow- waving, trimming, singeing, hair body processing, arranging, bleaching or coloring the hair, hair relaxing, drying, applying hair tonics and tapering hair, using clippers, combs, dryers, and scissors. Barbers apply hairdressings or lotions, lather and shave beards, or shape hair contour on temple and neck using razor. They dye, singe, shampoo, or style hair; massage or apply cosmetic preparations to the face, neck, or scalp; fit and sell hair replacements; sell lotions, tonics, or other cosmetic supplies; and, record charge on ticket.

Boiler inspectors perform technical work in the inspection of boilers and unfired pressure vessels to ensure compliance with state safety laws and regulations.

Bus drivers transport passengers over specified routes to local or distant points according to a time schedule; collect cash fares and make change, collect and issue tokens, tickets, and transfers; regulate heating, lighting and ventilating systems for passenger comfort; comply with local traffic regulations; report delays or accidents; record cash receipts and ticket fares; may load or unload baggage from baggage compartment or freight checked by passengers; may have to check tires, oil, water, and fuel and make minor repairs; answer questions about schedules, routes and transfer points; and, announce stops and other information concerning trips.

Certified nursing assistants provide personal care including feeding, bathing, and assisting patients with personal hygiene. They check patients' vital signs, make progress assessments, deliver meals, maintain a secure environment, and perform treatments and other tasks. The CNA works under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

Certified public accountants prepare, analyze and verify business records and financial reports; prepare profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cost studies and tax reports; and, may also develop, install and supervise accounting systems and operations. Using special computer software packages, they transform raw transaction data into a variety of specialized reports and tabulations. They work in one of four major fields of accounting: 1) public, 2) management or industry, 3) government, or 4) internal auditing. Certified public accountants who qualify on the basis of education and experience, can attest to the accuracy of financial data. Only CPAs can do audits and reviews.

Certified shorthand reporters maintain a complete record of judicial proceedings. This includes reporting by machine shorthand all spoken communication during the proceedings and maintenance of exhibits and witness lists. It requires the ability to provide a verbatim transcript of the proceedings, which is accomplished by typing, dictation, or the most modern method of using computer-aided transcription (CAT) wherein the original computer writing of the court reporter is translated into English by use of computers and dedicated software. This method requires advanced skills by the court reporter and provides instant written translation of spoken words for hearing-impaired citizens. Reporters may work as freelancers in pretrial discovery work, or as official reporters hired by the State and other entities. Due to the nature of the job, accuracy and speed are vital with emphasis on grammar, English, spelling, and various technical terminologies including legal and medical.

Chiropractors treat human ailments by adjusting the neuromusculoskeletal structures, primarily by hand or instrument, through spinal care. They may withdraw or order the withdrawal of a patient's blood for diagnostic purposes; perform or utilize routine laboratory tests; perform physical examinations; render nutritional advice; and, perform or utilize chiropractic physiotherapy procedures. They may chose to specialize in orthopedics, diagnostic, radiology, neurology, nutrition, sports medicine, sports injuries, or industrial injuries.

A coaching authorization or a coaching endorsement allows the practitioner to coach in grades K-12 for Iowa public and private school athletic programs

License for the manufacture, importation, distribution, sale, and commercial or industrial use of explosives. Does not include fireworks nor ammunition for small arms primers.

A cosmetologist shampoos, cuts, colors, singes, bleaches, curls, styles, chemically curls and straightens hair for men, women and children. They may work on wigs and hairpieces, use cosmetics on customers, massage customers' scalps, do manicures and pedicures, apply artificial nails, or do nail tips and extensions. Duties may include massaging, cleansing, stimulating, exercising, beautifying, or similar techniques upon the face, neck, arms, hands, or upper part of the body with the hands or mechanical or electrical apparatus or appliances with other preparations. Cosmetologists might also sell hair care products or other beauty related items, answer the telephone, take appointments, schedule walk-in customers, operate cash register, and stock supplies. A cosmetology instructor works only in a licensed cosmetology school, instructing students in the skills required of any of the cosmetology practices.

Registration to practice as a dental assistant in Iowa, including performing any tasks under the supervision of a licensed dentist that involves intraoral services on patients or extraoral duties including infection control or use of hazardous materials, or dental radiography.

Dental hygienists provide direct patient care under the supervision of a dentist. Patient care includes removal of deposits and stains from patients' teeth, exposing and developing dental x-ray films, performing various preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic and educational services.

Dentists examine teeth and tissues of the mouth to diagnose and treat diseases or abnormalities. They take x-rays, place protective plastic shields on children's' teeth, fill cavities, straighten teeth, repair fractured teeth, treat gum disease, extract teeth when necessary, may provide artificial dentures, perform corrective surgery of the gums and supporting bones, clean teeth and provide other preventive services.

Dietitians evaluate the nutritional needs of individuals and groups, then advise and assist them on appropriate diets based upon principles from the sciences of nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, food management, and behavioral or social sciences. They confer with physicians and other health professionals to coordinate medical and nutritional needs. They must ensure that nutritional needs are consistent with available resources and constraints; establish goals and priorities; provide counseling in health and disease; and evaluate and change recommendations to continually provide the best standards of food quality and nutrition. A dietitian may work in a hospital, clinic, public health program, extended care facility, university, business, government agency, or private practice. The major areas of practice are clinical, community, management, and consultant dietetics. Dietitians in nursing homes or small hospitals may also manage the food service department.

Doctors of medicine perform medical examinations, diagnose illnesses, and treat people who are suffering from injury or disease. They examine patients utilizing diagnostic aids such as: stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, thermometer, and other instruments; elicit and record information about patient's medical history; order or execute various tests, analyses and x-rays to provide information on patient's condition; analyze reports and findings of tests and examination, and diagnose condition; administer or prescribe treatments and medications; promote health by advising patients concerning diet, hygiene, and methods for prevention of disease; perform surgical procedures commensurate with surgical competency; and, may practice any of the known medical and surgical specialties. Individuals who qualify for medical licensure in Iowa may practice medicine and surgery, call themselves "Doctor," and use the letters "MD" or "DO" after their name.

Doctors of osteopathic medicine diagnose, prescribe for, and treat diseases of the human body, relying upon accepted medical and surgical procedures. They examine patients to determine symptoms attributable to impairments in musculoskeletal system; correct disorders and affections of bones, muscles, nerves, and other body systems by medicinal and surgical procedures and, manipulative therapy when deemed beneficial; and, employ x-rays, drugs, and other aids to diagnose and treat bodily impairments. They may practice any of the known medical and surgical specialties.

Administrators plan and set goals for a school or entire school district; set academic philosophy for the school; visit classrooms, review educational objectives, evaluate teachers, and examine learning materials. They also prepare budgets and administrative reports; confer with teachers, other administrative staff, parents, and community leaders.

An electrologist removes excess hair by electric needle or electronic processes.

Elevator inspectors check the safety conditions of elevators, escalators, and lifts.

Electricians perform wiring or installation, alteration, and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment, either inside or outside buildings. This may include knowledge to properly plan, lay out and supervise the installation of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes.

The emergency medical services-instructor (EMS-I) course is designed to assist experienced emergency medical service providers in providing the highest quality instruction to their students. The course emphasizes adult learning, curriculum and lesson plan development, performance testing, and state policies and procedures. Paid positions are available in the state of Iowa for this occupation.

An emergency medical technician-basic (EMT-B) examines and assesses the patient, recognizes signs and symptoms regarding illness or injury, and uses proper procedures to render basic emergency medical care. Paid positions are available in the state of Iowa.

An emergency medical technician-intermediate (EMT-I) has received additional training in patient assessment, intravenous therapy, use of esophageal airways (an advanced technique for maintaining an open airway), and automated defibrillation. Paid positions are available in the state of Iowa.

An emergency medical technician - paramedic (EMT-P) has received training in all of the advanced emergency medical care skills including cardiac evaluation and treatment, medication effects and treatment, and advanced airway management techniques. The Paramedic Specialist, having greater knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology, is the highest EMT certification obtainable. Paid positions are available in the state of Iowa.

The emergency rescue technician (ERT) course is designed to train first responders, EMT-Bs, EMT-Is, and paramedics in various rescue techniques. The topics covered in the course include: rescue from heights and depths, extrication from automobiles, agricultural rescue, rescue from water, and other special hazards.

Engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to the economical solution of practical technical problems. They design industrial machinery; develop scientific equipment; supervise the construction of buildings and highways; design consumer products and various other innovations; and, evaluate the overall effectiveness of new products and operations, as well as the cost and reliability. Responsibilities may include inspection, quality control, management and administration. Engineers typically specialize in one of more than 25 specialties recognized by professional societies.

Estheticians can beautify, massage, cleanse or stimulate a persons skin (except the scalp) by use of cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, tonics, lotions or creams or any device, electrical or otherwise, for the care of the skin. They also might apply make-up or eyelashes to a person, tint the eyelashes or eyebrows, lighten hair on the body (except the scalp), or remove excess hair from the body using depilatories, waxes, or tweezers and eyebrow threading.

A farm bulk milk hauler/grader samples, grades, and measures the milk in a farm bulk tank to check for off-odors and off-flavors and determines the amount to be picked up. They pump the milk from the tank and deliver it to a dairy plant, receiving station or transfer station.

Layouts, installs, repairs, tests or maintains fire protection systems. This includes sprinkler, standpipe, hose, special hazard, dry, foam, or any water-based fire protection systems, whether engineered or pre-engineered and whether manual or automatically activated, used for fire protection purposes which may include an integrated system of underground and overhead piping and which may be connected to a water source. This licensing does not apply to portable fire extinguishers.

A first responder uses stabilizing techniques on patients prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

Funeral directors gather personal information, complete required documents, remove remains from the place of death, help conduct funeral services, direct the final disposition of the deceased, and provide for the needs of the survivors during the period of and immediately after the funeral. They may also be involved in the selling of caskets, urns, vaults, markers or other burial receptacles. They prepare bodies of the deceased by embalming or preserving, completing restorative work, applying cosmetics, dressing, and arranging bodies in casket in preparation for burial. Occasionally, they complete the paperwork for and supervise disinterment. Funeral directors also handle the paper work involved with the person's death. They may help family members apply for veterans' burial benefits, notify the Social Security Administration of the death, apply on behalf of survivors for the transfer of any pensions, insurance policies, or annuities, and submit papers to state authorities so that a formal certificate of death may be issued and copies distributed to heirs.

A certified health service provider in psychology is deemed qualified to diagnose or evaluate mental illness and nervous disorders and to treat mental illnesses and disorders, excluding those mental illnesses and nervous disorders which are established as primarily of biological etiology -- with the exception of the treatment of the psychological and behavioral aspects of those mental illnesses and nervous disorders.

Hearing aid dealers fit and sell hearing amplification systems to individuals; test auditory system of hearing-impaired individuals, using test equipment and apply standardized evaluation procedures; receive individuals referred by physicians for fitting and purchasing of hearing amplification systems; make ear mold impressions as part of the fitting; and, interpret and evaluate auditory test results and confer with hearing-impaired individuals to demonstrate, select, fit, adapt and modify hearing amplification systems.

Industrial radiographers inspect nonagricultural raw materials or processed, machined, fabricated, or assembled parts or products for defects, wear, and deviations from specifications. They perform or personally supervise industrial radiographic operations. Industrial radiography means a non-destructive testing method using ionizing radiation, such as gamma rays or x-rays, to make radiographic images for the purpose of detecting flaws in objects without destroying them. May use precision measuring instruments and complex test equipment. The radiographer is also responsible for ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Iowa Rules and all license or registration conditions.

Insurance producers assist individuals or companies in selecting insurance coverage to meet their needs; compile lists of prospective clients to provide leads for additional business; contact prospects and explain features and merits of policies offered; calculate and quote premium rates for policies; and, call on policyholders to deliver and explain policies and to suggest additions and/or changes. Depending upon the arrangement with an insurance company, they may collect premiums from policyholders to remit to the company and maintain a record of payments. Producers usually sell one or more of the three basic types of insurance: life, property/casualty, or health. An increasing number of insurance producers are also licensed to sell mutual funds, annuities, and other securities.

Interpreters translate spoken words into sign language for a deaf or hard-of-hearing person and translate sign language for a deaf or hard-of-hearing person into spoken or written words for someone who does not understand sign language. An interpreter may work for a deaf person, a hard-of-hearing and/or hearing person, an entity that provides services for deaf or hard-of-hearing people, or an entity that is obligated to provide communication access under state or federal law. (Possibilities include hospitals, school systems, television stations, or candidates for elective office, etc.)The Deaf Services Commission of Iowa (DSCI) has a current list of interpreters that are available to provide services in Iowa.

An investment advisor representative is employed by or associated with an investment adviser (company) and makes recommendations or otherwise renders advice regarding securities. They solicit offers, negotiate for the sale of or sell investment advisory services and may also supervise employees who perform any of these functions.

Land surveyors plan, organize, and direct the work of one or more survey parties engaged in measuring distances, directions, and angles between points and elevations of points, lines, and contours on the earth's surface. They plan the fieldwork to determine the precise location of natural and constructed features of the survey project area; research legal records to look for evidence of previous boundaries; develop new data from photogrammetric records; determine methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control; keep accurate notes, records, and sketches to describe and certify work performed; and, coordinate findings with work of engineering and architectural personnel, clients, and others concerned with the project.

Lawyers conduct criminal and civil lawsuits, draft legal documents, advise clients as to legal rights, and practice other phases of law. They gather evidence in divorce, civil criminal, and other cases to formulate defense or to initiate legal action; represent clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of government; may act as trustee, guardian, conservator, or executor; may teach college courses in law; and, may specialize in a particular phase of law.

Lead abatement contractors conduct lead abatement and supervise the work of others. "Lead abatement" means any measure or set of measures designed to permanently eliminate lead-based paint hazards in a residential dwelling or child-occupied facility. Abatement includes, but is not limited to the removal of lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust, all preparation, cleanup, disposal, and post-abatement clearance testing activities associated with such measures.

Persons employed in this profession prepare abatement project designs, occupant protection plans and abatement reports. (see also Lead Abatement Contractor)

A lead abatement worker conducts lead abatement under the supervision of a lead abatement contractor. "Lead abatement" means any measure or set of measures designed to permanently eliminate lead-based paint hazards in a residential dwelling or child-occupied facility. Abatement includes, but is not limited to the removal of lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust, all preparation, cleanup, disposal, and post-abatement clearance testing activities associated with such measures. Furthermore, abatement does not include interim controls, operations and maintenance activities, or other measures and activities designed to temporarily, but not permanently, reduce lead-based paint hazards.

Lead inspectors conduct lead inspections, risk assessments, lead hazard screens and visual risk assessments. "Lead inspection" means a surface-by-surface investigation to determine the presence of lead-based paint and a determination of the existence, nature, severity and location of lead-based paint hazards in a residential dwelling or child-occupied facility. Inspectors provide a written report explaining the results of the investigation and options for reducing lead-based paint hazards to the person requesting the lead inspection. "Risk assessment" means an investigation to determine the existence, nature, severity, and location of lead-based paint hazards in a residential dwelling or child-occupied facility. Inspectors provide a written report explaining the results of the investigation and options for reducing lead-based paint hazards to the person requesting the lead inspection. "Lead hazard screen" means a limited risk assessment activity that involves limited paint and dust sampling.

Licensed practical nurses work as direct caregivers in a variety of settings including acute and long-term care under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. They are members of the health care team working primarily with individuals and families. Nursing skills are based upon knowledge of natural, biological and social sciences, nursing theory and practice.

Licensed public accountants (LPAs) prepare, analyze, and verify business records and financial reports; prepare profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cost studies, and tax reports; and may develop, install, and supervise accounting systems and operations. Using special computer software packages, they transform raw transaction data into a variety of specialized reports and tabulations. LPAs work in one of four major fields of accounting - public, management, government, or internal auditing. Licensed public accountants are not able to do audits, nor can they make a statement as to the accuracy of financial data.

Manicurists cleanse, shape and polish the fingernails and massage the hands and lower arms of any person. It does not include the application of nail extensions, artificial nails or pedicures (See Nail Technologist).

Confinement manure applicators apply liquid or dry manure stored at a confinement feeding operation to the land, unless they are a small animal feeding operation. A small animal feeding operation is a site with less than 500 animal units. No fees are charged for the manure or the application of manure.

A commercial manure service representative (formerly Commercial Manure Applicator) works for a commercial manure service that charges a fee for and is in the business of transporting, storing, handling, or applying manure on the land of another person. Certified commercial manure representatives evaluate field conditions and the nutrient content of manure from different storage systems; evaluates crop nutrient needs to determine if proposed application rates are appropriate; reads and interprets manure management plans; and, calibrates and operates equipment to prevent over-application of manure that might create runoff leading to surface or groundwater contamination.

Marital and family therapists apply counseling techniques in the assessment and resolution of emotional conditions. This includes the alteration and establishment of attitudes and patterns of interaction relative to marriage, family life, and interpersonal relationships. They collect and analyze information about clients to determine advisability of counseling or referral to other specialists or institutions; review notes and information collected to identify problems and concerns; and, evaluate the results of counseling methods to determine reliability and validity of the treatment used. Therapists interact with other professionals to discuss therapy or treatment, new resources or techniques and to share information.

A massage therapist performs massage, myotherapy, massotherapy, body work, body work therapy, or therapeutic massage including hydrotherapy, superficial hot and cold applications, vibration and topical applications, or other therapy which involves manipulation of the muscle and connective tissue of the body, excluding osseous tissue, to treat the muscle tonus system for the purpose of enhancing health, providing muscle relaxation, increasing range of motion, reducing stress, relieving pain, or improving circulation.

Mental health counselors provide counseling services involving assessment, referral, consultation, and the application of counseling, human development principles, learning theory, group dynamics, and the etiology of maladjustment and dysfunctional behavior to individuals, families, and groups. They help individuals deal with addictions and substance abuse, family, parenting, and marital problems, suicide, stress management, problems with self-esteem, problems associated with aging, and other issues of mental and emotional health. Mental health counselors work closely with other mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses and school counselors.

Nail technologists apply sculptured nails, nail extensions, wraps, overlays, nail art or any other nail technique to the fingernails and toenails of a person. Also, they manicure people's nails, remove excess hair (by use of depilatories, wax or tweezers), and massage the hands, arms, ankles, and feet.

A nuclear medicine technologist performs nuclear medicine procedures while under the supervision of a physician who is authorized by an Iowa license to possess and use radioactive materials. Procedures might include 1) administration of any radiopharmaceutical to human beings for diagnostic purposes, 2) administration of radioactive material to human beings for therapeutic purposes, 3) use of radioactive material for diagnostic purposes involving transmission or excitation, or 4) quality control and assurance. This involves administering the drugs, operating the cameras (which detect and map the radioactive drug in the patient's body) and insuring good quality films.

Persons in this profession organize and lead recreation programs to promote the psychosocial well being of residents, assuring the highest level of participation by residents/clients in health care facilities. These are usually individual or group activities that may include exercise, games and crafts, social outings, musical entertainment, and visits by church groups and other organizations.

A nursing home administrator manages, supervises and is in general administrative charge of a licensed nursing facility. This person must be able to plan, implement, and evaluate: (A) Resident Care Management, including nursing and medical services, medical records, pharmaceutical services, rehabilitation, social services, food service, therapeutic recreational programs, and quality assurance; (B) Personnel Management, including management-staff communication, staff recruitment and retention, personnel policies, and health and safety programs; (C) Financial Management, including budgeting, monitoring financial performance, and reporting systems; (D) Environmental Management, including maintaining buildings, grounds and equipment, and fire, disaster and emergency programs; (E) Regulatory Compliance, including laws and regulations, and governing entities' directives; and, (F) Organizational Management.

Occupational therapists plan and direct educational, vocational, and recreational activities to help mentally, physically, or emotionally disabled patients become self-sufficient, maintain health, and prevent disability; evaluate the capacities and skills of patients; set goals and plan therapy programs; assist patients in performing activities of all kinds, ranging from using a computer to caring for daily needs, such as dressing, cooking, and eating. For those with permanent functional disabilities, therapists provide such adaptive equipment as wheelchairs, splints, and aids for eating and dressing. They also design or make special equipment needed at home or at work. An important part of an occupational therapist's job is recording a patient's activities and progress. These records are essential for evaluating patients, billing, and reporting to physicians.

An occupational therapist assistant helps licensed occupational therapists in providing rehabilitative services to patients suffering from mental, physical, emotional, or developmental impairments. They use the rehabilitative activities and exercises that are outlined in the treatment plan devised by the occupational therapist. They also record their observations with regard to the patient's progress for use by the occupational therapist.

Optometrists measure the visual power of the human eye; prescribe and adapt lenses, prisms and contact lenses; and, employ visual training or ocular exercise to aid, relieve or correct people's vision. They treat diseases of the eye by using topical pharmaceutical agents or oral medicines and by removing superficial foreign bodies from the human eye and adnexa.

Commercial pesticide applicators evaluate pest problems, real or potential, and select the most appropriate control measures, including integrated pest management and pesticides for the safe and effective control of pests. They ensure that the necessary pesticides, application equipment and other supplies are available for proper application of pesticides. They must understand the crops and/or sites treated with pesticides, as well as know the types of pests encountered and their effect on the crop or site in order to determine the severity of the problem and how to treat it.

Commercial pesticide applicators evaluate pest problems, real or potential, and select the most appropriate control measures, including integrated pest management and pesticides for the safe and effective control of pests. Private pesticide applicators apply "Restricted Use Pesticides" as the PRODUCER of an agricultural commodity, on lands owned or otherwise under the direct control of the individual. Individuals who apply pesticides for hire should refer to requirements for Pesticide Applicator, Commercial.

Pharmacists compound and dispense medications pursuant to prescriptions issued by physicians, dentists, or other authorized health professionals (MD, DO, DDS, DVM, DPM, OD, PA or ARNP). They weigh, measure, and mix drugs and other medicinal compounds, and fill bottles or capsules with the correct quantity and composition of preparation; dispense non-prescription medication to public; counsel patients and answer patients' questions regarding prescription medication; use refrigeration and other methods to store and preserve biological and other drugs, vaccines, and serums subject to deterioration; order and maintain supplies of drugs, chemicals, and other pharmaceutical stock; maintain up-to-date patient medication profiles; advise physicians on the proper selection and use of medicines and potential drug interactions or counteractions; and, perform prospective and retrospective drug utilization review.

Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists provide medication and other healthcare products to patients. Technicians usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication for patients, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. Technicians refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist.

Physical therapists plan, implement, and evaluate physical therapy programs using the effective properties of physical agents including (but not limited to) mechanical devices, heat, cold, air, light, water, electricity, sound, therapeutic exercise and rehabilitative procedures. These devices are used to prevent, correct, minimize or alleviate a physical impairment. They review patients' medical records, evaluate patients, identify specific patient problems and perform tests and evaluations which provide information about: joint motion, strength and endurance of muscles, functional ability, status of muscle tone and reflexes, appearance and stability of walking, need for and use of braces and artificial limbs, function of the heart and lungs, integrity of sensation and perception, and the performance of activities required in daily living. They consult and work closely with physicians, patients, families, support staff and other health practitioners in establishing treatment objectives that are realistic and consistent with patients' needs.

A physical therapist assistant (PTA) works under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist to implement treatment programs according to the plan of care. They train patients in exercises and activities of daily living, conducting treatments, using special equipment, administering modalities and other treatment procedures and reporting to the physical therapist on the patient's responses.

Take x-rays of the foot and ankle for diagnostic purposes to assist a doctor of podiatry.

Physician assistants provide medical services as delegated by an approved supervising physician, take medical histories, perform physical exams on patients of all ages, assess, diagnose and treat medical or surgical problems as delegated by a supervising physician, perform therapeutic procedures and office surgical procedures. A physician assistant may perform any medical task that is: 1) delegated by a supervising physician, 2) within the qualifications of the PA, and 3) not prohibited by the law or the Board. Physician assistant services may be utilized in any clinical setting, in nursing homes, patient homes, or extended care facilities.

Plumbers and Mechanical Systems Professionals assemble, install, alter, and repair of plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration or hydronic systems. May also include the designing of such systems and familiarity with the governing laws and rules.

Podiatrists diagnose and treat diseases and deformities of the foot and ankle. They perform surgery, fit corrective devices, and prescribe drugs, physical therapy, and proper shoes. A variety of foot conditions are treated including: corns, bunions, bone spurs, calluses, ingrown toenails, skin and nail diseases, deformed toes, sprains and fractures. A licensed podiatric physician may administer local anesthesia. Conscious sedation may be administered in a hospital or an ambulatory surgical center.

Private investigators conduct private investigations for the purposes of: obtaining information on habits, conduct, movements, whereabouts, associations, transactions, reputations or character of individuals; examining the credibility of witnesses or other persons; obtaining information leading to the recovery of lost or stolen property; determining the cause of or responsibility for fires, accidents or injuries to property; and, locating missing persons. They write reports about investigations or findings for clients, report criminal information to police and testify in court. They may also administer lie detector tests by use of a polygraph machine (Polygraph Examiner licenses are now included within Private Investigator licenses.)

A private security agent (security guard) provides patrol or guard services for residences, industrial property or business property.

A professional boxer is a person who participates in a boxing contest held in the United States between individuals for compensation or a prize, and does not include any amateur boxing match.

Professional landscape architects plan the best use of land areas for parks and other recreational facilities, airports, golf courses, highways, factories, shopping malls, housing developments, and other projects. They use trees and shrubs and design walkways and lighting to create a pleasant environment; confer with clients, engineers and architects to achieve overall project; prepare site plans, working drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for land development; supervise all aspects of the project--including the grading of the land, surface and subsoil damage, erosion control, planting, and reforestation; and, inspect construction work in progress to ensure compliance with landscape specifications.

A psychologist applies established principles of learning, motivation, perception, thinking, and emotional relations to problems of behavior adjustment, group relations, and behavior modification. The application of principles includes, but is not limited to: counseling and the use of psychological remedial measures with individuals or groups with adjustment or emotional problems in the areas of work, family, school, or personal relationships; measuring and testing personality, intelligence, aptitudes, public opinion, attitudes, and skills; teaching of such subject matter; and, conducting research on the problems relating to human behavior.

All persons participating in any capacity in a race meeting or with an excursion gambling boat are required to obtain and maintain a license from the Commission. A list of various positions that exist can be found under "Fees." Individual job descriptions can be obtained by contacting the racing or gaming facility of interest. Generally, these positions fall into one of three categories: 1) operational jobs, including food service, bartenders, janitorial workers (non-gaming) and others; 2) those who are directly involved with gaming or who handle monies, such as cage cashiers, mutuel tellers, slot workers, change sellers, etc.; or, 3) key positions such as management, directors, auditors, surveillance experts, etc. The administrator may require other related employees to obtain occupational licenses.

Under the supervision of a radiation oncologist, radiation therapists perform simulation radiography for localizing treatment fields or apply radiation from x-ray machines, particle accelerators, or radioactive materials to humans for therapeutic purposes.

General Diagnostic Radiographer: Applies x-rays to any part of a person's body, including special procedures, to diagnose injury or disease. This includes positioning the patient, processing the film and manipulating the x-ray equipment. Limited Diagnostic Radiographer: Applies x-rays to not more than three body parts, usually chest and extremities and/or spine, to diagnose injury or disease. This includes positioning the patient, processing the film and manipulating the x-ray equipment.

Workers in this profession perform radon or radon decay measurements in buildings, and provide professional advice on radon and radon decay measurements, radon entry routes, and health risk assessments. (Radon decay products are a result of the radon decay chain and are also radioactive.)

Persons in this profession evaluate radon or radon decay products test results to ensure validity of test; conduct and evaluate diagnostic tests necessary to design effective radon mitigation systems; and, design and install (or supervise the installation of) radon mitigation systems to reduce radon levels to below 4.0 pC/L.

Real estate appraisers provide an unbiased estimate of the quality, value, and best use of a specific property; gather information on properties by taking measurements, interviewing persons familiar with the property, and searching public records of sales, leases, assessments, and other transactions; and, include findings in a formal written report.

Real estate brokers represent individuals who want to sell or buy property. They assist in price negotiations between buyers and sellers; may engage in property management services, determine market values, and assist in marketing new construction projects; may arrange meetings between buyers and sellers; and, assist in obtaining loans to finance purchases and do title searches. They manage their own office, are responsible to supervise all licensees assigned to them, and may specialize in commercial, farm, and industrial, or residential real estate.

Real estate salespersons are licensed to be employed by or otherwise associated with a supervising broker to rent, buy or sell property for others for a fee, usually on a commission basis. They review and study property listings and interview prospective clients to solicit and sell listings; stay current with market conditions and property values; show property sites and are responsible to provide accurate information to prospects concerning price, features, property condition and terms of sale or lease; write real estate contracts, including purchase agreements and rental and lease agreements; and, may write other documents such as deeds and mortgages.

Registered nurses practice nursing skills in hospitals and clinics, schools, clients' homes, workplaces, long-term care facilities, and many non-traditional settings. They practice independently, in conjunction with other nurses, with physicians, and as health team members. Nursing care is provided to acutely and chronically ill patients and their families, and involves health education and health promotion for clients of all ages. Registered nurses may supervise other personnel including licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants.

Under qualified medical direction, respiratory care practitioners practice the therapy, management, rehabilitation, diagnostic evaluation, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities affecting the cardiopulmonary (heart-lung) system. They may work with newborns, critical care, emergency procedures, and geriatrics. Practitioners may administer pharmacological, diagnostic, and therapeutic agents; observe and monitor patient responses and report changes which may implement changes in protocol or treatment; analyze blood gasses, respiratory secretions and pulmonary function testing; measure and monitor cardiac function as it relates to respiratory care; administer mechanical or environmental control mechanisms; and, provide the maintenance of artificial and natural airways.

Sampling technicians conduct "visual risk assessments" to determine the presence of deteriorated paint or other potential sources of lead-based paint hazards in a residential dwelling or child-occupied facility. They may also conduct clearance testing after interim controls, paint stabilization, or standards treatments pursuant to HUD regulations. Technicians provide a written report explaining the results of the assessment to the person requesting the assessment.

Sanitary landfill operators control processes and equipment to dispose by burial municipal, non-hazardous industrial and construction/demolition wastes in permitted sanitary landfills. They maintain and operate compactors, bulldozers, earth movers, cranes, scales and other equipment necessary for the proper functioning of a sanitary landfill; maintain landfill operation records including, but not limited to, ground water quality monitoring results, leachate control system sample results, tonnages accepted, tonnages diverted to alternate solid waste processes, fees paid and quantities disposed via Special Waste Authorization; collect samples from ground water quality and leachate control system monitoring, inspect incoming loads periodically and randomly, reject improperly transported or otherwise prohibited loads and wastes; and, supervise subordinate persons in all of the above functions.

School psychologists work with students, parents, teachers and administrators to resolve behavioral and learning problems of students in elementary and secondary schools. They assess a student's mental aptitude, emotional development, potential for gifted/talented classification, or possible interference of substance abuse. They evaluate the effectiveness of academic programs and work to improve management procedures and teaching strategies.

Securities agents buy and sell stocks and bonds for individuals and organizations. As representatives of a brokerage firm, they perform these transactions by applying knowledge of securities, market conditions, government regulations, and financial status of customers; provide customers with information and advice regarding investments based on interpretation of data from securities reports, financial periodicals, and the stock-quotation-viewer screen; record and transmit buy and sell orders to trading division in accordance with customer's wishes; calculate and record cost of transaction for billing purposes, using quotations received during transmittal of order; develop portfolio of selected investments for customer; and, compile a list of prospective customers. They may also be called registered representatives, account executives, or brokers.

Layouts, installs, repairs, alters, adds or maintains alarm systems. Duties may include mounting alarm system raceways, boxes or system devices and pulling of system cables. Alarm systems refer to fire alarm, security alarm, medical alarm systems or supervisory signal-initiating devices, as well as the installation of any home automation systems, and the initiation of a response to these signals.

Social workers enhance or restore people's capacity for social functioning. They utilize analytic and intervention skills to apply psychosocial theory methods to individuals, couples, families, groups, and communities. They deal with individuals and/or groups of people concerned with bringing about changes in their lives; try to secure the appropriate resources, services, education, information, job training or method to meet the client's needs; and, help individuals understand themselves and how to work within the existing system. Clinical social workers also diagnose and treat individuals and families for emotional disabilities. They plan and conduct programs for children, teenagers, adults, older persons, and groups with similar situations. Social workers, with input from their clients, record goals and plans of action for their clients and then maintain detailed reports of their clients' progress. The title social worker includes: case worker, probation and parole officer, community worker, and correctional treatment specialist.

Solid waste incinerator operators control processes and equipment to destroy by incineration municipal, infectious/pathogenic, and certain construction/demolition wastes in permitted solid waste incinerators. They maintain and operate the incinerator and related ancillary equipment necessary for the proper functioning of the disposal system; maintain operation records including, but not limited to, tonnages accepted, tonnages diverted to alternate solid waste processes, and quantities of ash disposed via Special Waste Authorization; collect samples from the combustion process and read and interpret data from the various meters and gauges which monitor the equipment's operation; periodically and randomly inspect loads of incoming wastes; and, supervise subordinate persons in all of the above functions.

Speech pathologists apply principles, methods, and procedures for the measurement, testing, evaluation, prediction, consultation, counseling, instruction, habilitation, rehabilitation, or remediation related to the development and disorders of speech, fluency, voice, or language. They nonmedically evaluate, prevent, ameliorate, modify, or remediate such disorders and conditions in individuals or groups of individuals. Speech and hearing are so closely related that a person must have some knowledge of both to be a success as a speech pathologist or an audiologist.

A tattoo artist examines a patron's skin surface to be tattooed for any evidence of skin infection; prepares the area to be tattooed by applying an antiseptic approved by the Department of Public Health; using sterile cotton or gauze; applies a sterile dressing to the tattooed area after the tattooing is complete; provides the patron with printed instructions regarding tattoo care during the healing process, and instructs the patron to consult a physician if signs and symptoms of an infection develop. He or she must also verify that individual requesting a tattoo is not a minor.

Taxicab drivers drive cabs to transport passengers for a fee. They pick up passengers in response to radio- or telephone-relayed requests for service; collect fees recorded on taxi meter based on mileage or time factor and record transaction on a log; report by radio or telephone to dispatcher upon completion of a trip; and, perform such services as handling passenger luggage or picking up and delivering packages.

Performs all duties as required by Iowa teachers including demonstrating the following skills and dispositions: planning and delivering instruction, specific content specializations, student learning, diverse learners, classroom management, communication, assessment, reflective practices, collaboration, ethical conduct, and integrative technology.

Tractor-trailer truck drivers drive gasoline or diesel-powered tractor-trailers, usually long distances, to transport and deliver products; drive trucks to a destination, applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations and skill in maneuvering vehicle in difficult situations; inspect truck for defects before and after trips and submit report indicating truck condition; maintain driver log according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) regulations; and, may assist workers in loading and unloading truck. They must also perform routine maintenance. Anyone driving tractor-trailers, single unit trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating over 26,000 pounds, or anyone carrying a placardable quantity of hazardous materials must apply for licensure.

Veterinarians diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of animals, determine the nature of disease or injury and treat animals surgically or medically. They inoculate animals against disease and test cattle for tuberculosis and brucellosis; conduct necropsies to determine cause of death; inspect animals, both before and after slaughter, that are intended for human food; advise individuals on the care and breeding of animals; engage in general practice, treating various animal species or specialize, restricting practice to dogs, cats, and other pets, or to single species such as cattle, horses, or poultry.

Veterinary technicians work under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian for any purpose except diagnosis, prescription, or surgery.

WATER TREATMENT OPERATOR I, II, III, IV WASTEWATER LAGOON OPERATOR I, II WASTEWATER TREATMENT OPERATOR I, II, III, IV WATER DISTRIBUTION OPERATOR I, II, III Control processes and equipment to remove solid materials, chemicals, and organisms from the water or to render them harmless; maintain and operate pumps, pipes, valves, and processing equipment of the treatment facility to move the water or sewage through the various treatment processes; read and interpret meters and gauges to make sure plant equipment and processes are working properly and adjust controls as needed; take samples of the water or sewage and perform chemical and biological laboratory analyses; and, make minor repairs to valves, pumps, and other equipment.




Well contractors construct or reconstruct wells; install, repair or maintain pumps, or plug wells. They set up and operate well drilling rigs to drill wells; assemble tools, extend stabilizing jackscrews to support rigs, bolt trusses to derricks and machine frames, and move levers and pedals to control machines that drill or punch well bore; and, lower casings into wells.

REQUIREMENT FEESApplicants must hold current active status as a diplomate in the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the English language to understand and be understood by patients, Board, and Committee members, and successfully complete a course in clean needle technique approved by the NCCAOM. Applicants must also successfully complete a three-year postsecondary training program or acupuncture college program accredited by, in candidacy for accreditation by, or which meets the standards of the National Accreditation Commission for Schools and Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Licensed Iowa MDs, DOs, podiatrists, chiropractors, and dentists are not required to be licensed to practice acupuncture. A total of 30 approved Professional Development Activity (PDA) points are required biennially to qualify for license renewal.

Applicants must be licensed as a registered nurse (see Registered Nurse, RN) in Iowa or be recognized for licensure in Iowa by the nurse licensure compact, complete a 12 to 18-month program leading to certification in a specialty area or a 24-month master's degree program, and pass a written national certification examination. Exam dates, fees, and the length of program vary depending on the area of specialization. The RN license is issued for three years, expiring on the 15th day of the birth month of the licensee. Registration as an ARNP is scheduled to coincide with the three-year RN licensure cycle. To sit for the exam, an applicant is required to apply to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards in Washington, DC for a council record. Qualifications for the record include having a professional degree from an accredited school of architecture and completing the Intern Development Program. The Intern Development Program requires verification of at least three years of training under a registered architect. To apply for registration by reciprocity, an applicant must have a National Council of Architecture Registration Board's certificate and must meet the requirements in effect in Iowa on the original date of registration in another state. Iowa has required a professional degree in architecture since July 1, 1984 and has required completion of the Intern Development Program since July 1, 1991. Twenty-four contact hours of continuing education are required biennially for license renewal. An applicant must have a master's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college with a major in Speech Pathology; not less than 300 hours of supervised clinical training by an accredited college or university; and, not less than nine months of full-time supervised clinical experience (within one year) completed after master's degree (within one year) with a temporary license or a certificate of clinical competence issued by American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). A temporary permit is available, but the licensee must be supervised by an Iowa-licensed audiologist. Applicants possessing a current Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from ASHA may apply any time. Out-of-state applicants must apply and receive a license before practicing in Iowa. A person wishing to become a licensed, independent bail enforcement agent must: 1) be at least 18 years of age and a citizen of the United States, 2) be of good moral character, have no convictions for an aggravated misdemeanor or a felony, and have never been convicted of assault resulting from domestic abuse, 3) not be an abuser of alcohol or controlled substance, nor have a history of mental illness, instability or a history of repeated acts of violence, 4) submit pictures, fingerprints and license fee(s) along with a completed application to the Commissioner of Public Safety, 5) pass a written examination, 6) be able to show proof of financial responsibility and must be approved for a $5,000 surety bond; this will be $10,000 if applying for more than one license under this Chapter. For those wishing to work as an employee for an agency, only the first four requirements above apply. Licensed agencies must also submit an employee I.D. card application along with the items in number four.

Applicant must be a licensed barber for two consecutive years, graduate of an accredited high school or equivalent, complete a board-approved, 16-hour teaching course, and successfully pass the Iowa instructor examination. Barber instructors must have a current barber license which requires eight hours of continuing education. However, no additional continuing education is required for renewal of the instructors license.

In Iowa, the applicant must be at least 16 years of age, have a tenth grade education, graduate from a board-approved barber school, and pass a national written and practical exam. A person who completes the requirements for licensure except for examination shall be known as a trainee and shall be issued a temporary permit to allow the applicant to practice barbering until passage of the examinations. The temporary permit of an applicant who does not pass the second examination shall be revoked. All other out-of-state applicants must meet Iowa's license requirements and have a valid license for at least 12 months in the preceding two years prior to applying. There are no particular education requirements to obtain licensure. Drivers must now meet minimum medical requirements, be certified medically fit every two years, and successfully pass the written, driving, and vision exams. Applicants over age 70 are eligible for a two-year license only. Persons renewing an Iowa chauffeur's license will have to comply with federal regulations of CDL. Individual companies may have "years of experience" or other criteria. All persons driving buses that carry 16 or more passengers must apply for a license. School bus drivers must meet eligibility standards as established by the Iowa Department of Education. There are no continuing education requirements for license renewal.

Though not licensed in Iowa, an individual wishing to become a CNA must either enroll themselves or be sponsored by their employer to take the 75-hour course and competency tests provided by a testing site (usually the community colleges). After they have completed the course and passed both the skills and written competency tests, their name is automatically placed on the Iowa Nurse Aide Registry and they are issued a 6-digit ID number. Thirty of the 75 course hours are clinical. Nurse aides working in certified skilled nursing facilities and nursing facilities are required to be on a nurse aide registry. If a nurse aide does not work at that occupation for two years, the aide will have to retake both competency tests to get their status updated on the Registry and to be eligible to work in Iowa. The total educational program must include an accounting concentration or equivalent as determined by rule to be appropriate. A person certified in another state may be certified in Iowa without further testing if the applicant meets all of the requirements for certification in Iowa. An applicant must have graduated from an Iowa-approved chiropractic college having status with the Council of Chiropractic Education (CCE), pass Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, and Physiotherapy of the National Board exam, and pass the Iowa Board of Chiropractic Examiners written exam. There are no board requirements for certification as a dental assistant. However, registration is required. Registration requires education and an examination in infection control and jurisprudence. Education can be taken through formal program or on-the-job using board study mnanual after obtaining trainee status from the board office. Exams can be either Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Infection Control (ICE), or Certified Dental Assistant (CDA). All registered dental assistants must show proof of current CPR. Twenty hours of continuing education every two years is required, including two hours on infection control. Proof of current CPR certification must also be shown for renewal and up to three continuing education hours can be claimed for CPR certification in a biennial period. Dependent adult/child abuse reporting training is required every five years. Dental assistants qualified in dental radiography must also complete two hours of continuing education in radiography.

Licensure as an esthetician requires taking 600 hours of training, consisting of at least 150 hours of core life sciences, 115 hours of esthetics theory, and 335 hours of applied practical instruction from an approved school. An applicant must successfully pass the required exams and pay the application fee. A licensed cosmetologist may obtain a license in esthetics by taking 600 hours in esthetics through a board approved school and pass the required examination. 150 hours of the cosmetology core curriculum may transfer to this practice discipline. Estheticians from other states are reviewed on an individual basis. Eight hours of continuing education are required biennially, of which four hours shall be in the prescribed practice discipline for license renewal. Two hours must be in Iowa law.

A first responder applicant must be at least 17 years of age, proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English, and must have successfully completed a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The 60 semester hours shall not include any technical or vocational mortuary science courses. A one-year internship must be served under the supervision of a board-certified preceptor. The applicant must submit a completed application, the appropriate fee, an official transcript of grades showing completion of training in a college of mortuary science approved by the Iowa State Board of Mortuary Science Examiners, and National Board scores. Students enrolled in an accredited mortuary science school may apply for student practicum, which allows the student to work under supervision of a licensed funeral director who has a valid preceptor certificate. An applicant must have at least two years of clinical experience in a recognized health service setting or meet the standards of the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Two years of clinical experience means two years of supervised experience in health service in psychology, of which at least one year is in an organized health service training program as defined in 240.6(2) and one year is postdoctoral. There are no continuing education requirements.

Requirements for initial licensure: applicants must apply for a temporary permit before starting the required 12-month supervised training period under a licensed hearing aid dispenser. After training, the applicant shall complete the board approved application for Hearing Aid Dispensers, pay the application fee and pass the International Hearing Society Examination within one year after temporary license is issued, if applicable. Applicant must also take and pass an Iowa law exam. A temporary permit is available by completing appropriate section of the Hearing Aid Dispensers application form. All others (i.e., out-of-state applicants) wishing to provide hearing aid services in Iowa must obtain a license before service begins. Applicants holding valid certificates or licenses in a state or jurisdiction that has requirements that are equivalent to or higher may be issued an Iowa license. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and pass one or more of the appropriate examinations listed below. Non-residents can obtain an Iowa license but must first be licensed in their home state. All insurance producers must meet a continuing education requirement of 36 hours per category every three years, to be completed December 31, just prior to their license expiration date.

Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) is required for employment at the Deaf Services Commission of Iowa and the commission promotes it as a credential of competence showing ability to function as an interpreter. DSCI requires an application be submitted to be listed with the agency to provide interpreting services. Interpreters who hold certification from RID or from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) are also required to submit verification of their certification status. The above entities promote certification to cover the interpreter's legal liability and ability to function in settings that require it. An interpreter must have certification from RID to provide services 1) at the time of arrest of a deaf person, or 2) during any legal proceeding, according to the Iowa Code Chapters above. Interpreters certified by RID and NAD are required to earn nine continuing education units or 90 hours of continuing education during a three-year period in order to maintain certification.

There are no fees to be on the DSCI list of interpreters. RID, Inc. and NAD, Inc. charge fees for their tests.

While there are no specific educational requirements, there are examination and/or professional designation requirements. There are no continuing education requirements for license renewal.

An applicant for licensure in land surveying must have graduated from a post-secondary course of two years or more in mathematics, physical sciences, mapping and surveying, or engineering. After successfully passing an eight-hour examination on fundamental surveying subjects, the applicant can be certified as a land surveyor intern. Those who complete four years of acceptable experience as a land surveyor intern are qualified to take the eight-hour Principles and Practice of Land Surveying examination. Licensure as a land surveyor will be granted to those who pass the second examination. An applicant for admission to practice law in Iowa must submit proof of graduation from a reputable law school fully accredited by the American Bar Association. Attorneys may be admitted without examination provided they have practiced law at least five of the last seven years in another state and have met other requirements for admission. In such cases, there is an admission fee. An annual assessment of $25 to $100 is imposed upon all practicing lawyers to maintain Iowa's "client security" fund. Law students should file a Law Student Registration by November 1 of the year in which the person begins law school. Lawyers are required to take fifteen hours of continuing legal education each year, including two hours of legal ethics for each two-year period.

To be approved for the training of lead abatement contractors, a course must be at least 40 instructional training hours with a minimum of 12 hours devoted to hands-on activities covering a wide range of subjects. An applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent; graduate from an approved school of nursing at the practical nurse level; and, pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN). Practical nurse programs are the equivalent of one year and include both classroom study and clinical practice. Foreign applicants seeking initial LPN licensure in Iowa must be reviewed by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) Credential Evaluation Service prior to taking the NCLEX-PN exam. CGFNS provides primary source verification of educational preparation and licensure in the native country. Applicants must earn a minimum score of 500 (paper) or 173 (computer) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). To become certified an applicator must either pass a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) administered 50-question exam or take training every year for three consecutive years. The fourth year of training to start the three-year cycle over must be competed by March 1 of the fourth year. Family farm members may be exempt from certification fees if all the requirements are met. Applicant must take training every year for three consecutive years and the fourth year of training must be completed by March 1, which will begin the three-year cycle over.

Formal education or supervised practice is not required to become certified as a commercial manure service representative. An applicant must hold a 45-hour master's degree or doctoral degree in Marital and Family Therapy or its equivalent from an accredited college or university, have two years of supervised clinical experience, and obtain a passing score set by the national exam service on the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy. An applicant who has obtained American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy clinical membership is considered to have met the education and clinical experience requirements. Provisions for licensure by interstate endorsement have been made if another state's requirements are equivalent to Iowa's. Since April 2, 1998, licensure to practice the profession of Marital and Family Therapy has been mandatory. Qualified members of other professions may provide services of a marital and family therapy nature consistent with the accepted standards of their respective professions, but these persons shall not use a title or description denoting that they are licensed marital and family therapists without first securing licensure. An applicant must successfully complete a curriculum of massage education approved by the department at an approved school, including at least 500 hours of instructor-supervised in-classroom instruction. The school curriculum must include 100 hours of anatomy and physiology, basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and 400 hours of other subjects relating directly to development of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to render competent professional massage therapy to the public. An applicant is not required to have any particular number of years of education, but must be at least 16 years of age, attend a workshop lasting 60 hours, and pass a written exam given at the end of the workshop. There are no continuing education requirements unless the person is a nationally certified activity coordinator.

Limited Permit: An applicant who has completed the educational and the experience requirements and is waiting to take the certification examination can apply for a limited permit to practice. Study materials are available from the Iowa State University Extension Service. There is no additional fee once basic fee is paid. Additional training is necessary for those using restricted-use fumigants. An individual may choose to renew a private applicator certification by attending two hours of continuing instruction approved by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) for each of the three years certified OR completing the written exam at the end of the three years for renewal.

An applicant for a license to practice pharmacy must be a graduate of an accredited college or school of pharmacy with a minimum of bachelor of science in Pharmacy. One thousand hours of internship credit is awarded upon graduation from an accredited college of pharmacy. Applicants for Iowa license by examination must complete an additional 500 hours internship in hospital or community practice. Credit may be granted for experience obtained non-concurrent with school. A maximum of 250 hours of the required 500 hours may be granted for preapproved non-traditional experience. Intern registration is required prior to employment as an intern. No credit will be granted prior to registration. A license may be issued to anyone who has been licensed in another state if they are able to meet Iowa's licensing requirements. Pharmacy technicians must apply to the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners for registration within 90 days of accepting employment. There are no state or federal requirements for formal training or certification of pharmacy technicians. Most pharmacy technicians receive informal on-the-job training. The professional curriculum must be equivalent to the Commission of Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education standards. The applicant must achieve a score of at least 560 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper exam and 200 on the computer exam administered by the Educational Testing Services, Inc. Physical therapists licensed in other states may apply for license in Iowa through Interstate Endorsement. Forty hours of continuing education are required biennially for license renewal.

A person wishing to become a licensed, independent private investigator must be at least 18 years of age and a citizen of the United States and be of good moral character, have no convictions for an aggravated misdemeanor or a felony, and have never been convicted of assault resulting from domestic abuse and not be an abuser of alcohol or controlled substance, nor have a history of mental illness, instability or a history of repeated acts of violence. They must submit pictures, fingerprints and license fee(s) along with a completed application to the Commissioner of Public Safety and pass a written examination and be able to show proof of financial responsibility and must be approved for a $5,000 surety bond; this will be $10,000 if applying for more than one license under this Chapter. An applicant for the Certified Residential or Certified General Real Property Appraiser shall comply with the appropriate education requirement and pass a uniform national examination. A Certified Residential applicant shall complete 120 hours of classroom education and the Certified General shall complete 180 hours of classroom education. Applicants are also required to have 2,500 and 3,000 hours, respectively, of appraisal experience within a minimum of two years and two and one-half respectively, for certification. A non-resident temporary certification is offered to individuals in good standing in their home state for two appraisal assignments per year. To serve as a school psychologist, an applicant must: 1) complete an approved program of graduate study in preparation for service as a school psychologist through one of the following options: a.) a master's degree with sufficient graduate semester hours beyond a baccalaureate degree to total sixty, or, b.) a specialist's degree of at least sixty graduate semester hours with or without completion of a terminal master's degree, or, c.) a sixty-semester hour master's degree program that must include a practicum in a school setting designed to give the student an opportunity to develop an understanding of the role of psychology in the classroom through participation in classroom procedures in a supportive role. 2) complete an approved human relations component, and, 3) ensure that the program must include preparation that contributes to the education of the handicapped and the gifted and talented. Master Social Work: Must possess a master's degree in Social Work and pass the intermediate level of the ASWB exam. Independent Social Work: must possess a master's degree in Social Work, practice social work for two years as a full-time employee or complete 4,000 hours employment under the supervision of a licensed, independent social worker after receiving a master's or doctoral degree in Social Work and passing the clinical level of the ASWB exam. A license may be upgraded if the applicant obtains additional education or experience. Twenty-seven hours of continuing education are required biennially for license renewal including three hours in social work ethics.

An applicant for a tattoo artist permit must be 18 years of age and submit proof of attaining the age of 18 years. Applicants must also submit proof of having a high school diploma or general educational development certificate. A bloodborne pathogens and standard first aid course must be completed through the American Red Cross or an equivalent nationally recognized entity prior to obtaining a permit. Applicants must submit proof of successful completion of the certification programs. An applicant cannot own, control or lease, act as an agent for, conduct, manage, or operate an establishment to practice the art of tattooing or engage in the practice of tattooing without first applying for and receiving a permit from the Department of Public Health.

A chauffeur's license, Class D endorsement 3, is required from the state. In addition, most large cities require a taxicab driver to obtain a special operator's license issued by the local city government. City licenses are generally renewable each calendar year if the operator has a good driving record and has not been involved in any criminal activity. Applicants over the age of 70 are eligible for a two-year license only. Licenses are renewed by passing an eye examination and paying the renewal fee. There are no requirements for continuing education for taxi driver license renewal.

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is necessary to drive a truck or truck-tractor semi trailer in Iowa and the applicant for this license must be at least 18 years of age. The U.S. Department of Transportation establishes minimum medical qualifications for truck drivers who are engaged in interstate commerce. An interstate driver must be at least 21 years old and meet minimum medical requirements. They must pass a physical examination every two years. In addition, drivers must take a written examination on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Individual companies may have "years of experience" or other criteria. Most jobs require the applicant to pass a federal DOT physical every two years. Applicants over the age of 70 are eligible for a two-year license only. There are no continuing education requirements for license renewal.

Well contractors are required to have two years of experience providing well services. In addition to a certification from the Department of Natural Resources, water well diggers are required to register as a contractor (see Appendix). Provisional well contractors must sign a statement that: 1.There is a shortage of certified well contractors in the area where they intend to operate; 2. That they have one year of experience in well services performed under the direct supervision of a certified well contractor, and; 3. The applicant has successfully completed the examination. A certified well contractor who employs the applicant must also sign the statement. Sixteen contact hours or 1.6 continuing education units are required for certification renewal.
