Preface

This volume contains the lectures and short talks given at the XIX International School on Nuclear PhysicsNeutron Physics and Applications The School was held from 19ndash25 September 2011 in lsquoClub HotelBolerorsquo located in the lsquoGolden Sandsrsquo (Zlatni Pyasaci) Resort Complex on the Black Sea coast near VarnaBulgaria The School was organized by the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy of theBulgarian Academy of Sciences The co-organizer of the School was the Bulgarian Nuclear RegulatoryAgency and the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Researchndash Dubna

According to long-standing tradition the School has been held every second year since 1973 TheSchoolrsquos program has been restructured according to our enlarged new international links and todayit is more similar to an international conference than to a classical nuclear physics school This newimage attracts many young scientists and students from around the world This year ndash 2011 we hadthe pleasure of welcoming more than 50 distinguished scientists as lecturers Additionally 14 youngcolleagues received the opportunity to each present a short contribution The program ranged from recentachievements in areas such as nuclear structure and reactions to the hot topics of the application of nuclearmethods reactor physics and nuclear safety The 94 participants enjoyed the scientific presentations anddiscussions as well as the relaxing atmosphere at the beach and during the pleasant evenings

The main topics were as follows

bull Nuclear excitations at various energiesbull Nuclei at high angular moments and temperaturebull Structure and reactions far from stabilitybull Symmetries and collective phenomenabull Methods for lifetime measurementsbull Astrophysical aspects of nuclear structurebull Neutron nuclear physicsbull Nuclear databull Advanced methods in nuclear waste treatmentbull Nuclear methods for applications

Several colleagues helped with the organization of the School We would like to give our thanks tothem especially to the Scientific Secretary of the School Dr Elena Stefanova and to Dr Dimitar Tarpanovand the members of the Organizing Committee for their cordiality and high level assistance
