Research overviewA defining feature of a serious university is its ability to generate knowledge, and to ensure that new insights are applied to the problems of Society and passed down to future generations. Unsurprisingly, therefore, XJTLU places great emphasis on research and it affects essentially everything we do.

We recognise the importance of fundamental studies to generate important basic knowledge and to spur new ways of thinking. Equally, we carry out applied research, not least because it underpins long-term economic growth and social well-being.

Regardless of the type of study being conducted, we appreciate the importance of training the next generation of research leaders – for example, we have an unusually thorough career development programme for our postgraduates.

Our international faculty have trained in globally distinguished universities and research institutes, and collectively bring an enormous range of expertise and innovative thinking to XJTLU. To ensure that the university makes effective use of its talented faculty, it has set up a number of interdisciplinary research centres and institutes, focusing on topics ranging from Chemical Biology to Design, and Multiscale Modelling.

The resulting cross-fertilisation of ideas and skills promises to make the university an unusually interesting and intellectually exciting place to conduct original research. XJTLU’s researchers are supported with excellent infrastructure – for example, the university’s laboratory facilities are equipped to a very high standard and have excellent technical staff.

In short, XJTLU is well positioned to address important research questions, including some of the key grand challenges of the 21st Century.

RESEARCH

PhD studyThe XJTLU Doctoral Programme is a strategic research collaboration between Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) and the University of Liverpool (UoL), and is based at XJTLU. Students on this programme are formally registered with UoL as UoL off-site Postgraduate Research students.

Each PhD student is appointed a designated primary (local) supervisor at XJTLU who is a full-time member of academic staff at XJTLU. In addition, the students also have a designated secondary supervisor based at the University of Liverpool. PhD students will carry out research on XJTLU premises under the supervision of the supervisory team. After completing their required studies, meeting the institutional requirements, students will be granted doctoral degree certificates by the University of Liverpool.

For more information, please visit our PhD webpages: www.xjtlu.edu.cn/en/admissions/ postgraduate/phd-degree

Our core research areasXJTLU is well positioned as the bridge between east and west for research collaboration, serving both as a portal for research talents entering China and a showcase for local research potential to the world at large.

We have a number of cutting-edge research themes, including:

n Energy futures: social and technological choicesn Human-computer interaction: design, social networks, telecommunicationn Finance, risk and hazard managementn Sustainable urbanisationn Health technologies n Emerging economiesn Diagnostic markers, therapeutic targets, and drug discoveryn Languages, communication and culturen nanotechnology and new materials

My main interest as Dean for Research & Graduate Studies is to develop an academic environment where internationally excellent research of all types can flourish. XJTLU, for example, has ultramodern laboratory facilities that rival those anywhere else in the world. Our advanced study programmes underpin our research and are focused on subjects that central to long-term economic growth and social well-being.

WHY CHINA?

“ ”

Three good reasons for studying in Chinan Studying in China not only develops skills and

understanding of the world’s fastest developing country at first hand, but provides social networks for your later career.

n Studying in China brings you into direct contact witha major world of ideas and values, that is not only different to the European experience, but encourages further questioning of how we understand our own lives and development, as well as China’s.

n Studying in China is fun, from the opportunity to experience the country’s rich diversity of peoples, food, customs, and landscapes.

The Language Centre provides Chinese language modules for you to develop both your Chinese language skills and a deeper understanding of China and its unique culture. It aims to enable you to communicate and acquire the skills for cross-cultural interaction, using specifically tailored materials, teaching methodology and support, including where possible a language buddy.

XJTLU recruits highly experienced and innovative Chinese language teachers. The staff at XJTLU are dedicated to applying both task-based methods and the communicative approach in their teaching.

Chinese teaching at XJTLU emphasises active student participation and individual initiative, differing from the traditional Chinese teaching approach which is often more passive.

These classes are provided free of charge to all of our international postgraduate students.

Excel at Chinese

Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University is in Suzhou, the heart of China’s present and future growth.

China’s economic growth has been spectacular during the last three decades. Given China’s impact on the rest of the world to date, at such a higher level of economic development there are likely to be almost universal social, political and economic results.

Award-winning Chinese teaching staffSijia Zhou from the XJTLU Chinese Language Teaching Team was awarded the 1st prize in an international course planning competition organised by “Experiencing Chinese”.

The competition received widespread attention and more than 80 Chinese language teachers from 12 countries participated in the competition.

Sijia’s work was praised highly for both its innovation and practicality. Her work was said to combine appropriate content with smooth steps, reasonable time allocation and proper integration of visual aids.

In particular, Sijia’s work is task-based, involving a considerable amount of teacher-student and student-student interaction as well as integrating awareness of Chinese culture into language teaching.

2,500 years of historySuzhou has a rich history of over 2,500 years. The city’s old village canals, stone bridges, pagodas, and meticulously designed UNESCO World Heritage gardens draw in millions of domestic and overseas tourists each year. Since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), it has also been an important centre for China’s silk industry. Suzhou’s culture is famous across China, with Marco Polo once described Suzhou as the “Venice of the East”. Suzhou’s historic Pingjiang Road offers tourist shops, quirky coffee shops and art galleries. Other popular cultural attractions include the Suzhou Museum designed by world famous architect I M Pei.

ReligionThere are a number of places of worship within the city, including those for leading Christian denominations, as well as Buddhism, Islam and Taoism.

SUzHOU

Suzhou is a fantastic city, located just 25 minutes from Shanghai (see page 60 for maps).

An Economic powerhouseIn 2011, Suzhou became the fourth largest economy in China, with a GDP of over RMB 1 trillion (approx. USD 160 billion). XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), 80km from Shanghai and connected by high speed rail and road links. SIP offers a lower cost of living compared to neighbouring Shanghai.

SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. This has created great opportunities for XJTLU’s students to engage in placements and find employment after graduation.

Explore China & beyondSuzhou is well connected to other parts of China and the rest of the world and is a great place to explore all of East Asia. Other Chinese cities can be reached via the high speed intercity railway network. International and national links are provided by Shanghai’s two major international airports. The high speed intercity railway connects Suzhou to China’s other major cities and means that Shanghai can be reached in just 25 minutes.

Great recreation & nightlifeSome of Suzhou’s main entertainment hubs are located around the scenic Jinji Lake, near the university. The Science and Culture Centre houses a theatre and IMAX cinema, one of a number of cinemas around the city. Suzhou also has many sports centres and international hotels. For nightlife, there are a whole host of restaurants, bars and clubs, with Ligongdi area one of the most popular locations for international students.

Shopping to suit every tasteSuzhou has an extensive variety of places to shop. There are many international supermarket chains, including, as well as smaller international food stores, local markets and convenience stores. In addition to the shops and malls located in the old district, there are many shopping malls in SIP such as Times Square and InCity mall, selling Chinese and international designer brands.

“ ”The past, present and future of this country

are an enormous source of inspiration. I come from Italy, a country with a long

history and I am always attracted by places in which modernity is combined with

tradition. This is what I like about China and Suzhou is the city which probably best

reflects this.

Our internal thoughts and emotions result in changes in our external environments, while our external environments affect our internal thoughts and emotions.

This cycle of design and learning manifests itself in the architectures around us, and the insights and ideas within and amongst us. Studies at the Department of Architecture will introduce you into this architectural process, its creative demands, its practice, its history, its critique, its technology and its challenges. Prominent amongst these challenges are the social dimensions of architecture, which are most demanding where we design for others than ourselves, where few design for many, where designed environments are shared, and where resources are limited.

With a view to achieving more desirable futures with more liveable environments, the Department of Architecture has the ambition to educate a new generation of architectural designers and thinkers: An innovative, critical and technically competent generation who will address pressing issues of our present and future including rapid urbanisation and urban transformation, migration, energy consumption and emissions of building construction and building use, and the distribution of infrastructure and resources.

Department of Architecture

MArch DesignWith China as an architecture and urban laboratory the Department of Architecture’s two-year MArch (Des) Masters programme establishes architectural education at the graduate level, with a risk embracing, forward looking agenda.

Beyond code, structure, form and technical ability Architects rely on critical ability to analyze, adapt and create new environments for habitation and action. Beyond trivialities, opinions, orthodoxies and the known path architects should provide new opportunities to re-invent an activity that is in dire need of critical self-reflection and adaptation to new circumstances. As always the danger for new architects is to get stuck in the era where they graduated, with no abilities to critically incorporate the new or overcome the baggage of the past. In this situation China is unique in the models applied, with lack of exact correspondence with precedents of the past but also a hopeful outlook for the future, uninhibited by moralizing constraints, opened towards a horizon that appears light and dark at the same time.

With the position that action without critical reflection the architect can only indulge in disjoint form making, the March(Des) focuses on architectural studio design as well as on humanistic and technical modules in preparation of either professional practice or PhD-level studies. Graduates of this programme will receive a Masters degree certificate from the University of Liverpool.

The MArch (Des) programme takes advantage of XJTLU’s unique position in a country in which the dynamics of rapid urbanisation are exciting, and help to articulate the questions with which architects all over the world are confronted. It takes its local context as a driver for developing architectural design, leading beyond the edge of current global debates in Architecture.

The members of faculty have a diverse and deep expertise in all areas of architecture, and are able to combine their backgrounds from 18 different countries.

XJTLU is seeking international validation at ARB/RIBA part II level from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for the benefit of the first graduating cohort, as well as professional accreditation from the Ministry of Construction in China.
